THROUGH DISASTER AND DECAY
survive to fight another day

In the dead of night Romeo had finally found the courage to leave his cabin. The Shark had been in the harbour of Sunfall since the late afternoon, but he had been in hiding ever since they had brought him there after the attack on Seere. He didn’t dare to show his face to the crew, let alone to the random people that would be crowding the streets of the city. The villa was only accessible through the center, via the main road. There was no way he would walk down that road when there were people outside, in broad daylight. So now was the time. In silence, the man had made his way towards the only person he would ever trust enough to show up in a state like this.

Because things were not good. They were not even okay. Lost in thoughts, he was not even paying attention to Elodie, who was keeping him company in the meantime. He still didn’t quite get why she wanted to stay with him, but it was not up to him anymore to decide where she could and couldn’t go. He would seek shelter with Maverick, and if she wanted, she would surely be welcome too. For as long as she would be able to deal with him, that was. Anyway.

Where he had had the audacity to go straight inside last time he had visited, he now obeyed the guard who told them to wait in the great hall. Which was, seeing the hour, probably for the best. He wouldn’t want them to think he was here to kill the Governer or whatever. Luckily his appearance was quite a memorable one, so at least the guard gave in to the request of speaking to the man. It was late, yes, so hopefully he wasn’t asleep just yet.

Separate
and
ever deadly
Clings onto my throat
and won't let go
His short visit to Navarre had been truly beautiful, but the news of Lord Morrigan losing Isla de Juegas had urged him to come back to his city sooner than he had wanted. Things were stirring up in Rhoynar. Again. As if the islands hadn’t been through enough already. The mysterious plague had grown into an epidemic, killing countless of civilians as the Sunfallian infirmaries couldn’t keep up with the patients anymore. The governor even wanted to plan a meeting with Hathor, knowing that the priests were the only ones who knew the exact number of plague victims in the city.
His unopened luggage and brass-fitted suitcases were still scattered around his room when a familiar voice Jasper recognized as one of his guards called for him. There was a visitor waiting for him in the hall.

Romeo. He knew something was off by the way the guard pronounced his name. His last visit to Sunfall had been a surprise visit as well with only a note indicating he had gone back to Brightwater Keep again, but this felt different. Romeo knew Jasper would always be there for him if he needed him – but the governor was aware the young man was way too proud and way too independent to ask his former mentor for help.

Maybe tonight would be a turning point.

He immediately recognized the silhouette standing in the candlelit hall, and Jasper halted for a few seconds, urging the guard to step away from him. ’Romeo,’ he said, walking closer as his voice broke the tense silence. He looked dishevelled, defeated even. He wasn’t the bright young captain that had visited Sunfall months ago anymore. His bleak appearance was hard to miss; it shone off him like an aura, even in the dimly lit hall where a few rays of moonlight shone through the colonnade of columns adjacent to the hall. Jasper cleared his throat as he looked at Romeo, mentally preparing to say the only sentence that came to his mind. ’What happened to you?’

THROUGH DISASTER AND DECAY
survive to fight another day

Being back at the villa was strange. He had thought he would feel more at ease here, but he didn’t. The somewhat familiar environment was still a hostile one. Even though it was late, a lot of people were walking around. Every unexpected noise startled him, which made him look around like a wild animal trapped in a cage. His heartbeat was raised, and he was painfully aware of it thrumming at the base of his throat. Suddenly he felt like a child again, hopelessly hiding from his mother when she was blinded by her rage. Whenever he fell into her hands when she was having an episode, she would do the most cruel things to him. As a punishment for her own torment, because she believed he was the source of it all. Especially after Killian had left, taking the twins with him. Leaving his eldest son behind with the monster that was supposed to be his mother.

She had never been one, nor would she have ever been capable of fulfilling that role. His father had failed in that as well. The only person that had cared for the young child, was now walking up to him. Clearly worried, he could hear it in his voice. Romeo shifted his weight slightly so he could face the man. He was not comfortable, at all, and it showed. His shoulders were hanging low, as if he tried really hard to just disappear into thin air.

’What happened to you?’

The question he had expected. He couldn’t just show up here, looking like an absolute mess, without Maverick asking why. His gaze dwelled towards the other, a hint of despair and hopelessness through the hurt he was feeling. ”I got hurt”, He said, barely able to get the words out loud enough. ”I need your help”, He then said, again submitting to that strange feeling when he stated that out loud. Exposing a very vulnerable side he had never showed before. He didn’t quite go into the details of what had happened. First of all because he had a hard time remembering and he didn’t want to dig too deep right now. Second, there were people around, and even though he dared to open up to Maverick, he surely didn’t want anyone to overhear them.
