She goes where the wind takes her

It was early in the morning as the lady walked outside of the estate and pulled the door behind her. The carriage was already waiting for her. Packed with her most important belongings for the journey through the country. Her journey today was to head back to the country she was once born and she had once loved so much. ‘Loved’ because of the family that she have there.

‘Life’ had been so much different in Navarre then it ever was in Mothers heart. Mothers heart was a rough city. A city you had to take care of yourself and survive. Surviving was the only option there. And here in Navarre life had been so much easier and comfortable for her. Although she still could not get used to the life at court. All the pretty dresses and shaped faces that had pointed her eyes on her made her feel so uncomfortable that day. And it still does. Ever since she made her entrance in the castle at the masked ball and showed some lords and dukes her paintings she had to paint them in several ways.
-
After a few days of travelling the authentic landscape of Vanaheim dimmed up in her eyes. The iconic orange rocks and vast planes brought back old memories. Where she would ride with her brothers and sisters on their ponies. They rode all the way to the bay of fire and back to mothers heart. Letting their worried parents behind. A soft smile appeared on her lips as she though back at the time. Syrena leaned forward and picked the sketching book from her bag. She let the small pencil run through her fingers and started sketching some ideas and things she had seen while travelling to Mothers heart.
-
It was almost dawn as she arrived in the city. The orange light of the sun made the landscape look like as it was on fire. She loved it. She loved the landscape, the people, the lights. But there was still that empty feeling she had while she thought back about this place. Her mother.

A soft sigh ran down her lips as she moved herself out of the carriage picking up her belongings from the carriage. And as she had payed the man she turned herself around and made her way through the city. Letting her gaze run over all the people.

It had been a normal morning for Eideard. He had woken up before the sun had even risen and had visited some of the patients that needed some attention every day. Some of them needed their daily medicine and others simply had to be checked upon. By the time dawn came around, Eideard had finished his routine through the city and he was already walking back towards his house, leading his horse with one hand. He allowed himself to enjoy the morning a bit and admired the way the light of the rising sun played with his surroundings, bathing everything in warm colours. The citizens of Mother’s Heart were starting to enter the streets as well and Eideard didn’t pay too much attention to them, until he noticed something – or rather, someone. Even though the early sunlight gave everything an orange hue, the young woman further down the road was unmistakably blonde. That in itself wasn’t too extraordinary, but the way she carried herself, so careful and atypical for a Child, strongly reminded him of someone. As Eideard came closer, he became more sure that this was indeed said person. "Syrena?" he said, with a surprised tone in his voice. After all, he never suspected he would see his daughter today.

She goes where the wind takes her

The city looked larger then she could remember. Crooked houses; that where build not for the eyes but most of them for safekeeping from te livestock, belongings of the villagers and most important: Usefulness. Mothers heart was build for travelling and that was what they did. Sometimes when stock run out, or when the storms ruined the landscape where the villagers had their farmyards on.

"No other village compares to Mother's Heart. It is the seat of the High Matriarchs, a center of Pagan life, a jewel of the Sacred Land." her brother once told her. She had laughed about it. But as she saw the landscape again. She knew it must be true.

It was not very long ago that Syrena was used to this kind of living. But right now. With her own estate and small art supply store she did not want to think about living here again. A visit to her father and other family members now and then made her heart feel at ease, but secretly she could not wait for her to return to Navarre. Hoping she could bring her family members to the estate she bought and maybe even to the castle. They had to see it. Even if it was just for one time.

As her light blue eyes followed all the souls that went by she almost fell over another one that almost bumped into her. Her eyes widened a bit as Syrena took a step back and made a small bow. I am sorry sir. I was not looking where I was going. The men nodded back and then continued his own business again.

Syrena walked on through the busy ’streets’ of the city and searched for a place she could stay for the night. Of course she could have asked her father to stay with him but she didn’t want to disturb him with her briefly visitings.

And then there was that voice. That voice she could recognise out of a thousand voices. Her face light up as she looked around where the sounds could came from. Syr turned around and she looked at the man who stepped towards her. D..Dad?! she began with a honeyed voice. A bright smile fancies her rosy lips as she placed her belongings on the ground and made her way towards the man.

My heart to joy at the same tone
And all I loved, I loved alone

As the young woman turned around, any trace of doubt disappeared from Eideard’s mind. This was Syrena. She had recognized him as well – how long had it been since he had heard her voice? – and started walking towards him. "…You’re here?" he asked, still somewhat dumbfounded by the fact that Syrena was in Mother’s Heart. Of course he was overjoyed to see his daughter again, but he knew she had been living in Navarre for a while now, which lied all the way on the other side of Fallen Skies. It would take a tremendous amount of time to get from Navarre to Mother’s Heart – at least, in Eideard’s point of view, which made this visit all the more surprising.

