I wouldn’t be pretty, she had said. If his brother had managed to make her cry.. Then the odds were not really in his favour. But he had a duty to fulfil and he would do so, as Allison expected from him. It was probably not the greatest of ideas to leave Kaz alone in their room anyway, so someone had to take the responsibility to keep him company. In the meantime, she could get some well-deserved sleep. At least he could stay with his brother 24/7, as he didn’t need any of that. Though he doubted he would be actually able to sit through whatever he had in store for him. But he would try. Because it was worth it, and he loved him dearly.

The hallways were dark and almost completely abandoned. It had to be quite late. There were a few guards patrolling the castle, and he nodded at each of them when he passed by. They were, by now, used to his presence, so no one actually stopped him. The private quarters of the couple weren’t that far away either, so he arrived shortly after. Perhaps too soon. Mort took a deep breath in before knocking softly on the wood. After he heard the sign to come in, he pushed open the door, closing it behind him again when he was inside.

The moment she left was a moment he let out a very deep sigh. The vampire closed his eyes as he counted to ten and released the pressure he held on the nails in his palms. The blood was quickly to dry up and the wounds healed just as quickly. Everything was fucked up and it was fucked up badly. And it was all thanks to him. he should have been more on his guard, he should have known and he should have been preapred. But instead, he had wound up in this shitfest after all and it had only broken him more.

The pieces he tried to fit together didn't fit and the ones that did, were even more broken once you looked more closely. But he tried and he was only making it worse for himself. The vampire didn't want to admit he was a mess, but he clearly was. He just hoped Allison understood he had to do this on his own. When he had told her he was scared to love her.. something had gone wrong when he had said it. She hadn't understood him correctly. But he was too weak to tell her what he had truly meant. He had been too scared and all he wanted was to be left alone. He had always been better left alone.

The vampire had managed to limp towards the table with the wine Allison had left behind. He took the glass besides it, almost filling it up to the top and with two big gulps, it was gone. He refilled his glass again. He couldn't get drunk that easily, he knew, but maybe it could work as a placebo and loosen his thoughts, loosen the worries that were on his mind.

Kaz had his back towards the door when the knock sounded. Somewhere he believed that Allison had returned and that she still wanted to fight him. But when he called upon the person on the other side of the door to enter and no sound of a heartbeat entered the floor he almost thought his own started to beat from the sudden stress. The vampire quickly turned around, almsot ready to set a step back as he seemed.. afraid. But the frightening look in his eyes quickly faded as he saw it was not the woman but Mort standing near the door. Kaz lowered his glass and raised his eyebrow. Great. Another lecture.

When he entered the room, he didn’t really know what to expect. In what mood he would catch his brother. Would he be as angry as that day he had woken up and had realised what he had done to him? Or would he be as big of a mess as Allison had been? Perhaps he would still be in shock, not really responsive to his environment. Just staring at a wall, unfocused and caught up in his own thoughts. He wondered if Kaz was hurt by what he had done. If he realised what he had lost when he had sent his wife away. For her to come to his room, out of all places, it meant she had been looking for a last resort. Because all else had failed and she needed someone, anyone. Would his brother need him as well?

Mort tried not to set his hopes on that. He would always be there to support his brother, but the man had never been one to really express his need for help. Maybe his brother wouldn’t even want to see him. The look he got didn’t predict much though. Kaz was waiting for him to speak up, so he did. ”Allison asked me to come see you”, He explained his reason for showing up. He quickly inspected him, in which condition he was. He did not comment on any of it, not even the glass of alcohol in his hand.

What was he to say? And moreover, what was he to do? His brother clearly had come here with an objective and if he was still the same, Kaz knew he wouldn't get go of it until one of theim either exploded in anger or got too emotional to continue the conversation. Who would go down first, bet your money now!

Casually, Kaz sipped his drink, still staring at his brother who stayed at the door. He waited, patiently for him to speak up. What else could he do? He could almost not even walk and his mind was all over the place. Whatever words Kaz would spit out, they would always harm in one way or another. He was filled with poison and it was overflowing. Because of that, he had shun Allison away. And apparently she was the reason Mort had come here. Kaz looked down, swirling the win in his glass. He didn't want to think about Allison, he didn't want to think about every way he had hurt her. Kaz cleared his throat before he spoke, obviously not wanting to. ''I figured.'' It was more of a mumble, loud enough for Mort to hear. He wanted to say more, but instead shut up, his thoughts taking over his mind once again. Telling him that sending her away might have been the most stupidest mistake he had ever made.

