A lost cause

I WON'T LOOK TO THE HEAVENS
i found hell where i stand
The week he had spent at the cabin, had put him back on track. It had been exactly what he needed. Some time away from everyone to let his sadness take him over completely. Secluded and hidden away so no one could see him break down. He always wanted to be a rock for other people, yet he found it difficult to seek the same support with them when he needed it. Or at least not in the obvious ways. His call for help had found its way to Lexa, and she had answered. Without really knowing she had pulled him out of the darkness and healed his heart. Or, she had realised, since he had been acting quite weird from time to time. The hurt showing in his eyes when he couldn’t hold it back no more. But in the end, her presence had put him back together, because that had been all he truly needed.
And now he was on his way to Brightwater Keep to meet up with his sire. He would avoid seeing Kaz, as the man had requested. He would respect his wish, how difficult it might be. First, he needed to get there. Because above all, he was excited to reunite with Edmund. He felt relieved to know he could soon stop worrying. The elder vampire would fix this all. That thought was really driving him forward. He encouraged Bastion to pick up the pace just a bit more. The cabin was not that far away from the capital of Rhoynar, so it would not be a long trip. The horse was, like his ancestors, trained for long distances. He was not getting tired at all, and in the far distance he could already see the walls of the city, glowing in the early morning light.

She wouldn’t have expected the Grand Duchess to be this stupid, but apparently she was. She had sent out a bird to Mort, one she had lovingly managed to take down. Mort was to be expected in the castle, because Edmund was to arrive soon. While Isabella had, at first, planned to wait for Edmund, she knew that this was a chance she just had to take. The thought of catching Mort before he would even have a chance to arrive at the damn castle would be amazing. Especially because Edmund had no proof that it was her doing. Then at least she had something to reassure her safety for when she finally got to meet her sire once more, after all these years. The thought of meeting him did not scare her, like it would a normal person. Instead, it filled her with this excitement, fueled by rage. She was ready.
She had never been one to shoot a bow, but she was sure she could at least try. She had set herself on top of a horse, a stolen one of course, covering most of her face with a hood. While that should cause her not to be recognized, she also knew that it made her stand out. Luckily, there didn’t seem to be anyone around in the early morning. If Mort were to arrive much later, it could be troublesome, however.
Luckily, that didn’t seem the case, as her supernatural hearing picked up the sound of hooves soon enough. While at this point she had no idea who it was yet, she turned her back to him, calmly stepping off her horse. It was a big horse, causing her to be barely visible as she stood next to it. She calmly took the bow off her back and aimed it at the passerby, invisible to him until his back was turned to her. And this time, it actually was him. So, she shot. Hoping to either hit him or the horse, so he would fall off.

The closer he got to the city, the more excited he got. He was looking forward to meeting up with his sire again. They had a lot to talk about, and not only about the events of the last few weeks. He had only been away for three months, yet it felt like an eternity. So much had happened and he wanted to get some feedback on his latest updates. Sure, he had written some letters, but it wasn’t the same as talking face to face. Hopefully he would arrive at the castle first, so he could give Edmund the welcome he deserved. Because he wasn’t quite sure Allison would be able to be as warm to him as he hoped she would be. No offence.
The sudden sound of an arrow being fired interrupted his thoughts. Before he could locate where it was coming from, Bastion let out a scream of pain. The horse panicked, bucking wildly. It was not really a surprise he was not able to stay in the saddle. With a loud thud he landed on the ground, again not quite elegantly. He knew he couldn’t stay down though. Someone had fired an arrow at him, with the clear intent to get him or the horse hurt. So that meant.. He was in danger.

