An ember in the ashes

Miss Missing You
With a stretch and a yawn, Rhysand's body announced that it was done for today. With the winter in full swing the sun set way earlier and it was still hard for him to get used to. The dark, cold nights reminded him of his younger years, where he searched every corner, every nook for a piece of wood or anything other that was flammable, to make sure his sister and him would not freeze to death. Sometimes he had been barefooted, giving up his shoes so that Nesta's feet would be warm. Although some winters had been soft, Rhysand knew the harsher ones far better. He remembered the faithful night a week after his mothers passing. Their father was in the tavern, wasting the last money they had on drinks, while they huddled around a candle, hoping to get a grip of the tiny warmth it gave them. He was surprised he had woken up the next morning and that every limb on his body was still intact. From that night on, he searched the streets for anything that would burn so that they never had to almost freeze to death ever again.
And now? Now he warmed his feet near a fire. He had a roof over his head, food and mead in his belly and it seemed those days of freezing on the streets had been long gone. But Rhysand remembered. And he would never forget. His sword stood near the fireplace, the flames reflecting on the metal. He himself stared into the fire, thinking about his earlier years. For some reason the winter had always had a firm grasp on him when he came around. He noticed himself growing more distant, trying to keep himself busy. Because when he wasn't this would happen. The thoughts, the memories, it flooded his mind, overtaking him. The young man sighed and got up. He needed a drink.
The tavern wasn't far from his home but with this cold, it felt like the route took ages. When he finally entered the building he noticed he had not been the only one who wanted to warm his body with a drink. He found a place somewhere in a corner, not far from the fireplace, but far enough not to be melted by its heat. He smiled and nodded at a few familiar faces and ordered a drink. Sitting down, he played with the mug in his hands, looking around and taking in all the sounds and laughter. He wasn't sure how this drink was going to solve his overthinking problem, but he knew that if he drank enough, he knew that he wouldn't have to worry about it tomorrow.

His past was simple and complicated at the same time. At first it was all a happy family with the normal kind of problems and then there was a big fire and his brother Lucien and Tamlin himself had become orphans. Lucky for them they had lived in the castle and were good at their fighting lessons. If they had not had potential to become great knights, of even better, men of the King’s Guard, they might have been casted out to an orphanage to grow poor. Well, that hadn’t happened, luckily for them.
Losing his parents had made Tamlin a vengeful, hot-tempered man. And he avoided the thoughts as much as he could. It would not bring anything good to think about all those happenings. And yes, there it was. Tamlin was sitting in his chair and the memories flashed through his mind. Especially how he had wounded his dear brother, Lucien. The eye he had lost. Tamlin clenched his teeth and decided that he had to do whatever he could to get rid of those memories. So, he left his room.
His body was always warm and hot, always full of energy. That could be because of the lion which crawled underneath his skin. Cooling down in this winter night was helpful. The cold slammed against his body and he felt better, immediately. That’s when he decided to go to the tavern. You see, a drink was a cure for bad memories.
Entering the tavern, he heard that it was quite crowded. Well, that was not what he had wanted, until he saw a most familiar face between all those other familiar faces. Rhysand, his buddy. So, he closed the door behind him and walked toward the bar to order a whisky. Well, Tamlin wasn’t much of a drinker, usually, but now he just needed something strong. With his whisky he walked over to Rhysand. "You too needed to clear you mind?" He said, grinning as he sat down, releasing a sigh. Rhysand was his buddy, but also some kind of rival. It was complicated, but nothing was normal in his life, so Tamlin was completely ok with it.

