Mercury knew this was stupid and the other would probably not even care, but he could still try, right? The scratches on his face weren't even that deep, but one was close to his eye and he rather avoided an infection. He could wait it out and hope his powers would heal him quickly, but that meant he had to rest. And Mercury just couldn't sit still. So, he hoped that his fellow guardian would for once not judge his actions and patch him up a little, before the younger vampire would venture out into the woods again.

And maybe, he could ask for a little bit more. Just a teeny tiny bit, but that would mean that Apollo had to shut his mouth. Not that the guardian had a lot to say. The evening ritual had been fulfilled and it had only taken him an hour to get back to the Commander. An hour to have fucked things up again. A soft knock at the door would be enough to alarm the other. ''Apollo, bro?'' He said, announcing it was him. Again. But this was real serious, like super serious. Like.. like he didn't get his head scratched by a cat this time. No, this time it had been a lynx. That would probably not make things better.

NE CHERCHEZ PLUS MON COEUR

Slightly worried and a bit annoyed, the Healer knelt down next to the bed in the corner of the room. Only three of them had fed that night, so he hadn’t been that busy patching up the bitewounds. Unfortunately, Minerva had not taken his advice of taking it easy on the young man laying in the bed. Again. Apollo would almost give up and not tell her to be calm anymore, but he knew it would get way worse if he didn’t. Where it was his duty to heal, he also knew it was his purpose to reassure the young man. He was quite upset. Just like all the others that ended up in front of the Warrior when she got hungry.

Finally the villager had fallen asleep. So now, he could focus on the more pleasant things in life. Like painting. Yes, that sounded like the ideal way to have some rest himself. Sadly, someone had other plans for him that night. He could smell it even before he heard the knock on his door and the familiar voice calling his name. The Healer suppressed a deep sigh. When he opened the door, Mercury was standing right outside of it, his face all bloody and messed up. ”Brother”, He greeted him, fairly neutral. ”I wish I could say I was happy to see you, but you are hurt again”, He continued. The other seemed to never come visit him just for fun.

Apollo did not seem pleased when he opened the door. But honestly, who was pleased to see Mercury? Out of all the guardians, Juno would probably like him the most. To the rest.. he was just an annoyance. And a bad one at that. The vampire smiled akwardly and held up his hand in a way of greeting the other. ''Sup.'' He spoke, shuffeling a bit with his feet. Yeah, this was awkward.

Just try to act cool, like nothing was wrong. While it was obvious something was wrong. Mercury leaned against the doorpost, still having that smile on his face. ''You busy? Because.. eh.. yeah..'' His voice died out while he scratched the back of his neck. By the Mother, this was indeed stupid. ''Can I ask for a favor?'' Again. But Mercury would be forever grateful, wasn't that something Apollo wanted? No, Apollo probably wanted him far away from him. Mercury couldn't blame him, but then again, he liked to be in his company. But that didn't seem to be the other way around.

Every time Mercury came knocking at his door, he had gotten himself in trouble. Of course he would never deny the other his help, but he wished he would be more careful. After all the times he had gotten himself hurt, Apollo expected for him to learn from his mistakes and be more careful. He didn’t mind that he got out there to explore. They all had their little things to keep themselves occupied and he would never tell the other what to do and what not to do. The Healer watched as his Brother acted as if nothing was going on at all. But he knew better.

”Why don’t you come inside first so I can take a look at your face”, He said, his voice a lot more friendly now. It was still his duty to take care of him. One that he took very seriously. He closed the door behind Mercury, taking him to his private room instead of the common one where he treated the villagers. He pointed at his bed, while taking a chair for himself. He inspected the wounds for a second. ”This was not a cat now, was it?” He asked, while his fingertips touched the skin carefully. Nothing a little magic couldn’t fix though.

He was invited inside. Great, step one of the plan was complete. Onto step two. It shouldn't be that hard, so far Apollo had always helped him out. He knew that the Commander probably wasn't happy with him, but Mercury couldn't help it. He just liked to get in trouble. Well, not really, but he couldn't help it. He attracted bad luck since he was born.

Mercury did as he was told, sitting down on the bed, the awkward smile still on his lips. ''I mean, I shouldn't come here everytime but yeah.. I thought, I was in the neighbourhood, so I thought.. why not?'' He tried to justify him turning up at the doorstep of the healer again. He let Apollo do his thing. ''It was a lynx I believe. It had his paw stuck in some plants, I was only trying to help.'' Again, he tried to explain that he had done it for a good cause, that he was indeed only trying to help. Not that it probably didn't matter, hopefully.

