SECRETS DONT SLEEP
'till they're took to the grave

The dull sound of his shovel hitting the dirt was numbing his mind. It was a rhythmic noise, so he kind of focused on that. Anything that helped to get his mind off of what he was actually doing. The house had a big backyard, which was now a substitute for a mass grave. Four freshly dug graves right next to each other were the newest decorations of Kaz’ garden. Number five was on its way. The baby vampire kept dropping bodies, and it was his responsibility to give them at least a last place to rest in peace. Luckily he couldn’t actually throw up. His stomach was feeling weird all throughout his activities.

The sound of the back door opening shortly distracted him from his work. He saw Allison coming outside. He had no idea why, but he didn’t mind either. She tolerated him because he was helping Kaz and he tolerated her because she loved his brother. At least she could get through to him, unlike himself. If he could only stop killing the blood dolls he brought home.. Mort turned his attention back to what he was doing. Number five. And it certainly wouldn’t be the last.

Kaz had sucked all the life out of her. Not literally. No, he had kept his fangs away from her. It had been a struggle to deal with all of this, but she had kept her distance from the brothers when it was time to feed. Spent her time downstairs getting some food ready for herself, or just went out for a walk. She wanted nothing to do with any of that, had told them that she was here to help with the mental burden. Whenever it came to the feeding, it was up to Mort to fix what went wrong. He turned Kaz into a vampire. She was only here to support.

Yet, it was tiring. Watching Kaz become the monster she never thought he would actually be… hurt. She had to put all her values to the side to look him in the eye and smile. She knew that he was still the same man she knew and loved and she hoped that everything would work out, that one day they would go back to the troubled relationship they had. Though she knew that this could only happen if she managed to find a cure, which was why she had spent most of her days with her nose in the books. A pile of books had taken over one room. Only about twelve, but still. A decent pile.

Today she had decided to take her research outside. Mort was not her friend. She still felt hostility towards what he had done. The suffering he had caused. But, she also accepted him. He cared for the man she loved and he had made sure that she could spend time with him. Even if it was not what it once was. For how much longer could this go on? If she didn’t find a cure within years, she would have to let him go. She was not planning on watching him stay the same as she grew old… no way.

The blonde sat down in the sun, putting a book on her lap and fixing her gaze on Mort. “Were you the same?” she asked him. “Were you the monster I’ve seen when you became a vampire?” Her voice sounded… worried, almost. If Mort hadn’t been like that, was it just Kaz?

SECRETS DONT SLEEP
'till they're took to the grave

It was so hard to stand here, in the middle of the little graveyard he had been expanding over the last week. He had taken these people here, knowing he was leading them to slaughter. His fledgling discarded their lives like it didn’t mean anything. He was a killer, a murderer. A monster. One he created. Of course he hadn’t expected it to go all smooth. But this, this was the entire opposite of smooth. On top of that, he had Allison judging his every move all the time. Kind of exhausting, even though he couldn’t get tired. The vampire was restless, constantly overthinking what had happened and worrying about how he had to deal with this.

While he was digging, Allison joined him in the garden. She had been reading books all week, and he hadn’t really asked what it all was about. He had more important things to do. Like making sure Kaz didn’t sink his fangs in her neck. In silence he continued, until she asked him a question. The vampire stopped digging, resting his hands on the shovel while he looked at her with soft blue eyes. ”No, I was not”, He finally said after a short moment of considering the answers. ”He killed more just this week than I did in my entire existence”, He continued. He looked at the graves again. ”But I’ve never been a violent person, I guess”, He then shrugged. Maybe it was just in Kaz’ nature to kill. Maybe the true monster had been inside him all along.

Allison had barely spoken to Mort, except for the times she had lost her patience. She told him that this was all on him, that it was his problem to solve. Harsh? Maybe. Sadly for Mort, it was the way she was brought up. She had always had the eyes of Giovanni on her back, judging her every move. Her every mistake would be punished, as if the consequences weren’t bad enough themselves. During all of this, she had kept her back straight, had kept her eyes on the goal. Kaz had changed this, had set her up to the man who had been her everything. He had saved her, yet doomed her. And now she was sitting here, making sure that the problems she couldn’t solve, were solved by someone else. Even if it would take his mental health.

At the same time, she didn’t hate him. Maybe the woman just needed to be shown different ways, or perhaps it was already too late for that. After a week of silence, she had decided to sit down with him, asking him about his experiences. He told her that he had not killed much, that he was not a violent person. Allison smiled. “Did he ever tell you anything about us?” she asked, carefully. “About how we met?” A story relevant to the current situation.

