Through the void

I have no heart, just ice and stone
Made up of nails and teeth and bone
And I know exactly what I'm for. To hurt and destroy and nothing more. So hear my battle cry, I'm out for blood to claim what's mine. Finally questioning if I am my own worst enemy.
The blonde stretched as she looked down on her clothing. They would be heading for some information today. Hopefully, Rhoynar would not be a disappointment for once in her life and they would actually find some information she did not have yet. On a note she held some names, writers she had come across. Either mentioned in her current books, or writers of said current books who might have something else of value. A journal, a second book, whatever. She was a smart girl, knew what to look for. Popular alchemists were of no value. What they had brought out, was known to the world by now. Their books were no secret. It was the ones that no one had ever heard of, the ones that were ridiculed in their time. Those who once had a goal, but got blinded by the darkness their goal brought them. They often went insane, or got killed for being a witch.
Not only that. She needed a day off. A day away from Kaz, who hurt her so much just by being the way he was at the moment. She often wondered if it was worth it, if he was still in there. But, she had promised to be there for him and she refused to give up until he would tell her to. Until he would tell her that he no longer cared. Only then would she finally give up. For now, she had invited his brother to join her. The poor vampire had dealt with incredible abuse the past week. She had been rough on him, but Kaz… Kaz had taken things to the next level. Taking a day to talk with him, while both staying away from the negativity… seemed like a well enough plan.

LOSING MY GRIP
and i'm drowning
Luckily vampires didn’t need to sleep. If that would have been the case, he would have to deal with a tired mood as well. On top of everything else. Mort was restless, his mind constantly wandering off. Thinking about what he had done, finding a possible solution. Sometimes he even thought about running away. Leaving Allison behind to deal with Kaz. Run all the way back to Edmund’s mansion and hide there for the rest of eternity. Those kind of thoughts he pushed away immediately though. He would not run from this. He loved his brother way too much to abandon him, even after all the rough accusations he had been throwing his way lately.
It wasn’t like he didn’t deserve them. But when Allison had offered him a day of rest, he had accepted without thinking twice about it. With Kaz’ permission though. He had made sure the baby vampire had been fed for the day, before he made his way downstairs. For a minute, he doubted if he was allowed to feel a little bit excited. Not because he wanted to get away from his brother so badly, but because he would be doing something he usually enjoyed. Even if it meant spending the day with a woman that wouldn’t hesitate to set him on fire if he had no use to her or Kaz. It wasn’t hard to find Allison, as she was the only person in the house with a heartbeat. He made sure to make some noise when he approached her so she wouldn’t be too startled. ”Ready to go?” He then asked, a somewhat friendly smile around his lips when he looked at her in anticipation.

She loved Kaz. Absolutely. The doubt that she might not, was one she had lost a long time ago. It had probably been at night in Falkreath, where he was the one thing getting her out of her nightmares, where she had realized just what kind of importance the man held to her. Or maybe it had been even before that. Back when the nightmares had started, back when she had ruined everything she had for him. Back when she had decided that he was worth more than her future, her past. And now here they were. Unloved, broken. The longer she sat in this damned house, the more she worried that the feelings of the past were nothing but memories, doomed to fade as time went on.
‘Ready to go?’ Mort’s voice pulled her out of her thoughts and the blonde smiled. “Yeah, ” she answered. A part of her wanted to ask if it was truly okay to leave Kaz alone, but she couldn’t. For once, she could ask to be selfish again. Because if she didn’t, she would end up broken, in tears. And that would help no one. Without saying much more, she opened the door and walked through it, wanting to get away from this house as quickly as she could.
About halfway to their destination, she held the paper she had towards Mort. “These names are what we’ll be looking for, ” she told him. It was better if he could memorize them before they arrived. At least like that, the search might be as short as possible. “Their books will be old. At least a century. So no need to look through anything that looks newer than that. ”

