You've gone and proved
to be the misery of mankind
All you ever do is make excuses, God you're boring. Use everything you've got inside, you still don't find the courage. Stick your tail between your legs and go. You think you know it all? You're just a king without a throne.
‘He’s here, ’ the whisper went. Slowly, the bringer of War looked over her shoulder. The shadow showed its perfect white teeth, his eyes filled with this… emotion. A mix between anger and excitement. He was ready to rip someone’s throat open and she knew it. “I know. The Commander is quite fond of him, ” she whispered to the demon. The demon laughed loudly, a sound only she could hear. She didn’t even remember the days where she feared that laugh anymore. By now she was used to it. It had become a part of her life, though it had taken her over a century to get used to.
Step, step. He seemed to be taking no effort in hiding himself, walking on the mountain path. He walked a level below her, on a safer pathway. Luckily, she had walked these roads a million times. She knew exactly where to stand and where not to. Plus, it was not like she would die from a fall. She followed him, walking on the level above him for a while, before she saw her chance. She took the step and made sure he’d hear her. Let’s test how quick the vampire was. With a swift move, she pulled out her sword and jumped down, ready to hit him straight in the back of the head if he didn’t run as quick as his vampire feet would carry him.

Honestly he had no idea what he was doing. Or why he was doing it. All he knew, was that he found himself walking the same path as he had done a few days earlier. Only now, he was alone. No Commander to protect him. There was something about the mountain, and the people that lived there, that was pulling him with such force that it was impossible to ignore. Of course he was scared. The Warrior was scary and he realised she probably knew a couple of ways to take him out if she wanted to. Nonetheless, he had told Lexa that he would be going back. Alone. He had questions, and there was only one person he could address them to.
The disturbing part was that he knew he couldn’t hear her coming. She had no heartbeat, no breathing. And he doubted that she would be stupid enough to give away her presence by taking a wrong step. So he only hoped she would give him a fair chance. If not, then he would be in trouble. Then again, when was he not? This time, he was prepared. His vampire senses were actively trying to pick up whatever. Now Lexa wasn’t here, he didn’t have to hold back because her heartbeat would be distracting. It was only because of that, that he heard a sound somewhere behind him. Instinctively, he leapt forward, ran for about three meters and then turned around. Perfectly still he focused vivid blue eyes on the Warrior. After that, he slightly bowed, only looking down for a second before looking back up. That one second could be enough for her to end it. But he hoped.. That she would hear him out first.

‘He’s quick, ’ Styx sounded, but Minerva clenched her teeth. Her blue eyes fixed on the vampire as he took a second to bow down. Slowly, she stood back up. “He’s not that quick, ” she said. While she looked at Mort, it was clear the words weren’t directed at him. No, she was talking to the demon behind her. A dark, slim creature with the brightest smile and the fiercest eyes. Also, invisible to Mort. A creature only she could see. She had spent centuries wondering if they were real, or if reality had been altered in her head. As time progressed, however, she had learned not to care. They were part of her reality. That was all that mattered.
“State your business, cursed one, ” she spoke. Her accent was clear. She didn’t quite sound like the people in Vanaheim did. While they spoke slightly different from those in other areas, they had a… less sharp tongue. The Warrior clearly spoke another language as well, using english only ever so rarely.

The quick whisper, mixed with the fact that she was speaking with a heavy accent, made him miss whatever she was saying. But he felt like it wasn’t directed at him anyway, even though she fixed him with the same gaze as earlier in the Temple. She seemed to pull him apart, inspecting every single piece of his being, to judge it and tear it down if needed. Not for one second he thought he was safe around her. If death had a face, it would be hers.
“State your business, cursed one,” She demanded, again with that accent he couldn’t quite place. Mort had thought this through on his way here. He knew that he would have to be careful with his choice of words. If he said something that displeased her, it would be -cue funeral march-. ”I came here for you to find me”, He said. Not the other way around, no. He would have never found her, not even if he had spent eternity here. ”I want to learn”, He continued. There it was. The goal of his little visit. If she said no, he would of course accept. And hope she would let him walk away again.

