Can't you feel them breathing down your neck?
One chair was taken, the others were empty. The Commander of War had called the other Guardians to meet up, but none of them had arrived early. As per usual. With the amount of time they had to live, none of them seemed in the biggest rush until you told them to be. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath in.

On the table, sitting, was Styx. She could feel his presence and knew she would see him again once she opened her eyes, even if he was invisible to everyone else. He was there. He was real. If only he wasn’t, her life would have been so much calmer. Because there he sat, with that awful grin on his face. ‘It’s happening, Commander,’ he hissed, ‘the war is coming!’ He sounded so… awfully pleased. As if the people sacrificed in the war didn’t matter. She could handle Styx, though. His whispers were annoying, but… It was Cratos who really got into her head. Just like right now, while he was telling her to stand up and slash the throats of everyone who would oppose them.

Deep breath in, deep breath out… Because of the whispers, she totally missed the footsteps of the first Commander that entered the room.

Natura nihil frustra facit

Walking through those halls was something that Diana did countless times throughout the centuries. Nevertheless, she couldn't get used to the fact that the Mother wasn't going to be in the room with her Commanders. She knew that. She wasn't supposed to find it weird as much as she actually did. But there she was, walking towards the room where all the Guardians were supposed to meet. Same room, same furniture, same table, same seats. But every time Diana entered that room, a new feeling seemed to hit her right in the stomach and every time, she couldn't name that new sensation.

Her feet were heavy and were getting heavier with every step she took. Eventually though, she ended up finding herself behind the door. Before pushing it open, the Commander took a deep breath and shook her head trying to push away her gloomy thoughts, knowing that she had to focus on whatever the meeting was about. Hopefully nothing too serious, nor violent in any way, but since Minerva was the one that called them, she didn't have much hope in that sense.

Finally finding the strength and the mental stability she needed to face the situation, she entered the room. Minerva was the only one sitting at the table and with a quick look, Diana noticed that something was wrong. ”Are you okay, Min?” The girl quickly and lightly asked while walking further towards the table and finally taking her seat in front of the other Commander.

Carefully the Healer wrapped a clean bandage around the right wrist of one of the villagers. The atmosphere in the room was relaxed, which caused a gentle smile on the face of the young man. ”Thank you for your service, Child”, Apollo said when he was done. He watched how the other nodded and left the room again. The wounds were perfectly healed, but to make sure the puncture wounds would fade properly, he applied a bandage with some home-made cream he made from flowers Diana grew in her garden.

Speaking of, he really needed to get going now. Infinite time and he would be too late on the meeting. Heh. Apollo grabbed his lyre and started plucking the strings absent-minded while he walked over to the meeting hall. It calmed his mind, brought him into focus for what was to come. When he entered, he saw Diana and Minerva were already present. The Healer sat down next to Diana, without saying much, but he had a warm smile around his lips as a meaning of greeting.

We drink the poison our minds pour for us
and wonder why we feel so sick.

As if there was nothing to hurry about, the woman sat on a rock, admiring the beautiful view in front of her. She knew of the meeting that Minerva had called upon and that it was about to happen. Even though she knew Minerva must be waiting on her right now, the woman did not seem to be in a hurry. She did not need her Seithr abilities at all, to know what the meeting would be about. War. It was always about war if Minerva called the guardians together. She sighed, but couldn't help to laugh a little as well. She would eat the very rock she was sitting on, the very day Minerva decided to go on and talk about peace. That would never happen, however, she was sure of that. Eventually she decided to leave the rock she was sitting on behind and proceed to walk towards the little village that had been her home for centuries and will probably be her home for even more centuries.

Her footsteps echoed through the hallway she had walked countless of times before. Centuries long, this had been the exact spot they hosted their official meetings. Always. She walked into the room, to see that Minerva, Diana and Apollo were already in there. It was almost as if they had planned it like this. First Minerva, then Diana, then Apollo and then her; which meant Mercury would be last. The exact same order in which they were blessed by the Mother.  She nodded a hello towards Diana and Apollo, before her gaze fell on Minerva. "Are they whispering again?" Her personal demons. She was glad she had no demons like Minerva, only her own stupid head playing tricks on her. She took her place at the table next to Minerva, after which her gaze fell on the door. Now they just had to wait on Mercury, but she had a feeling he was going to take his time. Just like she did, as well.