LOSING MY GRIP

Over the past week, the atmosphere in the house had gotten more and more negative. The tension was high at all times, and he felt like he had to mind his words and actions in order to keep Kaz calm. It was even harder with Allison around. Not because she had a bad influence on the baby vampire, not mentally anyway. But she had a heartbeat and that by itself was a reason to be extra cautious at all times. He wouldn’t have left the blonde in the house all by herself with the vampire. Now that they both would go, it felt a bit better. He hoped Kaz could keep himself occupied and out of trouble in the meantime. At one point, he would have to trust him, and today would be a little test for all of them.
Once outside, he could feel some sort of relief. The further they got away from the villa, the more the air seemed to clear up. As if he could finally breathe again. Mort filled his lungs, even though completely unnecessary, just to taste the fresh air. They walked in silence for a while, but it didn’t bother him at all. There was a sense of peace to it. When they were about halfway, the blonde handed him a piece of paper. “These names are what we’ll be looking for," She informed him. “Their books will be old. At least a century. So no need to look through anything that looks newer than that.”
His eyes went over the list a couple of times. One of them had a familiar ring to it. ”I feel like I’ve seen this name before”, He said, pointing at one of the names on the list. ”Isaias Garret Kerensky. I think my sire had a book signed with his initials”, He continued. ”Or at least he mentioned the name. Kerensky sounds very familiar”, He then said with a slight shrug. It wouldn’t really matter anyways. It wasn’t as if they could hop on a ship and sail to a whole other continent just for a little book, right.

Sometimes, the blonde wondered if she would end up like the writers of her books. A name unknown, unimportant to the eye of the commoner. Where they would say her recipes were of no value. Held no use. A little sigh left her mouth. Somehow, she doubted it. Only if she would die before reaching anything, could that happen. Perhaps she should find a student, someone who could help her in her purpose. Someone who knew their way around potions and, more importantly, cures. Someone who saw the progress she made and could work from there, rather than looking at the failures alone. After all, the woman was sure her work would not be for nothing. She had put too much effort into it for all of it to go to waste.
Saying she was surprised to hear that Mort knew a name on the list, was an understatement. “And I doubt your sire would be willing to give that one up? ” she asked with a smile. Alchemists often had multiple books, but many only made one edition of everything. If they did remake one, it was because of progress. In this case, it was very important to have both the old and the new version. What did they change? Why did they change it? If she could understand the thought process of an Alchemist, the road to perfection would be a lot shorter.

The list that she had made, contained names that he had never heard of. And one name that he had. The library of his sire was huge. The mansion they lived in, contained at least three rooms that were filled with all kinds of books. It was not really a surprise. Edmund was old, even for a vampire. He had been through several eras, lived through multiple revolutions and survived more wars than he liked to recall. He was a man of science, who took pride in his academic knowledge in whatever field. He thought himself, mostly, in whatever caught his interest. With his age came a lot of wisdom and experience, that was for sure.
Her question made him go quiet for a second. ”I think it would depend on who’s asking”, He then replied with a little shrug. Surely, his sire, his father wouldn’t deny him the book. ”And why they are asking it”, He continued. There was the issue. He had no idea what Allison was looking for. She had mentioned her interest in Alchemy. Recipes of value, she had called it. Whatever that meant. She had admitted that her organisation had tried to exterminate vampires and werewolves. If she was searching to accomplish that goal, he knew for sure Edmund wouldn’t give her the book. It would be a very risky thing to do after all. Because who could promise she wouldn’t use whatever she was trying to make on him or his sire?

“I told you about my organisation. About how our plan was to eradicate the supernatural, ” Allison started. She had never had the chance to explain further, so this would be the perfect time to do so. “My boss was convinced all was bad and I agree. Living off another person’s energy? Turning into a beast every full moon? Clearly, these curses are not for the good of mankind, ” she explained simply. Her voice soft so no one else would hear, but Mort would be able to catch it without problem.
“I killed my boss to protect Kaz. ” For a moment she fell quiet, grabbed her own arm to stop the shiver that went across her spine. “So let’s just say I’m doing some research before I decide how to move on. ”