She goes where the wind takes her

The travel had taken long. For almost a week she had been traveling through the country in search for mother heart again. She knew the way and it's dangers. She knew there was a lot that could go wrong but the last thing that Syrena wanted is to close her small atelier and move back to Vanaheim again. She loved the place and she loved the country and the people even more. But Navarre had stole her heart from the moment she had set foot in it. Not only Navarre kept her heart. Also that man.. That man she had met the night of the royal ball where she wanted to show people her portraits. It would be a disaster for her to leave it all behind.

But right now she was back. And she had missed her family and friends so much that the pain of leaving them only grew stronger. I am, Dad she whispered. It felt as if her heart was in her throat and she threw herself in his arms. Her heart filled with joy.

Perhaps it was his parental intuition that made Eideard open his arms right at the moment that Syrena threw herself at him. He immediately folded his arms around her and held her tightly in a hug, as if he never wanted to let go of her again. Which, mostly in a figurative sense, was true. "It’s been too long", he eventually said in a whisper, after which he slowly let go of her. "What brings you to Mother's Heart, my dear?" he asked warmly, still somewhat surprised by his daughter’s seemingly sudden arrival.

She goes where the wind takes her

As he threw his arms around her she folded her arms around his back and let her head rest on his shoulder for a moment. It has been, I have missed you and the rest so much. as she answers his words. Her voice is barely a whimper and got washed away by the wind in an instant. She felt the pressure around her being released and also let go of him. Creating some distance between the two of them. She let her hand glide through some locks of her hair and brushes them away behind her ear. Well she continued in a soft voice. I have made some paintings you might want to see. In an instant her voice lit a bit up. Plus, I wanted to see you guys and I am searching for a secret ingredient for my paint. Her words died and with that she picked up her belongings from the ground and looked up at her father again. How are things going here? she wondered.

Eideard couldn’t help but smile when Syrena explained her reasons for paying a visit to the city where she had grown up. It didn’t surprise him that part of her reason had something to do with her paintings – he knew how much she loved to draw and paint – but he was more than glad that she had also come to visit her family. "I’d love to see them," he said, referring to the paintings Syrena had talked about. While his daughter picked up her belongings Eideard noticed that his horse’s long reins had slipped away from his hand and had gotten around his arm, so he quickly grabbed them and held them tightly in his hand again. He had probably let loose of them unknowingly while talking, but luckily the horse was trained well enough to just stand there and wait for her owner to give her any directions. Eideard turned back to Syrena right at the moment she looked up at him again, asking how things were going here. "Oh, same old, same old…" he replied. "The city hasn’t moved since your last visit, and Rhett and Matthew are still living at my place. Speaking of which… You need somewhere to stay while you’re here, don’t you?" he continued.

She goes where the wind takes her

The comfort she felt being around here again made her heart beat a little faster. She had missed the warmth of the landscape, the orange tones of the mountains, the little markets and the travelling city. But most of all her familly. Some of them have also left the city and others such as Rhett and Matthew where still around. She showed a bright smil on her face when her father talked about them. How are they doing? I hope they help you around the house with some duties. Since you have enough duties for yourself as a doctor. she hesitated. Normally she would have helped him at the house. But ever since she left she felt somewhat grief to leave him alone. Well.. I could use a place to stay for a while if you don't mind? asking him curious as she took a step closer. I could make some nice stew for you guys. The one that mother used to make when she.. her voice seemed to drift away in an endless pit her light colored eyes drifted away for a moment onto the orange sand beneath them. A bit painful she bit on her lip but looked up at him again. She smiled watery. Shall we go then? I could display out my paintings for you and show you what I made so far.

Eideard’s smile faded a little when Syrena asked after her brothers. The two youngsters were so drastically different from each other that it was near impossible to generalize how they were doing lately. "Rhett is doing very well. I’ve tasked him with taking care of the horses, though I doubt he sees that as a chore. Sometimes he helps me with other tasks around the house, if I ask him to do so," he answered warmly. His youngest son could be somewhat lazy with most of his chores, but he knew he had a sense of responsibility – the horses had never looked as good as they did recently. "And Matthew…" Eideard let out a deep sigh as his smile faded from his face. "…He’s a handful," he said after a short break. He didn’t want to spoil his daughter’s visit by talking about how much trouble her other brother had been. To say he had become more and more rebellious and aggressive in the recent months would be an understatement.

