WHAT IS DEAD
may never die

The world revolved around coin. So did his life. All he ever did, was related to gold. Gaining as much as possible, paying off debts, plundering some more, offering it to his God.. The list was endless. For now though, the task he was trusted with, didn’t involve any of his personal business. It was more of a favour. Normally Romeo didn’t do favours, but this was.. Different. So he had agreed, eventually. The Captain was making his way to Seere, to collect a debt for his friend. The description he had gotten, was pretty vague. A white-haired woman, slender build, scarcely clothed. If he didn’t know any better, that description would fit Allison Lenier. Though his friend had assured him his target was not the new Grand Duchess of Brightwater Keep.

Finding this woman wouldn’t be that hard, right? How many people would fit that description? Apparently, at least two. Bright amber eyes were focussed on his target, though he didn’t realise he had turned his attention to the wrong one. He was now following the blonde he assumed was his target through the filthy streets of Seere. She seemed to be pretty familiar with these back alleys, so unfortunately she had the advantage here. Romeo decided to take his chance, before she disappeared. The man caught up with her and blocked her passage. ”I need a word with you”, He said, with a somewhat angry buzz in his tone that gave away he wouldn’t accept any protest from her side.

Don't bless me father for I have sinned

Sareth had been comfortably playing mouse for some time now. About a block ago, she had noticed a presence following her. Naturally, she had strayed from the main streets and was now moving through the back alleys – not just because she knew her way here, but more so to check whether it wasn’t just the (perfectly understandable substance abuse-induced) paranoia that told her she was being followed. She had only looked at the cat from the corner of her eye, and hadn’t really seen him but for once, but she felt the eyes locking on her after every turn she made.

Leading him to the library would be straight up dumb. So naturally, this was where Sareth was headed. Of course, she didn’t know what he wanted from her, but knowing Seere, and knowing men – one could surely wonder whether her experiences had something to do with bad taste and timing – whatever he needed from her she could either survive, subvert, or willingly supply. If he was truly planning on following her home, he was welcome to enter yet another place in which she knew her way around. However, something told her that he would intercept her before she had reached her destination.

And indeed, after she slipped into yet another alley, she saw him turn around the corner, closer this time. Even though she had expected it, her heart started beating faster.

Perhaps now was the time to start worrying. Any normal human being, any half rational person would, at this point, start to panic, or at least prepare. Sareth did neither. In all honesty, the racing of her heart had more to do with a certain kind of excitement, a certain thrill that she could only experience when her life was potentially in danger.

No one ever said Sareth was sane.

At last he caught up and cornered her.

“I need a word with you,” he growled.

Sareth looked up to the face that had spoken, and met a pair of bright amber eyes, staring down at her with a stern, almost angry look, framed by several tattoos. Being Sareth, she couldn’t help but grant him her most welcoming, Sarethesque smile.

Her eyes remained fixed on his as she raised her hand to touch his arm.

“You can have more than a word from me, honey.” Her voice was soft and slightly husky as always.

As she spoke, her other hand carefully moved between the folds of her skirt to reach for the one of the blades hidden there, if the situation were to call for action.

“How can I help you?”

WHAT IS DEAD
may never die

Following her would have been a lot easier if they had been in an environment he was familiar with. This was not the first time he had been sent out to collect a debt. Mostly, the target were men though. It was, however, none of his business how they had gotten themselves in this mess. He was merely a messenger, one that was allowed to use force if needed to achieve his goal. At least he wasn’t instructed to get rid of her once the debt had been paid. If a discussion would follow, he wasn’t quite sure if he would be able to stop that from happening though. He wasn’t the most patient person on this planet, after all.

Which proved to be true when he was quite frankly done with following her around like a lost puppy. There were a lot of factors that weren’t within the boundaries of his control and it annoyed him. It was time to change that, shift the control back to him. Before she managed to get away somehow. At least she had been leading him through less crowded streets for a while now. Though he wondered how many people would actually care and intervene if they had done this on the main streets. With a slightly impatient and angry tone, which was pretty standard for him nowadays, he called her to a halt.

A warm smile graced her lips, as some type of greeting. She was either completely unaware of the reason he had been following her, or she was pretending she didn’t know. Whatever it was, she wouldn’t talk herself out of this. He was smarter than to fall for any trickery. Years of experience on the streets had made him observant, perhaps on the border of paranoid as well. When her hand had touched his arm, his muscles had tensed, not all too happy with the sudden and unprovoked touch.

It didn’t distract him enough to miss the fact that her other hand was reaching between the folds of her clothing though. A mistake he had witnessed a thousand times now. So careless. What was the point of hiding a blade if she would give away the presence and hiding place right away? There was only one reason he would ever reach for his, and it was at the moment he would decide to use it. ”First of all you can let go of that knife”, He commanded her with a warning in his voice. He fixed her with his amber gaze, a slight frown appearing around his brows.