The woman had to admit to be impressed that the arrow actually hit. While it did not hit the vampire, it hit the horse, causing the exact effect she had been hoping for. As calm as ever, clearly unimpressed by the fledgling, she put the bow back on her back, getting rid of the hood that covered most of her face. She walked up to him, a smile on her face as she did. As always, she was in control. And man, did it feel good. She knew how the boy was, avoiding any conflict. He wasn’t the one she would like to torture as he, unlike his brother, would give in almost immediately. So, that wasn’t quite her intention today. Yet, it wouldn’t hurt to scare him a little.
“Hello there, Mort, ” she finally spoke, playing with the arrow she was holding between her fingers. “How is your brother doing? ” She just couldn’t help herself, had to ask him the question. Because she was well aware in what kind of state she had returned the younger vampire. Not only had she ruined his leg and ego, she had managed to go deep. She had broken him in a way she could have never hoped to. He had given up. And how she hoped that it would never fully be fixed. That Mort would look at his brother in a hundred years, remembering the pain he had caused.

The fall hadn’t really wounded him, but it sure hurt. He should stop falling off horses, before it became a habit. Bastion had darted away, probably as fast as the arrow that had hit him. Disappearing between the trees, in the direction they had come from. Perhaps he was running back to the cabin, or he was going straight for Mother’s Heart. How Mort wish he could do the same. For a second, he considered it. Up until that point, he thought his attacker was a random bandit. One who lurked in the shadow of the forest, waiting for a passerby like him to rob. He could outrun a bushranger, for sure. No doubt.
Unfortunately, when a shady figure emerged from the shrubs, he knew running would be useless. How she had found him, was a mystery to the young vampire. But she was the last person he wanted to meet here, far away from any safe place to hide. Now he had nowhere to go. He just watched her get closer, panic reaching for his throat as his gaze locked with hers. He barely registered her words. His eyes darted away, clearly looking for a way out. A place to run, now he still had the chance. Because even though he knew the chances he would get away were almost non-existent, he had to try. Because he wasn’t planning on staying with her, at all.

The clear panic was like a drug to her, as she could feel the excitement in her bones. All the while, she just calmly stepped in his direction again. Because she knew she was quicker than he would ever be, making the decision to run a dumb one. She would love to see him try, however, as she was sure she could outrun him no doubt and he was probably not stupid enough to believe that she couldn’t. So, his options were limited. Trying to fight her was probably not the best idea either, as she doubted he had any experience. And if he did, it was probably Edmund’s. Who had learned her how to fight too. So he would be the most predictable opponent she had ever had.
“Look, ” she told him calmly, still moving the arrow between her fingers, “I want you to come with me, or I will have to go for your brother again. ” She wouldn’t. She had no interest in taking Kaz again, as she doubted Edmund would actually care. She just wanted to see if Mort cared more about his own life, or his brother’s. If he would run for the hills, knowing she would hurt the brother he claimed to love again, or if he would let himself be taken so his brother would be safe.

It was hard to understand how, out of all people, she was the one he crossed paths with again. Almost as if she had planned this out. As if she had known he would come by this road this morning. But that was impossible, right? Also, why would she? Wasn’t she getting exactly what she had been wishing for in the first place? She was after Edmund, who was on his way to Rhoynar. What could he possibly offer her that was worth more than that? It made no sense at all. And it only added to the panic rising in his chest. Because yes, he was scared. But who wouldn’t be? He had seen what she was capable of. He also realised he had no chance to either run from her or fight her. So he would just have to hope for the best. That she was only here by coincidence, and she wanted to have a nice and friendly conversation.
That hope quickly faded away when she made her intentions clear. When she mentioned Kaz, a flare of rage sparked up for a second. A frown appeared and he subconsciously clenched his fists. He wasn’t particularly good at fighting, but his instincts to protect his brother were still as strong as ever. Even after the younger vampire had basically banished him and cast him aside like he was a useless piece of trash. ”No”, He replied, his voice more steady than he had thought. ”I got you everything you wanted. You have to leave us both alone”, He continued. That had been their deal, right? Well, not entirely. But she wanted Edmund and he had almost delivered that, so neither him or his brother had anything to do with her anymore.
