DOWN IN THAT DARKNESS
you met all the things you feared

The first day Kaz hadn’t come home, he had only been slightly worried. The vampire had gone out to go look for him, checking the most obvious places he could be hanging out. His now empty house, a couple of bars, even the shady establishment where vampires gathered to feed. No sign of his brother though. Yet, he had decided to go back to the castle and await his return there. There was no need to worry, right? He just needed a break and that’s why he couldn’t find him. He simply didn’t want to be found. Fair, he could have left a note, a little warning. Perhaps he had been too busy, or the urge to be alone for a while had come out of nowhere and he hadn’t had the energy to write one.

The second day, however.. He had received a note. Not from the person he had expected it to come from. No. Isabella. The vampire that had asked him for Edmund’s location. Immediately, he had ran to Allison, as he was panicking way too much to think clear. His brother had been kidnapped and now he was in danger. All thanks to him. Because he had refused to answer her question. From there on, he had spent every minute in the city, looking for him. Though he had been unable to locate him. Out of desperation, he had decided to call on his sire for help. He just didn’t know what to do anymore.

Two months. That’s how long it had taken him to fuck it all up. Restlessness had made him look tired, for as far as a vampire could look like that. The burning sun made him feel weaker than he already felt. His heart would be pounding in his throat, if it was still beating. Mort stood outside the castle’s gates, looking out over the path that was leading up to it. He was worried sick, couldn’t control his nerves and if he hadn’t been a vampire he would have been trembling all over his body. Right now, he looked like a statue, frozen in place as he waited for his brother’s return.

   I'm gonna raise the stakes
She actually felt impatient as Kaz made his way in front of her, walking like… Well. Like someone who had been stabbed in both his legs. Repeatedly. She carried silver dagger in her hand as she calmly followed his steps, making their way to the castle. It had been a while since she had last seen the damn place. She would never miss the sight of it. It reminded her of human greed, where they were constantly wishing for more money. Everything they did, everything they wanted, was to be the richest of them all. And once they had it, they wondered how to properly show it to the world. The richest got to place a castle on a cliff and look down on the idiots that bowed down at their feet. It was funny to see how the owner of this castle looked like a complete mess, done with life and everything about it. She had broken him in so many pieces and the thought of him sitting on the throne caused her to chuckle.

The way to the castle was empty. Good. They had called their guards in, sent them out, whatever. All that mattered was that they weren’t here. The idiots had followed her advice and hopefully, weren’t planning to lure the two into some stupid trap. After all, she would get what she wanted. She still carried the stake with her and would not hesitate to put it into his chest. But, who knew. Maybe it wouldn’t come to that and she would actually get what she wanted today. Maybe, for once, a fledgling of Edmund’s wasn’t as stupid as the older vampire himself was.

There he was. Mort. “Stop walking,” she commanded Kaz, before she made her way past him, showing Mort a smile. “Would you look at that,” she spoke, stepping towards him and stopping in front of him, crossing her arms. “He was actually brave enough to show his face.

The pull on my flesh was just too strong
Stifled the choice and the air in my lungs
Better not to breathe than to breathe a lie

He was free. This was only the beginning. He had survived. He had been defeated. He would be safe now. Nobody even cared about him. He had been through worse. He had begged for his life. She had showed mercy. It had all been a game to her. Everything was going to be fine. The hell had only just started.

He barely could stay on his feet, stumbling forward and every step his leg seemed to scream. The splinters in the wound carved deeper and deeper, his other leg weak from the blood loss and the stabs of the silver dagger. He could feel the eyes staring at him, not only feel it burn into his back, but he knew that with every step he took, he drew more attention. But who wouldn’t watch a crippled Grand Duke stumble through the streets, looking more dead and alive, being pushed forward by someone that didn’t even came close to looking like she could match his strength.

It didn’t help that it was in the middle of the day and the sun was burning down on them. No shadow, just sun. He could feel the energy being sucked out of him every minute. He was dizzy and lightheaded, close to losing conscious once again. But he kept on his feet. He was so close, so close to something called freedom.

