Secrets I have held in my heart
Are harder to hide than I thought
And here he had thought Rhoynar would treat him better than Navarre ever would. But here he was, spitting blood on the cobblestones which were lit up by the moon that was high above him. He had thought he was safe on this island, that he could rebuild his life here. But instead, someone had found him and they wanted to let him know they had found him. And now he was walking here, all bloodied and bruised and probably looking like some hobo freshly thrown out of a pub because he had been drunk. He wasn’t even drunk in the slightest but right now he really needed a drink.
Stumbling through the streets, he held a hand against the nearest brick wall to keep himself up. He could feel glass stuck in his hair where the bottle had hit him. The wound on his head had stopped bleeding, but it had seeped over his cheek, leaving a nasty stain on his face that made him look anything but approachable at the moment. Alessandro stopped to lean against the wall, black spots hitting his vision as he could feel he was getting lightheaded. He either had to find a place to sit real soon, or he was about to faint on an unknown street in an unknown city he wasn’t even sure was all that friendly.
The smuggler took a deep breath in and a deep one out. Maybe it had been better if he had just stayed in Falkreath. But the cold was getting annoying and he had missed this way of life way too much. But instead he had gotten into one of the worst situations besides the day he had fled Navarre and he didn’t even know the dudes who attacked him. What he did know was that if he didn’t find help fast, he sure was about to die tonight. Or so it felt.

He wasn’t used to this anymore.
He wasn’t used to the feeling of alcohol running through his veins anymore, making him feel particularly lightheaded and light-footed as he walked out of the bar.
His slender fingers traced the rough brick wall of the alleyway he walked in (he didn’t know why; to help him walk upright or to trace his way back home to his villa on the hill, as if he’d scattered a trail of breadcrumbs on his way there). Jasper had spent most of his evening drinking away his stress and tension in the most un-governor way possible, treating everyone to drinks, making them like him, round after round after round – as if consuming an ungodly amount of alcohol would make him immune to the plague that roamed his city.
As if alcohol could make him go back to simpler times. When all he had was a boat and all the time in the world.
He had entered the bar when the sun was still high up in the sky; and now the moon showed herself, cloaking Sunfall in an almost magical silverish light. The governor looked up at the night sky as if he had never seen it before, hypnotized, suddenly in love with his own city, eyes widened, his hand still tracing the brick wall.
Jaspers trance abruptly came to an end when he felt how he bumped into another person, immediately making him look down at the alleyway again. ’Oh! I’m so, so, so sorry,’ he managed to say, shrugging his shoulders, ending his sentence with a laugh, his voice nothing more than a drunk, hushed whisper, intensified by his harsh accent. Jasper knew he should have walked past the dark-haired and clearly troubled stranger to continue his way home, but there was something that made him stand exactly where he was.
He knew him. Even in this state he was in, with alcohol seeping through every pore of his body and blood covering the stranger’s face, he could still recognize him.
It couldn’t be him. It couldn’t.

The more he stayed upright, the harder it got for him to stay awake. This wasn’t good, this wasn’t good at all. In this whole situation, Alessandro suddenly thought back to his family, how they probably didn’t even care what was happening at the moment. Or well, they shouldn’t care. After all, if one of them was caught in the act, nobody knew them. They weren’t family then, they weren’t even aqquintances. Once you got caught, you were on your own. And Alex had known this from the day he was born. But being here now, so far away in unknown territory and feeling more dead than alive, he couldn’t help but be scared.
And that feeling intensified when he suddenly felt how someone graced over his arm. His first impulse was to pull back, to grasp his body and brace himself for any punch this stranger would give to him. But all he got were words and a laugh. A laugh he recognized even now. The smuggler didn’t even want to look at the stranger as he was scared to see what he looked like. His hair fell in his face, messy and sticky from the blood of the wound. Everything was blurry. He lost his footing, falling forward and grasping the shoulders of the ‘stranger’ in front of him in hopes of trying to stay up. ’’Fuck.’’ He grumbled with a hoarse voice that was barely hearable. This was all kinds of bad.