His smile reappeared when Syrena asked if she could stay at his place. "Of course. I believe we have a spare bed for you somewhere," he answered fondly, after which he quietly listened to what else she had to say. Eideard heard how his daughter’s voice weakened as she spoke of her mother, and he reassuringly laid his hand on her shoulder in an attempt to comfort her. "It’s alright," he said softly, knowing how bittersweet it was for his children to talk about Makana. The subject must be at least as hard for them as it was for Eideard himself. "I’m sure it will taste wonderful." Luckily it seemed that Syrena was quick to snap out of the somber mood as she suggested to go on their way. "Sounds good to me," he replied as he let go of her shoulder. "I was just on my way home," he said as he started walking in the direction of his house.

She goes where the wind takes her

As soon as she started talking about her brothers her fathers smile faded somewhat. She was hoping they where still helping him as much as they could. He was also getting a day older and he was busy enough with his job as a doctor. And she was worrying about him from time to time. Hoping he would take care of himself also instead of other all the time. Even when it was his job to help others. Syrena tilted her head a bit to the side when he started speaking about her brothers. But once he started talking about Rhett and that he was doing fine the soft smile on her lips came back. It was good to hear something about her brothers. Not only she missed her father. But also the rest of her family. It could become quite lonely in Navarre without them. Perhaps she could invite them to her little estate so they could see how she was doing there. But that was something to discuss another time. I am glad that Rhett is doing fine and that he helps you a lot with the horses and the chores. she pauses and let him continue his words. But as he did a sigh slipped out off his mouth and she wondered what could have happened with Matthew. His smile faded from his face and she showed a worried look. Maybe I could talk to him some day? she suggested. Maybe something was bothering the boy and perhaps she could help him with that.

She was happy to hear that he had a spare bed somewhere in the house. It would be nice to hang around her old home for a while. And after all she could stay here for a longer time. She could work on some sketched for her next paintings and try some different styles. Thank you, i’d be glad to stay here for a while. she smiles

When the subject changed to her mother she swallowed one time. It had always been a hard topic for her but as her father placed his hand on her shoulder she smiled a little. Well, If I poison you guys at least you know how to heal yourself, right? she teased him a little. Her mother would not want her to be sad every time her mother came on stage. And as he let go of her shoulder and started walking she would gladly follow him. Carefully picking up her belongings and started walking next to her father. A subtle smile placed around her lips. I have missed this landscape and the people much. I don't think I will ever feel more at home anywhere else than here and perhaps that was true. Are there any plans on travelling along or will the city be here for a while? she askes him while she rearranged some locks of hair behind her ear.

My heart to joy at the same tone
And all I loved, I loved alone

When Syrena suggested that maybe she could have a word with Matthew sometime, Eideard’s eyes softened a little again. "Certainly. Maybe he’ll be more open to you than to me," he said calmly,  though there was a hint of sorrow in his voice. Though it wasn’t unusual for rebellious teenage boys, it saddened him that his own son avoided more serious conversations with him. That’s why it was no bad suggestion at all that Syrena might get through to him. As Matthew’s sister she was close to him and maybe the bond with an older sibling was just what the boy needed to open up a bit, or so Eideard hoped. At least Syrena staying with them for a while would be a welcome change of pace.

Eideard chuckled a little when Syrena managed to lighten the mood by poking a bit of fun at her cooking skills – of which Eideard was sure that they were in fact just as great as Makana’s. "I’m fairly certain I have exactly the right antidote in stock," he jokingly said. He waited for Syrena to pick up her belongings, after which he continued on the way to his home, leading his near-black horse by holding its reins. Though he now had a bit more to keep track of, he didn’t mind continuing the conversation while walking home. "You’re always welcome here," he stated when Syrena told him that she had missed her home country. Technically this was only partially correct, since the people of Mother’s Heart usually didn’t like visitors, but since Syrena was native to this town and Eideard had a good reputation he had no doubt that she’d be able to visit whenever she wanted. Or else he’d make sure of that. "For now there are still enough resources around here to stay where we are," he answered when Syrena asked if the city would be moving anytime soon, after which he glanced at his horse for a moment. "Though now that you mention it, I should probably start training Ebony again sometime soon. She hasn’t had to carry a lot lately, just the equipment I need for the daily patients, so I’ll have to make sure she’ll be able to handle everything else by the time we start moving again," he continued, giving his horse a nice pat on the neck. Eideard owned an incredible amount of items in comparison to most of the inhabitants of Mother’s Heart, and the majority of those items consisted of medicine, bandages and other medical equipment. His three horses (or, well, two ponies and a horse) needed to stay in shape to carry and pull all of that, after all.
