In depth: Mort is a caring, gentle soul. Despite his appearance, he is in no way at all tough or mean. He has a big heart, loves deeply and passionately. He will often put others before himself, if it does not clash with his values. As a vampire, he feels all this emotions even more intensely. Even though it has been a while since he has been turned, he still struggles with what he is. He knows he has to hurt others in order to survive, and it takes a lot of energy to put himself and his prey through that. He tries to be optimistic about it, and often tries to pay others with gold or favours in exchange for their blood.

Don’t push him too far though. It takes a very long time to eventually get on his nerves, but once you’re on his bad side, there is no way back. Especially when it comes to protecting the ones he loves and cares for, he is very unforgiving. So thread carefully. Enough is enough, and you don’t want to anger a vampire.

[0 - 2]
As the firstborn son of Damian and Ellinor Rietveldt, Mortimer had no reason to complain. His life was pretty normal and fulfilling. The farm they were living on, was the perfect playground for the young child. He loved to be around his parents and the farm animals. His caring nature showed already on this early age, as he took care of a few kittens that had lost their mother, feeding them with a bottle. When he was two, his love and affection, but also his loyalty, shifted towards his baby brother. Little Kaspian was as a gift sent from heaven to him. Even though he could entertain himself for a while on the farm, the city they lived in was small and nothing interesting ever happened. With the new addition to the family, he would have a playmate soon enough to fill in the quiet hours.

[2 - 6]
Wherever Kaz went, Mort followed. Even though he was the older brother, he was quite happy with having Kaz decide whatever they were going to do that day. It was clear that the other had a more lively fantasy, and was more creative when it came to inventing new games. He happily went along with everything his brother came up with. Because he spent all his time with him, he was the first to notice a change in his brother’s behaviour. He could feel some kind of negative energy around Kaz, and saw how it devoured him more and more. His parents spoke of him as ‘troubled’ and ‘dangerous’, but Kaz had never in any way hurt him. So he paid no mind to whatever warning his parents gave him, and kept on spending his days with him. Whenever he could, he tried to cheer the other up and helped him to keep the demons at bay.

But they both were just kids. And at one point, they couldn’t bear the weight of the situation anymore. The brothers overheard their parents speaking of sending Kaspian away. This was the final push. While he had always been able to calm his brother down enough to stay in control, that day was the day he lost it. And he lost it bad. He didn’t react to anything he was saying anymore, and soon enough the streets were crawling with creatures Mort had never seen before. So he ran away, to the only safe place he could think of. The beach, where they had spent so many days playing together.

After a while, Kaz found his way to the beach as well. He was obviously wounded, and as much in shock as he was. A great evil had taken possession of his brother, but deep down he was still good people. So he embraced his brother, who was crying uncontrollably. Desperately he tried to make him calm down, feel better, but it was to no avail. Mort had closed his eyes, and noticed too late how the tide had slowly set in. The two boys were taken by the waves and dragged into the open sea. But he refused to let go. He would sacrifice his life if that meant Kaspian would live. And that’s what he thought he had done when he could feel his heartbeat going down, finally giving in to the cold grasp of death.

[6 - 16]
If it hadn’t been for the ship that had passed by his body, he would have actually died. But the healer on board saved his life. He had barely made it, and his recovery was slow. Aside from the physical trauma, there was also the mental trauma that had swallowed the young boy whole. The captain took him to a strange harbour, in a land outside Fallen Skies. Overwhelmed by everything that had happened, he didn’t really speak much anymore. That’s why he never objected when the captain eventually sold him to a vampire by the name of Edmund Lennox.

The vampire had been looking for blood dolls, and even though he deemed Mortimer too young, he had bought him because he needed the distraction. Edmund basically raised Mort as his own, and slowly but surely the boy adapted to his new environment. The vampire taught him to read, write and do maths. Aside from that, he also found an interest in science, chemistry in particular. The challenges along the way only pushed the boy more, and he eventually grew out to be a young curious scientist himself.

[16 - 21]
But eventually, he had to serve his purpose. Edmund had bought him for one goal, and even though he loved Mort as his own son, he still had to feed. So he did. The vampire switched between blood dolls often enough for them to never really get too weak. But even with this method, they all got addicted to the venom at once point. Demanding more and more, while their bodies couldn’t keep up with the pace anymore. Eventually, Mortimer had to choose: die or turn into a vampire himself.

[21 - 25]
Mort made a decision he would regret numerous times in the upcoming years. More than is countable, he wished he had chosen death over becoming undead. Especially when his cravings for blood were so intens he unintentionally hurt whoever he was feeding from. He hated himself to his core. Even the guidance of his sire was not enough. It limited the damage a lot, but still innocent people died because he couldn’t control himself. Finally, after four long years, he felt like himself again.

Now he was immortal, he got all the time in the world. He also finished his duties to Edmund. This allowed him to return to Fallen Skies. Mort visited his old village, only to find it burned down to the ground. There was no sign of anyone he knew. But he knew his brother was out there, somewhere. He had to be.

And this is how the search begins.