Jasper wasn’t even alarmed by the blood covering the stranger’s face – it was an all too familiar sight for him, bar fights that got out of hand and were settled by throwing wine and beer bottles at each other, littering bar floors and streets with tiny shards that lit up like crystals in the moonlight. Sunfall was a relatively quiet and peaceful city – but this part of the town (where a regular governor wouldn’t even dare to walk and the Priests of Sol shied away from) almost reminded Jasper of Isla de Juegas, the pirate town so famous for its unruly citizens.
The governor knew how to handle himself – and how to handle his liquor (or so he thought). He could probably still throw a punch, take out his dagger, stab someone to defend himself – he was used to this.
But the mere sight of the stranger he’d just bumped into, haphazardly clinging onto the fabric of his blouse, made him sober up more quickly than any medication ever could. Jasper felt himself growing dizzy, not sure if it was the alcohol releasing its last toxins in his body or the thought this ‘stranger’ could really be who he thought it was.
What were the odds of them meeting here of all places, in this town, right at this exact moment?
Fuck. The silently uttered word seemed to echo against the brick walls of the alleyway, ringing loudly in Jaspers ears. The scrawny brunet grabbed his shoulders, so Jasper looked down on him, trying to see his eyes through the strands of hair his face was hidden behind. The sudden movement made him grab the stranger’s thin shoulders by reflex, trying to not make him fall on the cobblestone street.
’Al.’

He didn’t want to hear the voice of the other ever again. He had promised himself to stay away, that he no longer would deal with him. And fate just had to bring them together, tie them to one another. Right now Alessandro just wanted to scream to the sky and ask whatever God that was listening what he had done to end up in this situation. He didn’t believe in any god, but he believed this couldn’t be coincidence. It didn’t stop his body from slowly giving out though, as he felt his feet slipping underneath him.
The other grabbed him by his shoulders and as a reflex the smuggler flinched, not quite out of the mindset that he was still being attacked. But somehow, grasping the blouse of the man in front of him, feeling that fabric between his fingers, it gave him a sense of safety. Al shook his head, feeling how it made things worse and not only was his vision giving out, things were starting to blur as well. ‘’Don’t say it.’’ He mumbled, trying to sound aggressive but all it sounded like was a feral puppy in need. ‘’Don’t you dare open your fucking mouth again.’’ He spat on the ground, blood obviously coloring the saliva as he tried to get up on his feet again. But it seemed to be to no avail as he felt himself slip away again and this time he did fall on the ground.
A curse left his lips as he tried to get a clear vision. He went with a hand through his hair, feeling how tiny shards of glass cut into his fingers. Maybe this was all a hallucination, a way for his mind to cope after the beating. This all probably wasn’t even real. A chuckle left his lips that could be perceived as hysterical. He had truly gone insane.

The alcohol was intensifying his emotions, deepening them, like a vividly coloured mosaic made out of every broken memory his brain could remember at this point.
Jasper saying his nickname was a sign of calling him to the present, a last melancholic relic of the past, a name he hadn’t said in ages but he had never forgotten – the last chance to deny that this was only a figment of his imagination gone mad with the influence of alcohol. But no - this was all happening. This was all real.
Alessandro Falk was standing in front of him, wounded, dizzy, weak. He recognized him as well – and the way he talked to him made Jasper angry, furious – a strange mixture of sentimentality he had felt moments earlier and the rage that suddenly sparked inside him.
The younger man didn’t want him to speak, to open his mouth. A bad move – it only made the governor angrier – how he, of all people, had the audacity, to talk to him, the governor of Sunfall, like that - Jasper couldn’t think clearly anymore, his intoxicated state crushing all the boundaries he normally had when he was sober.
So he screamed as the other man was coughing up blood. ’You’ve learned how to speak up now?’ Jasper scoffed, shaking his head, a shivering breath ending his sentence. ’I think I’m the one who should be mad, not you,’ he managed to continue in a snarl. ’You were the one who left me in the first place.’ A waterfall of curse words and insults left his mouth, as if the years of them being separated brought back every frustration he’d ever had – as if he had opened Pandora’s box.
Alessandro lost his balance – and fell. And Jasper let him fall onto the cobblestones, not trying to help him up as he looked down on him again. The other man raked his hand through his dark hair, laughing like a maniac. Pathetic. ’I should leave you here to die.’ Jasper growled, emphasizing the last word. ’You dying in my city. How very fucking sentimental would that be.’