”Second, you can stop pretending you’re unaware of the reason a stranger would follow you through these damned streets”, He continued, pulling away his arm now, to break the contact she had established. ”It’s time to pay your debts”, He continued, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. There was nowhere for her to run at this point. If she decided to try and fight her way past him, he would gladly react appropriately to her actions. The smartest thing for her to do, was pay up. Or she might not walk away from this unharmed.

As her hand touched his arm, she felt his muscles tense up, and couldn’t help but think, for a second, that maybe her being followed by him wasn’t too bad after all. Of course, this was only for a second, and as he started speaking, her smile faded.

“First of all, you can let go of that knife.”

His eyes met hers and she, too, tensed up. Briefly, she was unable to move.

“Second, you can stop pretending you’re unaware of the reason a stranger would follow you through these damned streets,” he continued, before pulling his arm from her fingers. “It’s time to pay your debts.”

At this point, Sareth raised a brow. One has to understand that Sareth typically didn’t do ‘debts.’ She had figured a long time ago that business went down a lot smoother if there wasn’t anybody left to pay her debts to. Plus, all she usually did was stealing – some of the ones she stole from might not have known that back then, but that did not matter much – and as she saw it, the concept of ‘debts’ only came into the picture when one loans something from another. A thief cannot owe you anything. And Sareth didn’t borrow, she took.

After she regained herself, she gave a short laugh and shook her head. She then raised the hand that had reached for her knife and opened it to him calmly, wondering whether he was stupid enough to think that she wouldn’t have six other places on her body to hide weapons.

“First of all, honey,” she mimicked him, “I can think of at least ninety-nine reasons a handsome stranger would follow me around in ‘these damned streets’ and me having to pay my debts isn’t one of them.”

The smirk around his face slightly irritated her.

“And second, I have never even met you – and believe me, if I had, I would have remembered. Tell me, how is it I can owe you anything if I have never seen your face?”

WHAT IS DEAD
may never die

This chick was already annoying him. Testing his patience and pushing his boundaries. She had no idea what kind of limits he had though, he would give her that, but who in their right mind just touched a stranger like that? After that same stranger had been stalking for a while? Especially in a situation like this he would expect her to keep some distance from him. It was pretty obvious he wasn’t here with the best of intentions. Or she was just really naive. The man decided it was time to break the news to her and explain the reason why he had stopped her.

It only confused her. Or she wanted him to think it confused her. Romeo didn’t buy it. After years and years of manipulating and lying he knew not to trust anyone, as it was too easy to play mind games like that. With a bit of practise the possibilities were endless. When she verbally reacted, he kept a close eye on her non-verbal communication as well. Trying to find a flaw in her deceptions. Catching her red-handed with a lie.

”That’s because you haven’t. The debt you owe is not mine to keep. I’m merely here to collect it”, He said, slightly impatient. If she wanted to keep him occupied so she could find a way out, he wouldn’t allow her. ”I will ask you nicely once more. Pay up”, He grumbled, the tone in his voice contradicting the words he spoke. If she refused again, she would face the consequences soon enough.

As she spoke, she felt his eyes registering every single move she made. She couldn’t deny that it made her nervous, but as with all emotions she was uncomfortable with, she turned it into an open, inviting and - partly fabricated - dominant air and responded to his gaze with a confident smile, as if he was doing nothing more than checking her out.

But he wasn’t checking her out, and he got back to business as soon as she stopped talking.

“That’s because you haven’t. The debt you owe is not mine to keep, I’m merely here to collect it.” His voice grew darker as he spoke. “I will ask you nicely once more. Pay up.”

Sareth took a step back and took a deep breath as she looked him up and down, almost as if she were deciding whether he was even worth the trouble talking to. As if she was in a position to choose whether or not to talk to him at all.

“Listen, I don’t do debts. I am terribly sorry for whomever lost their money - apparently quite a sum of it, if they send you after it - but you have the wrong person in front of you.”

She was fully aware of the fact that she was entering very dangerous waters right now, but she couldn’t stop herself from speaking the way she did. Besides, every word that came out of her mouth was true. That in itself didn’t happen very often. It was almost a shame that she was out here, being completely honest in front of a guy who definitely wasn’t going to believe her any time soon. Such a waste.

“Now, if I could have been of service to you, believe me, I would have, but it appears to me that someone made a mistake and I do not intend to be the victim of that. Maybe if you drop this act and tell me who it is you’re collecting debts for, I can help you.”

Her words were followed by a completely out of place wink.
