Not as expected

Today, it was rather calm in the infirmary. The last patient already left about an hour ago and it seemed that there weren’t going to be many others coming in that day. For many, this would be a great opportunity to take it easy at home, but for Eideard, it was almost like torture. This empty time caused him to think about Makana and the possible things that could have happened to her. He noticed he was only feeling more and more melancholy, and in order to avoid ending the day as a complete wreck, he decided to do that one thing that could make him forget about the mental pain. Someone else in his situation would probably do that by drinking, but Eideard’s way of clearing his mind was far less damaging. Mostly.
That noon, he had stopped working earlier than usual – if you could call it working with no patients around – and had asked Rhett to keep an eye on the place, after which he walked towards the corral next to his house. His seal brown horse stood out next to his two smaller, lighter pack ponies that all inhabited the same corral. Eideard didn’t pay too much attention to the two of them and saddled Ebony up as usual, whom he lead out of the corral and mounted almost immediately after he had closed the gate. He rode towards the entrance of Mother’s Heart, planning to just ride around outside for about an hour, but as he came near the opening, it seemed that something or someone was blocking the way.
OOC: Lexa first!
- And as a bonus, this very same post in Dutch because I forgot I wanted to write this in English:

fiercer than fire
The woman clenched her hand around her spear as she looked at the dead body of the cat. It couldn’t have been one of her people: they knew the rules. Use everything, don’t leave dead bodies to waste. Because they wanted to keep the wildlife intact, but also because they didn’t want to lure in any monsters that wanted to eat the corpse.
Yet, as she grasped its body and tried to pull it, she heard a faint noise come from underneath it. As she lifted the body, she found… a young one. Barely a week of ten, couldn’t be much more. A tiny cougar young. She let go of the mother and lifted the young by its neck, holding it right in front of her face as she frowned. “You’re not going to survive on your own, ” she told the thing, as it made a slight noise. It was… cute. Though of course she’d never admit to that. Her gaze went to the mother and she thought for a second. If she could manage to get this thing tamed, to get it to listen to her… It would be a good source of protection. Of course that was the reason she was considering this. Not the fact that it was cute. Absolutely not.
‘That’s our skin!’ she heard, as some guy turned towards her. The brunette raised her eyebrows as she started laughing. Today was one of the rare days where she took the day off for herself, no Commander business. Which was the reason she didn’t have the black makeup all over her face and probably the reason this guy had dared to approach her like this. Or, maybe he was just stupid. “You hunted down a caring mother, ” she said, frowning. “You’re not even going to get close to this fur. ”
Long story short - there were now three bodies instead of one, so she would have to send someone to go clean it up. What a fucking mess. She sighed once and picked up the cougar pup. “You’re coming with me, ” she told the young beast, before she got on her horse and put the thing between her legs. She clenched her teeth together as one of the wounds she gained in the fight stinged. She’d have to go and see doctor Breck for that.
As she arrived in the village, it seemed like Breck was just about to leave. “I need your help ” she told him, as she got off her horse, the pup in one hand. As she got off, she grasped her stomach and moaned in pain for a second, but managed to get herself together and look at the old man with a faint smile. Seems like he wasn’t going home just yet.

A young girl with a black horse entered the city just when Eideard was about to leave. He recognized her as Vanaheims Commander, Lexa, even though she wasn’t wearing her trademark face paint today. Most other people probably wouldn’t be able to identify her without it, but Eideard was her doctor - of course he knew what one of his regulars looked like without make-up of any kind. However, the lack of face paint wasn’t the thing he was worried about. Lexa looked anything but comfortable on the back of her horse, which she dismounted after saying she needed help. As if she had to provide some proof of that, she grasped her stomach in pain as soon as she got on the ground. "I can see that," Eideard replied while dismounting his own horse, after which he walked a bit closer, leading his mare with one hand. Using his magic as a form of a quick analysis, he was able to see that the Commander had gotten some nasty wounds – especially the one near her stomach needed treatment as soon as possible. "Do you think you’re able to walk all the way to the infirmary?" he asked, now standing next to Lexa. After all, he didn’t know how much blood she’d lost and he’d have to be able to catch her if she was about to collapse. As focused as Eideard was on helping her out, he hadn’t realized Lexa was carrying around a living cougar cub.

When the doctor asked if she was able to walk all the way, she nodded. “Can do. ” She let go of her horse and started walking, still carrying the pup by its neck, while looking at it. “Do you think you can take a look at this one too? ” she decided to ask, sounding a bit careful. She didnt want people to misunderstand and think she cared for the beast. Of course not. It was just a solid investment. Having a grown cougar would be a good defense… Yes. Absolutely. Her line of thought got broken by a sharp pain through her side and she stopped walking for a second, clenching her teeth. “Let’s get this over with, ” she whispered to herself, before she stepped forward again. She couldn’t afford to show any weakness and needed these wounds treated. Right now.

My heart to joy at the same tone And all I loved, I loved alone Even though Eideard had some doubts about it, Lexa declared that she would be able to walk. As she let go of her horse, Eideard took its bridle in a reflex in order to lead the animal the right way. It was possible that its owner had taught it to follow, but the old doctor didn’t want to risk even more problems. As if two animals – both Lexa’s and his own horse – weren’t enough to handle, the Commander asked if he could take a look at the creature she was carrying. With all the commotion Eideard only noticed now what exactly she was carrying: a cougar cub. It took him a couple of seconds to get over his initial surprise and confusion. "Is that a... Of course I can," he answered. This was not the time for idle chatter over a wild animal. As they were walking towards their destination, Eideard made sure Lexa stayed within his sight. He turned to her as soon as he noticed the young woman stopped walking, but it seemed that she managed to keep moving on. For now, at least. The infirmary was still some decametres away at this point and Eideard figured it might be a good idea to already ask some questions to save some valuable minutes. "What is the cause of your injuries?" he asked without slowing down. |
