Something told her he wasn’t the one to wash dishes. But, she might be wrong. For all she knew he was the big brother that did all the dishes and cleaned the house when mama went out to work. It would surprise her, but who knew. She had no idea what else it was that he would do. Perhaps all the money he had was earned through luck and bets.
“Don’t I look the part? ” she asked, pulling up the corners of her mouth again. The white flower in her hair and the white dress probably didn’t help. As a nurse, she spent more time with wounded men than women. And of course - most of them offered to treat her to a drink after. Which was never something sweet. By now, she actually prefered the heavier drinks over the sweet ones other women drank. The thought of the sweetness made her want to throw up.
“I’m not from around here, so surprise me, ” she responded when he asked where she wanted to go. “Just remember the dishes, ” she reminded him. Wouldn’t want him to be washing dishes for an hour because he chose an expensive place, of course.

Having Max do the dishes would probably not end up well for either party. He couldn’t exactly describe himself as a hard worker, even within his own profession. Once again, that title fit his brother far more appropriately. It was almost starting to sound as if he had some inferiority complex towards Enzo, and he told himself time and time again that that wasn’t the case at all. He didn’t want to be like him. Ever.
Max snickered at her comment. Her look, complete with the pearly white flower in her hair, didn’t exactly scream ‘whiskey-drinker’, but when were stereotypes ever right? “I think it’s the flower,” he commented. Completely and utterly feminine. She might as well be ordering a sweet, white wine on the spot. His mouth turned into a half-grin when she mentioned she wasn’t from around here. “Now that’s interesting.” Her remark about the dishes made him smile once again, softly shaking his head before he started to walk into the direction of the more luxurious district. “Where are you actually from?” he proceeded to ask, honestly curious. “If you don’t mind me asking, of course.” He didn’t want to subject her to a crossfire of questions just yet.

It was the flower. “Have to look good for a date, right? ” she asked him. There was no way she could have known how horrible it would go, after all. Had she been aware of this, she would not have left the castle at all. Or perhaps left, but to go to a different city. Far away from the man who she had tried spending time with today. She would never forget his endless stories as he went from one to the other, barely even taking time to breathe. Horrible.
There it was. She had no idea if he knew about Nordshal or not, but to be safe she tended to not name the city. Even though she was happy with what she was, she also missed being a regular girl that could spend time with strangers without carrying this secret with her. ‘Hey! I have more than one monthly issue,’ wasn’t quite the first thing anyone wanted to hear when you just met. “I live closer to Falkreath, ” she told him with a smile. She was quite a bit from home, but that was fine. She enjoyed traveling, even if it was just within Navarre. “You are from D’auvignon? ” she asked, though she expected the answer to be yes. He seemed to know his way around, after all.

How nice. She’d tried to look good for her date. Too bad the guy hadn’t exactly been what she expected. “I’m sure you look fine regardless of the flower,” Max commented. Still, it added a nice touch. It seemed youthful, sweet, and it somehow lessened the blow every time she made a harsh comment. You couldn’t really be mad at a face like that. Her date probably had no idea what he was missing out on.
Emilia seemed to pause for a few seconds when he asked where she was from. He didn’t expect an answer, but got one anyway. Closer to Falkreath. That sounded… vague. But he understood the hint: she didn’t want to disclose that information. “Exotic,” he said in a sarcastic tone. ‘Closer to Falkreath’ could be anywhere in Navarre, really. When she asked him whether he was from d’Auvignon, he shook his head. “No, but I visit a lot,” he answered. “I’m from the country. My family owns a couple of places throughout Navarre.” Although he had multiple mansions to call a home, he preferred spending most of his time elsewhere. After a walking for a while, he turned a corner, leading them towards one of the most prominent taverns in the city. “There we are,” he announced, before opening the door for her. “Ladies first.” Contrary to popular belief, he did have manners.

‘That’s kind of you,’ a lady would say. “Aww, thanks, ” the woman replied instead. She had never been one for formalities. Something she would never be either. While she knew when to behave and show some manners, she had always been a rebellious soul. The wolf inside of her probably only made this worse.
“Rich family, huh? ” she asked, after Max had told her how his family owned a couple of places throughout Navarre. “Is that what you do? Enjoy the family’s wealth? ” she went on, a smile on her face. He wouldn’t be the first to live off family riches, without putting in any effort. In a way, she was the same. Her nursery job definitely did not pay for a castle. Then again - the only reason she stayed in the castle, was because she’d miss her family even more if she didn’t. If it was up to her, they would live in a small cottage somewhere… Where she could actually see them every time she walked through the house.
He held the door open for her and she threw him a smile. “He actually has manners, ” she noted, as she walked in.

