BRING ME BACK TO THE SURFACE
help me find my way back down
The past couple of days, he had spent in bed. Not because he was tired, at least not all the time. No, he was simply hiding from the world outside. Feeling sorry for himself while he was blankly staring at the wall. Healing up was costing him a lot of energy as well. Apparently it was important to eat enough food to refuel, but he simply wasn’t hungry. The trays filled with food that the servants brought up and placed in front of his door, stayed untouched until they came back to take them away again. From time to time he had a small bite, but he quickly lost appetite again. It was enough to keep him going, but barely.
So when he finally turned around, facing the room instead of the wall, he could feel how this movement made him slightly dizzy. The light outside wasn’t too bright, which meant it was probably somewhere in the late afternoon. His gaze dwelled to Elodie, sitting in the chair in the corner of the room. She had been sitting there almost every day. She was reading again, lost in thoughts. For now, he just observed her, not giving her any indication he was paying attention to his surroundings.

COLD BLOOD
black heart
They had been in this place for less than a week and Elodie already loved it. She wasn’t locked up anymore, free to roam everywhere she pleased, free to do whatever she wanted. Nevertheless, she spent many hours of her free time in the Captain’s room. Not that she had to. He was still recovering and although he wasn’t eating much, he didn’t seem to feel too bad. The thing was that she had found in reading a nice hobby. Time flew whenever she decided to get lost in the pages of a new book and the villa’s owner had quite a collection.
The Captain’s room was the most silent. He wouldn’t speak nor move from his bed all day long and although she knew he was more of a loner, especially when this weak, she also was aware of the fact that he could’ve used some company, even if just unconsciously. So there she was, sitting on a comfortable armchair in one corner of the room. Her legs were close to her body and the book was lying on her knees. After a couple of hours now, she had found her pattern. She would hug her legs whenever she was reading and then only move one arm to turn the pages in a thoughtless motion. It felt good to feel nothing for once.

It was interesting to see how she had changed. The scared girl was completely gone now she had more freedom to do whatever she wanted to do. He was still confused about the reason she decided to stay here. Fair, the villa was quite impressive. Way more comfortable than any house on the entire island, as it was a bit further away from the center. Maverick had given her a room for herself. She was taken care of. It didn’t seem like she felt forced to stay here either. She knew she could easily take a ship to the main land, and yet she didn’t. She had decided to spend her days with him in these chambers. He couldn’t figure out why.
While she was reading, she was entirely lost in the content of it. He wondered how that felt. His thoughts were a mess at the moment. A sequence of the most horrible memories, playing on repeat, over and over again. There was no way to shut them off. No way to escape them. The same way he couldn’t get away from the waves of pain going through his head from time to time. After she turned yet another page, he carefully scraped his throat. Not only to draw her attention, but also to make sure his voice was still actually working. ”Can you read to me? Out loud?” He asked carefully, completely expecting her to decline his request.

COLD BLOOD
black heart
Both her days and nights were extremely quiet, but while she spent the former with the captain, the latter were the time that she dedicated only to herself. She had her own room and everyone was taking good care of her so she didn’t really see a reason to go away. Honestly though, she had thought of leaving this mansion and finally be completely free. However, every single time, she ended up reminding herself what happened the last time she decided to go on a journey by herself. She was finally safe there and she didn’t feel threatened anymore. It was a comfortable solution, although she knew it was temporary.
A man’s voice snapped her back to reality. She had a little bit of troubles with linking the voice to a face, but when she realised that the person who spoke was the same man who didn’t utter one word in the past week, she couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow, surprised. When the meaning of his words finally made sense in her head, Elodie widened her eyes a little, even more taken aback. ’You mean the book?’ She asked pointing at it. She couldn’t believe that the first thing he was asking her after days of not speaking was to read him a book. In the back of her head, she thought he was cute, though she kicked out that small thought right after she realised it was there.