Can't you feel them breathing down your neck?
‘Are you okay, Min?’ was the first question that was asked. ‘Are they whispering again?’ It was like they never got tired of asking the same thing. “They never stop,” she answered. Though she did appreciate the thought, it was of little use. Her demons had started to whisper into her ears as a child. They never stopped. Only when Ceres had been there, had they closed their eyes and taken their moment of peace. Even Mercury could not calm them down, only put a glass wall between them and her. They were always there. Something that had broken her over and over again over the centuries, but she was still here. And so were they.

Mercury isn’t here,” she noted calmly. “If he comes in here with a weak excuse again I’m going to rip his ears off his face,” she mumbled in the same, awfully calm tone. “But I’m not going to wait for him.” Sometimes, she did not mind Mercury not being here. Starting her conversation without the Commander of Peace, reduced the whispers in her ear by a lot. After all… Mercury disagreed with her ways. Which caused Cratos to go completely insane, telling her how Mercury never had belonged here. How she needed to finally kill the outsider. Something she wasn’t quite planning to do.

The Conclave is going to be soon and the Commander has her eye on a Second. Is anyone willing to check him out?” her first question louded. Because the Conclave wasn’t quite as natural as it seemed. If certain candidates were talented, but awfully unfit for Command, they would… never make it to the finish line.

Sell your soul, not your whole self
He was running late, he was running very late. But this time he did have an excuse and no one would tell him otherwise. As fast as he could he ran, pushing away branches and not trying to trip over the roots on the ground. They seriously needed to cut some of the forest down here. Maybe he should talk to Diana about that. The little bundle of joy in his arms seemed to scream, not having this whole running around and trying to not get hit by a branch in his face-thing.

Eventually, Mercury made it back to the village, out of breath and his hair being a whole mess. But, as he looked down, the kitten seemed to be perfectly fine. The vampire smiled and started walking at a normal pace. He was late anyway, so why hurry? Minerva would probably not be happy to see him, and he had no idea how the rest of the guardians was thinking.
Everything seemed to be going fine, if the kitten hadn’t jumped out of his arms. Mercury gasped. ‘’No, no! Come back!’’ He exclaimed as he started to run after the kitten again, who appeared to be much faster than he had expected. He was not going to give this up. He had worked his ass off to befriend this kitten and he was not letting it go. But the cat seemed to have different ideas and disappeared back into the forest, leaving a sad Mercury behind.

But there was no time to be sad. There was a meeting, one that already had started. And now he had no excuse. Mercury started to run again, as fast as he could. Minerva was going to murder him. Again.
Out of breath he finally reached the main door, his mismatched eyes immediately fell on the people sitting there. Oh boy, they hadn’t even waited for him. ‘’I can explain.’’ He started, raising his hands in his defence. He smiled slightly, though you could see he wasn’t completely sure about it.

’’I saw a cat.’’

Natura nihil frustra facit

The sound of the door opening, soon broke the atmosphere that was fluttering around the room. Diana tilted her head and as soon as she recognised Apollo who was walking towards them, she smiled and felt immediately less apprehensive. She didn’t know why, but there was something about the Healer that made her feel calm. Calmer than how Mercury could make her feel. The door opened once again almost immediately after, to reveal Juno behind it. Again, Diana greeted the girl with a smile, before dropping it completely after her question to Minerva. Everyone knew about the first Guardian’s demons, but it was a topic that Diana just didn’t like, not even a little. She knew how tormented Minerva was about it and felt incredibly bad because she couldn’t do anything about it. Luckily they had Mercury. Thanks to the Commander of Peace, sometimes the bringer of war, could have some serenity too.

The last Guardian was nowhere to be seen, but the voice of the girl sitting in front of her was alarmingly calm and quiet even if she was literally threatening the youngest. Obviously, this wasn’t the first time that something like that happened, but Mercury seemed unable to learn his lesson and Minerva had all the reasons to be angry. ’The Conclave is going to be soon and the Commander has her eye on a Second. Is anyone willing to check him out?’ Minerva’s voice drew Diana’s attention back to her and her words. She didn’t expect this to be the reason why she called upon the meeting, but was positively surprised.

