THERE ARE KIND AND GENTLE GODS
mine isn't one of those

Everything was set up. All day, he had been working on the perfect altar, where he would bring a sacrifice to his God. It was way overdue, and honestly there was no better place than on this island. Sunfall, home of a church that worshipped a fake god. The god of the sun, named Sol. The whole island was infested with those priests. It was outrageous, an insult to the Drowned God and therefore to him too. So it wasn’t really a surprise the young captain was now walking around in the city center, looking for one of those that were a threat to his faith. It would be hard to snatch one away, cause they were standing out from the crowd so damn much. It wouldn’t go unnoticed if he tried to kidnap one by force. So he had to take a smart approach. Luckily deceiving people and manipulating them was one of the skills he had worked on all his life.

His amber gaze scanned the square and he suddenly focused on a blonde woman. She had a slender build, but she was rather tall. Nonetheless he was a lot bigger. But this time, he wouldn’t have to use his strength. No, what he needed right now, was persuasion. The expression on his face changed slightly as he put on a mask. His eyes were friendly and his gaze was soft. Even his demeanour was less threatening than usual. He approached the woman with a gentle smile. ”Excuse me, aren’t you a priestess of Sol?” He asked kindly. Hopefully his appearance wouldn’t give him away. If she had heard of a fully tattooed maniac roaming the streets and bothering the other priests, his plan would fail right of the bat. And he wouldn’t want that, to be honest.

my wings don't spread like they used to

A shaky breath left her throat as she attempted to calm herself down. Slowly, she lifted one of her trembling hands to her face to wipe away the single tear that rolled down her cheek. Her heart felt like it was about to pound right out of her chest as she turned her face towards the wall of the alleyway she had taken refuge in. Hidden, like a coward, she hoped that no one would find her. Especially not one of them. They thought less of her already, and she knew it. She despised herself for her own weakness, bit her lip until it bled and forced herself to just breathe. After a few minutes, most evidence of her crying had completely disappeared. It had only taken one spark of recognition. She’d recognized him as a client, back when she was nothing but a common whore, and he had recognized her too. His masochistic grin had torn her down in mere seconds. All this, for a man.

Lore straightened her back, put her chin up and her chest forward and, just like that, turned into the epitome of unshakable faith again. Sometimes it was that easy. She didn’t dare to breathe as she marched over the square, feeling countless eyes being drawn to her as she walked by. She was a sight to behold: clad in a pure, white dress and an excess of golden jewels. It was something she’d never get used to. Caught up in her own thoughts, she didn’t notice the man approaching her at first. It wasn’t until he spoke to her that she looked up. He asked if she was a Priestess of Sol and for a few seconds she was inclined to say no. She regained herself, putting a smile on her face. “What gave it away?” she replied, as if the answer wasn’t obvious. He looked intimidating: taller than her, covered in tattoos. Still, his expression nearly seemed friendly. He reminded her of someone she knew. Of a good man.

Effortlessly. If he had a purpose, a goal, it was so easy to hide the wicked part of himself behind a mask. For a moment, he could pretend as if he was an actual functioning member of society. But it was all deception. From a young age, he had learned to fake his emotions. Only for survival purposes. But now, he could use those skills to get what he wanted. And he wasn’t afraid to do so. Regardless of the consequences. Because in a way, he felt untouchable. His God would protect him, His loyal servant. Everything he was doing today, was justified by the urge to please Him. The woman he had chosen should feel honoured. She would be sacrificed, a gift to the Drowned God to ease the anger her sect had caused. She would suffer, and simultaneously it would send a message to her fellow priests. There was no place for Sol on this island.