They neared the castle, Kaz tried to look for guards, for anyone. But he was met with a desolate and empty place. They truly hadn’t cared. And then she commanded him to stop. And he did, like he was some sort of pet. His entire proud demeanor had vanished, leaving a crippled and broken boy behind. He could barely stand on his feet as he looked over the shoulder of the woman and saw his brother. Almost immediately, he averted his eyes, he couldn’t stand his face. After all, his brother was only here to.. to do what exactly? It didn’t matter. Kaz just hoped this would be solved quickly, because he felt like passing out.

From the moment he saw to people in the distance, he took a deep breath in, even though he didn’t even need to. It was more a way to calm his nerves slightly, which failed miserably. His blue eyes had this panicking shimmer in them and he realised Isabella would be very capable of figuring out how scared he was. Not even for his own safety, but for what she had done to Kaz. The young vampire didn’t even know what had happened, but somehow he could feel it. Deep down he knew something really bad had overcome his brother. As he had always known when they were just kids, a dark cloud of doom hanging in the air, making it harder to breathe when something was going on.

When they were closer, Mort could see his gut feeling had been right. His fledgling was looking terrible. Blood was all over his clothing, which were ripped in several places as well. Overall he had this defeated vibe radiating off of him. Pain, despair, hopelessness, weakness. Shattered and broken. He wasn’t even paying attention to Isabella as he watched him in horror. Only when she spoke and basically blocked his view, he redirected his gaze towards her. He wanted to say something, anything, but he was too in shock. What she delivered, was definitely not his brother.

Mort was impressed with her work of art, causing her to look over her shoulder at the man she had brought with her. Shattered, broken. Where he had once given the impression of a king, he was naught more than the pawn he was supposed to be now. She had merely revealed his true self. She carefully looked back at Mort, raising a brow. “I’m glad you decided to come alone,” she told him with a smile. She was proud of what she had done and she was not making the slightest bit of effort to hide this. After all, why hide the truth? She had turned Kaz into the weak, despicable monster he had truly been all this time. She had broken his shell, revealed whatever ugly thing had been inside. How could she not be proud?

So about our arrangement,” she went on. “I don’t have all day, you know.” She wasn’t patient. Not at all. She had spent the past four days with the Grand Duke, who wasn’t that Grand anymore, and she was about done with him. It was time for her to leave this forsaken city and not look back for the coming few months, as she went back to her normal duties. Bounty hunting. She looked forward to going back to the hunt.

How could someone be so cruel to another human being? Was this what the monster did when they let them take control? The young boy suddenly felt nauseous, seeing Kaz like that. Again. Much, much worse now though. The mountainlion had shredded his neck to pieces, when he had still been human. This was nothing like it. It looked like he would drop down any second. If he hadn’t been dead, he would sure be now. Tears were welling up in his eyes as his now hazy gaze focused on Isabella. “I’m glad you decided to come alone, She let him know with a smile. Still, he could not speak. He only nodded lightly. It was true. He was alone. No guards, nobody. Just the three vampires.

“I don’t have all day, you know.” She urged him to finally give the address. He hadn’t agreed on this though. He had thought, hoped, that she would bring his brother back in one piece. Finally, the boy found the courage to reply. ”You tortured him”, He said, his voice barely a whisper. ”You did not only kidnap him, you tortured him”, He continued. ”The deal has changed”, He concluded. Which was great, honestly. Because it had on his side, too. ”There is no need for me to point you towards him. He is on his way here as we speak.”

‘You tortured him,’ the vampire spoke. She had to put effort into not sarcastically replying really? as he mentioned it. After all, she had used Kaz to send a message. The message had, clearly, been sent. Mort repeated himself as if he hadn’t been clear about it the first time. He was the kind of guy who, when there was an enormous elephant standing in the room, would point at it. He would shout: ‘There’s an elephant in the room!’ She was sure of it. No doubt.

Her amused mood changed completely when he spoke his next words, however. The deal has changed. That was not up to him to decide. Fury appeared in her eyes as she listened to his next words. She could feel her fingers tingling as he spoke on, about how Edmund was coming here. In a normal situation, the words would have been music to her ears. But the sheer sense of disrespect… The fact that he thought that it was up to him to change the deal. She stepped forward, placing her hand on his neck and making an effort to push him back until his back was pressed against the gate. “This was not our deal,” she hissed, anger clear in her voice.