One of the reasons why Mort was so curious, was because his sire had always pushed him to follow his interests. He had known exactly how to awaken that part of his personality. It had always been there, but thanks to the elder vampire it had flourished. When she had asked him what he did for fun, one of the first things that had come to his mind was spending hours and hours in the libraries. Reading. He took pleasure in knowing things, whatever it was. Useless facts or knowledge that could one day prove its worth.
Today was one of those days. The name of the writer had triggered his memories. When he mentioned it, he could see how there was a slight change in Allison’s behaviour. She had become more alert, after dealing with the initial surprise. He wondered if she was surprised about the fact vampires read Alchemy books, as he could see her as someone who thought they were lesser creatures. Not capable of doing and enjoying human things.
Again, she mentioned her organisation and their previous goal. She had a point. But did it mean she had an excuse to kill them all? No. “I killed my boss to protect Kaz.” She then mentioned, and again he felt how her mood shifted. “So let’s just say I’m doing some research before I decide how to move on.” She admitted. Mort fixed his gaze back on the road. ”If you don’t find what you’re looking for, I might consider sending him a letter. I’m not sure if he would let you take the book, but maybe he agrees on letting you read it. I must say though, it’s a far travel. I don’t think you’d be back within a month”, He finally said. It would be better if she found her answers somewhere here in Fallen Skies, or she would lose time. Maybe too much time.

Perhaps, if she mentioned her change of mind, she could get more out of the man. If she told him about how she had been busy finding a cure. How she wanted to fix the mistake he had made with Kaz. Give him the option to turn back time. To keep Kaz alive. Actually alive. Beating heart included. But, Allison had two reasons not two.
The first being that she trusted no-one. Mort had proven his love for Kaz, but he had also shown his selfish side. He clearly did not mind being a vampire as much. It was a part of his existence. Would he want a cure? If no… Would he want Kaz to take it? Because it would mean that he would spend eternity alone, after all.
The second reason was simple insecurity. Once you told people, they got expectations. There were already too many people who expected something from her. Asher had his interests in the werewolf cure. He would not be pleased to hear how that went down. The King clearly had an interest in the cure for vampires. Ambrosia wanted a cure. She could handle disappointing all of them. But Kaz? No…
“I could always send someone to copy its valuable parts. There is a good amount of people who owe me, ” she told Mort with a little smile. “I appreciate the gesture. For now, however, there’s a good amount of names in this list. I’ll pray that luck will be with us for once. ” Imagine that. She? Lucky? Probably not. She hadn’t accomplished anything in life through luck and she doubted that it would ever happen.

If supporting her cause would mean the end of eternal life, he was not sure if Edmund would agree. The elder was so used to his existence that he would probably not want to give that up. He mostly kept to himself in his mansion anyway. Fair, he still needed the blood of others to survive. Like a parasite, feeding off of the energy of the innocent. But he tried to give those people something in return. No one was there really against their own free will. Not even Mort himself had felt that way. Of course he had a debt to pay. But it went further than just the insane amount of money Edmund had spent on him. It was hard to explain.
Either way, if she came knocking at his door, asking for a book that could help her find something to get rid of vampires.. She might get that same door smacked right in her face. Meanwhile he was walking beside her, on their way to the library. To help her look for books that could contain the same clues. Suddenly he wasn’t all too sure anymore about helping her. But there was no way back, was there? Mort took a last look at the names before giving her back the paper. ”Alright then. Let’s see if your prayers are of any use”, He said, while pushing open the door that would lead them inside.

Allison found herself in a chat with the first employee she found. Smarter than to mention any names she needed, she asked the man very simple questions. Who was the best Alchemist he knew of? What were the oldest books he had? Just the general questions you would ask once you entered a place like this. Nothing gave away what she was after, yet she learned something. The man pointed her towards the bookcase that held most of the ancient books. Written by mad men, he told her. ‘Their potions are said to cause madness,’ he went on. Idiot.
Allison eventually looked at Mort, gesturing that he should follow her to the bookcase in the back, where most of the untouched books were found. In the world of Alchemists, it was well known that the older the recipe, the riskier it was. People grew more careful over time, traded strength for security. Traditional Alchemy was no longer popular, got its own part in places like this. Where only the mad men dared to open them.
“So, ” she decided to start. “Why did you decide to come with? ” A book got pulled off the shelf and she opened it, focusing her attention on the recipes inside as she waited for a response. She hadn’t been too nice to the vampire, after all. He would have had enough reason to say no. Though staying with Kaz might have been worse.