For a second, it seemed like she didn’t trust him. Which was normal. Despite his effort to look as innocent as possible, his tattoos and bright amber eyes could still put someone off. But he kept his smile firmly in place, his shoulders lowered and his head slightly bent down. And she fell for it. A smile popped up on her face as well. “What gave it away?” She asked. He chuckled amused, shrugging lightly. ”Your brilliant appearance”, He joked back. After that, he became more serious again. Showtime. ”I hate to bother you, but I am worried about my little sister. She is very ill and I’m afraid my prayers won’t be enough to save her. I was wondering if you could pray with me. I’m hoping Sol will hear out one of his priestesses, just in case”, He said, a mixture of sadness and worry in his voice. Carefully practised, as he didn’t even have a little sister. But hopefully his sob story would be enough so she would follow him to a less crowded spot.

my wings don't spread like they used to

Loraelei didn’t falter when a stranger approached her. Not too long ago, she’d keep away from every single man that tried to get anywhere near her, but that had soon proved to be unrealistic thing to keep up. As a priestess of Sol, she needed to expand the faith, to lead the way into spirituality for both women and men. It had frightened her at first, but in due time she learned to accept it. The fact that men treated her completely differently nowadays helped too. Apparently, they had far more respect for priestesses than they showed towards courtesans. Who would’ve thought?

For a second, she held in her breath as an unknown man approached her. She put on her best poker face, which looked like a warm and comforting smile, although she wasn’t entirely sure if it was all that convincing. The man in front of her chuckled when she asked him how he’d recognized her. It wasn’t exactly a mystery. Then, the actual reason he approached her ensued. Apparently his sister had fallen ill and he was in search of a priestess to help communicate his prayers to Sol. Her very first instinct was to turn around now and run for the hills, but she then reminded herself that she was a priestess of Sol now. She had a duty to fulfil. He slightly reminded her of Kaz somehow, one of the few men in her life who had been kind to her. Because of the resemblance, she was willing to look past his intimidating exterior, although that would soon prove to be a mistake. “Of course,” she then replied, with a small nod. “It’d be an honour to help you reach our god.” She wasn’t entirely sure if her doubt was audible in her tone. “Please, lead the way.”

This part of the plan was the most tricky one. If she didn’t cooperate, he would have to find another way to get her to the beach. Or maybe just find another priest and try again. But he had to move quickly. If word got around, which happened quite fast on a small island like this, the whole plan could fail. And he couldn’t really deal with failure. At the same time he trusted in his own skills enough to feel confident that it would work. She seemed a bit cautious, but he had expected that. He also didn’t blame her. He knew the prejudices his appearance could cause. So he had come up with a sad story about his ‘little sister’ being ill and in need of prayers to cure her. Who would turn down the rogation of a concerned older brother?

The priestess sure didn’t. “Of course,” She nodded. The young man smiled thankfully. “It’d be an honour to help you reach our god.” She continued. “Please, lead the way.” Romeo hid his satisfaction by turning around and pointing at one of the streets that lead to a more quiet part of the town. The people that lived there were mostly traders. They were not poor, but not extremely rich either. And above all, working during the day. So there wouldn’t be much witnesses, if any at all. ”Thank you. I’m sure He will be pleased with your kindness and help”, He said, actually meaning his one true God instead of her fake one. Cause He would be very pleased with her selfless sacrifice for sure.

When he was pretty sure no one was watching, he lead her to a back ally. ”I’ll let you in through the back door”, He said, the innocent little smile still around his lips. But as soon as she stepped out of sight from the main street, he grabbed her upper arm and turned her body around so she was facing away from him. He placed himself behind her and wrapped his arm around her throat. That way, he shut off her air pipe. He wouldn’t suffocate her completely. She only had to lose consciousness.. ”Don’t resist, let it happen”, He whispered in her ear, the blonde locks tickling the side of his face softly. She was really pretty. The ideal sacrifice..

my wings don't spread like they used to

Every fibre of her being screamed at her to leave. It felt unnatural for her to trust a man so blindly, but she had to. The minute she decided to dedicate her life to Sol, she signed up for things like this. It was her duty to help Sol’s followers communicate with him, even if those followers were total strangers to her. She told herself to have faith, like she was told at church so many times. To believe that her god would look out for her, that he’d keep her safe. Still, she couldn’t help feeling like she was making a big mistake.