It was very clear how Allison thought about his kind. She didn’t even try to hide it. He had seen the same hate in her eyes as he had seen when Kaz had found out what he had done to him. He couldn’t blame her. What he had done, was unforgivable. Because he had done it without the other’s consent. He had taken away his only chance of ending his suffering. There was no turning back. Somehow they still were a team. Allison tried to keep the fledgling happy, while he helped him to feed and control the monster. Though that last part seemed to be very difficult.

When the blonde appeared in the garden, Mort expected another admonition. Had he done something wrong again? Probably. If he had learned one thing, it was that the girl was a perfectionist. Surprisingly, it appeared that she wanted to have an actual conversation with him. Mort didn’t trust it entirely, but she had made him curious nonetheless. ”No, we didn’t have much time when we first met. He had to leave for Valyria”, He admitted. It had been brought up shortly, the subject, her. But nothing more than how their relationship was a bit complicated.

I lead an organisation whose original purpose is to exterminate vampires and werewolves, give power back to where it belongs: the people.” Perhaps not the best place to start, but Allison was not feeling like tiptoeing around the truth. “My boss was convinced that knowledge is power. To gain true control over humanity, you need to understand it. Where does order come from? Where does chaos stand? Where does magic come from and how can we control it?” A smile appeared on her face as her gaze was fixed on the book, but her mind was somewhere else. “Magic is a strong thing and my parents were actually familiar with yours. Through… I don’t know. Business, perhaps?” she went on.

Anyhow, long story short, I learned of his magics when I was young. I finally walked up to him and forced him to learn to control them,” she explained, thinking back to their meeting. “It was clear that his emotions were the problem. He had trouble controlling them. Once that became easier, he learned to control his demons.” Finally, her gaze moved to Mort again. “He did not accept my help straight away either.” Though perhaps that had different reasons, she hoped it would give the vampire some confidence.

And thus he learned the story of how his brother had met the love of his life. He tried to keep an open mind to what she was saying. Of course he didn’t like the part where she told the goal to destroy all vampires and werewolves. He had thought it had been a criminal organisation. Piracy, thievery, what not. Now he could understand where the hate came from. And why she made an exception for Kaz. She had been thought to hate, but her love for his brother was stronger. In the end of her story, he nodded. A small appreciative smile around his lips. ”Thank you for sharing”, He said, genuinely. Maybe it wouldn’t interest her, but her story had made him want to share his own experiences too.

”When we were kids, I have helped him control his magic numerous times. Not by forcing him, but by supporting him. I’m not the type to push my own will onto people”, Mort said, shaking his head softly. No. He was soft and he knew it. ”I held his hand when the demons were crawling around his crib”, He continued, recalling multiple occasions at once. ”But he is a grown man now. He has seen things I’m not aware of. He is..”, The vampire bit his lip gently. ”Different”, He concluded, using Kaz’ own words. ”And then I don’t mean the vampire thing. I know how to control the monster”, He paused for just a second, meeting her gaze with sad blue eyes. ”I just don’t know how to control him anymore.”

Mort explained how he had helped Kaz back in the day. How he had been the one to help him battle his monsters. He had started by saying that he was not the type to push his own will onto people, which made her raise her brow. “Hmhm,” she disagreed, softly. After all, he had forced Kaz into this life. He was no longer allowed to say that he was not that kind of person. He was. If it came to it.

Allison shook her head when Mort said that he didn’t know how to control him. Kaz. Not the vampire. “You can’t,” she told him, smiling. “I’ve tried. Believe me, I have,” she then said. She bit her lip for a second, pulling her hand through her hair as she seemed to do way too often. “But he’s not… He’s not the monster we see now,” she spoke, shaking her head. “He’s confused. Angry. Sad. I just feel like I’m completely failing at getting through to him,” she then told him, her voice ending up in nothing but a soft whisper. The one great thing about vampires was that they would still hear you. After all, she was ashamed. Shouldn’t she be the one to get through to him? Why couldn’t she?

I'm not a saint, but I could be if I tried, Lord knows I don't learn from my mistakes

The past few days Kaz had been hiding in his room. He had been intolerable to Mort. He ignored him most of the time or was just plain rude. The affection that he had showed when they had been kids or during the time they had met a few weeks back, seemed to have completely vanished. Kaz hated him and he clearly was showing it. Though, every time Mort came home with a blood doll, Kaz had accepted. Simply because he couldn't refuse and his hunger for blood and for more, was always greater than his hate for his brother. But he didn't stop when Mort told him to. No, Kaz drank until the blood doll was depleted and was of no more use to him. What other purpose did they serve? It was better to end their suffering than to keep them in this world any longer. Someone in the family clearly hadn't learned that.

