Surrounded, but always alone
So pick a place, pretend it's home
The higher you climb, the further you fall. But don't be ashamed of wanting it all. Cause the view from the top is beautiful but fleeting. Looks can be deceiving
With Kaz, she would have never tried something like this. He would have seen right through it, or missed the joke completely. He tended to be a lot more serious, and so the mood between them was too. She had always expected to end up with someone different from that. For her entire life, she had expected to find someone who would show her the world. Someone who would show her that life was about more than just work. Yet, she had found so much more. A place to call home. And she would try to be that person to him. Because all she had done up until this point, was to try and prevent him from hitting rock bottom. She had seen him when he didn’t fight for his life. And that was a memory she would never lose.

Yet, Mort was different. And Mort was, perhaps even more so than Kaz, a reason that she had been conflicted in her opinions on vampires. Which was part of the reason she had asked to talk to him, rather than leaving it to Kaz. She enjoyed his presence and was glad they were on good enough terms to be able to joke now. Especially after how she had been to him. The joke was over soon enough, however, as he asked about the vikings again. “They do,” she answered. “The vikings are not to be messed with,” she spoke. “But I doubt they’ll be coming back to Rhoynar any time soon.

AFTER EVERYTHING I WITNESSED
after all of these decisions

In moments like this one, he was most in touch with his human side. The glimpse in his eyes would remind his sire of the young boy he had taken in his home. When he had finally opened up to the elder a bit, which had taken him quite some time, he had asked him so many questions. Before he even knew what Edmund truly was, he had always seen him as the source of knowledge he was. Knowledge gathered in the centuries he had lived, rather than read in books. Most of the stories had been told to him first-hand. Back then he hadn’t known that, but later he had explained what he was and it had all made so much sense. Of course the man possessed a sense of wisdom, which came naturally with his age.

Allison had that vibe as well, answering his questions because she too had experience with the subject he was curious about. If someone could tell him about Vikings, it would be her. No book would be a better source of information. Hopefully it didn’t bore or annoy her to death. Mort could get quite caught up in his curiousness from time to time. ”Is fighting as much their culture as, say, with the people from Vanaheim?” He asked next, as he at least had some experience with that. This way, he could compare them a bit, which would be very interesting to him. ”If I bore you with my questions, let me know”, He quickly said next, a faint smile gracing his lips as he met her gaze again. She was Grand Duchess now. She probably had much more important matters to attend to.

She had become a murderer. She had killed herself, in a way. If she looked back on how she had been a few months ago, she wouldn’t recognize this person. Before Giovanni’s death, she had felt like she could take on the world. She had clear goals and had been willing to sacrifice everyone and everything to reach them. But then, someone had gotten inside of her head and in the blink of an eye, everything had fallen down. She had ended the life of her boss and with that, had ended her own. Yet, she had the chance to start a new one. Something that Trystane and Giovanni would never be able to. The old her would have called it necessary evil. Now, however, she actually felt regret. And this change of mind was killing her. Something that had led to her reaction to his question earlier, and didn’t quite help with how lost and tired she already felt in her new life.

Mort asked a question again, causing a faint smile on her lips. “Not really,” she answered. “I’d still compare it to Rhoynar more than any country. They’re quite something, but I wouldn’t call them Savage,” she tried to explain. Vikings were something else, but if there was one thing they were comparable to, in a way, it was the pirates. Not really, but it was more accurate than comparing them to the people of Navarre or Valyria, at least. She softly grinned when he told her that she needed to let him know if he bored her with questions. “It’s fine,” she simply told him. At least it kept the conversation going. “Perhaps you should visit Falkreath sometime.

AFTER EVERYTHING I WITNESSED
after all of these decisions

It was nothing new he was kind of addicted to learning about new and exciting subjects. His sire had been the first one to endure countless hours of questioning, though he had showed nothing but patience in answering every question he could come up with. For now, he hoped, Allison would do the same. Because boy did he have a lot to ask. He nodded a few times while she was explaining how Vikings were more comparable to the pirates of Rhoynar than the people of Vanaheim. The word savage came up again, and he had to pay close attention as to not make a comment on it. No one had to know about his visits there, at least not for now.

