Can’t go? Nonsense. You can do anything when you’re in business with Beometh Swavi. There must be something wrong then. Maybe it was fear. Maybe it was insecurity. Maybe it was on principle. But there just had to be some moronic reason why the man said he ‘can’t’ go. Beometh put on his listening-face and stroked his hand through his hair. Mid-hair, he stopped. He looked the man straight in the eyes. Exile. For some reason he deemed this actually dreadful. He had felt unwanted in his life. But he had never been banned. To him it meant: Not being allowed to exist, in some particular location. He continued the stroke through his hair. “Then I’ll have to make you legal again.” Why was Beometh going through all this trouble just to have this man do the job. Nobody knows. He probably doesn’t even know himself. He then crossed his arms and looked down for a few seconds. “Make sure you’re at Navarre’s border in four weeks exactly. At night. North-east to Sundarin. I’ll have everything ready for you.” He then reached out with his hand for a handshake. He hadn’t told his name yet. He hadn’t told him what the job was yet. He was more than aware of this fact. Let’s see what happens.

It felt like someone was pulling the rug from underneath him. It was a slap in the face to know that his excitement from last night had been misplaced. His banishment had managed to ruin his life once more, taking away his one shot at getting his life together again. Not that it showed. Sawyer’s face remained stoic, not showing any sign of defeat. He refused to go down while throwing a massive tantrum. His confession made the other man pause in the midst of stroking through his hair, and Sawyer threw his piercing gaze right back at him. His response made him slightly frown, however. The Navarran looked well-off, yes, but Sawyer wasn’t sure if he had the status to pull something like this off. Besides, his intentions were unclear. Why bother trying to get him to legally enter the country again? It was easier to just employ someone else. Sawyer refused to believe he was doing this out of the goodness of his heart, but maybe he simply liked a challenge. Sawyer lifted a curious eyebrow at the other man. “What will you have me do in Navarre?” he asked. Not that he minded too much. If the pay was good, he’d do almost anything.

Aha, look at that. One of the questions Beometh had yet to answer. It told him that the man in front of him was more interested in the work he had for him, than he was interested in his employer. Excellent. He took back his hand, and let it rest for now. “A management job. At one of my subsidiary companies. You’ll get a house. Your pay will depend on how well you do at your job.” Sounds clear enough right? For some reason he thought the man in front of him wouldn’t mind about the rest of it. And if he did, he could ask. But, if he would get all the answers, that’s unclear. “A man can only do so much by himself.” Beometh was very aware of his humanity. He dreaded the inadequacy of others, as well as his own. But alone, he would fail for sure. Arrogance breeds negligence. However, this was not the only reason he needed the man. It was something he was not able to admit to himself. Nor was he able to detect this feeling within him. He crossed his arms, and waited patiently for the other’s response. Come on, take the opportunity. You’ll be able to build up your life faster than you could imagine.

Desperate was a word he absolutely hated to describe himself with, but at this point, it would fit. Slowly but steadily, he’d grown so weary of having to steal from others to keep himself alive. Only four a couple of scraps he could live off for another day. Living wasn’t even an accurate word to describe whatever he was doing. It was meaningless survival, and Sawyer would give his life trying to get something more out of it. Now that the opportunity presented itself ever so clearly, he wasn’t going to slip through his fingers. The dark-haired man told him he would take on a managing job at his company, which sounded promising yet vague. He’d get a house. In Navarre. Sawyer noticed he was holding his breath. After the man stopped speaking, it was quiet for a few seconds before Sawyer nodded. “If you can assure my safe passage into Navarre, I’d be glad to take you up on the offer,” he then spoke. It would be a shame if he made his way to Navarre, only to be kicked out shortly again. Or worse, beheaded. He wasn’t sure what the man could do for him, but everything was better than this.

Breathtaking it was indeed. If Beometh had been another man, he’d be breathtaken by his own actions too. His eyes locked onto his, when he spoke again. “Do you remember what I said before?” He wasn’t the kind to repeat himself a lot. He hated it. But now would be an exception. It would be, given the nature of the conversation, hard to remember it all in one go. “If you do. Then I can start my preparations immediately. To my employees will come no harm.” So people better not have themselves fired. An image of the house his employee would live in, came to mind. The house was half as big as his own. But it was close to work, and had a nice little watermill on the side. Two stories high. Stop. This was not what he was supposed to be thinking about. He forbode himself to think about it. He was supposed to think about everything he would have to do to get the man legal again. He had an idea, and a general feeling of how long it would take. But to Beometh, it all felt more than possible. He almost felt something that could be categorized as ‘joy’. But that wasn’t it.

The man seemed awfully confident of himself. Since he was a complete stranger, Sawyer was somewhat hesitant to believe him, but once again, he didn’t have much of a choice. If this man truly wanted to make use of his services, he would need to find a way to get him into the country. Legally. An dit seemed like he wanted to, so there was a possiblity he would. The man didn’t seem eager to repeat himself, and Sawyer knew words weren’t going to make him any more sure of the fact that this man was capable of doing what he said he would. So he would just put a little bit of faith in him. “Consider the offer accepted, then,” he finally said. With those words, the hope of last night seemed to come back to him again. Maybe he would find an acceptable life across the borders of Navarre once again. “I’ll see you there in four weeks.” Travelling was no issue anymore, now that he had the money from the first job. He’d find a ship that would bring him up north, no problem. With a final nod, he turned around and walked off. It was time to turn his life around. For the better.