Max liked compliments, and he figured others did too. So, he often went out of his way to praise people on anything quality that stood out. Usually their appearance. He flashed her a smile when she thanked him for the compliment. “You’re welcome.” Sometimes you just had to keep it a little cocky.
“You could say that, yeah,” he replied. Rich was an understatement. The Bourbon family was filthy rich, spoilt, rotten, absolutely loaded. But of course, people never really appreciated that kind of bragging. Max tried to tone it down, to keep it humble. Her question made him shrug at first. Enjoying the family’s wealth was exactly what he did. While his eldest brother was working his ass off, Max was going out in an attempt to spend the money as fast as it came in. It was quite aggravating. “I like to think that I contribute to it,” he murmured. Formally, he worked for the family business, and every now and then he actually managed to convince a client of buying their product. “But I prefer spending it.” Something that had become painfully clear in the very first minute she met him.
Max grinned widely as he held open the door. “Impressed?” he asked in a joking tone. Because of course she would be impressed by him having basic human decency.

Once inside, the woman raised her brows. This wasn’t quite the place where she normally spent her time. No… She had worked as a bartender for a while and it was exactly that kind of tavern where she was usually found. Filled with smelly, drunk men who were louder than those who tried to sell you fish at the market. Annoying at times, but she had found herself enjoying the mood around there. If you ignored the drunk bastards fighting, it was very… welcoming. Unlike this place, where she somehow felt a bit out of place.
“Not quite the place I’d usually visit, ” she noted. “Interesting. ” She couldn’t say that she disliked it. Nor that she was surprised that he had taken her to this place, rather than the filthy neighbourhood tavern. Though she would be quite interested in seeing how he would handle himself there. They weren’t always too fond of the rich boys, after all.

Max stepped in after her and was immediately greeted by the faint smell of his family’s whiskey. He could recognize the scent anywhere by now. The stuff was hard to avoid, especially in Navarre. The bar itself was carved out of tobacco oak trees, just like the serving tables. The counters were dressed in black marble. Emilia mentioned that this wasn’t like any of the places she usually went to, which brought a smile on his face. “Nothing wrong with trying something new,” he suggested. Maybe she liked it here, maybe she didn’t. He surely wasn’t opposed to taking her here again, if she wanted to. They were quickly offered a table and a waiter came up to them almost immediately. Of course, he turned towards Emilia first, informing her of all the sweet wines that were currently present. “I think the lady actually would like a glass of whiskey,” Max said, eyeing Emilia for a bit. The waiter just looked at her in mild surprise. Most ladies didn’t drink whiskey, after all.

“I couldn’t agree more, ” Emilia smiled. She had always been an adventurous person, ready to take on the world. Staying inside her comfort zone would only be boring. No, she’d much rather see new places, meet new faces. There was a first time for everything and she was planning on having a lot of first times. Unlike Arawn, who would never get a first time if she went on like this. Which only made her want to leave Navarre more. Perhaps she should just tell Duncan she needed a trip. How she would love to see Rhoynar.
The woman sat down and almost immediately had a waiter turn towards her. She started with a smile, but as he spoke the smile vanished and made way for a raised brow, while she tried to make sense of what he was telling her. Luckily, Max came to the rescue and told the waiter that she would like a glass of whiskey. The surprise in the eyes of the waiter caused her smile to come back. “I’ll take a whiskey indeed, ” she agreed.

Emilia didn’t seem to mind trying new things, just like he did. It was always good to meet other adventurous people. He wasn’t exactly fond of people who chose to spend their entire life in the same place, doing the same things. It seemed like a dreadful existence. He’d rather travel the world, and maybe he’d just found someone who could accompany him every now and again. If she was even interested in such a thing, of course.
The waiter needed a second to adjust to the fact that a woman was ordering whiskey, but he nodded. Of course, the next question the waiter asked was whether they wanted Bourbon whiskey. The question was accompanied with a wink, since the servant knew exactly who he was. “Sure, fine,” Max murmured. The waiter left the table and came back shortly with two crystal glasses, filled with exactly two fingers worth of Bourbon whiskey. Max reached for his glass and looked up at Emilia with a grin. “Let’s see how well you can handle your liquor.” Whiskey wasn’t exactly easy to bear.