It always made him a bit sad to see Mercury hurt. He knew the younger Commander had been through a lot of pain in his life. He deserved better. The Healer had promised the Mother personally to take care of his younger brother. Keeping him safe was hard, the other seemed to attract trouble like a magnet. At least he could stop the suffering afterwards though. A task he would do with devotion for the rest of eternity. All while Mercury wasn’t aware of anything though. He was not ought to know about his pledge to Ceres.

While he was inspecting the wound, Mercury was blabbing on. As usual. When he was done talking, he met his gaze for a second. ”No, you’re wrong. You should come to me every time. I can help and I always will”, He told him, finally showing him a gentle smile. ”Now, don’t move”, He instructed him, while he placed his hand on the scratch closest to his eye. He could feel the warm sensation in his hands when his magic started working. When it was done, he moved on to the next cut, until his face looked perfectly fine again.

For some reason, Apollo didn't seem to care how much Mecury would pass by, asking him to patch him up. But it felt like it was wrong, but he just couldn't help it. He either was clumsy, or he got into a situation that he couldn't get easily out of, which resulted in occurences like this. The vampire met the gaze of Apollo and faintly smiled back. Of course he would. It wasn't like Diana would give a kiss on the wound and tell him it would be alright. She would probably start to scream that he was standing on one of her plants again.

The warmth of Apollo's magic always comforted him. Mercury closed his eyes and let the Healer do his job. ''I'm sorry. I'll try to watch out next time. I swear!'' He promised the other, though he knew it wasn't a promise he could easily keep. And how many times hadn't he said the same thing? When the Healer was done, Mercury opened his eyes again and smiled. ''You're the best. I promise I'll be safer next time! Wait, no, there won't be a next time. I'll watch out for sure now.'' The young one spoke with an affirmative nod, though he could already guess himself that he would be back in two days, if not earlier.

Out of all the Guardians, Mercury was his most frequent visitor. Aside from their training sessions, he didn’t have a lot of trouble with the others. When there was no war coming, they also didn’t train as much. So that meant he only had to take care of the villagers, and his little Brother. If they had to believe Minerva, war was always coming though. Sometimes it was annoying, but the Healer knew it was also important they had the Warrior among their ranks. She kept them ready, or at least alert. A perfect balance in their Command, just like the Mother wanted.

Eventually his face was all fixed up again. He started rambling about how next time he would be more careful. Then he added there wouldn’t be a next time. Apollo pulled up his brow, knowing the other had made that promise a thousand times before and would break it a thousand times again. Not even on purpose, at least not always. ”Did you want to ask me anything else?” He asked, remembering he wanted another favour of him tonight.

Mercury talked too much. He knew that, but did it stop him from talking? No, far from it. But most of the times, when he started talking he had already forgotten he talked too much which would result in him talking too much again. He wanted to beleive in his promises so badly, but even he could guess that he would break them one way or another. Especially when it was about him being careful. It wouldn't be surprising if he was back at sunrise with another scratch on his face.

Apollo was the kind of brother he had never had. And he seemed to be the complete opposite of him. The man cared for him, seemed to be okay with the fact that Mercury got banged up way too much. Sometimes the vampire thought there was something behind it, but then he remembered that Apollo was a lot older than him and probably would just not care anymore. ''No, not really, it was just this, I don't want to bother you or anything..'' He started another rambling session again, though in the back of his head he knew there was still that tiny worry. But he shouldn't bother people with that. They weren't a dump for his problems. He had to face them sooner or later.

Lately he had noticed how much Mercury was talking again. He knew it was a coping mechanism. Hide his feelings behind a smile and lots and lots of rants. Because almost all of the Guardians got tired of him in that way. They didn’t notice what was really going on. What the young one really wanted to tell them. But the Healer knew about his past. The Mother had warned him. By talking so much, he tried to prevent them from asking questions. Annoy them to the point where they would not care anymore. It worked on most of them. But not on him.

''No, not really, it was just this, I don't want to bother you or anything..'' He started going again. Apollo went quiet for just a second, choosing his words carefully. ”You know it is my purpose to heal, Mercury”, He said, stressing the word in a way the other would know what he meant. Hopefully. He didn’t want to push it any further though. It was an invite. An invite to talk, if he wanted to.