Then she suggested visiting Falkreath one day. Mort softly bit his lip. ”We’ll see”, He chuckled a bit nervous. To ask yet another question, he looked around again for a short time. ”So, this garden doesn’t happen to have a pond, does it?” He asked with a smirk. Very important information, indeed.

The nervousness in Mort’s voice caused the brunette to raise a brow. “You could stay at my place,” she calmly noted. “As long as you keep your hands off any… locked rooms,” she mumbled after. Her house had been rid of its most important possessions and was now mostly empty, only holding furniture. All the bookcases were emptied and the books were taken to the castle. But, the basement was still… strange. She didn’t need anyone to know about it, didn’t want any questions on what had happened there. It was a part of her life that she tried to forget. At least until she knew what to do with her future.

The next question caused her brow to raise even further. “No,” she answered, her expression clearly confused. “What the hell would I do with a pond?” she asked. She wasn’t quite planning to drown her herbs. What else would a pond do? The herbs were getting watered by the staff and… She shook her head for a second, pulling her hand through her hair. What a strange man he was.

AFTER EVERYTHING I WITNESSED
after all of these decisions

It was a pretty confusing request when she mentioned her old house. Why would she say that? Who even had locked rooms in their houses? What would she need those for in the first place? He decided it would be wise not to mention it though. She had probably said it in an encrypted way because it was something she didn’t want to talk about, considering she locked it away so no one would find out what was behind the door, right? Secrets. Those could weigh a person down like nothing else. That’s why he kept none. Oh wait, he actually did. Considering he still hadn’t told Kaz about his relationship with the person who had wanted to kill him.

A very saddening and discouraging negative answer was given to his next question. “What the hell would I do with a pond?” She dared to ask, and now it was his turn to throw her a confoosed look. ”Well, to keep ducklings, of course”, He retorted, as if it was the most normal and mundane thing in the world. Which for him, it was. Every garden needed a pond with a few ducks in it. His future house would have one too, it wasn’t even up for discussion.

Allison had a past. For as long as she could remember, she had lived a life that wasn’t her own. Giovanni had made her decisions for her, letting her think that she held the reins. For all this time, she had been doing exactly what he wanted her to do. In her own way at least, she thought. Until she realized that he had taught her those ways. In the end, it had never given her the chance to form her own opinion on… anything, really. She spent her life hating vampires and now she was standing here, trying to bond with one because she loved another. What a fucking disaster. Giovanni would kill her.

And here they were. Talking about ducklings. The vampire and the one who swore she’d rid the world of them. She couldn’t help but chuckle, shaking her head softly. “So much for the world’s greatest predator,” she mumbled, pulling a hand through her hair. “I’m not going to keep ducklings in a garden where we keep poisonous herbs, Mort,” she told him with a grin. “Unless you think that’d be a good idea, of course.

AFTER EVERYTHING I WITNESSED
after all of these decisions

For now, he was all good here in Rhoynar. From the moment his new house would be ready, he’d move there. Which was still pretty far away from Falkreath. He wouldn’t want to find Vikings in his backyard to be honest. Only ducklings. And other animals, perhaps. It was kind of therapeutic. Being close to nature in general. Mort was used to living away from busy cities. His hometown had had a low population, Edmund’s mansion had been built on a remote plot of land and now his cabin would be secluded too. Just the way he liked it. Of course he would love for some people to visit, but he wouldn’t just give the location to anyone. The place shouldn’t be too crowded, he figured.

If Allison visited, she would maybe finally realise how important it was to have some ducklings around. Though she still laughed at it. When she called him a predator, he was laughing too. He didn’t quite fit that stereotype now did he? His laugh quickly faded when she mentioned poisonous plants. ”Oh no, nope, can’t have that around ducklings, you’re right”, He said while nodding. ”What do you need those herbs for though?” He asked, wondering if he was asking questions that she wouldn’t want to answer again.

I can lead an organisation, hunt after a cure I’ll never find and even become a Grand Duchess,” the brunette spoke, turning away from Mort. She started walking, clearly expecting him to follow her as she did. “But I will forever be an Alchemist before all of that,” she told him with a faint smile, stopping next to a plant that had drawn her attention. She took a leaf between her thumb and index finger, smiling softly as she rubbed her thumb over the texture of the leaf.

