His question was a risky one to ask. When he had asked Lexa about the true nature of the Original Command, she had almost gotten angry at him. Luckily for him, she liked him enough to forgive him right away. This woman, however, wouldn’t be so merciful. If he asked the wrong question he had no doubt she would punish him in the harshest way possible. Her reaction was not what he had expected, but really he wasn’t surprised anymore either. She looked left and right, frantically, before turning back towards him. “He wants to know, because he is stupidly curious,” She grinned, and he couldn’t help but pull up the corner of his mouth too.

The cursed one nodded when she gave the answer he had expected. So Ceres was hidden somewhere, just waiting. Until the day would come the Children were in need of their Mother. Now he had an answer to that question, he could go further into that matter. ”Why do you keep calling me cursed, if we are of the same kind?” He asked next. Honestly he had no problem with being called that. He was kind of used to it by now anyway. It was just.. Odd.

You've gone and proved
to be the misery of mankind
All you ever do is make excuses, God you're boring. Use everything you've got inside, you still don't find the courage. Stick your tail between your legs and go. You think you know it all? You're just a king without a throne.
He thinks you’re the same!’ the laugh sounded. It caused the Warrior to chuckle. “We’re not the same, cursed one,” she told him. Her voice sharp, but with clear amusement. “Yes, perhaps we have found ourselves in a similar situation,” she went on. “We are both immortal in a sense,” she spoke, focusing her gaze on his heart for a second. Ripping it out would still cause plenty of harm, even to a vampire. “But you’re wrong about the curse.

She turned around and started walking, expecting him to follow her if he wanted to hear about her secrets. “What part of it is a curse and what part is a blessing?” she spoke, finally giving him a question in return. One that would be key to this discussion. Because, why was he cursed, yet was her situation believed to be a blessing?

Again, she used the term as an insult. He could hear it in her tone. She honestly believed they were not the same and he wondered where she got that idea from. How she could call him the cursed one yet consider herself to be blessed with the same condition. When she looked at his heart, cold and still in his chest, a shiver went down his spine. He had no idea if she was still planning on killing him, and he honestly didn’t really want to find out either. If she decided to rip it out.. It would not kill him, as he didn’t need it anyway, but dealing with the pain didn’t seem like something fun at all.

When she started walking, the vampire followed her. Her question made him think for a while. ”Battling the monster that is fighting for control every day. To me, that’s the worst part. When your loved ones turn into potential snacks when the instinct to hunt kicks in”, He replied, thinking about that one day with Lexa. How that simple cut had almost made him lose control.

You believe there’s a monster I’m fighting?” she asked, raising a brow as she kept her gaze straight forward. As if she hadn’t walked this exact path a thousand times yet. As if she couldn’t walk it with her eyes closed by now. “You’re a young one. The early years are the most difficult,” she told the boy. “At least when it comes to bloodlust. It is after a few centuries that you’ll realize the true curse is to live an endless life without purpose, without anyone by your side.” It had been the reason for many vampires over the years to end their own life. Either by the True Death, or by entering a slumber. Like her Mother had done.

I was blessed with a purpose that will last as long as time,” she then spoke, finally looking at Mort. “Our Mother blessed us with a gift. One greater than life,” she then said, before looking straight forward again. ‘Too much!’ the voice in her ear sounded. ‘This Cursed One has to go!

While he was following the Warrior, he focused on the path she was taking. In the back of his mind he tried to remember where they were going exactly. If she was luring him somewhere, it would be better if he somewhat knew in which direction to run to get back to safety. Though he was well aware of the fact he wouldn’t get away if she didn’t want him to. “I know I am”, He replied softly when she asked him a question again. He could almost feel it sometimes. Crawling beneath his skin, fighting for control. The monster was very different from the human.

Her following words were not supposed to make him feel better, were they? It was his greatest fear. He had been turned with a goal in the back of his mind. A purpose for himself. Merely four years later and.. He found himself with another one. Equally as temporary as the first one too. “I too had a purpose. Then I fucked up and now I’m here. Talking to someone who could as easily end it if I say something wrong”, He said, slightly amused by his own stupidity. If she tried, would he really fight for his survival? If he had no purpose.. Would he give up?

When she turned around, Mort stopped walking. Pale blue eyes found his and again he felt that uncomfortable feeling in his stomach. A purpose that would last for eternity. Wasn’t that what all vampires were looking for? Was that the difference? “The Mother truly was a kind and loving person then”, He muttered, before following her again. “What did she ask of you?” He then dared to ask. He had come this far without making her angry. Why not go a bit further?