No one had ever taught him how to read. It was, after all, not a skill he ever needed for the job he had been doing. Being a pirate had been simple. The only thing he needed to know, was how to take care of his treasury. Keeping track of what went in there and what he spent again. Making sure he paid the right amount of gold to his former crew members, to keep them satisfied so they wouldn’t cause a mutiny. He had never thought of it as a big issue though. Who needed reading anyway? It wasn’t up until now, when he actually saw how much she was enjoying it, he felt like he had been missing out.
His question surprised her as much as it surprised him. He almost immediately regretted it though. It was, after all, just a stupid thing to ask. She probably thought the same. ’You mean the book?’ She asked, because she clearly couldn’t believe it either. His gaze darted away from her, suddenly not feeling too sure about it anymore. ”Yeah, I meant the book”, He replied quietly, his tone missing that usual sharp edge as he spoke. ”But never mind, it was a stupid request”, He then said, after which he rolled on his back so he could stare at the ceiling for a while.

The way he looked at her when he asked her to read what she was reading out loud for him to hear, was pretty serious. Lost in her thoughts as she was and shocked by his request, she didn’t realise that he really meant what he said and simply didn’t even try to hold back her disbelief. Her reaction was probably too exaggerated, given the fact that he suddenly turned around, almost looking embarrassed and his voice sounded extremely unsure. ”But never mind, it was a stupid request”, she heard him saying before lying down on the bed once again. ’No, no- I mean, of course I can read it’, the redhead stuttered a little. ’I guess it’s hard for you to focus on a book already’, she added, her tone pretty lighthearted, as if she was stating something obvious.
The fact that she didn’t think about him still being in pain made her feel extremely stupid and heartless. She was the one who healed him and knew exactly how long it took her to do that, how many energies she had to spend on it. So why was she now so shocked about the fact that he wasn’t yet used to the pain that he probably felt constantly in his eye? Perhaps even looking at things hurt, she couldn’t even imagine how focusing on those small words would’ve felt. ’Do you want me to come closer?’ This time she asked. After the last time she decided she had to keep herself from doing things without thinking about them first, but it didn’t seem to be working that well now. Maybe she would’ve gained some points back by asking him what he felt comfortable with.

BRING ME BACK TO THE SURFACE

What was he even thinking? He hadn’t said a word ever since he had been in this room. Now he had finally broken that silence, it was with an unexpected and quite strange request. He had never been really interested in books to begin with. So why would he suddenly want to know what it was like? Was it because of her? Probably, but it made no sense. Deep down he just wanted to make some sort of connection with her. Because he was lonely, in the weakest way possible. And she had already seen past the walls he had built. There was nothing left to be exposed. She could offer him a way out, even if it was for just a short time. Though he would understand if she didn’t want to.
Romeo turned himself on his back, looking at the ceiling. Her voice broke the silence that had been looming for days again. Her choice of words made clear she had no idea he couldn’t read. He didn’t comment on it, only hummed softly to let her know he had heard her. ’Do you want me to come closer?’ She proceeded to ask. He turned his head towards her, giving her a short glare. He tensed up a bit when the pain got worse, but eventually he relaxed again. ”If you think you can get comfortable”, He finally replied. There were no chairs closer to the bed, and he doubted she wanted to move the heavy one she was sitting in. That meant that she would either have to sit on the ground, or on the bed with him. And he didn’t know if either of those options were appealing to her.

COLD BLOOD

Since that night, the two almost didn’t speak to each other. He clearly wasn’t feeling as talkative, understandably. Whereas she… She simply didn’t have much to talk about. Not with him anyway. In a way, those days felt extremely simple. Maybe from the outside, they would’ve looked like two normal people that were keeping each other company. She was basically in his room all the time and no one really knew that they never spoke to each other. On the other hand though, it felt lonely. She felt lonely again, as she always had been. That’s why she could’ve never turned his request down, no matter how weird it sounded.
In fact, when she thought about it twice, it wasn’t weird at all. He couldn’t do much, he was hurting and had to rest, and using his eyes to read was completely out of the question. Another thing that was out of the question though, was her reading raising her voice tone. She wasn’t up for that and maybe it would’ve been better for the both of them, if she just simply got closer to him. ”If you think you can get comfortable”, he said making her notice that there were no chairs close to the bed, so it was either that or the floor. Elodie also noticed how difficult it seemed for him to simply say ‘yes’ to things. It was as if he didn’t even know the word. A soft grin formed on her lips at that thought, while she closed the book, keeping the page with one finger and made the few steps that kept them apart. She decided to sit down on the floor so that their heads where at the same level and crossed her legs, while leaning her elbows on the edge of the bed. ’Do I start from where I stopped?’ She asked with an unexpected naturalness, as if nothing had happened, as if they were two happy and carefree kids.