Al didn’t know what he had done to deserve this. He had done everything right after that point. He had obeyed the rules, he had listened and he had done what he had been told. So what he done now that not only had gotten him beaten up, but also got him in touch again with him? The smuggler tried to go over the evening. It had been around late noon that he had arrived at Sunfall, around eight when he had walked into a bar and about three hours later when he had left and had met those joyful people on the streets. The only thing they had done was scolding him, calling him names and eventually he probably had said the wrong word and they had gotten offended. Or something like that. It could very well be that he had nothing to do with them.
But he did had anything to do with Jasper. Or well, not anymore but now that they crossed paths, a lot of memories he hadn’t thought about in years suddenly flooded his senses. The man didn’t even try to get up, knowing that he would probably faint if he did anything too fast. What he did try, was look up at the man standing closeby, the one he didn’t even want to see.Hearing those words coming from his mouth.. somehow they hurt. Somehow Jasper still held a soft spot in Al’s mind. ‘’It couldn’t go on like that.’’ The smuggler replied, trying to sound just as harsh as his ‘friend’ but ultimately just sounding very weak. ‘’We both would have ended up dead.’’ Alex let his hands rest on the cool cobblestones, trying to make the most of it while he was still on the ground.
He had avoided Jaspers gaze until he spoke again. His eyes shot up, trying to find his in this darkness. His city? His city? Al wasn’t sure if he was dreaming or that Jasper had gone mad. ‘’Your city?’’ Now it was his time to scoff. ‘’You couldn’t handle one heartbreak so you just turn your back on all of it and start to rule a city?’’ It was quite obvious Alessandro didn’t really believed him, or that he wanted to believe him. ‘’That doesn’t sound like the Jasper I knew..’’ Was followed by a very soft mumble as he let his back rest against the brick wall. It wasn’t that he wanted to die tonight, and he absolutely didn’t want to die with him watching.

Most people thought of their first love with an indescribable yearning, a nostalgic fantasy they could escape to in a daydream or whenever they wanted.
For Jasper, the memory of Alessandro and him felt like breaking his ribcage open with a pickaxe.
They went back, way back. Before Jasper had even thought up his alias Maverick and before he had met Romeo. Their relationship, short but oh so sweet, fuelled with red wine, awkward sloppy kisses and the summer sun, had at least done some good – it had made Jasper realise he could never love a woman the way he loved a man (the way he loved him). And it had learnt him one lesson that he still kept with him like a mantra: to never start a relationship with the job he had. Never. It would hurt too much – and he was sure his heart couldn’t handle another episode of relational drama.
He could finish this all so easily, couldn’t he? A nicely aimed jab to his former lover’s heart and he would be gone forever, taking the memories of their relationship with him in his grave – the way he used to solve all of his problems when he was younger. But many of his former victims were anonymous, simply men who were at the wrong place at the wrong time. Alessandro was different, they had spent such a long time together getting to know each other, and although the governor wanted to despise him, he knew he couldn’t.
Jasper wanted to yell, to throw himself at him, to pull him up by his hair, to take the dagger hanging on his belt and pierce him like a voodoo doll. The only rational part left in his body told him to stay exactly where he was standing now however, and so he continued to look at him from a height, spitting profanities at him – at least those wouldn’t physically hurt him.
It couldn’t go on like that. Of course it could. ’You know you’re lying,’ Jasper slurred, shaking his head, the alcohol giving an edge to his voice he didn’t know he possessed.
’My city, yes.’ Jasper squinted his eyes, trying to meet the other one’s – it was obvious he didn’t believe him, and he regretted the fact he chose not to wear his Sunfallian cloak tonight, so he couldn’t prove it to him. His next words made him grumble. ’You really think I spent more than ten years of my life crying over you? No, Alessandro.’ He kneeled next to him so he could finally look the other man in the eyes. ’I continued my job, made a name for myself in Rhoynar and now I’m here.’ While speaking, Jaspers face leaned closer to his. ’It’s what you could call success.’
His hand found support on the brick wall, feeling how his dizziness still hadn’t subsided. His decision to swap his unsure, adventurous life as a smuggler for a life as a city ruler under the control of the grand duke and duchess and the king of Valyria had surprised many of his past acquaintances – did he just hear disappointment in Alessandro’s voice? ’It seems like you didn’t really know me after all then, did you?’