It had been a while since she last judged on one of the people that were supposed to participate in the Conclave and the thought of finally doing something different tickled her interest. ’Maybe I could-’ Her soft voice was interrupted by the sound of the door slamming open. Mercury was on the doorway, out of breath and with his hands raised, ready to give the other Commanders his reason why he was late. From the bottom of her heart, Diana hoped it wasn’t anything stupid, as usual, for Mercury’s own sake. They were discussing a pretty important matter there, and.. ’I saw a cat.’ It was stupid. Diana’s eyes widened in surprise and with a little anxious feeling building up in her chest, she turned slowly towards Minerva to analyse her reaction.

As usual, the same old pattern started all over again. After all those centuries, nothing really surprised him anymore. Mercury was nowhere to be seen, and Minerva was too impatient to wait for him. Even with time on their immortal side, she was always in a hurry. When she started threatening the Commander of Peace, he slightly frowned. He never agreed with her harsh way of treating the younger one. He decided to ignore it when she started explaining the reason why she had called them together. “The Conclave is going to be soon and the Commander has her eye on a Second. Is anyone willing to check him out?” She said. The Healer kept quiet again. Even though he sometimes enjoyed taking a hike, he wasn’t too eager to go and meet the Commander’s new Second.

Diana was the one to consider the proposition. Before she could speak, the lost son finally decided to join them. His excuse was so typical it brought a little smile around his lips. The others were.. Not so amused. Especially Minerva. In the blink of an eye, a demon appeared behind her. The Commander placed both his hands in front of him on the table. He turned towards Mercury first. ”Welcome, Brother. I’m glad you decided to still join us”, He said. Then he fixed his blue eyes on Minerva. ”We both know I’m going to be the one to clean up the mess your demon causes. So please reconsider your actions”, He continued, a gentle urge to not hurt the other vampire. Even though he had rapid healing and would probably heal up within the day, the Commander of Health would be obliged to help him with his magic, as that was his duty.

The calmth in Minerva’s voice when she threatened to rip Mercury’s ears off his head if he had a weak excuse for why he was late, would have been rather scary, if it weren’t for the fact that Juno was used to Minerva’s threats. She knew full well that Minerva would never actually kill any of them. Her love for Mother was too big and Juno knew - or hoped - that it was big enough to keep her from actually ripping Mercury’s ears off. Because all of them knew that the boy would not have a good excuse for his absence right now, he rarely had one. ”I’m not sure if ripping off his ears is a wise thing to do, he would never again be able to listen and would probably infinitely keep talking and talking.” She loved Mercury; perhaps because he was younger than all the others and came from a time that was more close to hers. Perhaps because he was different, perhaps even because he always seemed to be able to surprise her and probably the others as well. She loved surprises. To her surprise, Minerva didn’t speak of war, but of the Conclave and the boy that was probably going to be Lexa’s second. She nodded quietly when Diana started to speak, and was about to agree with the woman, if it weren’t for the fact that her sentence was interrupted by the creak of a door that was just opened.

There, in the opening, stood Mercury. She couldn’t help but smile at him. His excuse was pathetic, to say at the least, which made her slightly anxious for the outburst that might happen right next to her. She turned her head towards Minerva, listening to Apollo’s words as well. She nodded. ”Please, do think about the rugs, Min. We don’t want them to get all bloody.” It would be a shame if, after so many centuries of keeping them clean, they would get blood on them. And all that thanks to a cat. She quickly turned her attention towards Mercury again, nodding to the chair he usually sat on. ”Take a seat, we were just about to discuss who was going to check on the possible second Lexa has been eyeing.” She explained. ”I’m going to agree with Diana, I think she should go.” After all, it had been a long time ago since Diana checked up on any of the possible seconds. It was only fair if she got to do it this time. And she knew, for sure, that Diana was a way better option than Minerva at the moment - the poor kid would probably lose his head within the first few seconds if she were to judge him.