Never had he been exposed to such horrors. The image of Kaz, barely standing and clearly suffering, would be forever etched into his memory. This was his fault. He should have given her the location that night in the garden. If he had known, he would have. Even after the harrowing description she had given him.. If he had to choose between those two awful situations, he would have led her to Edmund. Knowing his sire would be more capable of defending himself against her than his brother. Not because he thought Kaz was weak, but because he had promised to always protect him. And he had failed. He had failed him, once again.

In the end, she would get what she wanted anyway. Edmund was on his way. If she would succeed in doing all those horrendous things to him, was another question. But she would see him again, as she had wanted. Mort wasn’t paying much attention, his brain way too occupied with processing what he was witnessing. Suddenly her hand was around his throat, while she pushed his back against the gate. It wasn’t painful but.. He was easily scared. ”N-no, I’m sorry, I.. I panicked”, He stammered, eyes wide open in fear for her. ”I just d-didn’t know w-what to do”, He went on, cursing himself for not being able to control the stutter in his voice.

Everything hurt. Everything was too much. Every word he heard felt like it splintered in his brain, it felt like they were shouting instead of talking. He could feel the gaze of his brother falling upon him and Kaz looked at the ground. Dizzyness struck him once again and he wobbled for a moment, keeping himself on his feet. His left leg was pounding and his right leg was going numb, so being on his feet got harder and harder to do with every second that passed.

It was then that the woman suddenly grabbed Mort by his throat. Kaz hadn't been paying attention, too focussed on not passing out and staying up right. But even with his vampiric senses, everything was a blur. The vampire looked up. Too fast. The world started to spin as he wanted to take a step forward, not even sure what he wanted to do. But the only thing that happened was that the ground suddenly came real close. It was only moments later that Kaz realised he had basically crashed down, his legs giving up on him. Just as everyone around him had given up on him. His eyes rolled backwards as he turned to his side, somehow still conscious. But if it was for the sun and this whole situation, it wouldn't be for long.

Surrounded, but always alone
So pick a place, pretend it's home
The higher you climb, the further you fall. But don't be ashamed of wanting it all. Cause the view from the top is beautiful but fleeting. Looks can be deceiving
It was pure horror. His blue eyes were filled with nothing but pain as he stood there, like a dog who was been told to stay. He didn’t fight, didn’t even attempt to hurt the woman. Instead he fell down like he was nothing. Tears found their way to her eyes as she froze in place for a second. Never had she seen something this bad. And she had found Kaz wounded after his encounter with the High King. She had seen him beaten up by Giovanni. And still, this was going to be the one visual she would never be able to shake. It would keep her up at night and haunt her even when awake. It would be something she wouldn’t forget until the day her heart finally stopped beating.

And she was furious.

Her heart was torn as she wanted to jump at the woman’s throat, but her feet brought her to Kaz, falling down on her knees next to him. “Kaz,” she whispered, placing her hands on her lap as she was too scared to touch him. He was a broken man long before this, had his trauma’s. And something told her that touching him was probably the last thing he wanted right now. She could almost feel the ring burn on her finger as she watched the man she loved so much, torn into so many pieces. Broken without her being able to help him through it. After she had promised to take care of him, after everything. She had failed him. “You’re safe now,” she whispered. “I won’t let anyone hurt you again,” she then promised him, before she looked up at the vampire who was holding Mort. Their gazes met. Her face was covered in tears as she stared at the woman, her eyes burning with a rage she hadn’t felt in so long.

You will pay.

You will pay,’ the brunette spoke. Isabella looked back at Mort and smiled. “Very well,” she spoke. She let go of his throat and stood still, staring at him for a while. “Next time, I will make sure your head is separated from your body.” she warned him. The tone of her voice like how you would speak to a child after he had done something bad, when you told him that he would be sent to bed if he did it again. To her, this warning meant as much as that one would. It was a simple punishment, that was all.