But today was different. He couldn't just stay in bed any longer, staring at the ceiling, cursing his brother, cursing himself. It was starting to bore him, yet it took him hours until the sun was already burning in the sky, to actually get out of bed. He was still baffled by the fact that the wound in his neck had healed and had left no scars. It was unnatural, but then again, so was he. Kaz wasn't really sure what to do, it was day outside and he was still scared of going outside and expose himself in the sunlight. But he wasn't really in for a conversation with Mort. Or Allison for that matter. She was an odd one in this situation. Kaz still wasn't sure if he could trust her or not. After all, he clearly knew how she thought about vampires, but she dared to visit hem when he had just been turned, when he had been dangerous. But wasn't it the same now? Wasn't he still not in control of his powers, still not understanding the consequences of his actions?

With a face that said anything but happiness, Kaz made it downstairs. Barefooted and messy hair, like he just had woken up. The plan was to get to the kitchen, grab a bottle of whatever alcohol there was and avoid any conversation. Kaz wasn't even sure if he could get drunk anymore and there was only one way to find out. But, he made it halfway through the living room before he heard them. Their voices, soft but hearable, drifting from outside. It made him stop dead in his tracks. They were talking about him. Of course they were. A little eager, Kaz stepped towards the open door leading into the garden. Even from here he could see Mort digging graves. Graves for people Kaz had killed in his hunger and lust for blood. It didn't hurt him as he watched his brother dig. The thought that Kaz had killed people just for his own good didn't seem to enter his mind. He simply was numb for it.

Allisons voice. For some reason it always soothed him when he heard her. It made him feel a little calmer and safe. But lately, it mostly confused him. He wanted to feel happy with her, but he just couldn't, something was blocking it. Kaz leaned against the doorframe, silently listening to their conversation. The shadows already started to stretch across the grass field, but he didn't dare coming closer. It was pathetic how scared he had become of the outside world.
He titled his head a little, heard their words and frowned. Most of them bounced back and didn't seem to mean anything to him. But getting through him? Were they so desperate to control him, now, in this state? Kaz crossed his arms and narrowed his eyes. Let them talk, Mort would get what he deserved eventually. And Allison? She was safe, as long as he was safe with her.

SECRETS DONT SLEEP

Apparently there was no use in trying to control Kaz anymore. It was hard to accept. He had always felt like he could be useful to his brother. It was the only reason he had allowed Edmund to turn him. Because he believed his brother was still out there, waiting. Waiting for him to return and continue their lives together. That was the illusion he had believed. Fact was that the other didn’t need him, at all. That he had always felt like he had been a burden, someone who held him back, someone who was selfish and only wanted to make the situation better for himself. The other had moved on, clearly. Thinking he was dead, which was true, in its own twisted way.

”I know exactly how he feels”, Mort replied to Allison. She didn’t have to tell him how it felt to be a newborn vampire. But she knew Kaz better than he did. ”I thought you were, honestly. I don’t mean to be rude but I’m surprised he hasn’t attacked you yet”, He continued. The elder vampire grabbed a better hold of the shovel and decided to start digging again. This conversation was going nowhere. If she wanted to insult him again, like she had been doing over the past week, she could say all she wanted. In the end, he was just doing his duty as a sire. Cause apparently.. He was not Kaz’ brother anymore. That privilege had been taken from him the moment he had decided to turn him into one of his kind.

Sorry,” Allison said when Mort replied that he knew how he felt. “But I doubt you do.” She smiled, looking at the guy. “You made the choice yourself, did you not?” While he would have been confused, he must have also been willing to accept help. “But you understand his situation better than I can, so I’m glad you’re here. Honestly.” She was harsh on him. She knew it. But, did he not deserve every piece of it?

Mort said that he thought she was. That he was surprised he hadn’t attacked her yet. A faint smile on her face again, as she tapped on the book with her pencil. “I am too,” she admitted. “But maybe that’s what it will take for him to finally open up to you again,” she softly went on. Maybe that was how it had to go. Wasn’t that exactly how Giovanni had seen the world too? To reach order, you had to reach absolute chaos. Maybe that was the only way for Kaz to snap back into it… The woman bit her lip, shook her head. Don’t think about that now.

I'm not a saint, but I could be if I tried, Lord knows I don't learn from my mistakes

Maybe being a vampire did have his perks. No more heartbeat for Mort to hear, no loud sounds to alert Allison. No, instead he could just stay where he was, listen to them from a distance where a normal human being wouldn't even pick up the conversation and contemplate. Because that was all he had been doing this past days. Contemplating what to do next. Besides drinking from the blooddolls and ''accidentally'' killing them, he hadn't much to do. And time was running short. One day or another he had to get back to Valyria. He had made a deal with another devil, a whole different one a long time ago. He couldn't break that deal.