Mercury fell silent, staring at his hands. He always looked away when he tried to hide something, so it only became more obvious that he was trying to hide something. Eventually he sighed, deeply. Instead of trying to meet the gaze of the Healer, he looked at his shoes. Hm, maybe they needed some polishing.

It took some time before he finally dared to look up. His hands found a loose thread on his blouse, like that was the most important thing right now. ''But can you heal something that is inside my head?'' He dared to ask, his tone soft and insecure. Because honestly, Apollo couldn't really split his head open and see what was wrong. I mean, he could, but he probably wouldn't survive it.

His comment made the other go quiet. The Healer watched as he obviously struggled with himself, doubting if he would speak up or not. He gave him as much time as he needed. With matters like this there was no use in putting pressure on him. If he didn’t want to talk, that would be fine too. He could just feel an aching in his heart when he watched the young one hurt. Mentally, not physically. This he couldn’t fix with his magic. It would take much more effort. But he would try, that was for sure.

There it was. Quiet and uncertain. A soft sigh was audible from his side as he placed his hand upon Mercury’s knee. ”Unfortunately, I too have my limits”, He replied. How painful it was. Seeing his Brother and Sisters struggle with their mental health and him being unable to cure. Was he even worthy to be the Commander of Health? ”That doesn’t mean I won’t try”, He continued. The Mother wouldn’t want him to give up. Wouldn’t want them to give up. ”So what’s bothering you?” He asked, patiently waiting for the other to get his thoughts together and respond.

Of course Apollo had his limits. Had he truly expected the Healer to lay a hand on his head, mumble a few wise words and then tell him all would be fine? Not even Mercury was that stupid. He could imagine it, but it would be far from the truth. Even Apollo himself told him now. Limits, there were always limits. Oh, how Mercury despiced them.

When he felt the hand of his older brother on his knee, he looked him in the eyes. They were so much different than his own. Apollo's eyes were calm and stern, whereas Mercury's seemed to be wild and restless. Maybe that was his problem. ''..Does 'everything' count?'' He asked hesitantely with a sheepish smile before that smile disappeared. He knew Apollo couldn't do anything with that answer. So he sighed and tried again. ''It's hard to explain, it's just.. everything gets to me.'' Mercury let his eyes wander around. As far as he knew, Apollo knew nothing about what he had been and what had happened to him before he was brought here. ''I see them staring, I feel like they are talking behind my back. I..'' He finally seemed to have found the words. ''I feel like a disappointment.''

The only person who could truly make everyone happy, was the Mother. Her presence alone could calm all the demons haunting her Children. Not only the ones that tormented Minerva. They all had their demons to fight, some just more physical than others. He knew about those haunting Mercury too, and he wished he could keep him safe as well. He wished he could help them all, though he had his limits. He honestly told the other he would try his best, but he didn’t make any promises. He encouraged him to tell him what was bothering him, while giving him all the time to think about how he wanted to put it.

It took him a while, but eventually he came to a conclusion. ''I feel like a disappointment.'' Apollo dropped his gaze for a second. This would be harder than just using his magic to heal a superficial wound. So he had to be careful. This conversation could make or break the other Commander. ”Who do you feel holds you accountable for your actions and decisions?” He decided to ask. To who did he feel like he was a disappointment? Apollo had learned to be his own judge, and not let the criticism of others cloud his mind. He was older though, so it might be just his experience. Hopefully he could teach Mercury to do the same.

Sell your soul, not your whole self
The happy-go-lucky personality of the younger Commander seemed to have completely disappeared. Instead, he felt much closer to the boy he had been before all this, before his blessing. The insecure, scared boy who had been accused of being a demon and only brought misery onto the people. Minerva had told him he looked far from a demon, but what if she only told him that to make him feel better? It felt like doubt was gnawing at every edge of him.

Another sigh, another silence before Mercury finally spoke up. He didn't want to be this ball of sadness, he didn't deserve to be this sad. He had gotten a second chance and now he was wasting it away. ''The Mother.'' He finally said. It was hard to get those words over his lips. ''She gave me this second chance and.. it feels like I'm wasting it. I mean.. look at you. You heal people, you care for them, you have a purpose.'' The younger Commander sounded frustrated, which he was. '' And what do I do? I sit around, I watch stars and I waste the time I have. It doesn't feel right. I'm useless.'' Mercury clenched his teeth. Unbeknownst to him he had also clenched his hands, his nails digging into his flesh. But honestly, wasn't he speaking the truth? Wasn't he completely useless right now?
