Running out of luck

Oh boy, had he gotten himself in trouble. Again. But this time, it was no harmless mischief. No, he was outside, wounded and it was getting dark. How that happened, you ask? The Conclave was getting closer and he was basically still doubting if he had to participate or not. If he didn’t, he would have to leave Vanaheim for dishonouring the Mother. If he did, he would most probably die. So he had thought it would be a great idea to leave the Heart for a while to test his survival skills. Which had proven to be a challenge he couldn’t take yet.
So now here he was, bleeding from several painful scratches where thanks to a young puma. Cassian had been able to scare him off, but not without the expected consequences. The pain was all he could focus on for now, but he knew he had to find a solution to the issue that was nightfall. He would have to hide. And how could he do that better than to change into his little kitten form? He would be able to crawl in a much more confined space. The boy stripped his clothing and hid them in a hollow tree, along with his weapons. Afterwards, he shifted. The small black cat was still bleeding but at least now he could get himself to safety. He wiggled himself under the roots of a tree nearby, hoping it would keep him hidden from the predators and monsters hunting at night.

Sell your soul, not your whole self
Mercury was up early, or well, he hadn't slept at all but rather stayed inside. It was unlike him to stay in one place all day, especially when it was inside. But he did it anyway. He hadn't felt like he could plaster that same smile on his face again, so isntead of tortureing himself he had decided it was best to take some time for himself. But as the sun was going down he couldn't help but feel itchy, eventually deciding that he could go outside for a couple of minutes.
Those minutes had now become an hour and now he didn't feel like going back inside. Instead, he just walked around the forest aimlessly, listening how the birds were winding down and how a certain silence fell over the leaves. Only a few more hours left and the stars would be out. He could watch them again. But it wouldn't surprise him anymore, knowning that it would look exactly the same like yesterday and the day before and the day before that. No, Mercury didn't need the stars at this moment. He needed company. And what better company than.. a cat!
Mercury stopped dead in his tracks, a soft gasp escaping from his mouth. The poor fluff. Even from this distance, Mercury could see this kitten was not doing alright. ''Hey little guy.. or girl.'' He didn't know what this kitten was and what it was doing here. But it needed help. The vampire crouched down, slowly getting closer. ''What's up with you? Are you hurt? Where are your parents?'' Mercury asked as if this small kitten could answer him. Maybe he could. This world was filled with magic. Who knew?

Now the sun was gone, the temperatures dropped. Or was he just cold because of the wounds taking all his energy away? The small kitten missed the comfortable rug in front of the fireplace back at the Heart. Where Arawn would scratch him behind the ears and feed him pieces of chicken or rabbit. Would she even realise he was gone? Would she miss him? He knew his parents wouldn’t. They would probably be happy that their useless eldest son was out of the picture. So his brother could battle in the Conclave and earn the glory of being Commander. As bad as it was.. Cassian hoped he would die along the way. First of all because he liked Orion more than his own brother, and he didn’t want to other to lose. Second because he knew deep down that his brother wouldn’t be a good Commander at all.
Those were worries for later though. If he would even survive. The young kitten closed his eyes, in order to deal with the pain better. Not that it helped much. Suddenly a voice sounded, which made him open his eyes again. Fear was clearly visible in his silver gaze. In front of him was a man, a stranger, crouching down and closing in on him. The kitten had nowhere to run. His words didn’t really get through, but his voice was calming. Yet, the black cat panicked. So he did what every kitten would do. He pulled back his ears towards his neck, making a very threatening hissing sound. Impressive for sure.

The kitten hissed. Okay, so it couldn't talk. Scratch that off your list with hopes and expecations. But not all was lost, because the kitten was still hurt. And Mercury couldn't leave it behind like that. That would be utterly barbaric. The vampire stopped in his tracks, even taking some distance. ''Hey, don't be scared. I'm here to help. Don't worry.'' He tried again, reaching out his hand so the kitten could sniff it. ''I would've brought treats if I knew you were here, but you know.. I'm not like Juno. I can't see the future.'' He spoke, rolling his eyes. Mercury was just here to help, seeing this kitten here almost saddened him. No one deserved this, human or animal. ''But I can try and make you feel better?'' He spoke softly, a sheepish smile on his face. Please little kit, just let him help. Mercury only meant well, as usual. But now, now he meant extra well.

His attempt seemed to work. Not what he had expected. The stranger kept his distance though, which was the only thing he wanted for now. He was hurt and visibly in pain. Weak and an easy prey as well. He didn’t know if this stranger had bad intentions, but this was Vanaheim and he could never assume he was safe. He had never seen the young man around the village, which meant he was either an outsider or one of the people that lived outside the safety of the Heart.
The stranger didn’t give up though. He started talking again, soothing words to gain his trust. Cassian cautiously sniffed his hand, taking in the unknown scent. Could he actually believe the other when he promised to help? The question was, what were the other options? Arduously the black kitten crawled out of his hiding spot again, leaving blood on the branches as it dripped down his pelt. A very sad and helpless squeak came from the cat. Fine. He was out. Now what?

Of course Mercury could just grab the cat and make a run for it, but the last time he had done that he had to visit Apollo because his face had gotten all scratched up. Rather not. So, instead, Mercury tried it with words. He was good at talking, right? He could easily push people like Minerva over the edge, so why not try it to lure a kitten out of hiding?
It seemed to work. The kitten wriggled itself out from under the root and immediately, Mercury saw the blood. Worried, he started from the root to the kitten and back. ''Oh no, that does not look good.'' He mumbled to himself, picking up the scent of the blood. He had fed already, so this wasn't driving him mad, but pleasant was different. ''Who hurt you, little one?'' The vampire sounded concerned, a frown laying on his face. Oh, he wanted to help so badly, but only if this kitten would let him.

Thanks to his movements, the wounds had started bleeding a bit heavier again. How much blood could he lose before passing out? He’d rather not find out. He only knew he was feeling weaker already, almost unable to stand on his little paws. So naturally, he curled up on the cold ground. His flanks were going up and down heavily, as he struggled for more air. The pain was everywhere at once now. Hadn’t the stranger promised to make it feel better? He wasn’t quite sure if it had been wise to believe him.
Cassian sighed, as only a cat could, finally looking up at the other again. He now noticed his peculiar eyecolour. It was scary and fascinating at the same time. Nothing for a little kitten to worry about though. Besides, he had other things to focus on. Like, perhaps, not bleeding out.