Can't you feel them breathing down your neck?
Diana was exactly who she had in mind herself. Diana was a nice woman. Or, at least, nicer than she was. Juno was the protector of the people, but Juno had also been the one to head out when it had been Lexa’s turn. This time Diana could prove her judgement, see what could possibly be the new Commander. Her opinion would be valuable. As it would possibly mean the death of a young boy, simply because faith could not always make the wisest decision. They had to help. So, when Diana spoke up, Minerva smiled.
A smile that was immediately swept off her face as the door opened. Slowly, her blue eyes moved to the boy who stood there. His explanation was complete bullshit and made her consider to rip every cat in the entirety of Vanaheim in two pieces. She put her nails into the palm of her hand, to the point where black blood spilled started dripping on the table. She clenched her teeth and stared at the boy, fury in her blue eyes.

Cratos took this moment of weakness and showed his teeth as he changed from his shadowform inside her head into the demon he truly was. Now visible to everyone, the black panther stood behind her. His nails scratched over the fur he was standing on, as he slowly took a step forward, his bright blue eyes focused on the boy. A low, terrifying sound came from his chest, almost made the room vibrate as he almost seemed to… smile.

The bleeding hand seemed to shake as the woman sat in pure silence, her blue eyes spitting fire at the boy. She heard how Apollo tried telling her about the mess, after which Juno told her not to do it. To think about the rugs. Juno’s calmth distracted her for a second, caused the Warrior to look at the Protector for a few seconds, before she slapped her hand on the table, causing the blood to make quite a mess on it. At least it wasn’t on the rug.
I am going to give you five seconds to sit down on that chair and keep your mouth shut, or I will let Cratos have his way with you,” she spoke, trying to sound calm, but the fire was clear in her voice.
Cratos, go,” she hissed, looking over her shoulder. The panther growled, but disappeared back into the shadows as he sat down, only to turn back to his form in her head. ‘He’s not worthy, Minerva,’ he whispered, but she ignored it, turning her gaze to Diana.

You want to go?

Sell your soul, not your whole self
He hadn't only seen a cat, he had also touched one, he had hugged it. It had been his plan to take him to his home and get it to live with him, but the stupid beast had decided to escape. And now he stood here, empty handed with the lamest excuse he could ever think of, but because the cat wasn't here, he had no proof. So, he was basically lying to them while simultaniously speaking the truth.

Seeing Minerva was enough to get him nervous. Seeing Cratos on the other hand, oh boy, if his heart was still beating it would have skipped six beats by now. The vampire stumbled back against the door. He hadn't known Minerva would be this mad. Maybe if he showed her the kitten, she would forgive him? Apollo and Juno on the other hand, jumped to the rescue.
Mercury nodded at the older Vampire as a thanks, before almost letting out a relieving sigh when Minerva told him to sit down or he would be dinner for Cratos. Mercury almost dived into his chair, almost letting it fall over. ''Sorry, sorry.'' He mumbled, anxiously running a hand through his hair and staring at his hands. Juno's information was welcoming, Mercury only nodding along and keeping his mouth shut, as he was told.

If only he had the kitten with him. Things would've gone completely different.

Natura nihil frustra facit

Everything happened within few seconds. Diana could sense the tension, could touch it, could literally see it, when the shadow behind Minerva turned into Cratos. During the centuries, the Guardians started to know all the Warrior’s demons one by one, their personalities and their names, because they were real and sometimes just couldn’t be tamed.

Hearing Apollo and Juno’s reassuring words to Minerva, the Huntress realised that even if she couldn’t hold herself or her demon back, the other two would’ve had Merc’s back and Diana just didn’t want any more violence, especially in that room, so she would’ve helped too, even though the Warrior had all the reasons to be angry at him, again.

Everyone’s gaze was directed towards Mercury now. They were waiting for him to take his seat, waiting for him to finally take the chance they gave to him and do the right thing. It was only when he finally sat down that Diana realised she was holding her breath. She exhaled, relieved in knowing that no one was going to get hurt that day. ’Once again, crisis avoided’ She found herself commenting with a sort of bitter-ish tone in the back of her mind.