LOSING MY GRIP

While Allison was interrogating one of the employees, the vampire wandered off a little to see what else they had in here. It wasn’t the biggest library he had ever seen, but it was more than he had expected from a place like Brightwater Keep. He doubted there were a lot of people here who could read, let alone would find interest in the topics these books covered. There was astrology, history, biology, medicine.. A wide variety of subjects. His eyes focused on another shelf, that kept books on monsters. He took one of them and browsed through it. He soon noticed how it was in alphabetical order. Behemots, chupacabras, shades, sirens.. Vampires.
From the corner of his eye, he could see Allison gesture him over. So he placed the book back on the shelf and walked over to the back of the library where she was standing. When she started off on the left of the bookcase, he decided to start on the right. In that way, they could work towards the middle. “So,” She started. “Why did you decide to come with?” She asked. Mort kept his eyes focused on the names of the authors, or any title that could mean something to her. ”I was out of fairytales to read”, He replied, a slight amused tone in his voice. Oh he knew what she thought about him. He wasn’t ashamed. ”Being in a library just reminds me of.. Better days”, He then replied on a more serious tone. Maybe he had hoped to find that same feeling here today.

The book she had found seemed to actually be written by a mad man, so she put it back into the shelf and let her finger slide past the names of authors, as she listened to the response Mort gave her. His first comment caused a slight smile on her face. When he said that a library reminded him of better days, she nodded. “Books are a great outlet, ” she spoke. “I spent all my time in my room as a child, reading every single book my parents had to offer. From fairytales to ancient recipes. ” A pleasant memory, even though her childhood was not that great. Still a lot better than his had been, obviously.
“Do you have any idea what I am looking for? ” she then asked, throwing him a quick gaze, before turning back to the books. “What if you’re helping me find the one thing I need to eradicate your kind? ” She raised an eyebrow in interest, as she picked a book from an author that sounded familiar. She opened it up and started going through the pages quickly, looking for certain keywords. There was no time to read all books in full, after all.

Were they actually having a civil conversation for once? It appeared to be. It was truly happening. What a fucking miracle. ”Yeah. For me it was a way out of my own thoughts. I didn’t only read stories though. My sire could be considered an academic, so he was pretty firm when it came to studying. I could always pick the subjects but he was the most happy when I took it seriously”, He recalled. The man had never pressured him into it. Luckily there had been plenty of things Mort wanted to know anyway. So it wasn’t really a punishment.
“Do you have any idea what I am looking for?” She suddenly asked. The vampire bit down on his lip. A soft sigh was audible before he replied. ”Then I suppose it’s time for me to run and hide somewhere far far away from you”, He said. He fixed his blue eyes on her for a second. ”And hope you truly love Kaz as much as you seem to do, so you don’t use it on him”, He continued. That was the most important part. Mort looked back at the books, pulling out one that looked very old and almost fragile. He put the book behind him on one of the tables, for her to check out later.
“Do you have any idea what I am looking for?” She suddenly asked. The vampire bit down on his lip. A soft sigh was audible before he replied. ”Then I suppose it’s time for me to run and hide somewhere far far away from you”, He said. I have no heart, just ice and stone
Made up of nails and teeth and bone
And I know exactly what I'm for. To hurt and destroy and nothing more. So hear my battle cry, I'm out for blood to claim what's mine. Finally questioning if I am my own worst enemy.
Mort’s words put a little smile on her face. So somewhere, along the way, she actually had something in common with the guy. Besides their mutual fondness of his brother, that was. “That must have been nice, ” she spoke. “My parents told me that alchemists were witches and their magicks were not allowed under their roof. ” The blonde chuckled as she shook her head. “So I took my stuff and left. ” At age fourteen, she had been with her boyfriend, stealing on the streets and learning her alchemy on the side. It had been an exciting life for sure.
As curious a person as she was, she started asking questions. Mort’s answer caused her to nod, even though she didn’t think he would see. “I would never do anything to harm him, ” she told him. No. Even if the King himself asked her to eradicate all vampires, she would only do it under the condition that Kaz would walk free. And, perhaps, she’d make the same offer for Mort. Not for him, however. That would be for Kaz. Because somewhere, deep inside, he loved his brother. “I’m not looking for a way to eradicate you, ” she admitted. “I am looking for a way to fix it. ”