For now, however, her attention had been shifted. Before the brunette could have realized it, she had appeared next to her. She smiled while taking her face in her hand as she squeezed her cheeks between her thumb and index finger, turning her face towards her. “I’ve heard that threat before,” she spoke, grinning widely. “Let’s hope yours is less empty than his was,” she then told the girl. Now she saw what the two had in common. She too seemed to be at a point where rage won from fear, fire burning inside her eyes. The same fire that she had seen in the blue eyes of the Duke.

For now, however,” she spoke calmly, giving the brunette a little push before she got up, looking at Kaz for one second. “He’ll never be the same again. Let this be a warning for next time,” she spoke, before she walked away from the vampires and their little doll.

Everything was a blur and hazy. Colors blended into each other and that fucking sun kept on burning. It felt like the blisters on his lips started to open again just by the slightest of exposure to the light. It truly felt like he was dying. Slowly he blinked with his eyes when a familiar voice sounded, calling his name. She sat besides him, worried. Allison.

Her words seemed to bounce off the walls he had already built for himself. Whatever she was saying, it wasn't true. She just needed him for herself, to use him, not because she cared. He was supposed to be safe, that no one was going to hurt him ever again. Then why did it feel like heh ad walked right back into the lion's den? His eyes met for a short moment with hers. A vague, painful look as written inside them, maybe even a helpless one. That was, until he managed to turn to his other side, shielding himself from her, as if he didn't want anything to do with her. And then everything went dark.

From the corner of his eye, he could see the familiar posture of Allison walking out. Straight to Kaz, who had dropped to the ground because he simply couldn’t keep standing anymore. Meanwhile he was not even resisting the firm grip of the elder vampire on his throat. She was distracted by the Grand Duchess, but it didn’t even cross his mind to make a move. When she spoke to him, firm and cold, he nodded slowly. Anyone speaking in such manner would be able to make him bow. It was who he was. A very high contrast between him and his brother, who would always fight. Because Kaz was proud and strong. Right?

So fast that Allison wouldn’t see her coming, the vampire stood next to her. Mort didn’t move, even though he wanted to. He wanted the other to stay away from the people he loved, yet he had no idea how to communicate or act on that feeling. Only when Isabella left, he stepped away from the gate and walked over to the couple. With his sleeve, he dried his tears. Kaz needed his help. ”He n-needs to get out of the sun”, He murmured, looking at Allison. Waiting for her to agree on his plans, as he knew he didn’t come up with any good ideas ever. ”C-can I pick him up?” He asked for her permission. He would be more capable of carrying the unconscious vampire inside.

The woman had never been one to lose it to panic. Only one event in her life had ever triggered that and it was the loss of her boss. And at this very moment, she felt like she was about to lose it all again. Her nails found their way into her palm as she stared at Kaz. The woman didn’t even matter anymore at this point. All that mattered was Kaz. As he lay down here, torn into a million pieces, it felt like her heart lay with him, torn into just as many. It hurt and it got worse as she thought about how he must feel. But, it was only when he turned away from her, that she felt like her body was about to give up. She bit her lip to not start sobbing as she placed her hand in front of her mouth. She had failed him and he was not going to forgive her for it.

Mort’s words caused her to look up, her eyes widened as she tried to get herself together, but it was hopeless. She had to be the strong one here. That was her task. But, it felt like the woman she once was, was so far away right now. She softly nodded, before looking back at the broken mess in front of her. He hated her. And he had every right to. “You can bring him to our room,” she whispered.

DOWN IN THAT DARKNESS

Out of habit, Mort turned towards others to guide him. It didn’t even matter who it was, as long as they gave him instructions, he would follow them. He just needed that to function though. Whenever he took initiative, he fucked up. Two months ago, he had thought he was ready to go explore the world on his own. How wrong he had been. Luckily Edmund was on his way and he would fix it. He wasn’t ashamed of admitting that he still needed help. His sire wasn’t here yet though, so he turned to the next person he could find. Allison.

The woman looked as broken as the man on the ground. He felt the same insecurities, but together they could figure this out, right? She told him to take his fledgling to their room. Mort nodded a couple of times before kneeling down and carefully picking up his brother. ”We can do this”, He said softly, to her but also to himself. ”We can help him”, He continued. He kept repeating it in his head, as some sort of mantra to focus on. With Kaz in his arms, he started walking towards their destination.