Secrets I have held in my heart
Are harder to hide than I thought
Was he a bad liar? Probably. And if he was not, Jasper always had seen right through him. Maybe that was because somehow Al always found himself feeling different around him. He didn’t need to be scared to get caught anymore, there was no risk, no pain, just them. Them and their endless talks filled with wine and sunsets and those god awful kisses that reminded him of the times where everything had been fine. When there were no worries and he could do whatever the fuck he wanted to do. Now, that all seemed to be a vague memory that both of them had forgotten.
But seeing each other, eye to eye, so close together again, it made Alessandro yearn for those times. He wanted to hate Jasper, but all he felt was nostalgia towards the other. The good times were winning from the bad times he had had with him. Suddenly he remembered how much he had missed him. He couldn’t stay angry, there was no point. Besides, his energy to accomplish anything at the moment, was long gone. The smuggler sighed, deeply. Closing his eyes, he let the waterfall of words that Jasper threw at him, wash over him. He wanted to drown in them. And what was he to reply? Because Jasper was right. He had made a name of himself, he had booked success. Alessandro was still stuck in that same place he was in ten years ago. He was still the reason everything had gone to shit.
So what now? Should he get on his knees? Should he beg for forgiveness? Or should he just push the other away again, just like before. Once again, Al had no idea what to choose as he didn’t even know what would be best for him. The blood sticking to his skin reminded him of what went down this night. ‘’Well, your city sure needs their citizens checked out.’’ The man spoke lightly as he brushed some hairs out of his face, which immediately fell back again. ‘’Perhaps. Perhaps I just didn’t wanna know.’’ Or maybe he had always known and just refused to see it. Maybe he had only eye for the Jasper he had loved and maybe still did.

He always wanted to believe that Alessandro couldn’t hurt him anymore, that everything between them was said and done. Jasper knew that wasn’t true, that his relationship had made his mark: he was still hesitating to truly commit to someone, apart from a few flings here and there he could send away when the sun came up. He never wanted to feel that dull heartache anymore, never wanted anyone to know everything of him, including his deepest emotions and darkest secrets. Jasper couldn’t count the times he had told Alessandro absolutely everything over a few bottles of acidic and low-quality white wine too many – the loss of his father, the only reason of him becoming a smuggler being that he wanted to send money to his mother so she could still live happily in their family home on Sunfall… How he regretted all of that now.
How careless they were. Careless, stupid teenagers who lived in the moment and didn’t worry about the next day.
They were teenagers then but they were grown men now – Al’s jawline was a bit sharper than he remembered, his hair was longer, but it was still him. Jasper let out a sigh as he looked into Alessandro’s dark doe eyes, remembering how often he could get lost in them once upon a time, not wanting to say anything because he knew it would end in an insult.
Did he blame him for the way he grew up to be, to shy away from any type of love and affection that lasted longer than a night?
Maybe he did. And maybe that was the reason why he suddenly could come up with these boastful words and accusations he screamed at Alessandro like a madman, alone in the alleyway that was eerily drenched in silver moonlight, making everything seem coloured in black and white except for the maroon blood that was gushing from Alessandro’s face and dried up in his hair. The other man was taking his insults and arrogant boasting without comments, closing his eyes as he sat there against the brick wall.
Did he know about his alias? Did he know the illustrious Maverick had been him all along, while he was doing… God knows what? ’You got yourself into a proper mess again, didn’t you?’ Jasper shook his head, immediately pressing his eyes closed since the alcohol-induced dizziness dawned in on him again. ’It’s good we finally got to know each other then. After all those years.’ His voice oozed bitterness as he coughed, clearing his throat.

