» History
Loraelei was born as the child of a high-status merchant and a courtesan. Her father refused to be associated with either Loraelei or her mother, so she was disowned immediately. The identity of her father was never revealed to her, and the only reminder she had of him was a small, woven bracelet he bought for her that she kept ever since. She was raised by her mother, growing up in the brothel she worked for. In her early years, Loraelei was mostly assigned domestic tasks, like helping with cooking and doing laundry. Since her mother was a slave, Loraelei was considered property of the brothel and when she came of age, was sold to a buyer in Isla de Juegas.

The young woman ended up in the Blooming Rose, one of the island’s many brothels. She was disgusted by the work at first, but learnt to adapt after a while. She made a couple of close friends with the women she lived with, trying to make a little extra money by extracting secrets from intoxicated customers. Quite a few years passed, until she was visited by a somewhat peculiar customer. The young man, who’d introduced himself as Rikton, paid to sleep with her, and they ended up talking for a while afterwards. He informed her of his many connections around Rhoynar and ended up introducing her to a man who was willing to buy her, if she’d agree to marry him. Loraelei craved the taste of freedom and found herself unable to turn down such an offer. She ended up marrying a man named Lyndon Reid and moving to Brightwater Keep shortly afterwards.

Her marriage with Lyndon was all but ideal. The man quickly proved to be difficult to deal with, having severe problems with alcohol and violence. He took out his frustrations on Loraelei more often than not, something she wasn’t able to bear for long. Less than a year after their marriage, she decided it was time to put an end to her misery, looking for help in the criminal underworld of Brightwater Keep. She contacted a man named Kaz Brekker, who agreed to assassinate her husband in return for her loyalty. Kaz kept his end of the bargain. A week later, Lyndon Reid was never heard of again and Loraelei was considered a free woman.

With nowhere to go and no way to make money, she turned to the Priests of Sol on Sunfall for refuge. She hadn’t considered herself to be a religious woman at all, but hoped to find some kind of redemption in a life of servitude. During her time there, she doubted herself greatly, unable to see herself as something good and holy due to her past. However, with time she managed to build upon her faith, and is still doing so.