He came here for her to find him. Not the other way around. ‘A wise one indeed! ’ the creature hissed. Slightly annoyed, the Bringer of War looked behind her. “If you don’t shut up right now I’ll bring you back to hell, ” she hissed back. Every time she spoke to the creature, her words were quick and heavy of accent. Probably barely to not at all understandable for the young man. Not that she cared. He could hear all she had to say. He was no threat to her. She could rip his heart out and feed it to another vampire before he’d even be aware of what happened.
‘I want to learn.’ This made the warrior raise a brow. She sheathed her sword and raised her chin, looking at the man with raised brows and an unimpressed expression on her face. “What do you wish to learn? ” she asked. ‘You can’t teach a cursed one! ’ the whisper sounded. ‘He will bring darkness and darkness only! ’ it went on. She ignored it this time, keeping her eyes fixed on the vampire. What did he need?

Two minutes had passed and he was still alive. A bloody miracle. The Warrior was frightening, her presence alone made him feel uncomfortable. It was a feeling he hadn’t felt ever before. It was new and therefore, strangely, exciting. There was something about her that made him want to spend time with her. Soak in whatever she wanted to tell him. Just as he had spent his days with Edmund. The elder vampire seemed to possess the same aura of wisdom around him and in that way, it made him brave enough to actually ask the following question.
”I wish to know whatever the Commander couldn’t teach me”, He replied. He inhaled the fresh mountain air for a second, before slowly letting it go again. ”I want to understand. All of it”, He continued. Why he was so hellbent on it, was a mystery to him as well. He just found himself wondering constantly. There was more to it than Lexa had told him. And his curiosity had gotten the best of him.

The boy wished to learn. What he wanted to learn was not a surprise, yet it was. He wanted to understand what the Commander couldn’t teach him. Wanted to understand all of it. Slowly, the Warrior stepped forwards, her blue eyes shimmering in the light. “You want to learn about our people, boy? ” she asked. As she spoke a bit louder, her accent seemed to come out more clearly, giving that rough edge to her words that seemed to fit her quite well. “You will have to be more specific. There’s centuries of knowledge your Commander can’t tell you about, ” she told him. What was he after? All of it was a lot, would take a long time to explain. And then she hadn’t even decided if he was worth her time to begin with. Though she had a lot of time.
‘He’s a liar! ’ Cratos sounded. The Blessed One clenched her teeth together. ‘He’ll lead you all to darkness, Minerva! All of you! ’ Where Styx was annoying, Cratos made her feel like killing someone. Mort, for example. Killing a vampire was not as hard as people made it sound, after all. But, first she wanted to know what he had in mind. Why he wanted to know, was the next question. He had some trust to earn.

All the information Lexa had given him, perfectly fit together. In the eyes of a human, that was. For a vampire, there were certain things that were.. Off. She kept calling him the cursed one, yet they were of the same kind. Or did she live in a world where her condition was justified? The Children of Vanaheim hated vampires, yet their Guardians were exactly that. He also suspected the Mother was one too. It was all guesswork, but he kind of wanted to believe Ceres had sired these Guardians, the five of the Original Command.
“You want to learn about our people, boy?” The Warrior asked, sounding angry and impatient. Centuries of knowledge. Mort carefully weighed his options again. He decided to start of very simple. ”Who are you?” He asked her, bright blue eyes looking at her as if the answer was written on her face. Ready to hear her story. Or whatever she was willing to tell him.

‘Death, ’ Cratos whispered in her ear. She could feel his breath in her ear and she put another step in Mort’s direction, raising a brow. “You want to know who I am? ” Her voice sounded like she was making fun of the question. “Minerva is the name, ” she introduced herself, showing her teeth in an amused smile. “But I doubt that’s what you’re after. ” Another step forward as her demon stepped closer to her. “I go by many, many titles, ” she told him. “Bringer of War. Commander of Death. Call me what you see fit, ” she went on.
She wasn’t going to ask any questions in return. Not yet, anyways. She was curious as to what he wanted to know, as to who he was. She could find out better through his own words, than to ask questions herself. Something she had learned a long time ago. Mercury possibly disagreed with her, would tell her some valuable lesson about communication that just made her want to rip his throat out.

Not a single move she made went by unnoticed. Of course he knew that if she really wanted to, this all could be over very soon. His sire had been very persistent about it. Never mess with vampires. Not even if you were one yourself. And yet, he couldn’t just turn around and leave. He was under some kind of spell, enchanted by her mere existence. He wanted to know everything, but he also knew she would consider this as a little game to play. If she was centuries old, as she had hinted at, she could possibly just take this as a fun way to pass her time instead of a serious conversation.
Because he was young, compared to her. Just over four years old. He had zero experience. Nothing to impress her with. If she answered his questions, it was not because he made her to. It was because she wanted to. She introduced herself as Minerva, Bringer of War, Commander of Death. Mort nodded at her words. The next question could be considered quite simple as well. ”The Commander called you a Guardian of Vanaheim. What does that mean?” He asked. It was pretty self explanatory. But he wanted to hear her take on it as well.