Secrets I have held in my heart
Are harder to hide than I thought
The past years had been going by, just as he had been going by. One moment he was there, the other he was somewhere else. He was gone, he appeared, he did his business and he was gone again. Perhaps you couldn’t really call it living, always looking over your shoulder, always conducting conversations in shady alleys. You would think that after being in this life since forever, Alessandro would know how to defend himself. And yet, he always managed to get beat up, get destroyed. And somehow he always build himself up again, something was driving him to continue. He had never known what exactly it was, but being in this alleyway now, face to face with someone he had thought had been lost long ago, something within him stirred and told him that perhaps he had known all along.
This meeting was wrong in every way. This was not how things were supposed to go. And yet, it was right because it showed exactly where both of them were in their lives. Jasper high and mighty, ready to take on the world. Alessandro still stuck in his old life, in the past even. He hadn’t grown much from the errandboy he used to be. Though he now worked on his own, there would never be a time where he could tip to his former colleague. But he never wanted to be above him, he just wanted to be with him. And even that had been too much to ask.
And now they were here and Al had no idea what to say. So he took it all in, trying to process it as a headache slowly started to make itself known. The blurring of his vision was slowly clearing but he could feel that if anything would happen fast, he would be gone. The bottle to his head and the kick that had followed afterwards sure had left their damage. His body was, besides cuts and bruises, mostly unscathed. It were Jaspers words that brought a faint but crooked smile on the face of the smuggler. ‘’What else did you expect from me?’’ He retorted, staring back at the other. No, he hadn’t changed. The vibe between them was strange and though Alessandro knew he was in a very wrong place at a very wrong time, he wouldn’t hesitate to accept Jaspers help. Perhaps he would be stabbed in the back, but at least he knew he deserved it. ‘’It’s nice meeting you then. I’m Sam.’’ Another poor joke as he reached out to Jasper both expecting the other to shake his and and to help him up. Because he wasn’t planning on staying in this alleyway for the rest of the night.

How should this sudden meeting end? Should he leave him here to die, as he had promised him mere moments ago in a drunken haze? Or should he help his former lover, since Jasper was clearly the most stable one of the two of them – at least he could stand up and walk away right now if he wanted. Not that he would walk in a straight line, and he would probably trip over every cobblestone that wasn’t exactly horizontal, but the thought of him being able to flee this situation at once was giving him some strength.
Alessandro was staying eerily quiet in the middle of his anger attack, something that had surprised him. The younger man was always the one who liked to live on the edge the most, the one who would never turn down a fight.
What did he expect from him? Next to nothing, if he would be honest. He certainly didn’t expect him to end up on Sunfall of all places, all broken and messy. ’I had expected you to grow up a bit, at least.’ But would the two of them ever grow up? That was the real question. They probably never would. Jasper had acquired this starring role when he became the governor of Sunfall, with a matching cloak and shiny, golden rings so he could play the part excellently. But if he took away that façade, he was still a low-class smuggler just as Alessandro was, not of royal blue blood, trying to rule a city while he knew next to nothing about politics. But he knew basic strategies, basic accountancy and had a few connections in high-end places – and that seemed to do the trick. For now.
Alessandro introduced himself as Sam, and suddenly, he felt like a teenager again. ’Sam?’ Of all the names you picked Sam? He wanted to make a snappy comment, but Jasper couldn’t help but laugh as he felt the corners of his mouth curl up in a smile. ’Maverick.’ His hand reached out to him and Jasper linked his slender fingers with his, not breaking his gaze away from Alessandro since he was curious if his former alias would ring a bell. Jasper tried to collect his strengths as he got up, pulling Alessandro up as well. They were standing on their feet for no more than two seconds as another wave of vertigo hit him, making his back end up against the brick wall together with Alessandro. ’You fucking idiot,’ he whispered, half-laughing as he pulled the other man closer to him in a reflex not to fall down again. ’You idiot.’