The Cursed one has to go. His existence brought nothing but darkness. Vampires without a purpose were a plague to humanity and should have never existed. It was people like the Guardians that were here for a reason. They actually filled a purpose in life, didn’t just drain the energy out of others so they could live their worthless life as a pest, hidden in someone’s basement. She listened to his explanation, but gave it very little thought. His personal purposes were of no value. In the end, they would die down anyhow.

Mort noted that the Mother truly was kind and loving, as if that was something that hadn’t been clear enough already. He asked her what the Mother had asked of her and the Warrior threw him a glare. “She asked me to be her Commander of War,” she told him calmly. She didn’t quite want to think back to her human days. “A task for eternity, unlike the Commanders you know.

Slowly, he started to understand. He didn’t quite like the realisation though. He had come here to learn, the secrets the Commander couldn’t share because they weren’t hers to. For a second he thought about the fact that the Warrior might not let him walk out of these mountains with that knowledge. Then he found his thoughts wandering back to what she had taught him. The difference between being blessed and being cursed. It was true, he had no purpose. He was just.. Kind of there. Existing.

The realisation settled in. It made him sad to his core. Hadn’t he just been so hopelessly lost because he had lost his only purpose? What if that happened again? Could he pull through that again? This time he had relied on Lexa. Next time.. He would be all alone. To get rid of those thoughts, he asked his next question. ”Why didn’t the Mother pick a Commander for the people and blessed him or her as well?” He asked. Wouldn’t that have been more convenient? No need for Conclaves and all that..

The cursed one’s next question actually made sense. Why wouldn’t they pick a Commander for the Commoners like they had done for their own people? She shook her head, actually showing a slight smile as she thought back to the first Commander of the People. “Because they can not be trusted with a purpose as great,” she spoke. “The Commoners have always been selfish. Ever since they first entered our lands, they fought. Whoever won, was in charge. If only for a few days before someone else started the same war all over again,” she spoke. “Ceres and I came up with an idea as to how we could make them respect a leader,” she explained. It would be pretty obvious that with this, she meant the Conclave. It was such a long time ago.

The woman had been quiet for a while, before she finally started talking again. “Their purpose is their people. To do that,” she spoke, “they need to be one of them.” She finally looked at him again, ignoring the deep growl she heard behind her. Cratos seemed angry, but she was not having any of it. “We’re watching from afar, ready to strike when needed. She needs to be there, be the blessing that Ceres once was.” That was the purpose of a Commander. Keep the people at peace. Be their spark of hope. Like Ceres had once been.

If the Mother had chosen these five people to carry out Her mission, then why wouldn’t she have picked a sixth one? Sure She would have had more control over who would be in charge if She had. He was pretty sure at this point that She only wanted the best for her Children. A Commander that had eternity would have been a good idea, he thought. But apparently the issue had been the Commoners, who wouldn’t have accepted a Commander that would never be replaced. The true nature of the people had always been violence, or so it seemed. ”The Conclave”, Mort nodded when she was done talking. A ritual that had been going on for centuries. Why was he not surprised it was not only to honour the Mother, but actually her idea as well?

They had been walking in silence for a while. Mort realised he was quite lost. The paths they had taken, had been old and not frequently used. He wondered how many people actually knew about their existence. The vampire thought about those words. How the Commander had to be human to lead her people. He could understand that too. They hated vampires. Wanted to kill them all. Except for the Guardians. If they even knew about their existence at all.

The Cursed One seemed to realise what she was talking about. He spoke the words and a slow nod came from the Warrior’s side. “The Conclave,” she repeated, confirming his suspicion. “For the Commander of the People to work,” she decided to start explaining, “we need people to feel a connection to them.

In that moment, a rare occurrence happened. Minerva remembered the day she was sitting in front of Ceres.
They will find the flaw in their Commander if you give them too much time,” she had sighed to Ceres, who carefully pulled her hand through her long, blonde hair. ‘What do you want me to do, Minerva?’ the woman had asked, sighing deeply. “We need to shorten the journey to leadership. Make them feel like their leader is the Chosen One.” A smile had appeared on her face as she seemed to have come up with an idea.

If it had not been for Ceres’ love for the Common Folks, Minerva would have never started believing that her Soul actually lived on in the next Commander. But, she saw it. The way the Children got raised in order to fight. The way the Child who was victorious, lost everything in life, yet sacrificed what they had left for their people. It was the reason they respected the Commander. Because it was the one person who showed to truly care. Not just for themselves, but for what happened to their people. To their lands.

The path they followed led up the mountain and once they reached the flat top of it, lower than most other mountains, the village came in sight. “This will answer all your questions.