A grateful smile appeared on his face as she let him know she’d come with him to pray. Her heart was beating quickly as he turned around, pointing towards one of the streets. She’d lived on Sunfall for a while now and was completely aware of the layout of the island. The district he was pointing towards was mostly inhabited by traders. Not something she would worry about, except for the fact that most merchants were occupying the market right now, so the district itself would be rather quiet. He thanked her and she forced a smile, nodding at him. Cursing herself for being so naïve, she followed him down to a back alley. At this point, she was already sure of what was going to happen. He told her he’d let her in through the back door and Lore let out a shaky breath. Before she knew it, he’d taken hold of her, causing her to release a high-pitched yelp. His arm constricted around her throat, making her gasp for air in a panic. In a desperate attempt to get free, she pressed her nails into the skin of his arm as hard as she possibly could, trying to ignore the immense amount of fear she was feeling. The words he whispered into her ear sent shivers running down her spine, and slowly but steadily, she began to feel a painful burning in her lungs. Lore kept scratching and clawing at him, to no avail. She softly whimpered a few words that resembled 'let me go' as she felt her legs give out, leaning into him for support. A faint ache in her head was the last thing she felt as her vision went black, a single tear finding its way down her cheek.

The vibes coming from her, were worrying him a bit. It didn’t seem as if she was too enthusiastic to come along with him. But at the same time, she couldn’t turn him down either. It was the perfect way to lure a priestess, involve her faith and she would be obliged to assist him. Which was amusing to him. His God would never make him do anything he didn’t want to. He had freedom and was allowed to make his own decisions. That was exactly the reason why he hated her god so much. Her faith was only a system of oppression, took away the free will of the people and he could not deal with that well. Her faith in her god was her downfall. She had to come with him, so he took advantage of that.

It was almost too easy. From the moment they were alone, out of sight, he seized the opportunity. Of course she screamed, but no one was around to hear her and eventually it meant she would be out of breath sooner. In an attempt to break free, she clawed at his arms, but he was used to pain enough to ignore it for now. When she finally gave in to the darkness that was coming for her, he supported her body and put her down gently on the ground. He inspected the markings on his arm, which were bleeding lightly. He wiped away the blood with his shirt and turned towards the priestess again.

With little effort he picked her up, carrying her through the last little streets until he was outside of the city. It took him a bit longer to get to the beach, as he had to carry her, but eventually they reached the altar again. He positioned her in the middle of the four wooden poles he had dug in earlier. With ropes he had taken with him from the ship, he tied her hands and feet tightly to the poles. When he was done, he looked at the sea, checking the tide. It was a slow process, but eventually the water would reach her. It seemed as if He was eager to come and get His offering, as the waves were growing more violent. A smirk settled on his face. Hopefully the priestess would wake up in time to attend her own drowning.

my wings don't spread like they used to

Lore seemed to be continuously torn between adhering to her god and her ingrained instinct to avoid every male thing on the planet. If she wanted to enlighten herself, to truly become something good and holy in the eyes of Sol, she would have to spread his word, regardless of her own fears and doubts. However, every single moment in her life had taught her to beware of men, because they carried around dark intentions most of the time. The moment she followed him down into the alley, she knew something bad was about to happen. It wouldn’t be the first time a man had used her against her will, but this time, she didn’t expect to make it out alive.

Her hands were slightly trembling the very second before he grabbed her. She yelled, knowing no one was around to hear her. Nobody would come and help her. She was well and truly on her own, making her very easy prey. Somehow, it hurt her pride to know that it would be indeed that simple to end her life. She thrashed around a little, trying to hurt him with her nails in every way she could. Her final thought was a cry for help to any god that was listening, before everything went dark.