He knew that after a while, the sounds of the tavern would start to bother him. It would become too noisy, he wouldn't be able to concentrate anymore. But none of that would happen if he just drank. And so he did. He was already halfway when a familiar voice drowned out all the other noise around him. Rhys smiled, leaning a bit forward to fistbump his friend. ''It seems to get more common these days.'' He replied, still smiling. His eyes went to the drink in Tamlins hand and he cocked an eyebrow. ''Though it seems you need it more than me.'' to which he laughed and sipped from his own mug. They had known each other for years, yet for Rhys it always seemed that Tamlin was better one of them. Tamlin had everything while Rhys had nothing. And it bugged him, even more, it irritated him. But he hid it, just like he hid everything else that was to know about his life.
His eyes wandered the crowded room, falling on some familiar faces he rather wished to avoid right now. But the drinks demanded to be drunk and his thoughts demanded to be washed away. So he ignored them, and they ignored him. Simple as that. And now, with Tamlin joining him at the table, this evening could get a little more of a positive outlook and maybe not look like he was trying to hide he was an alcoholic. He would never turn into something his father was. And if he would, he would end it himself.

Tamlin wans’t an alcoholic. He never drank much and when he did, he didn’t much to achieve, whatever he wanted to achieve with drinking. This glass of whisky would be enough with a beer after. He would keep it with that. Tamlin remembered when he had almost gotten drunk in the King’s Room. That was rather embarrassing, especially the day afterward, because he remembered. Luckily it hadn’t bothered the King at all.
Tamlin approached Rhysand and figured that he was here too, to clear his mind. He grinned at his buddy and Rhysand leaned forward to fist-bump, which Tamlin, of course returnedbro. Tamlin chuckled at the words of Rhysand. “Better not become an alcoholic, friend,” he said and arched an eyebrow. “Though, at times it is certainly not wrong,” he continued with a grin and raised his glass. Rhysand glanced at his glass and cocked an eyebrow. The comment Rhysand then placed made him grin once more. “Well, I just want my mind to be cleared as fast as possible,” Tamlin said and took a sip of his whisky. He wanted to forget his memory for an evening. He didn’t feel like breaking stuff again, since he wasn’t the type who could handle with bad feelings. The two of them had known each other for a long time. Rhysand might know Tamlin quite good, and the way he handled with things. Tamlin figured that Rhysand himself was quite a mystery. He came from the lower folk, lived a poor life, had a sister (rather beautiful) and well, that’s it? What Tamlin had figured out was that Rhysand could be quite tense. “So, have you got any stories to tell?” Tamlin said, taking another sip of his whisky. The warmth of the alcoholic liquid sliced down his throat, a good feeling.

Alcoholism had always been a rather tense subject for him, but when it was spoken of, Rhysand chose to ignore his feelings and just went with it. Everyone in this city knew someone who liked to drink a little too much, so why would he be such an ass and cry about it. ''Do not worry about me, I know perfectly well how to hold my liquor.'' He grinned. If he just kept reminding himself he would end up like his father, everything would be okay. And he did that, a lot. One could almost say it looked like a weird obsession. Like a dog refusing to get the traits of his master. Rhys leaned back in his chair, playing with his glass and looking at Tamlin instead of the rest of the tavern, which he had been doing the past minute.
''If you want it cleared as soon as possible, why not drink it whole now?'' It sounded like a challenge. And maybe it was. If Tamlin would accept it, Rhysand would gladly join, no one lets a friend drink alone, right? Tamlin's question made him shrug, twirling the glass between his fingers. ''The usual banter and royal problems.'' He didn't mention he almost walked straight into the king the other day, because that would probably be for the best. ''I never really understood all you royal people and your.. royal problems.'' The comment wasn't meant to be harsh, in fact, he said it more in a goofy way, more trying to poke a little fun at Tamlin than actually being rude.