Alchemy has been my passion since I learned to read,” she told him. “And I am not alone in this. In this castle, people are taught the ways of an Alchemist. Traditional, but mostly modern ways,” she explained. It was, after all, one of the reason she had laid eyes upon this castle. These herbs, if worked with by a good alchemist, can mean so much to someone. This one right here can relieve pain from a burn.

AFTER EVERYTHING I WITNESSED
after all of these decisions

The vampire followed her in silence while they were walking through the garden. He took in every word she said, kind of filing all this information in his memory. He never knew if it could be useful one day. Besides, he liked to learn new facts. About certain events in history, knowledge in science, or more simple information on other people. It gave him joy, in some kind of way. He pictured a little Allison sitting on a bed, reading through books while trying to comprehend what it all meant. The passion she spoke of, was clearly audible in her voice as she spoke about it too.

Mort took a closer look at the plant she was referring to, impressed that she saw such a beautiful purpose in what appeared to be just another random plant to him. ”I wonder how they determined the use of every plant, you know? I bet a lot of researchers got hurt while trying to figure it all out”, He noted. Not all plants were edible, but it would have taken at least one person to try that out, which meant that they had probably gotten very sick or even died while doing so. A slightly amusing, yet tragic thought to say the least.

For most of her life, Allison had looked into books which were filled with recipes, written by people who were long dead. Most of the recipes in these books were what one would call ‘Traditional’, often being a different kind of magick than the more current recipes. It was interesting how that worked. The past and future of Alchemy were quite unique, as it did not just involve bending an element of summoning a creature. Everyone did these things their own ways, harvested power out of something else. An Alchemist was a servant of nature and nature was ever changing. It fascinated her. How a plant could save someone’s life, if there was only someone around who knew.

Mort’s comment caused her to laugh softly. “Calendula, or more commonly known as marigold,” she spoke calmly. The brunette wrapped her hand around the stem, to pull it out of the soil and stand straight again, sniffing the flower. “Not only can they heal burns… We use them in dyes and food too,” she spoke, holding the flower out to Mort, a slight smile on her face. “But they’re not all as friendly, which is something we all have to figure out ourselves,” she spoke, now responding to his comment. “I remember sneaking outside when I was but a child… I wanted to grab a flower that I had seen in the forest,” she spoke, smiling softly as she recalled the moment. “I got home with a rash that looked as if I was about to die.” That had been a fun week.

AFTER EVERYTHING I WITNESSED
after all of these decisions

Mort wondered if one day he would find the energy to put effort in studying again. Since he had been turned, he hadn’t really picked up a book anymore. The past four years he had been busy trying to learn how to live with the monster hiding inside him. It had consumed all his time, even if he had eternity now. Perhaps one day he would have the same control as Edmund had, so he could focus on other things again. For now, he was happy Allison was sharing her knowledge with him, even though it was only a small fact. When she reached him the flower, he accepted it and carefully inspected the leaves. ”How does it work then? Do you just rub the leaves on the burn?” He asked. Maybe he could use this information for something useful in the future.

When she told the story about trying to pick a flower that had given her a bad rash, he chuckled amused. ”Experiments gone wrong, I have a few stories like that too”, He admitted with a grin around his lips. ”Not far from where I lived there was a river. I used to build little ships and make them float down the river. One day I figured it would be a great idea to build a raft big enough to carry me”, He spoke. ”I think my sire already knew what was going to happen, because he watched me all day from the shadow of a tree. He had this amused sly grin on his face but I didn’t understand why. That was up until the moment I pushed the raft in the water and jumped on it. Of course the whole thing sank in mere seconds”, He laughed. Edmund had made fun of him for weeks after that. Sad.

When Mort asked how it worked, she softly shook her head. “By itself, the plant won’t help,” she told him. “They rarely do. But even a non-alchemist can turn this plant into a relief for burns,” she went on, smiling softly. “If I do it, however… It can actually heal the burn.” And that was where the difference between any potion and an Alchemist came to be. Their magical abilities were… strange. They couldn’t bend water or move objects without touching them. What she could do, was reveal the true effects of Mother Nature. Turn Her blessings into beautiful things.