“The Conclave,” She echoed, confirming his thoughts. She went on and explained. The vampire could see the logic in that. It was hard to change the nature of a person. Especially when they simply didn’t know better. If they found a way that worked, they would cling on to that. But the Warrior and the Mother had found a solution. The Conclave, where young Children fought for leadership. The victor would not be challenged, or at least would know how to handle a coup when it occurred. It was brutal. The first time he had heard about it, he had felt aversion towards the idea. He still did, in a way. He had seen what it had done to the last one standing with his own eyes. And he didn’t like what he saw.

Still, it would take a whole lot of effort to change it again. It would be against the will of the Mother. But times had changed, and eventually people had to change too. To adapt is to survive. The Children were fierce warriors. But could they win wars if other rulers decided to call them out?

“This will answer all your questions.” The Warrior sounded, and he was pulled out of his thoughts. The path had ended, finally, and they were standing on top of a mountain that was surrounded by taller ones. In front of them was a village. It was not remotely as big as Mother’s Heart. He turned towards the other. ”This is where you live?” He asked her. Another question with a pretty obvious answer. But he just wanted to make sure he had all the right information.

The voice had been whispering to her without stop. Commander, commander, commander… The Warrior brought her hands to her head, completely missed the question Mort asked her. Commander, commander, commander… She slowly bent forward, grabbing her hair in her hands. “Quiet,” she whispered at first, feeling how her nails caused the skin on her head to bleed. “I don’t want to hear any of it,” she whispered on. The speed in which the words were spoken, caused them to be barely understandable. Commander, commander, commander… Suddenly the woman started clawing at her skin, seemed to freeze completely.

Until she screamed.

For a few seconds after, the woman stood there, hands on the back of her head, before slowly standing straight again. The black blood dripped down the sides of her face as she turned her blue eyes to Mort. Eyes widened, as if she was about to cut his throat. “They’re quiet now,” she spoke carefully. “They don’t trust you.” Nor did she.

Sell your soul, not your whole self
Today had been.. a day. And with that, everything had been said. And Mercury was bored out of his mind. Truly, did nothing happen anymore? Was this how life was after all these centuries? Just waiting for something interesting to happen? He had layed himself on one of the many rocks the mountain had to offer. One of his legs was dangling off the side, clearly he was bored ot of his mind. His eyes were turned up towards the sky, the stars even seemed to agree with him. Not one of them had decided to fall tonight. Everyone seemed to.. be non-existent.

But there. A sound, no two sounds! Mercury lifted his head, turning it towards where the sounds were coming from. It were footsteps, but not just from one person. No, they were multiple. Even in the darkness of the night, he could see them standing there. One was clearly.. his friend. Was she though? But then a scream was heard, a rather loud one. Yep, definitely his friend. The other? Someone who he could become friends with perhaps.
Mercury sat up straight, grinned and swinged his legs over the edge of the rock. ''Minnie!'' He called out his friend before waving and jumping down. It was bad for his knees, but he had been doing it for years now, they could handle it. ''You brought a friend!'' He spoke with a wide smile that contained much more than just plain friendliness, while he came closer, stopping a few meters behind them. The other.. had no heartbeat? Was he blessed as well? Then they surely could be friends.

Apparently she had been taking him up to this mountain with a goal, instead of just wandering around, like he had thought they were doing. He asked if this was were she lived, but suddenly she seemed to be consumed by a whole other reality. When she screamed, Mort covered his ears to block the high pitch sound. She turned herself towards him, her cheeks bleeding black where she had scratched herself. Her pale eyes were focused on him, looking at him as if she was about to rip his heart out.

They don't trust you.

This would have been his cue to run, but he was frozen in his movements. This was it. The end. Until someone approached them and greeted the Warrior familiarly. With a wide smile, the newcomer addressed him too, acknowledging his presence. Mort was perplexed. This had to be one of the other Blessed Ones. Normally he would greet him back, but he was still looking with fear at the Warrior.

Oh, for the love of all that was Holy. A familiar voice reached her ear and caused her to sigh deeply, scratching her head somewhat furiously. “Mercy,” she hissed. Her gaze moved to Mort again when Mercury asked about her friend. “He’s not a friend,” she answered plainly. He wasn’t, after all. “He came to the mountains looking for me,” she went on, smiling again. She didn’t seem bothered by the blood at all. “Asking about Ceres and our people, claiming our… Blessing was the same as his curse.” She shook her head and looked at Mercury again.

He’s a friend of the Commander down below,” she then said, smiling. She tepped towards Mort, her eyes widened a bit as she looked into his blue eyes. “Don’t you think that’s just… marvelous?
