AFTER EVERYTHING I WITNESSED
after all of these decisions
After being separated from Kaz, losing both his parents and his brother at the same time, he had been lost. Suddenly the young boy had found himself alone in a strange land, surrounded by people he didn’t know. People he couldn’t trust. It had taken Edmund years to break down his walls. Eventually though, he had learned the elder vampire was worthy of his trust. He would keep him safe. And he had kept that promise. From what he had heard, his brother hadn’t had the same luck. Living on the streets, fighting to survive. Both their past hadn’t been easy, but at least he had known a home. At least he had had a father. Therefore he would never mention what he was now sharing with Allison to Kaz. And he hoped she would keep this information between the two of them as well.
The vampire listened to her words, nodding a couple of times. She didn’t judge him, that much was clear. ”I think Kaz has found that with you”, He said with a smile around his lips. ”Thank you for not giving up on him”, He continued. He remembered their first encounter, at the front door of the house. Where he had warned her for what he had done, and how it would be dangerous for her to enter. Yet, she had done exactly that. Because she loved him, no matter what. Perhaps Kaz didn’t fully realise it yet, but he was really lucky with her.

Surrounded, but always alone
So pick a place, pretend it's home
The higher you climb, the further you fall. But don't be ashamed of wanting it all. Cause the view from the top is beautiful but fleeting. Looks can be deceiving
Alchemy had this effect on her where she could zone out for hours, staring into nothingness, just… seeing the possibilities. Especially in a garden like this, she only needed the faintest trigger to completely lose track of time. It was a good thing, as it had kept her going all this time. When life got rough, she pushed it away and focused on the one thing that would always be there. People left, possessions got lost and time went by. But, her Alchemy would always be there. Even in the darkest of times, there was always something she could do. Even if it was working towards the cure. In all honesty, for most of her life she hadn’t thought it was possible to find. She had created this impossible goal for herself. Something to waste her life trying to find. Something to keep coming back to. A safety net, in a way. It was only recently that she had started to find valuable information, actually triggering that spark of hope that she would be able to find it after all.
Mort’s words surprised her, as she was never sure if they were the truth. In her case, it was. Without a doubt, he was the home she wanted to return to. But, he was a difficult one and there were always times where she wondered if the same was true for him. Hearing Mort say it like that, caused her to smile. His following words were a surprise again. “I made a promise, ” she told him with a smile. “Before we got married, before he got turned. ” She couldn’t help but shake her head at the thought. It felt like this was ages ago. “And to be fair, ” she started, looking away again, “I rely on him too much to even consider it. ”

AFTER EVERYTHING I WITNESSED
after all of these decisions
Looking back on that day, and considering the weeks that had followed, he would have never believed he would spend time with her alone in the garden. She hadn’t been going easy on him while they were still living in Kaz’ house. He could vividly remember going with her to the library as well, where she had shared her not so positive views on vampires. After that day he had not dared to hope she would ever accept him. Or his brother, for that matter. It would have been so much easier for her to turn around and walk away. But she had done the exact opposite. And for that, he was grateful. He wasn’t quite sure how the situation would have turned out if she hadn’t been there.
“I made a promise,” She replied with a smile, after a short silence. Her words caused a warm feeling in his chest. Love truly was a beautiful thing, and he was so happy they had found that with each other. ”It warms my heart to know you support each other so much”, He said, a strange choice of words considering his heart wasn’t beating anymore. ”And I’m grateful you allow me to be a part of your life together, even after what happened”, He continued. It was an honour for sure.

It was true. And that was something that no one else saw. It was clear that she supported Kaz, as she had been in his house for the entire time after he had changed. He had treated both his brother and her like shit, like he didn’t want them there, but she had stayed. Because she knew that if the roles were reversed, she wouldn’t have wanted him to give up either. Everyone needed that person that would pull as you pushed. She was just glad it had happened at that time of their lives. Where everything had gone well for once, where she had realized how much he meant to her. A few weeks earlier and she would have dropped him, or possibly never even showed up. Timing was important.
She was getting slightly uncomfortable at all the positivity Mort was throwing at her. A part of her was almost afraid it was a calm before the storm, but she decided to ignore that feeling. It was Mort being Mort. He meant truly well, unlike the people she knew in her life before him. So, she smiled. Faintly, but it was there. “And I am grateful that you have forgiven me for being such a bitch, ” she told him. “I’ve been told I’m pretty good at that. ” If this would have been a high school, she would have definitely had the title of queen bitch. She shook her head for a second, before biting her lip. “You’re family now, Mort, ” she told him, to come back to the subject they had just left. “So you will be treated as such. ” She had married his brother, after all.

AFTER EVERYTHING I WITNESSED
after all of these decisions
In the end, all was good now. The dust had settled and he was glad they were all on better terms now. The bonds were still fragile, especially with his brother, but he hadn’t expected it to be fixed in just one week. It would take time and energy, but he was willing to invest it all. Because family to him was important. Kaz would forever be his brother. It had been pure coincidence, the fact that they shared the same blood. To him, it didn’t really matter. He loved him for who he was and the memories they shared, not purely because they were born to the same parents.
Meanwhile he would also try to build a friendship with Allison. Today had been a good start. He shrugged lightly when she thanked him for forgiving her. ”I might be immortal, but I have no time to hold grudges”, He chuckled. There was no place for negativity in his life. Her next comment almost made him emotional. It meant a lot to hear that coming from her. ”We should do this more often then. If you’re not too busy with whatever a Grand Duchess does, that is”, He joked. Or too busy with her Alchemy stuff, for that matter.

Immortality. It was a strange thought and one she still wasn’t too sure of. It took away all humanity one had. Or, so she had thought for most of her life. Mort and Kaz had started to make clear that it was not the case, that they were still very much human. Flawed creatures with feelings, regrets and… love. It had shaken her reality and removed the path she was once set to take. All she was left with, were her own hands to carve a new one with. And she didn’t know how to, but she was sure that in time, she would find out. And perhaps it would be a lonely road, perhaps it would not. In the end, she would treasure her moments with these two vampires. For it was the most precious time she’d remember.
They should do this more often. Allison couldn’t help but chuckle at the words. How things had changed. “Life is short if you’re human, ” she started, smiling faintly. “I will be too busy until the day I die. ” She couldn’t help but shake her head at the thought. It was not even a lie. She’d probably die working. “But I can make time for this, Mort. So we will. ”

Of course she laughed at his words. It was just his way to let her know that he had truly enjoyed their time together in the garden. He had learned a thing or two about her again and it felt like he was getting to know her better every time. He didn’t want to rush anything, but he would even dare to call this the beginning of a friendship. At least he trusted her. And it didn’t feel as if he was making a mistake. Though he was a gullible and naive person, he believed like it was the right thing to do. She wouldn’t take advantage of him and would prove to be worthy of his trust.
Busy until the day she died. He had heard that one before. Though she would make time for him. Which he appreciated, of course. ”So we will”, He echoed her words. A warm smile graced his lips as he turned towards her and bowed his head lightly as a meaning of saying goodbye. ”I will leave you to it then, for now”, He said, after which he nodded one more time and started making his way towards the castle again.