She remembered the rash over her arms. It wasn’t just a rash, but instead had looked like her arms had been completely burned. Blistered, wounded. It was one of the few moments where her stepmother had felt like a true mother. She had allowed the little girl to tell her about some plants she’d need to let it heal and had even gone into the forest to find them. Together, they had made something to relieve the pain, to help cure the wounds. Because of this, it had healed so quickly, leaving no scar behind. Her stepmother had grown slightly more accepting of her magicks at that point, but it had already been too late.

Mort recalled something that had happened to him as a child. As he told her the story, she couldn’t help but laugh at the visual she created. “You sound like you were quite the handful,” she told him, smiling. An adventurer. She wondered where that part of him had gone, as he so often felt… so easy to break from his paths. “You speak of your sire like one would speak of their father,” she then noted.

AFTER EVERYTHING I WITNESSED
after all of these decisions

It was quite clear he had no idea how alchemy actually worked. He knew some people could make medicine out of plants. His sire knew a thing or two about them as well, yet he had no magic to help him. What she described, however, seemed to go way beyond what he thought was possible. She explained there was a difference in how one could use the herbs to make certain potions. ”I would like you to show me one day”, He said with a soft smile. Even though he himself wouldn’t be capable of recreating whatever she came up with, he thought it would be an experience by itself to just see her do it. Because it was her passion and people tended to light up and get in an extremely good mood whenever they were doing what they liked to do.

They were back at sharing childhood stories. The best way to get to know someone, probably. So he told one of his in return. It caused her to laugh, and he couldn’t help but laugh too. It were good memories. “You sound like you were quite the handful,” She mentioned, and he shrugged slightly. "Puberty, I guess?" He replied. Everyone had that phase where they thought they were smarter than the people around them, not taking the time to listen to their advice but rather find out for themselves.

“You speak of your sire like one would speak of their father,” She suddenly noted. It took him by surprise, for some reason. It was true. Was it a bad thing? ”I mean, in a way, he is? He took me in, kept me safe, taught me everything I know. Isn’t that what fathers do”, He spoke softly. He doubted if he should continue, but he decided to do so. Because he really wanted to trust her. It were words he had never said out loud. And words he would never say to Kaz. ”I don’t even really remember how my real father was. Whenever I try to think of him, I picture Edmund instead”, He confessed. His memory had been completely overwritten by the elder vampire, as he had spent so many years by his side.

The higher you climb, the further you fall. But don't be ashamed of wanting it all. Cause the view from the top is beautiful but fleeting. Looks can be deceiving
When the vampire told her that he would like her to show him one day, she looked back at the plants beside her for a second. Never had she tried to perform any Alchemy next to a vampire. In reality, there was still a lot she didn’t know about her own form of magic. There was a lot that no one knew about it. It was, after all, so much easier to find out how another form of magic worked. With Alchemy, it was… difficult. All she knew came from this book, where someone wrote about being a servant of nature. Vampires were abominations of nature and thus incapable of performing his form of Alchemy. Which would make sense. It was the only form that was capable of creating the Cure for Vampirism. If a Vampire could create that… the balances would be all off, wouldn’t they? Only a human could do so. She wondered if there were more situations like that.

Mort spoke of his sire like a father, even admitting that he was more of a father than his own. Allison slowly nodded, understanding how he felt. “I walked out the door when I was fourteen and I haven’t seen my family since,” she slowly told him. “The whole ‘blood is thicker than water’ was never my jam.” A soft smile on her face as she looked back at Mort. With that, she had told him that she understood. If his sire had cared for him, the man deserved to be spoken of in the way the vampire did. With a certain love, a love one could only have for their family. Whether they were family by blood, or by choice. The latter tended to be so much stronger. Being family by choice was, after all, a very powerful thing. “I think it’s true beauty when someone finds people they’d call family,” she admitted. “Gives some sense of hope to those who were not as lucky to have one,” she went on, falling quiet for a few seconds before continuing. “Or those who had one, but lost it.