Lore had no recollection of how he lifted her up and carried her to the beach. She awoke with a slight pounding in the back of her head. A dull, almost hangover-like ache. She could hear the faint breeze of the ocean, the rushing of the waves. At that point, she wasn’t all that confused by the fact she was suddenly on the beach yet. She opened her eyes, blinking a few times as she fixated her gaze on the bright blue sky. The next things she noticed were the scratching of sand against her skin, and the pulling at her wrists and ankles. The latter managed to drive up her heartbeat a little, and as she tried to move her limbs, she noticed she couldn’t. The ropes that were tied around her dug their way into her skin, but the pain was far from her only concern. She was tied down, and the tide was slowly moving in to get her. Her eyes looked for something, anything, and found the man she recognized from before. Nothing was left of the friendly expression that had been there before. Her eyes widened, looking at him in horror. “Untie me!” she yelled at him, not even trying to hide the desperate tone in her voice. “Now!” She started struggling to get free, but it had no use. He’d attached her to the poles tightly and her fighting back only made the rope carve into her skin even deeper. Tears started to well up in her eyes once more, as she started screaming for help at the top of her lungs. There had to be someone around who could help her. There had to be someone.

While she was unconscious, he took the time to walk back to the brush that bordered the beach. Beneath some trees, hidden behind a few bushes, he had left behind a chest. The chest was filled with precious gemstones and golden coins. With a grunt he lifted the heavy object and carried it back to the altar. He positioned the chest above her head, only a meter away. Carefully he opened it and caressed the contents one by one. He had looted these items and deemed them worthy to serve as an offering. Something extra to please Him. It was a way for the ironborn to pay for safe travels when they went out to sea. It had never failed him, his God had never failed him. It only made it more obvious how the Drowned God was so much more powerful than her Sol. Her god couldn’t rescue her, and He Who Dwells Beneath the Waves would take what now belonged to him.

When he was done, he closed the chest again and got up. He walked towards the water a bit, facing the horizon. He closed his eyes, taking in the salt scent of the sea and hearing the waves crash on the shore. After a few seconds, he turned back towards the priestess, who was now conveniently awake. The look of sheer terror on her face only amused him. “Untie me!” She yelled. “Now!” The young man couldn’t keep back his laughter now. When she started screaming for help, he let her. He watched as she struggled to free herself, noticing the rough ropes cutting her skin. She would soon realise screaming wouldn’t help her one bit. There was no one on the beach and the wind wouldn’t carry her voice very far.

But it was a little annoying. Couldn’t she just drown in silence? With his amber gaze fixed on her face, he knelt down next to her. ”No one is coming to help you”, He said in between her screams. ”No one can hear you”, He continued. He turned his head upwards, to the sky, where the sun was still shining bright. ”Maybe he can save you. Why don’t you start praying to him instead?” He said with a mocking tone in his voice. ”Ask him, beg him, see if he can stop my God from taking you”, He proposed, a little challenge for her. Because he already knew the outcome of this. Sol was no match for the Drowned God, he couldn’t stop the tide from coming in. And the priestess.. She would drown.

my wings don't spread like they used to

Panic struck as soon as she realized she couldn’t move. At first, she moved around a little, testing the strength of the ropes that were tied ever so tightly around her wrists and ankles. In a matter of seconds, however, she found that they were not going to give. Whoever he was, he’d done this before. Pieces of what happened started coming back to her. She could recall his excuse to take her away from the town square, to the back alley where he’d suffocated her. From there on, everything was pitch black. She had no idea how much time had passed since then.

What she could tell, was that he hadn’t used her like other man had. Besides the throbbing headache from the lack of oxygen and the rope digging into her wrists, her body felt fine. It was only a small comfort, though, since she was completely sure he was going to hurt her in other ways. It took her a while to notice the chest that was inches above her head, although at this point, she couldn’t care less about what was inside of it. All she wanted was for someone to come around and get her out of here. She wasn’t going to just give up, but all she could do at this point was scream. So, that’s what she did.

