Pretend it's home

Surrounded, but always alone
So pick a place, pretend it's home
The higher you climb, the further you fall. But don't be ashamed of wanting it all. Cause the view from the top is beautiful but fleeting. Looks can be deceiving
If she had been a dog, the drool would have been everywhere. Sadly, she was not. She was human. And not only that, she was the new Grand Duchess. Which meant that this garden was all hers. If possible, her eyes would have turned into hearts like the emoji. She could feel the excitement in her body, like a child when they were taken to an amusement park for the first time. Like someone from Falkreath who saw the beach for the first time in their lives. This was the first time in her life that she was actually able to grow the herbs she needed. They would have to add some and get rid of some that were of no value to her, but it was an amazing start. There were ingredients found in this castle that had been hard to acquire before. It was like a dream come true and for a moment, just a moment, she forgot all the worries she had before.
Yet, she knew that she had limited time to study everything in here. There was still so much more to do in and around the castle, which was exactly why she had decided to do two things at once. She had asked for Mort to meet her in the garden, as she expected him to still have many questions regarding everything that had happened in the past days. In the meanwhile, she kneeled down next to a plant and took a leaf in her hand, taking in the scent of it. She loved this place.

AFTER EVERYTHING I WITNESSED
after all of these decisions
The gardens. Those wouldn’t be too hard to find, would they? If Allison would have told him to meet her in any other specific room, he would probably be looking for that all night and day, honestly. This castle was huge. It made him wonder why someone would need so many rooms in the first place. Some of them had to be empty, right? No one would use all the rooms that were available, unless there were a lot of guests staying over. Guests like himself, who were considered closer to the owners of this place. He had seen some of the other people that had attended the party two nights ago wander around the castle as well. Most of them were here on invitation of Allison herself, as Kaz wasn’t really the type to make a lot of friends. Or so he had been told.
It didn’t really come as a surprise. He had seen how they were together, how they interacted with each other and the people around them. She was way more accessible than he was. Yet, he was his brother, and he loved him dearly. That’s why he trusted Allison as well. And he was glad the other wanted to give him a chance too. Otherwise she wouldn’t have asked him to meet, right? He better not let her wait then. He couldn’t travel at vampire speed here, as there were servants and other people everywhere. So he eventually arrived in the garden, still in time, but she was already there. It wasn’t too hard to find her, kneeling next to a plant. He softly scraped his throat, to announce his presence, if she hadn’t noticed him yet.

It wasn’t uncommon for the woman to get overly excited over something others would barely pay attention to. Like plants, for example. Where someone else saw nothing but a useless piece of plant, with a scent that wasn’t exactly the sweetest, she saw a list of alchemic potions that she could make using this particular leaf, or its roots. It was a nice distraction from the worries and thoughts that had been clouding her mind and she decided that this place would be one to visit more often. Like the library, it was a good change of pace. One where she could take some time off, take a deep breath in and take in the calmth that the area had to offer. Feel at home in her own home, something that wasn’t quite possible in most of the castle.
The sound made her aware of her surroundings again and Allison looked up at the vampire, showing him a faint smile. Today was a good day. She had woken up in a good mood and she was trying to keep it that way, taking it as easy as possible. Which was why today was the perfect day to meet up with the man, who was now her brother in law. A strange thought and one she would need some time to get used to. She let go of the leaf and got up from her position, turning her body towards the man. “Hey Mort, ” she greeted him.