Over all his brother appeared to be calm. Much calmer than he had prepared himself to. Hadn’t Allison warned him that it wouldn’t be pretty? He had thought he would get yelled at, or get some salty comments. He wasn’t too worried about getting physically attacked. Kaz was still wounded and probably not capable of really hurting him. But he had other ways. He had experienced those when he had been cursed. The days in his mansion hadn’t been the most enjoyable. Eventually he hadn’t been able to take it anymore, which had lead to him taking more drastic measures. An attempt to lure out his human side again. He had been preparing himself for going through that again. Spending time with someone that was merely a shadow of his brother. One out to hurt him in every way possible.

But there were no snarly comments, no insults. Nothing. Just a very calm response to what he had said, followed by more silence. ”So..”, He started, his voice dying out quickly after. Was this a question he should ask? Cause the answer was quite obvious. Yet, he wanted to show he cared about him. So he decided to ask anyway. ”How are you doing?”

Would Allison return later tonight? Or would she find another bed to sleep in? Would she abandon him completely like he had asked her, or would she try again in the morning? And would she avoid him? They were married, they ruled a kingdom together, they had to work together one way or another. Or maybe she would push him outside of his own business under the excuse that he needed to rest and heal? It wouldn't surprise him.

Patiently, Kaz waited for Mort. His eyes went through the room, looking at anything but his brother. The moon was already bright in the sky, the sun almost completely gone now. How lonely would Allison feel tonight? How hurt and how broken would she feel? Gods, he really had screwed all up. Then the question came and all respect Kaz had for his brother was almost gone. Really? That was the question? One look at Kaz and you had the answer. That was also the reason that he didn't even answer the question and instead came up with one of his own. ''Why exactly are you here, Mort?'' He cut right to it, sipping from the wine.

His attitude was just.. Cold. As if he didn’t care about anything. Sure, he still looked hurt, but only physically. At the moment, that was. There were little emotions showing and it confused him. The man he had received from Isabella at the gates had been a broken mess. The person with him in the room right now looked like he was just casually spending his evening sipping wine and not caring much about whatever was going on outside of it. Or he was just really good at hiding it, that was another possibility that crossed his mind. Mort didn’t really know how to behave himself, but when did he ever? He was just worried about Kaz, as if it was his standard setting.

''Why exactly are you here, Mort?'' Was the reply he got on his question, neutral and casual. The vampire placed his hand on the nape of his neck, softly rubbing it to seek some comfort. It was a good question. One he didn’t really know an answer to. Wasn’t it self-evident he would come check upon his brother at some point? ”I just wanted to see how you were doing, that’s all”, He answered. It was the truth anyway, so why wouldn’t he just admit that?

They shouldn't get them wrong, Kaz appreciated the worries, in fact, it warmed him that people thought he was worty enough to be cared about. But right now it was pretty obvious that he didn't want to be the main worry of the day. He was more than that. He may not look the part and he even may not feel the part, but it was what he wanted. But he couldn't get into peoples heads and remove every thought. No, he could do that only to himself.

But even that didn't seem to work. His mind had shut him out completely, just running on auto pilot. And it was the worst kind of auto pilot. Kaz managed to limp to the window, turning his back to Mort once more as he looked outside. Everything seemed so calm tonight, something that was completely contradicting with his mind. When his brother spoke again, the vampire turned around. ''I am doing horrible, but you probably knew that already.'' He answered calmy, though there seemed to be a shimmer of emotion there. Kaz wasn't really sure how to handle this situation and he rather avoided it. Somehow, that always meant he had to face them.

When people showed a lot of emotions, at least he kind of knew how to react to them. He had always been one to quietly accept people being angry or disappointed at him. Because he believed that letting out all those emotions was better in the long run. He was gladly on the receiving end of them if it meant the other would feel better afterwards. With Kaz, however, he was unsure what to do next. The man was distant and way too calm. When he finally replied to his question, he just turned around and made his way to the window. Mort stayed right where he was, frozen in his movements as he was afraid to make a wrong one and trigger some kind of reaction. He had seen how he had been anxious when he had just entered the room and he wanted to avoid making him uncomfortable.

''I am doing horrible, but you probably knew that already.'' He answered in the same calm tone. Mort softly bit down on his tongue and nodded. ”You know, if you need anything, you can always ask us. We’re here to support you, alright?” He said, mindlessly including Allison in this as well. She had told him it was worth fighting for and he automatically involved her in the way he was choosing his words.

What did Mort expect form him? THat he would pour his heart out right here on the spot or that he would finally break down? Or maybe he just came here to be punched in the face again. Well if it was one of those options, he was about to be gravely disappointed. Because all he wanted right now was to be left alone.