If a feline was good at anything, it would be noticing. Besides vengeful and hot-tempered, you could describe Tamlin as an observer, a noticer. Of course, Tamlin did not notice everything, but he noticed a lot, saw a lot and that was a good trait. He could make good use out of it and he absolutely did so. So, it wasn’t that hard for Tamlin to notice that alcohol seemed to be some kind of tense subject on Rhysand, but he wasn’t sure, since the man did drink alcohol at times. Just like now. “I’m sure you do,” was therefore his reaction to what Rhysand had said. Tamlin sat back and stretched his legs, taking another sip of his whisky, enjoying the full taste of it. Slowly the warmth of the alcohol began to fill his head, make him fill relaxed.
And then he roared a laugh at the words of Rhysand, leaning forward and looking with disbelief in the eyes of the man in front of him. “Do you even know what you’re saying right now?” He replied with astonishment dripping off his words. But the challenge in the words of Rhysand weren’t spoken unnoticed. Whisky had to be enjoyed, it’s full rich taste and everything. Of course, Tamlin wasn’t completely serious. He raised his glass one more time, looking right into the eyes of his friend and swallowed the whiskey in one shot. The alcoholic liquid was almost too much for him, but he managed not to cough, or something. Then he returned a challenging gaze. “Your turn, buddy,” he challenged him.
Rhysand told him that it were the usual royal problems which troubled him. Tamlin didn’t believe, but he was not entirely in the mood to question him. Then he scoffed at the following words Rhysand had spoken. “My royal people, my royal problems,” he laughed while repeating Rhysand's words. It was so much more and he knew Rhysand was joking. At least, most specifically. “Heres to royal stress,” he then said, a bit mockingly.

Miss Missing You
After a days hard work it was nice to wind down like this. Just two friends, enjoying their drinks in a tavern where no one bat an eye at them. Nobody cared that they were actually King's Guard. They were off duty anyway, getting drunk, so why would anyone fear them? It bothered him sometimes. How a rank determined if he was to be looked up to or not. But there was nothing to do about it, he just had to simply wait and sit his turn until an opportunity came around and he could get higher up the ladder.
Rhys grinned at his friends laugh, raising an eyebrow when he was looked at in disbelief. ''By the looks of your face, probably not.'' Rhys answered his friends question. Was it so hard to just down a drink like that? He wouldn't really know since he never really drank any heavy stuff, but by the look of his friend, it didn't seem common to do so. Nonetheless, he laughed, looking surprised at Tamlin when the latter did actually finish his drink in one go. ''Some serious stuff must have happened today for you to actually accept one of my challenges.'' Rhysand now laughed, raising his glass before he too, drank it all away. The warm taste of alcohol was a welcome feeling. A bit harshly Rhys dropped the mug on the table again. His eyes were cocky, daring Tamlin to do it again. ''To Royal Stress!'' Rhysand laughed before turning to a barmaid and ordering two more drinks. If they wanted to forget tonight, there definitely should be more booze involved. After ordering Rhys turned to his friend again. ''What about you? What royal problems have you overheard?'' He smiled, relaxing a little more.

Tamlin liked it when people looked up at him. He liked having a high rank and being able to scare people. He was the King’s Guard and people better watched out. Even of duty, he was on duty, even when he was drunk. He would always keep his senses on sharp, well, as far as possible, since he was getting drunk now. Tamlin was determined to climb that ladder as high as possible. He had set his eyes on becoming The Lord Commander of the King’s Guard, or something else, which was powerful. He had a plus point, which was King Thriumph, who seemed to kind of trust him.
His roaring laugh softened when he had spoken, but he laughed again when Rhysand gave him an reaction. But he wasn’t going to enjoy his whisky, no, he was going to swallow it in one shot. And that was his answer on the ‘by the look of your face’ comment. Then Rhysand began about the serious stuff that must have happened. Tamlin wasn’t going to answer to that, so his comment was; “You know I love challenges, Rhys,” his voice a bit hoarse because of his whisky shot. He smirked when Rhysand raised his own glass and finished it. When he cheered Tamlin laughed again. Oh, he was enjoying this. Before Tamlin got the change to order new drinks, Rhysand had already one so. He grinned and sighed when Rhysand asked the question. “You might say that the royal past follows me at times, and then there are the rumors I’ve got to keep my senses for on sharp, you know, about his throne,” his voice was soft when he spoke, especially when he spoke about the throne of Thirumph. He left out his name on purpose. There were people who threatened the position of the King, there was Aeron, the man who was responsible for the dead of his parents and all the other threats. “What about you?”