BRING ME BACK TO THE SURFACE

This uncertainty was so unlike him and it made him feel so uncomfortable. He couldn’t figure out what he wanted, nor what was good for him at this point. The situation developed and he just had to go with whatever happened. It was scaring him beyond what was healthy, because he liked to know exactly what was going on. Being in control had always been such a big part of his life. Predicting what the other was going to say or do, anticipating on it with his own actions. If he had to, he forced the other to behave like he wanted them to. Right now, it was so different though. He just had to accept whatever she had planned, which meant he had to give her at least some part of that control he so desperately held on to.
Leaving the decision to her, instead of commanding her around. When she finally got up, he had to keep himself from flinching again. Her actions weren’t that unexpected, yet at the same time he hadn’t expected her to actually come closer. A part of him still thought she would get up and try to kill him, or either leave and never come back. She did neither of those, as she settled down on the ground next to the bed instead. ”Sure”, He replied to her question. ”I just want to know what’s so special about reading”, He continued mindlessly, as he tried to figure out if that was really the case. It might as well be to just fill up the silence, or distract him from the memories that were tormenting him at the moment. At this point, he wasn’t even sure himself either.

Acting like she was with him after all they went through should’ve felt at least a little bit weird, but it didn’t. Not at all. Elodie wasn’t forcing her behaviour, it all came naturally and she wondered if it was because of their short but intense history. She had felt so many things with him in such few days than what she felt with anyone else during the rest of her life. From fear and anger, she ended up worrying for him, feeling sad for and with him and then she felt like she needed to help him. Now he was becoming more and more part of her everyday life and it wasn’t, for once, something that someone else was forcing on her.
Getting up from that armchair and sitting on the floor next to him lying on the bed, was also one of the things that she did without thinking much about it. Once again, naturally. Her elbows were resting on the edge of the bed and the book was right in front of her face when she asked him where did he want her to start reading from. His answer wasn’t what she expected, and furrowing her eyebrows the girl put down the book on the bed. ’Don’t you know how reading is like?’ She questioned him raising an eyebrow and with a slight grin that lifted up only one corner of her mouth. ’I mean, not that you seem much like a reader.’ She then added, resting her chin on her hand which was right over the mattress.

BRING ME BACK TO THE SURFACE

During the time they had spent in this room together, he had gotten used to her presence a lot more. Even though they hadn’t talked all week, he felt like he could tolerate her way better than before. He wasn’t as startled by her movements as he used to be. The fact that he had his right eye towards the room helped as well. He hadn’t really expected her to actually bother moving closer, yet she did. For a slight second he felt the urge to move towards the wall a bit more, to create some distance between them. But he refrained himself from doing so. If she was doing so much effort for him, he could at least be respectful and stay right where he was. He didn’t want to insult her, after all. A weird position to be in, as he had never really cared about insulting others and their opinion when he did.
But with her, everything was different. The rules he had for himself and his surroundings, didn’t seem to apply to her. Therefore he mindlessly exposed himself a bit. Which she obviously picked up. ”Yeah, well,” A short pause followed. ”I actually just can’t read at all. No one ever bothered to teach me and I didn’t really need it anyway so”, He continued with a shrug. His gaze trailed her face, waiting for a reaction. Would she laugh? Judge? Feel pity for him again? Hopefully.. None of the above.