AFTER EVERYTHING I WITNESSED
after all of these decisions
Every time he spoke to Allison, he learned more facts about her. She was, as every human being, a very complex mixture of habits, interests and thoughts. Finding her next to a plant, holding one of the leaves gently, certainly surprised him. Yet another one of those little things he had no idea about. He wouldn’t have taken her for the gardening enthusiast she now appeared to be. Of course he was unaware of the thought process that was behind it, the whole alchemic frame of mind only she had access to. His perception of her slightly changed again, in a positive way. He remembered vividly how she had laughed when he had mentioned his excitement about ducks, yet here she was, showing interest in nature as well.
It also reminded him of the fact he had left her all alone with Kaz, when he had left for Vanaheim. Of course his mind had wandered to them from time to time, wondering if he had made a mistake. But she was alive and well, even married to his brother now. He was relieved and happy their relationship had taken such a turn. For a slight moment, he had feared that his return would have fucked up so much more than just the life of his brother alone. Like their life together, their relationship. Luckily all had turned out well. There was even a possibility of them getting along as well. Which wasn’t too weird, seeing Mort usually wasn’t the type to make much enemies. ”Allison”, He greeted back, a warm smile around his lips. ”I didn’t know you were into gardening”, He continued, a slight amused tone in his voice. He wasn’t judging, surely not, he was a nice guy and all. But it was kind of entertaining nonetheless.

Mort had the wrong idea about her excitement, causing the woman to chuckle, shaking her head carefully. “I am not here because I love gardening, ” she told him, the tone of her voice more amused than his had sounded. “All that you see here, are ingredients for our Alchemy, ” she explained calmly. The excitement wasn’t only clear from her voice. It was her whole body language, which showed how tired she was, yet so happy to be where she was right now. Her eyes seemed to light up as she looked around, as if she was in paradise. Almost as good as a library.
“But, more importantly, ” she started, shaking her head softly. “How have you been? You clearly needed the break from… well… us. ” She couldn’t help but laugh shamefully, pulling a hand through her hair as she tended to do when she felt uncomfortable. Now that everything had calmed down, she felt bad for how she treated the man. While she would never think his actions were the right ones, he was the reason she had Kaz by her side. And Kaz was the one thing bringing her happiness now, so she had to appreciate that.

AFTER EVERYTHING I WITNESSED
after all of these decisions
Apparently he had been wrong. She wasn’t here for the flowers, or to enjoy the garden, as he had expected. No, she was here for other purposes. Alchemy. He had joined her in the library of Brightwater Keep once, when she was looking for old books that might hold the cure for vampirism. He wondered if that was still her goal. Of course he would keep that question to himself. The last thing he wanted, was another sermon on how bad vampires were, what kind of monsters they were and how unnatural their existence was in the first place. If she still wanted to get rid of that curse, it would explain her enthusiasm. And the reason why she had taken an interest in this castle.
Mort decided not to get into the matter, rather answering to her second question. ”I still feel bad for leaving like that”, He mentioned first. Because it was true, after all. ”But yeah, it helped, a lot. And I hope it helped you two as well”, He continued. Because that had been the point, after all. Give them the time to figure out if they still wanted to be together, which obviously had turned out positive. In the meantime, he had straightened himself out as well. And he had a feeling his relationship with Kaz was more steady now too. Not as great as he wanted it to be, but it was the start of a process that would hopefully fix their bond as well.

Ever since she was a little girl, Alchemy had been one of her few joys in life. The one thing she could lose herself in completely, forgetting about her worries, doubts and fears. For years, it had been the only thing. With the exception of something trivial like a story here and there, staring at the stars for a night or spend time with Elayne. Except for the Alchemy, everything had depended on her mood. Had only been enjoyable if she truly felt like it. In the past few months, she had found someone who gave her a feeling better than that all, just by being here. And she had to remember that Mort was the one who saved him. He had cursed him, yes. And she would forever feel strange about that, wondering if everything would have worked better if Kaz had never turned. But, in the end, if it hadn’t been for Mort, she would have been alone in this castle. And she wouldn’t have made it through the year like that.
So, she smiled. “It did, ” she answered. “The fight… The day you left, ” she started. “It seemed to have gone through to him and things went better from there on. ” She couldn’t help but smile again. And this time, the smile was visible in her eyes too. As it was sincere, rather than what she had been putting up the past days. “So you have my thanks for that, ” she thanked him. He had saved their relationship. Again. “Though I don’t think you expected to come back to this, ” she spoke, looking around before she laughed. A fucking castle.
So, she smiled. “