Lore shut her mouth as soon as he knelt beside her, afraid he was going to hit her for making so much noise. She looked him straight in the eyes as he told her that no one was going to come for her. A slight frown appeared on her face when he suggested she pray to her god instead, in the hopes of Sol saving her. He sounded sceptical, mocking even. At that second, she knew what this was about. She was going to die as a favour for some pagan sea-god. Another tear ran down the side of her face as she looked at him. No god was going to save her now. “You’re here. You can hear me,” she said, her voice trembling. “Please, don’t do this. I beg you.” With every word, her sobbing became more uncontrollable. “I’ll do anything, I swear,” she whined, pulling at the ropes a little. Her faith was nowhere near unshakable yet. Sol wasn’t going to get her out of this, and neither was whatever god the man next to her was speaking of. Her only chance of survival came in the shape of the very person kneeling next to her.

It was entertaining to watch her try to break free from the ropes that tied her down. The ropes were some of the toughest around, as they were meant to serve on a ship. Water, salt and sun had unleashed their forces upon it and they were still pretty decent. The knots he had used, were typical sailor knots. If they could withstand the elements and the movements of the ship, she wouldn’t be able to undo them no matter how hard she tried. The ropes were also really rough, which meant that she was only cutting her own skin as she struggled to get away. When she started screaming, it only added to his enjoyment. This was exactly what he wanted to achieve. That’s why he had chosen this method of sacrificing her. It would have been easier to just drown her while she was still unconscious. Just hold her under water until she stopped breathing. But this.. This was so much more fun.

The tide was creeping in slowly, but steadily. It wouldn’t take long until it would reach her feet. He shifted his attention back to her when she started screaming for help. He knelt down next to her, confident that she wouldn’t be able to hurt him in any way now as she was safely secured to the poles. He started talking, revealing the real reason why she was in this position. And she finally realised it. “You’re here. You can hear me,” She said, her voice shaking with emotions. “Please, don’t do this. I beg you.” She sobbed. “I’ll do anything, I swear,” She tried to convince him of letting her go. Romeo just stared at her, his intense gaze following the single tear that was finding its way down her cheek.

”This quarrel is not between you and me. Your so called god has made mine very angry. It's His right to take you, as your worship and devotion is with the wrong one”, He said, his voice soft yet firm. He was only telling the truth. She had made a mistake, chose the wrong god and now she would have to pay. ”Don’t worry though. You’ll be the first, but you won’t be the only one. Sunfall will be cleansed of the scum that is your cult. He will come for your Sol Invictus, the other priests, your cathedral.. It will all be wiped away by the same waves that will put you out of your misery”, He continued, and he smiled at her. Genuinely. Because he honestly believed he was doing her a favour. She would be free, taken with the Drowned God to live in his watery halls for eternity. As he was done speaking, the first small waves rolled far enough to reach her feet. Soon, her whole body would be swallowed whole by the tide, and this would all be over.

A sirens song

"My heart is pierced by Cupid, I disdain all glittering gold,
There is nothing can console me but my jolly sailor bold."

my wings don't spread like they used to

Realization started to hit her: she wasn’t going to get out. There was no way she could escape the ropes that were tied around her wrists and ankles, and she was sure he was not going to let her go. Her heart seemed like it was about to pound out of her chest. It couldn’t end like this, not after she was finally freed of every man that ever held her down. As much as she didn’t want to show any weakness, tears started welling up in her eyes. Her muscles were burning from pulling at her restraints, but they simply didn’t give. She was stuck, and no one was coming from her.

As a last resort, she opened her mouth and begged. Begged for him to help her, hoping to reach the tiniest inch of humanity he might have left. Maybe she could convince him to let her go, so she promised to give him anything, anything, if he’d only let her go. His gaze was strongly fixated on her, and as soon as he started speaking, she knew it was over. She felt a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach as he argued that Sol had angered his god. He then continued by telling her she wouldn’t be the last one: he was planning to do this to all her sisters and brothers. Lore softly shook her head while she looked up at him. “You can’t,” she softly whined. “Please.” Another tear found its way down her cheek when he smiled. Arguing with him had no use, he was a religious fanatic, like everyone had expected her to be. She was going to die because she believed in the wrong god.