The way they were talking about him, like he was some sort of lost puppy in desperate need of guidance. It irritated him. It irritated him enough that he dared to set a step outside. The grass felt weird under his feet, just like everything had felt when he had first woken up after being turned. It fel different, more intense. For a moment he stood still, admired the feeling, before taking another step, slower this time, while still listening to the conversation taking place.

He put his hands in his pockets and stopped walking when he was in talking distance from the two. He narrowed his eyes, obviously not very happy with their words. ''What a wonderful day to gossip, isn't it?'' He remarked, his eyes falling on Mort, the shovel and then the grave. Kaz didn't even care for who it was. All he cared for right now, was for them to stop thinking he was so lost and hurt about all this. In fact, he was, but no way in hell he was going to admit that.

SECRETS DONT SLEEP
'till they're took to the grave

Her damned smile all the time. The vampire bit his tongue, in an attempt to control his anger. If he could just smack this shovel across her face, he would wipe away that innocent look in no-time.. Instead, he pushed it deeply into the soil, lifting yet another pile of dirt away from the grave he was digging. ”I did make that choice, and you know why?” He mumbled through clenched jaws. ”Because I knew Kaspian was still out here somewhere. I could feel it in my heart. I knew he was alive”, He continued, speaking his brother’s full name by accident. ”I was in debt with the one that is now my sire. It was either die or get turned”, He said, avoiding her gaze while he looked down at the grave.

”If I had chosen death, I wouldn’t have been able to come look for him”, He whispered. All he had ever wanted, was to be with his brother. To spend his life by his side, because he loved him so much he was the only thing that really mattered to him. The vampire pulled his hand through his hair, after which he started digging more aggressively. As if it was all the fault of the soil beneath him. Her words made him look up to her once more. ”I won’t let him. I don’t care if he hates me. I want him to be happy”, He said, with a determination in his voice that almost surprised him. If she was the one Kaz wanted to spend his life with.. Then he would support him in his decision. And make sure he wouldn’t kill the one he cared for most.

Suddenly, his enhanced hearing picked up a footstep. The elder ignored it for now, he just kept digging. Now he would have to deal with two people giving him hell for the choice he had made. A choice that had given them both more time with each other, but they failed to see that. Or they wouldn’t admit it to themselves, and to him. It hurt him more than anything. ''What a wonderful day to gossip, isn't it?'' Kaz said when he was close enough for the both of them to hear it. Mort kept his mouth closed, didn’t react to the other. Just keep digging.

Mort explained to her the reason that he had become a vampire. She wasn’t even surprised. He seemed to do everything he did out of love for his brother, whether his choice was a good one or not. She nodded. “You were right,” she told him. “He was the happiest I’ve seen him when he told me about you,” she went on. “And I hope he’ll forgive you. Because I miss seeing him smile more than anything.” Seeing Kaz smile was a rarity already. But, he did it. Like, once a day at max, but he still did it. The smile on his face when he told her about his brother had been new, though. Sheer happiness. She would give the world to see him like that again.

And it seemed like Mort agreed. He told her that he would not let him hurt her, because he wanted his brother to be happy. Allison nodded, sighed once. “I sure hope it will be enough,” she told him. Were the two of them able to get through the guy? Would he ever go back to the man she loved so much? It was a difficult question. And maybe she would not long enough to get the answer.

‘What a wonderful day to gossip, isn’t it?’ The blonde looked up to see Kaz. She sighed. “Kaz. Come sit with me, please?” she tried. She knew he might be too stubborn to, but at least it was worth a try. It did not have to be close if he didn’t want to, but she would love for him to just… be here. Be part of this little moment. Even though the moment was absolute shit.

I'm not a saint, but I could be if I tried, Lord knows I don't learn from my mistakes

Of course Mort ignored him. But it was so easy to provoke him. Kaz remembered the few days back, when he spoke those hateful words, when he made Mort walk away. He could still see the hurt that he had created in the eyes of his brother. For a moment it didn't bother him, but then he felt a sting in his chest. Was it guilt? Anger? Maybe even sadness. Kaz couldn't place it, but it wasn't happy feeling it. He wanted to hate his brother, not feel sorry.

The vampire shifted his eyes to Allison, narrowed them and then sighed. ''You're in the sun.'' He stated dryly before walking slowly towards her. He didn't want to be too close. It felt like it had been a day since he had a drink and the last thing he wanted was lusting after Allisons blood. So, he moved himself towards the tree, closer to Mort but close enough to Allison as well.

Kaz looked at his hands and picked at a cuticle. No gloves, no cane. It was like there was a different person impersonating him. That's how it felt. ''How's the digging going?'' He eventually asked without much care. He had heard what Mort had said and he didn't know what to do with those words. The fact that his brother still loved him, still cared for him. After all this. Kaz almost wanted to apologize for what he had said. Almost.