AFTER EVERYTHING I WITNESSED
after all of these decisions
The time he had spent in Vanaheim, had been an interesting one for sure. Especially for his own peace of mind. Which was still not quite fixed yet. He was struggling with his identity from the day he had turned Kaz. Such a selfish action. So impulsive as well. Unforgivable, to say the least. Yet, he felt like it had been the only right thing to do. Even if it meant turning a lot of people against him. Allison was one of those people for sure. He had saved his brother, but turned him into the same monster she despised at the same time. Though it seemed like she didn’t hate him for it. The man they both loved, was still alive, or at least what could be considered alive. And in the end, it hadn’t changed the bond they had.
At least, that was what he concluded when she replied to his comment. ”All of us struggle in the beginning. I’m glad he eventually got himself together, though I didn’t really expect him not to. He is a strong man”, He said with a faint smile around his lips. What he had inflicted on him, wasn’t the easiest to deal with, yet he had managed to pull through. When she started laughing, he couldn’t help but laugh as well. ”It sure came as a surprise, yes. I knew you had ambition, but Grand Duchess?” He chuckled. Maybe it was about time for her to explain how this all had happened, and most importantly, why.

All of them struggled in the beginning. He made it sound so casual, as if it was something completely normal. As if it was like a teen struggling with his hormones, where he would get grumpy and had mood swings. Like it was a man who fell in love for the first time, struggling with his feelings. A woman who had her heart broken, dealing with it in her own way. He made it sound… human. And it caused a shiver to go down her spine, yet she smiled. Because, while it disturbed her in ways that she didn’t want to think about, it was still about the man she loved. And she would get over this. Or at least, she would find her way with it. Because if she didn’t, she would have to leave him. And she had promised to stay with him until the day she died. Unconsciously, her fingers moved towards the ring, moving it between her thumb and middle finger. He was hers, as she was his. “I am glad. ”
Luckily, the conversation took a turn quickly enough, causing her mood to go up again, as she remembered what they had fought for. “It was something I had been planning out for a while, ” she admitted. “I was not planning on getting Kaz involved, however. Felt like it was too soon to lay any kind of responsibility on his shoulders. ” And even more so, she hadn’t been sure about marrying him. Without realizing it, she bit her lip and looked down on her hand, looking at the gold ring around her finger.
Luckily, the conversation took a turn quickly enough, causing her mood to go up again, as she remembered what they had fought for. “

AFTER EVERYTHING I WITNESSED
after all of these decisions
Though Kaz had done some questionable things throughout his life, he would never be the one to speak one bad word about his brother. Ever. He wasn’t even aware of most of it, yet he was still a hero to him. The joy of his life, the person he would always love no matter what. A connection that went beyond the relation instilled in their blood. Every memory he had about the boy, were good ones. He had forgiven him for what he had done to their parents without thinking twice about it. Family was so important to the vampire. He had lost his parents, and he had almost lost Kaz as well. They were the only ones left, and even though he had caused him pain and sadness, he would always forgive him and love him regardless.
Allison would hopefully do the same. She had married him, by choice, or that was what he believed. When she told him she hadn’t planned on involving Kaz in this whole ordeal, he nodded. ”How is he holding up then?” He asked, wondering how the other was dealing with this responsibility on top of being a newborn vampire. Two nights ago he had seemed fine, although a bit.. Drunk, perhaps. Another thing that clearly marked the differences between them, as he had never even touched a bottle of alcohol in his life before.

How he was holding up. Allison sighed, pulling her hand through her hair again. “I’ve been trying to… avoid letting him handle anything, honestly, ” she admitted with a shameful smile. She had no idea why, but the feeling that she could share this with Mort had pushed away the doubts. “So he’s been fine, ” she then said, trying to seem a bit more happy about the whole matter. It was tiring, for sure. But, it was all worth it. She just didn’t want him to be overwhelmed, causing her to overwhelm herself with everything. Yet, she told herself to be strong. To pull through. For she had put this on herself.
“How has your trip been? ” she decided to ask, trying to derail the conversation for a bit. For she didn’t know if she was ready to tell Mort about everything yet. About how their marriage hadn’t quite been one for love, but simply because Kaz had said he’d help her out. They both had doubts and it made her feel like this all was way too quick. Doubts that vanished as soon as they were together, but lingered when they weren’t. One day, she told herself, she would believe that he would stay. But that day wasn’t today.