A quiet sobbing stemmed from her throat as she felt the first wave reach her feet. It managed to light a new fire inside her, and she raised her voice, screaming for help once again. She tried pulling her feet back up, as if those few inches would be able to save her. Her throat started to hurt from all the yelling, but someone hearing her was her only chance of survival right now.

Her words had zero influence on him. His emotions were unreachable, his heart was made out of stone. She had called this upon herself. He was merely doing what every ironborn was supposed to. Cleanse the islands from unbelievers and give them back to their rightful owner. The Drowned God had ruled these islands for centuries and now it was time to go back to that glorious era. The islands would prosper again, in the right way. Not by trading or worshipping false gods. In his mind he was doing what his God expected from him. So she could beg, cry, fight and scream all she wanted. It wouldn’t change a damn thing. While she was screaming, Romeo got up again and walked back to the chest. He carefully took out some large gemstones and a golden necklace. With the items in his hand, he knelt down in the waves that washed ashore.

The salt water drenched his clothing, but he felt close to Him. ”What is dead may never die, but rises again, harder and stronger”, He whispered, a prayer barely audible above the crashing waves. He put down the jewellery in the wash so He could take them. It wouldn’t be long until the water would lift them up and drag them back to sea. After that, he got up and turned around to the priestess. She was still fearing for her life.. And that was exactly what he had wished to accomplish. The young man pulled a knife and held on to the rope that tied her right hand to the pole. With a quick slash he cut it right through, but he made sure she couldn’t move her arm just yet. He put the blade in her hand, amber eyes trailing back to her gaze.

”I want you to tell them”, He instructed. Leaving her here would send a message, but not the one he wanted to spread around the island. He wanted the fear to take over, and she was the only one able to testify the power of the Drowned God. Surely He wouldn’t be happy to be denied this sacrifice, but the gold and gemstones would keep Him satisfied for a while longer. When he let go of the rope, she could move her arm to cut the remaining restraints before the water would reach her head. And by that time he would of course be long gone.

my wings don't spread like they used to

If there was anyone on earth who was capable of reachin him, it wasn’t her. The way he was looking at her, she wasn’t even sure if he processed her pleas for mercy at all. He was cold-hearted, if not heartless, and with that realization her final hope of escaping slowly but surely died. He was a religious fanatic, a maniac devoted to nothing an no one except his god, and he was going to let her drown in favour of his god. A gift clad in white, decorated with golden jewellery that was ever so meaningless now. Sol was going to let her die.

As she screamed again, he stood up. Her gaze didn’t follow him this time around, as she deemed it useless to keep an eye on him. Whatever he was doing, he wasn’t going to make her situation any worse. She had hit rock bottom already. Her cries for help slowly started sounding more like high-pitched sobs as the salt water started touching the soles of her feet. Wet traces of tears stained the skin on her cheeks. It couldn’t end like this. She closed her eyes, mentally praying to whoever was willing to listen. And just at that moment, the man came back, cutting through the ropes that were holding down her right arm. She looked up at him with a mixture of shock and confusion. Was he letting her go? Her lower lip trembled as he put the blade in her hand, not understanding what was happening until he said those words.

“I want you to tell them.”

Lore kept staring up at him for a few seconds, trying to get hold of her own breathing. She knew what he meant. Knew exactly what he meant. And she’d have refused, if it hadn’t been the mercy of his God that had saved her life just now. For a second, she grasped the blade a little tighter. There was no way she would overpower him, so she scraped her throat, speaking with a voice hoarse from screaming. “Who is He?” she quietly asked. She knew he was speaking of a God, just not which one. As a former courtesan, she wasn’t exactly educated on matters of the faith. Still, she needed to know the name of the One who had saved her.