He wondered what Nesta would be doing right now. Would she wonder where he was? He hadn't said anything to her when he left. But he wasn't that kind of person, he just simply left in silence, making sure he wasn't bothering someone else. He always had had that feeling of bothering people, even when it appeared not to be. He could never trust his head, let alone his instincts. But, before he could dwell on those thoughts, the drinks arrived. Rhysand smiled at the girl and grabbed his glass, inspecting it at first as if he could not believe it was an actual, alcoholic drink. But then everything seemed fine and he took a sip, his pale blue eyes meeting Tamlin's. ''You were always very amibtious.'' Rhys said with a sly smile, twirling the glass in his hands.
For a moment, Rhys' face darkened. He never really knew what to think of the king. He highly respected him and as a member of the King's Guard, knew where his loyalties were, but that was it. He had no idea what kind of person Thriumph was. Maybe it was for the best, for now. ''Maybe it's best to avoid that topic for tonight.'' He said with a more serious tone, taking a sip from his drink and avoiding Tamlins question with a shrug. Nothing really had happened. He had patrolled the gardens and because of the cold, there was nothing special. He shifted a bit in his chair before crossing his legs. ''Do you have duty later tomorrow?'' He asked, inspecting his shoes as if they seemed to be very dirty, which they were not and the room was so dimly lit, Rhys wouldn't even be able to see anyway. After, what would probably be too long, looking at the soles of his shoes, he looked at Tamlin again. Rhysands cheeks were a little rosy, perhaps he couldn't hold his liquor as good as he thought he could. But this night was about getting drunk anyway.

The drinks arrived and Tamlin smiled broadly. He loved strong drinks, especially whisky. Good whisky was probably brewed in Valyria of Rhoynar. Tamlin returned Rhysand’s sly smile when he said that Tamlin had always been ambitious, because he was right and Tamlin wasn’t ashamed of it. There was nothing wrong with being ambitious. Even before the dead of his parents, Tamlin had been a ambitious kid, wanting to win every romp and other games. He didn’t reply in words, though.
Then Tamlin noticed how Rhysand’s face had darkened a bit. Tamlin had brought up the subject about the king. And when Rhysand replied to that he nodded in agreement. It was better not to talk about Thriumph. Tamlin followed his example in taking a sip of his drink. Rhysand shrugged of his question and Tamlin narrowed his eyes. Oh, alright, he wasn’t going to obligate him in answering his question.
Rhysand crossed his legs and then asked a question about duty. “Nothing special for me tomorrow,” he answered. Though, he wondered when he wasn’t on duty. He was always keeping his senses as sharp as possible. Even now, if something suspicious got his attention, he would focus on that. King Thriumph would appreciate it, he knew that. And like Rhysand had said, he was an ambitious man. “But I guess duty shouldn’t be the subject of tonight either,” he said. “What about…” he thought, not really knowing what to say. “Love?” He gave him a daring look. He wasn’t going to say women, since Tamin’s love interests were for both sexes, though, he seemed to prefer women over man, most of the times. He did not even really know if there was a man which he saw as a potential one. But he knew that he could fall for a male. But considering, Tamlin was the dominant, it was mostly female. But then, the blonde young man liked a challenge too. He wondered what Rhysand had to say to this subject. The alcohol started kicking in and, to be honest, he was interested in his love life. But then he noticed how Rhysand had been staring to his shoe soles for quite a long time. Also his cheeks were being flushed up. "Is it interesting?" He asked with a chuckle.