Secrets I have held in my heart
Are harder to hide than I thought
Of all times he had to pick tonight, of all places he had to pick an unknown island and of all people, he had to pick Jasper. Either the stars were aligned perfectly, or things were about to go even more horrible. Alessandro didn’t care anymore, he had peace with what he had found. Sure, this wasn’t the best of circumstances, but when were circumstances ever good when you met an ex-lover? It might have been better if he hadn’t been bloodied and bruised and his friend here wasn’t drunk of his ass. But that was what he got and he had to live with it. And right now, he wanted to hold this moment as close as possible.
Sitting on these god awful cobblestones at night hurt. But it didn’t hurt as much as his heart did right now and Al wasn’t sure if it was just the old heartache coming up again from years ago or if this was a whole new thing. Because truth be told, after him, after Jasper, he had never found someone who he enjoyed the worst moments of his life with better. The two had seen each other at their best and at their worst and all it had given them was a bitter sweetness in their mouths that no strong drink could wash away. It was either swallow or spit it out, only for it to return moments later. There was nothing that could rid these feelings away.
He had expected him to have grown up a bit. It might have been a good choice to do so, but maybe Al had been stuck in the past and stuck in those bittersweet moments he so desperately wanted back. ‘’I never do something that’s good for me.’’ He retorted with a faint smile as he heard the other repeat the name he had given. It was a stupid name, a simple one, easily to remember and easily to forget. There were hundreds of Sam’s on this earth. ‘’I’ve never been the creative genius that you are.’’ Was that.. a compliment? Where had this conversation brought them? No, let’s rephrase that. What had this conversation brought them? Because Alessandro was all kinds of confused.
The other pulled him up, their fingers intertwined. The first contact of their skins against each other since years. And it felt like nothing had changed. Maverick. Maverick. It took him longer than he wanted to, blame the glass shards in his head, but it hit him. And all of the sudden it felt like another door in his head was opened. Memories that had been cramped up for years flooded his mind and he gasped. But that gasp went up in the air as their bodies touched and he was pulled closer. Suddenly, he wasn’t old anymore, he wasn’t here. He was back at the beach, two empty bottles of wine between them and a lot of words that blurred and slurred. No clothes between them and more happening than just the touch of their fingers. Vague memories of better days.
‘’I never learn.’’ He mumbled with a soft smile as he felt his knees buckle and his head hit Jaspers shoulder. It was immediately followed by a curse word as Alessandro had noticed that standing up straight was not improving is condition in the slightest.

Sunfall had always been home. It was the island where he grew up on, where his father had learned him how to sail and his mother picked lemons from the orchard to use in her lemon pie.
It was full of memories that reminded him of his childhood and adolescence – and on exactly this particular island he found another important part of his adolescence again. The puzzle piece that was missing.
Their story didn’t start on Sunfall but in Brightwater Keep, the capital city of Rhoynar and the trading centre of the country. They had connected easily; it was so rare to find someone that was of his age in the exact same business as he was in. As Alessandro was Navarran, Jasper made it his task to show him the gorgeous capital like a tourist guide, telling him about the best cafés and secret hideaways near the bay. Secrets hideaways where they would run to whenever they had a day off, taking as many wine bottles with them as they could carry.
Jasper wasn’t a smuggler by blood, he became a smuggler because he needed to survive – and that was the part were they differed from each other. Jaspers father was an honourable captain of a trading ship, a maritime mastermind, and he knew his father would probably be turning in his grave if he knew what his son had made a career of, smuggling forbidden goods and overthrowing the old family dynasty of Sunfall to become the new governor.
Couldn’t they just skip the part where it all went wrong? The part he still held a grudge for, even after all these years? Couldn’t they just become young again, stupid, inexperienced, not brought down by life itself?
But Alessandro never grew up, or so it seemed. He was still in the part of his life Jasper had experienced years ago, being beaten up in the darkest corners of unfamiliar cities by unhappy clients or people who knew of his illegal businesses. ’Stop being so fucking melodramatic Al, please,’ Jasper grumbled. ’I’m still leaving you here if you’re gonna sulk around like this.’ Although he had given him a compliment – something he had never expected, and the governor frowned his eyebrows as he tried to deduce if he was being serious or not.
Jasper amazed himself when he still found the strength to pull Al up and for a second, it was just them and their husky breaths filling the narrow alleyway. Like past times. His heavily ornamented rings dug into the skin of the other man’s hands, probably leaving some marks as they fell back onto the wall.
He never learned. Stupid boy. Stupid Sam. ’I know.’ His hand found a way to the back of his head almost automatically, caressing his dark hair as he felt his fingertips become wet of his blood – a few dried up wounds that had opened up again. ’Where’s your boat? You need to get back to your boat.’ Jaspers voice became a whisper again, almost incomprehensible if someone wasn’t used to his strong accent.