He got carried away by his thoughts, consuming him as they reminded him time and time again how pushing Allison away was probably the worst idea. He had probably let her feel worthless, unloved even. He hadn't meant it like that, but his words always took a wrong turn. But what was done was done, all he could do was sit it out. Or apologize. But for what? For being an ass, because that was nothing new. ''I would like to be left alone.'' Kaz replied on Mort's words, swirling the wine slowly in his glass before taking a sip. His voice sounded calm, yet the emotion started to fill it again. No matter how much he said he wanted to be left alone, even he knew that some day if not today he would need someone to lean on. And hadn't he just shunned that person away? Great going Kaz.

''I would like to be left alone.''

A request he hadn’t really expected, honestly. Or had he? He wasn’t sure what to think of this all. Had Kaz really pulled himself together in that half hour where Allison had been in his room? Then why didn’t he ask about her though. Did he truly not care about her anymore? Had he been wrong to convince her to give him another chance? It were all questions he had, but didn’t dare to ask out loud. Perhaps the other was just tired and ready to get some rest. Maybe tomorrow he would feel emotions again. So for now it might be best for him to actually get in bed, so he would have some energy to deal with reality again tomorrow. ”Alright then. Try to get some rest okay? I won’t be too far away, if you change your mind, you know”, He said with a soft smile before he finally turned around to the door.

With darkness slowly setting in, Kaz felt himself getting more awake. His body was almost fully used to his vampiric senses now and though it would take him years to master them or even learn to control them, he was glad his body had decided to finally understand that he didn't really need sleep anymore. Though, because of the recent events he would feel himself getting worn down with every step he took. His body needed to recharge and so id he mentally.

What he was about to do was just plain stupid and down right the opposite of what he had just sad. But he couldn't get the thoughts out of his head, he couldn't stop worrying and he couldn't stop blaming himself for everything. He had deserved the torture probably. It was just all the bad karma catching up to him. The vampire sighed, lowering his head as he placed the glass on the window cill. ''How is she?'' His voice was soft and maybe even a bit insecure, but he needed to know. The last thing he wanted right now was for Allison to have completely lost all hope because of the words he had said to her. he would never forgive himself.

Right when he was about to leave the room, his soft voice stopped him again. A new question was asked, quietly. One that sparked a bit of hope in his heart again. He truly did still care, like he had promised her. It confirmed he was still capable of predicting some of his actions. The vampire turned around, leaning his shoulders against the door as he looked at his brother. ”She’s doing better now. She was kind of messed up at first though, but I talked to her and..”, He paused for a brief second. He had no idea how he had managed to fix that, but he had. ”She still has your back, Kaz”, He finished his sentence. ”I told her to go to sleep, but I want to bet she is running around the castle taking care of whatever I missed as we speak”, He chuckled softly. She just couldn’t sit still, he knew from experience.

Carefully he listened, absorbing every word Mort said to him. She was doing better, she was mssed up but she was doing better. He messed her up, he had done all of it. If he hadn't gone back to the castle, this all wouldn't have happened. he should have waited with returning, he should have healed up and instead tried to fix himself before he would look her in the eyes again. She didn't deserve him and she defintely didn't deserve to be a mess because of him.

Kaz nodded, finally turning around yet still avoiding his brothers gaze. A very faint grin could be seen on his lips when Mort told him that she was probably running around the castle again. ''She wouldn't be the only one if my leg was back at fucking square one.'' The vampire grumbled as he limped towards the table with the wine again, refilling his glass. With every step it felt like the stake pierced through his skin again and again. But he ignored it, instead concentrating on the wine in his hand. She still had his back, she still cared and she still worried. She shouldn't, like he had told her. But just like him, Allison never listened. Kaz hesistated before speaking again. ''I'm sorry for all the harm I have caused.'' He spoke, as if it was suddenly all his fault, as if he had just walked up to the woman and asked her to torture him. As if he deserved it.

The fact that he still showed interest in her wellbeing, proved to him he had been right to have faith in him. He had promised her he would eventually be able to love her again. Either as the man he was or the man he would become. Of course he didn’t expect it all to go this smoothly, but it was a start. From this point, they could only made progress. Kaz would put himself back together, with their support. Whoever he turned out to be, they would both love him unconditionally. Hopefully his brother realised that. How he could push them away all he wanted, but it would be to no avail. They would always return to him because he deserved to be loved.

His words made him remember it wasn’t all that good yet. He was still in physical pain. He had no idea what Isabella had done to him, though he could see she had indeed fucked up his leg badly. Before he could comment on it though, Kaz decided to apologise. The older vampire immediately shook his head. ”It’s not your fault, at all”, He replied. If anyone was to blame, it was him. If he had given the other fledgling the location of their sire, he wouldn’t have been kidnapped and he wouldn’t have been tortured.