Miss Missing You
Drinking had never been Rhysand's stronger thing. He always seemed to think he could have a drink or five before actually feeling anything, but it came way, way quicker. Sometimes he detested himself for it, thinking he was weak, just like his father. Other times he didn't mind. If he just wanted to relax a little or have a good night's rest, he knew he just could grab a drink or two and there would be nothing to worry about. Still, whenever he sipped his drink, his mind went back to his younger days, to his father, although that image seemed to blur more and more the more he drank. And so he kept drinking.
It felt like it was hard to pick a subject to talk about tonight. Strange, since it was known to many that when you drank, you would talk more. Yet, Rhysand couldn't find anything he really wanted to say. He nodded at Tamlin's words and took a rather large gulp of his drink. For it to almost immediately spit it out again. He leaned forward, coughing a bit and trying to get himself under control again. ''Next time, warn me.'' he said, still a bit shocked about his own reaction. His cheeks flushed red when Tamlin asked about his shoes. He scratched himself behind his ear before he, relucantly, answered. ''There isn't really... anyone I can think of to love. Besides Nesta. But that's just family.'' He smiled, taking a sip so he wouldn't have to look at Tamlin. ''Although, I saw quite a fair maiden the other day, walking around the streets.'' He then lied before giving Tamlin a soft kick against his boot. ''What about you, hm? I bet there would be a line to pet you.'' Rhys said, smirking before leaning back again, hoping his rosy cheeks were just from the alcohol.
Maybe Tamlin drank a bit more alcohol than he used to do, it was probably an age thing. The older you get, the more you drink. But then, he was only twenty-two years old, that perhaps explained why he couldn’t handle that much alcohol. And that possibly explained why he already felt the alcohol reaching his head, making him feel a bit blurry and swoony. As long as he stayed fit, he didn’t mind drinking alcohol now and then. The next day he would be up again, ready for a run, keeping his condition high, though muscle training and fighting training and practicing. Maybe Rhysand would join him the next day and he could see if Lucien was in for it too.
Picking a subject for tonight seemed rather hard. Most subjects were kind of dark, so Tamlin started thinking about a subject which wouldn’t be that dark. Couldn’t be that dark. Maybe love? Ah, why not. He had suggested it already, before he could think about it any longer. Tamlin took a sup of his drink and Rhysand almost spitted his own out by his suggestion to talk about love. He swallowed his gulp of alcohol and laughed at the reaction of his friend. “Why should I? surprises are fun, aren’t they?” He laughed. But then he noticed how Rhysand had been staring at his shoe sole. Why would he do that? It made him chuckle. Rhysand was probably already taken by the influence of alcohol. Just like Tamlin himself, why would he otherwise begin about something cheesy like love? Rhysand scratched behind his ear and began to talk, with flushed cheeks. Tamlin just sat back, watching him while he listened. Of course there was no-one and he began about his sister. “No incest involved I hope?” He just said it, jokingly. And then he began about a fair maiden. “Oh? You just saw her walk or?” He moved his dark blonde eye brows and winked. “Sorry, you haven’t said enough about your own love interests, you never say much, so…” he chuckled. Yes, this time Rhysand wasn’t going to escape the subject that easily. A group of halflings entered the tavern with instruments. Good, some music to brighten up the ambiance. Tamlin grinned and stared at his friend. “What’s your type?” And he took another full sip of his drink. He was almost ready for a new glass, so he beckoned the maid and ordered two more whisky’s. She just narrowed her eyes and obeyed, just as she was supposed to do.