‘Don’t trust him, ’ a whisper in her ear sounded. She stopped moving, no longer stepping towards the young vampire. The distance between them was small enough now. Had he been human, he would have still been able to hear her whispers at this distance. Close enough to look him right into the eye and not miss a single thought that shimmered through them.
“I will personally kill anyone who brings harm to Vanaheim or Her people, ” the Guardian answered. “But I am not alone in this. There are four others who guard the lands in name of our Mother. ” She spoke quickly now. This answer had been an easy one, one that she hadn’t felt like answering too much. She wanted something more interesting. If he wanted to hear the stories that were centuries old, he could ask better questions than the one he could find if he opened a damn dictionary.

Every nerve in his body wanted to take a step back every time she took one forward. Keep her at a safer distance. Yet, he didn’t. He knew she could see the fear in his eyes. He had never been good at hiding it anyway, so he had actually given that up a long time ago. But there was also a glimpse of determination. He wanted to figure this out, understand it better. Have this conversation, even if it would cost him his eternal life in the end.
”Five of you. Centuries old. No heartbeat, no breathing”, He summed up the things he knew after she was done talking. He could sense she was getting impatient. It made him change his tactics. Getting to the point of his visit more quickly, even if it meant cutting some corners. If it would backfire, was still a mystery. One he would find the answer to with his following words. "Explain it to me."

The vampire started noting the facts he had. How there were five of them who had been alive for centuries. No heartbeat, no breathing. The woman had never bothered to fake her breath. The mortals around her knew and those she met underway, were usually too impressed by other things to care about her breathing. Her chest didn’t move unless she sighed, which she luckily did often enough. Because of people like the young vampire in front of her, as he told her to explain. Almost as if she owed him an explanation.
“We were Blessed by Her light, ” the warrior answered. “Immortality can be a gift and a curse. ” A smile appeared on her face as she raised a brow, interested in what he had to ask. Was he going to finally ask the direct question? And if not, what was it? She was taking a slight interest in the young vampire, who had come all this way to ask her if they were the same kind. What did he want to do with the information? Make friendship bracelets and bond over their lust for blood?

From the moment he had noticed how she was not breathing, he had known. She was a vampire, even if she considered herself to be of a different type than him. He was cursed, she was blessed. Her words. What made her think that they were any different, was a question for later. There was something else he wanted to know. He wanted to know who had sired her. It wasn’t hard to figure out, but he wanted to hear it come from her. Just to be sure. Her words were cryptic, again, but he dared to conclude that she was indeed turned by Ceres. Meaning the Mother had been a vampire herself.
After the Warrior had left, back in the Temple, Lexa had told him how Her body had disappeared a few hours after her death. Disappeared. It was one of those loose ends that had made him wonder. His sire had told him about how vampires could still die. When they didn’t drink often enough, their body would shut down. Appearing dead to the ignorant. As a vampire, he knew better. ”The one that.. Blessed you, the Mother”, He started off. He tilted his head slightly to the left. ”She is still out there, isn’t she? Waiting. Until one of you wakes her up from eternal sleep”, He asked. Now she knew, the reason why he had come here. The one question he wanted an answer to.

‘He’s after Her! ’ the voice spoke. Finally, it stopped whispering. The anger in which it spat out its words made her turn her head to the side, throwing an angry glare at the demon that was stood there. Again, invisible to the eyes of the young vampire. ‘You need to kill him! ’ the other Demon whispered, slowly licking his lips. Minerva turned her head the other way, throwing that one a glare too, before she looked back at Mort. “He’s not a threat, ” she spoke calmly. Again, not speaking to him. “He wants to know, because he is stupidly curious, ” she then spoke, showing her teeth in an amused smile.
“Our Mother never dies, ” she answered his question calmly. “She will forever be ready to awaken if Vanaheim needs her to. ” That was about as much as she would give him on that matter. Where her body was, was something that only the Guardians knew. A secret that was going to be kept for an eternity if need be. Ceres had told them she was done. Had said that she did not want to wake unless her Children needed their Mother. Until that day, she wanted her eyes closed. Locked away from this planet she had spent too much time on already.