Sitting so close to him, gave her the chance to observe him. Not his movements or his reactions, for once. She didn’t need to know what he was thinking or what he was up to, because she didn’t have to defend herself from him. Instead, Elodie was simply looking at his traits. His sharp bone structure, his amber eye, his tattoos. After all, she had been completely overwhelmed by so many things since she had met him, that she never stopped to just look at him for a while. Not having much contact with human beings throughout her whole life made her curious about how different people looked, so she stared at him, who wasn’t looking back, waiting for his answer.
When that one came, Elodie’s lips formed a small ‘o’ and then she nodded, her head still resting on her hand. There weren’t many emotions behind that reaction and she herself was surprised by it. Her expression was neutral. He simply gave us an information and she noted it down in her head as if it wasn’t a big deal. ’My mother taught me.’ He had just exposed a little bit of himself to her, so she felt that it was fair for her to share a little bit of her story as well. ’I didn’t really need it either though.’ She shrugged a little before finally lifting up her head and picking up the book. ’From where I stopped then?’ She asked pointing at the book that she was now holding in her hands with her chin, slightly smiling at him.

Sharing insignificant details about his life had never been one of his tendencies. He rather kept to himself. In his mind, every piece of information that someone had on him, could later be used against him. And he wanted to avoid such things at all cost. Not that it was truly hurtful to tell her he couldn’t read. At least not in this situation. He had no power over her anymore anyway so it didn’t matter. For a minute it almost felt like they were having a normal conversation. As if his whole world hadn’t been flipped upside down by what had happened. Of course he reminded himself not to get used to it. Because, in a way, she still scared him senseless. She was still a threat, or more specifically, she could turn into one at any given moment.
Because his trust issues weren’t magically disappearing. He could tolerate her closer to him than he would with anyone but that didn’t mean he wasn’t expecting her to turn on him suddenly. It was more a sort of acceptance. If it happened, it happened and he could do nothing about it. The information she shared in return, was stored into his memory quite easily. A reflex he always had. Knowledge was power. Her voice pulled him out of thoughts. ”Aye”, He hummed affirmatively, subconsciously copying her smile. Gg wp.

Which part of their relationship was ‘fair’, Elodie still had to know. After everything they’ve been through, the girl should’ve felt at least slightly used, slightly at disadvantage. Yet, she disclosed some things of herself that basically no one knew. She gave him an advantage, but she didn’t think of it like that. She didn’t feel like they were at war, that they needed to be one step ahead of the other all the time. In fact, to her they could’ve finally had a relationship where the both of them were equal to each other.
If he, unlike her, took it as an advantage, she didn’t know, but she hoped that it wasn’t the case. His reply to her question, came right when her mind was about to shift in a darker place. His smile brightened up his face and, even if just for a moment, Elodie felt her own smile fading a bit. She had never seen him smiling. They didn’t know each other that well, that was true, but that smile on him looked as weird as it looked perfect on his lips. Slightly shaking those thoughts from her head, the girl hid her face in the pages of the book and with a soft voice, started reading for him.

It was hard not to fall into old habits. Unlike before though, he would not use this information to his advantage, nor would he try to figure out more about her in order to do so. She was safe around him, purely because he had no intention to ever use violence against her ever again. They were past that since she had seen him at his weakest and most vulnerable state. Whatever intimidation he would display would never be as effective as before. She would see right through it, knowing what he was hiding behind his attitude. Besides, he was not even sure if he could ever go back to the ways he had before. How to reestablish his authority to guarantee his own safety. It would take a lot of effort and he was not ready for it. Perhaps he would never be.
Her voice filled the room as soon as she started reading. It was pleasant, soft yet rhythmic, and it made his thoughts drift off quite easily. There was nothing else going on in his mind for now. Just her voice. He wasn’t even sure if he was actually hearing all the words she was reading out loud. It was hypnotising. The story by itself, and the sound of her voice. He repositioned himself slightly to get more comfortable. He wasn’t sure how much time had passed by that point, and it didn't really matter either. He just knew he wanted it to last forever.