AFTER EVERYTHING I WITNESSED
after all of these decisions
There was one thing they had in common. They both cared about Kaz, and worried about him all the time. Which wasn’t the easiest task, for sure. The vampire had ran away because it had eventually taken too much energy from him. Though his small identity crisis could be considered the biggest factor, of course. He wouldn’t abandon his brother if he had known he still needed him. If he had know Allison wouldn’t have been there for him to compensate for his absence. But it almost seemed like the brunette herself could use a break from everything as well. ”How about you though? Are you fine as well?” He therefore asked, as he worried about her wellbeing too. She was.. Family now. And if there was one thing that was important to him, it was exactly that.
”It was great”, He replied to her question. He wouldn’t go into much detail, at least not about the part where he had been spending time with the Commander. He didn’t know how much Allison knew about who had tried to kill Kaz.. But he could imagine she wouldn’t be too happy to find out he had a relationship with that person now. Another secret he would have to keep for a while. So he decided only to tell her about the harmless part of it. ”I have met an old man who is willing to sell his farm to me. I think I might move there, eventually. It’s not that far away, so I can visit often, but I feel like it’s time to have a place for my own again”, He shared his plans with her. It was also.. Closer to Mother’s Watch, which was sure another benefit to the location.

The higher you climb, the further you fall. But don't be ashamed of wanting it all. Cause the view from the top is beautiful but fleeting. Looks can be deceiving
‘How about you though? Are you fine as well?’ was a question she was getting so often nowadays, though always formulated slightly different. ‘How are you?’ ‘You look tired.’ ‘Have you been sleeping well?’ If she hadn’t been tired already, the questions sure would have caused her to be. But again, she smiled softly. “I am fine, ” she responded. “It has just been extremely tiring, but… ” She shook her head, smiling. “What else is new. ” He had seen her when she was figuring out the cure on Kaz’ couch, falling asleep there. This wasn’t the first time she was overworking herself and it was far from the last time she would do so. But at least this time, Kaz was by her side, rather than where he had been before. It made it all so much better.
At least Mort seemed to have had a good time. She was actually glad to hear that, though his words about a farm were quite unexpected. “Please, remember that you are welcome in our home for as long as you want, ” she reassured him. That was the least she could do, after all. Plus, she liked seeing Kaz happy. And she was sure that Mort’s presence would help. “But that is nice to hear. If I can do anything to help, please, do not hesitate to ask. I owe you a lot. ” And she did. For she had treated this man like absolute crap.

AFTER EVERYTHING I WITNESSED
after all of these decisions
Extremely tiring. Somehow he could relate, but on the other hand he couldn’t. He got how it could be exhausting mentally. From time to time, even vampires needed rest. As Lexa would put it, to have some closure. Not specifically on a day, at least not for him. But in some situations it was nice to shut down the brain for a while. Especially in periods of overthinking. A well deserved and most importantly needed break for his racing thoughts. It had all been better from there on. Or at least, that was what he was trying to tell himself. He was still struggling though. But he would get there. ”Take care of yourself, will you. Pushing yourself beyond your limits won’t do anyone any good”, He said to her, perhaps unwanted advice.
Maybe she should take a break as well. Though she had just moved to a new home, like he was planning to do. The difference was that his new house would be way more secluded, away from any crowds that would distract him. It was for the better, considering his condition. The further he was away from any busy place, the safer the people would be. ”Thank you, I appreciate it”, He said with a genuine smile. ”I mean, I will have to fix up the buildings first anyway. It's a bit early to say this, but when it's done, you're more than welcome to visit as well”, He continued. After that, he would have to decorate the place too. Which would be the most fun part, right?