It was almost funny how prejudice worked. She was a woman, so she must like sweet things. If she had riches, she probably did not earn those herself. There was also no way in which she could fend for herself. Women were not made to fight. Emilia had never been a sheep, but had been the wolf all along. Living in the shadow of her older brother, she had always had someone to look up to. The man had been so kind to her his entire life and in turn, he had earned her respect. More than anyone else ever had. They had a very healthy relationship because of it, if you forgot that he was a bit too protective and she was a bit too attached.
The glasses finally arrived and she took it between her fingers, moving the glass a few times as she stared into the liquid. She took a tiny sip, feeling how the alcohol started doing its job on her taste buds. She let it sink in for a second, fixing her gaze upon the man again. “So what does your family do? ” she decided to ask.

The higher ranks of society weren’t exactly concerned with trying to avoid prejudice. The waiter had even looked rather offended for a mere second. Women drinking whiskey, absolutely outrageous. Max usually didn’t put a lot of thought in matters like these, but he was currently finding out he quite enjoyed the way Emilia was challenging the status quo. She dressed feminine, yet she acted assertive. She had quite the mouth on her, too. It was quite amusing, to be honest.
With whiskey, it wouldn’t take long for anyone to get a little tipsy. Max wasn’t exactly sure if that was what he was aiming for today, though. He gripped the glass and held it up to his mouth, letting a little bit of the liquid slide in. He swirled it around in his mouth for a bit, finding the hidden tones of rye and cinnamon. He could even taste the barrels of oak wood the whiskey had matured in. After that, he swallowed, feeling the all-familiar burn rage down his throat. With a soft clink, his glass ended back up on the table. Right then, Emilia asked him what his family did for a living. A humble smile appeared on his face. “This, actually,” he said, holding up the glass for a second. “My family makes whiskey. We have several distilleries throughout the country.” He leaned forward a little, placing his forearms on the table. “What do you think?” The Bourbons prided themselves on their high-quality liquor. That’s why it would be greatly amusing if she absolutely hated it.

This was what his family did. Emilia raised a brow as her eyes fell upon the whiskey. Now she was interested. He told her how his family made whiskey. This particular whiskey, nonetheless. With a soft shake of her head, she chuckled. How big was the chance that she’d actually ask him out of all people to treat her to a whiskey? She got asked what she thought of the whiskey, so to make sure she would give a proper answer, she took another sip and took the time to properly taste it.
“I’ve never tasted something as sh- ” she started, before smiling. “Kidding, it’s actually really good, ” she admitted quickly enough. “So, what’s your part in it? ” she asked, curiously. He didn’t quite seem like the type to put in a lot of hard work for the brand. Perhaps he was a salesman? He had a certain charm to him. A bit of a strange one, but it was definitely there.

Technically, it wasn’t his family who made the whiskey at all. They simply controlled the company. The actual creation of the liquor was left to a variety of underpaid employees that were stuffed away in the various distilleries across Navarre. The Bourbon family just handled the financials and business side of things. Actually, the past three years it seemed like Enzo had been doing most of the work single-handedly, with occasional help from his siblings. They called it a family business nonetheless.
When he asked her opinion on the whiskey, she took another sip for good measure. Max watched her in quiet anticipation. The corner of his mouth started to curl upwards as she was going to say that it tasted shitty. It was a joke, however, and she quickly let him know she liked it. “Great,” he said with a small nod. At least she had good taste, then. Emilia asked about his part, which was a question that was easily answered. “Managing the accounts. I close new deals and make sure the current clients are happy with what they’re getting,” he told her. Formally, that was his role within the company. His actual input, however, left something to be desired.

“Sounds terribly boring, ” was the first thing she admitted. Managing the accounts. Making sure people were happy with the drinks. “Doesn’t quite seem like the job you’d pick yourself, or am I wrong? ” she asked, a smile appearing on her face again. Perhaps she was wrong and he enjoyed his job, never wanted to do something else. She knew it was rare, however. When a job was put on you by the family, it was very rare that there was no other dream that had to make room for it.
He had shown that he was quite the interesting person. For now, at least. He was clearly a bit too addicted to betting on horses, but he was also willing to spend his time with some strange girl he met there. Not something every rich guy would do. Unless, of course, they thought they were going to get something out of it that was definitely not going to happen. She enjoyed her time more than she had on her little fiasco of a date.