Miss Missing You
Maybe next time he shouldn't focus so much on the fact that his father was an alcoholic and that he had to watch out with his own liquor. Maybe he just should enjoy it. That would be a hard thing for him to do, because since when did Rhysand LaFae enjoy things? When wasn't he that cold, distant person or the nice guy who hid all his problems and issues behind lies and fake smiles? When he was alone for sure, but even then he was scared someone would notice, someone would know. He never really felt safe, but that was partly because of what turmoiled inside him. His magic which he couldn't let out whenever he wanted. He always had to walk on his toes and be careful. Even Nesta didn't know.
Even though Tamlin's question came out of nowhere and he wasn't prepared, he grinned. ''Just like challenges?'' He said with a raised eyebrow, pushing his now empty mug away from him. Tamlin had already ordered more drinks, so he better kept on drinking then. A little worried he glanced at his friend, noticing the light tone in his voice and shaking his head sheepishly. Twisting his thumbs, he looked at the halflings joining the tavern and enlighting them with their music. Rhysand shrugged again. He appeared to be good at that. ''It was near the market, she had her hands full and I would've helped if I wasn't on patrol.'' He continued his lie, hoping Tamlin would fall for it. They were halfway drunk anyway. ''I don't know man, it's hard to focus on those things when I feel like I'm married to my work.'' He joked, thinking Tamlin would probably understand and, hopefully, talk about another subject. Probably not, but it was worth a try.

It probably was the cold darkness in Rhysand which made Tamlin like him. Just like Tamlin liked the King, who was rather cold and dark too. What about Tamlin himself? He was just a wild cat with aggression problems. He wasn’t necessarily cold or dark, he was just kind of violent with a grudge toward his past, toward Aeron Medici. And yes, he liked, loved fighting, had a obsession with training, getting better and getting stronger. But that was it, he was neither dark nor cold. Though, he could be at times, but it didn’t define him. And there was more about Rhysand, more than just his coldness and darkness, but what it was? Tamlin didn’t know, though, he wanted to. But then, would it be good to know?
“Just like challenges,” Tamlin repeated as an answer. He finished his own glass and put it away. He was completely under the influence of alcohol now, though he wasn’t drunk yet. More like tipsy. He felt loosely and swoony and it felt awesome. Now he was waiting for his new drink. The halflings had entered the tavern with their music, brightening up the atmosphere, making it all more comfortable. Rhysand started telling about the fair maiden. “Oh you’re such a gentleman,” he replied, grinning sheepishly. Tamlin didn’t entirely believe it, but neither was he going to question it. “And when you look around, enough women here,” there were enough women here. Some were even selling themselves. Tamlin would never go with a whore. Because that was who they are, whores, though they called themselves fancy ladies. “Or men.” Now Tamlin was staring a bit challenging toward his friend, wondering what that would do with him. Tamlin could fall for both, as long as they were able to handle him. And Tamlin guessed that no one was able to handle him. Tamlin felt how the alcohol made him feel like teasing his friend, making him uncomfortable and challenge him. Let’s see how far he could get.

Miss Missing You
While drinking his mind always went adrift. It was harder to concentrate on the now and what was actually happening. So, his mind did wander off, to the market place where he had met this so called women he had supposedly met. What if this wasn't just a figment of his imagination? Sure, there were plenty of days that he walked around and felt an attraction to a certain someone, but he never made the step. He never said hi, stroke up a conversation or tried getting to know her or him. Something held him back, it had always been like that. Rhys didn't have many friends, but he was loyal to the ones he had. Until a better oppertunity came by and he dropped all his morals to grab it with both hands. But nobody knew that about him. Yet. From the marketplace he wandered to Tamlin, the golden haired man who seemed to have everything Rhysand desired. What would Lucien think of him? They never really met, only ocasionally said hi to each other. Rhysand bit his lip, trying to concentrate again on the now.
Tamlin seemed to look at him, a certain look in his eyes. Shit. What were they talking about again? Love? That was it right? Rhys frowned. It was obvious that he had missed something. ''..Huh.. what?'' He managed to say, trying to figure out what this whole conversation was about again. Oh by the gods, what if this made him look stupid or dumb? He should stop drinking. But he knew very well he wouldn't tonight. He was already half way, no way he could go back. ''If you like challenges so much,'' he came back on a subject they were talking about earlier, ''then I challenge you to see who drinks their whiskey the fastest.'' he finished saying just as their drinks arrived. Rhysand looked at him, cocky, handing him his glass. ''Well, what do you say?'' he grinned.