Once the tension was relieved, Diana noticed Minerva’s blood on the table. The look she gave to the little blood drops was quick, before she could look back at the Warrior’s face, when she asked her if she really wanted to go to see this Commander’s Second that everyone was talking about. The Huntress shrugged as if it wasn’t really a big deal, and then nodded once. ’I mean, it’s been a while since I’ve last done it, so yes, I would like to go.’ She spoke in a very polite, soft and calm tone, trying to ease a little bit more the uneasiness that built up in few seconds just before. ’If everyone agrees, that is.’ The woman then added, looking at everyone’s face, no one excluded.

The smell of blood was in the air as the Warrior had hurt her own hands in the process of trying to stay in control. As a vampire, the scent was hard to miss, and the Healer immediately worried. Not only for Minerva, but also for Mercury. This was a dangerous situation and they had to diffuse it. Not in this room. It would be a dishonour to their Mother and he would not allow it. Luckily Juno seemed to be on his side too. Together, they managed to calm Minerva down enough for her to send the demon away. The panther was obviously very displeased, but no more blood would be spilled.

Mercury finally got the hint and sat down, right on time to avoid making it worse. The elder vampire turned his attention back to the meeting, folding his hands around the lyre in his lap again. When Diana looked around, he nodded when their gaze met. ”Sounds good to me”, He said. It was not a simple task, but he trusted her to carry it out with the dedication that was expected from her.

Juno's eyes were fixed on Minerva for a bit, frowning slightly. She could smell the scent of blood and her eyes moved downwards to Minerva's hands. The woman next to her seemed to struggle with the demon that had now appeared behind them; Cratos. She knew the woman long enough to know that the demons she spoke to, where not only in her head. They were real demons and ever since Ceres was gone, they had become worse. For a split second, Juno thought that Minerva had lost to her demons. That would have ended this meeting in a bloodbath, they all knew that and she could sense the tension in the air. When Cratos disappeared again, however, everyone seemed to be able to breathe again. She sighed, looking over to Mercury. Strictness in her eyes: if he was going to make this worse for himself and for all of them, Minerva wouldn’t be all of his worries. She could accept the fact that he had been late - no matter how lame his excuse was - but if he was going to start a fight, right here, in this sacred place created by the Mother… no, she would be very angry with him. Luckily for the boy, he decided to be wise for once and not say a thing. He sat down on his chair, almost diving into it and Juno nodded slightly. Glad that he did what was asked from him.

She already confirmed that she agreed with Diana heading out to check on the new possible second, so when a confirmation was asked from Diana, the woman only nodded. She had been the one lucky enough to judge Lexa, after all. It was now the Huntress’ her turn to head out and to judge of the young boy was actually what they looked for in a Commander. A good ruler. One that not only made decisions with his heart, but also with his brains. It was true that the Conclave wasn’t all about surviving and being the strongest; sometimes they had to interfere, for someone who is only strong, isn’t always the best leader.

Can't you feel them breathing down your neck?
For once, Mercury seemed to use his brain. He rushed into his chair and apologized. She could feel the nerves in the air as he ran his hand through his hair. Minerva nodded thankfully to Juno, who had been smart enough to explain their current situation to the boy. Because if Minerva would have had to do this, the words would have been spoken with a lot more fire. Instead, it gave her the chance to calm herself down for a second. She did that by closing her eyes and taking a deep breath in, even if she didn’t need it.

Everyone seemed to agree on Diana taking the boy. It had indeed been a while since Diana had last gone, even though Minerva tended to think that Diana and Juno were her best bets. They were both charming, young-looking ladies that didn’t quite seem as terrifying as she did. Nor as quiet as Apollo was, in general. And unlike with Mercury, Minerva trusted their opinion. “Then it has been decided,” she spoke. “His name is Orion. He’s a shifter,” she explained calmly. “A young smith too.” That was about as much as she had gained without attracting his attention. “I want to know if his head and heart are in the right place.” With Lexa it had been. With the Commander before her, they thought it had been. Sadly, the power had gotten to his head and things had gotten a bit out of hand. Something she didn’t want to happen again.

But there is something else I’d like to discuss as well.” There it was. War.
