Surrounded, but always alone
So pick a place, pretend it's home
The higher you climb, the further you fall. But don't be ashamed of wanting it all. Cause the view from the top is beautiful but fleeting. Looks can be deceiving
Mort picked what was left of Kaz up and she looked at the two, tears still rolling down her face. Mort’s words caused her to shake her head softly. She wanted to tell him that she couldn’t. That there was no way that Kaz was going to accept her help now. But, she kept quiet. Her heart was torn, the pieces battling each other. Fighting whether she needed to give up now and give the man the space he wanted, or perhaps needed. Or if she was going to fight for what they had. Fight for what she hoped was right. Could she hold onto something that wasn’t even whole? She could feel herself getting pulled into the abyss, her heart clenching and her breathing speeding up.
No. Grab yourself together, Allison. She closed her mouth and inhaled quietly through her nose. One… Two… Three… Four. After this, she held her breath and counted again, before finally breathing out. She would help Kaz through this whether he would forgive her or not. She had promised herself to him and not only that. He was hers as much as she was his. And that meant she needed to be here. Because she had made a promise and she was going to keep it.
With that, the brunette stood up and rubbed her eyes, before catching up to Mort. “Let me guide you, ” she told him with a faint smile, before walking in front of him. Mort had, after all, probably never seen their room. There was no way he would find it without her telling him where to go. She walked up the stairs and walked through the hallway, all in complete silence. Determination in her veins, yet weak-minded. Strong, yet oh so weak. She was a mess, but she would pull him through this before she would allow herself to break.

The task that was ahead of them, would be hard. There was no denying that. Yet they had to try. They couldn’t give up on Kaz when he needed them the most. Perhaps it was a good thing he was knocked out right now. At least he was not suffering, and.. He could not resist their help. Basically it was the same situation as when he had turned him, all over again. Were they doing things he wouldn’t want them to do right now? They would only find out afterwards, when he woke up again. For now, they had to do what felt right. Splitting the impossible task of saving him in little, more manageable tasks. Carrying him inside would be a good start, even Allison agreed.
The vampire had picked up his brother and started walking, holding in his pace so she could catch up with him. After a few moments, she did. They were all a mess, but Kaz needed them. They could mourn later. “Let me guide you,” She said, taking the lead as he followed her. When they arrived, he carefully placed him on the Grand Duke-sized bed. He then started inspecting some of the wounds, nearly passing out himself. It looked so painful. He couldn’t even imagine what he had been put through. The wounds were weird in a way.. They hadn’t healed properly, almost as if they were caused by.. ”Silver”, He whispered, clearly sounding shocked. ”That’s why it didn’t heal”, He explained, almost more to himself than to her. But then.. How would they help him? If his vampire healing didn’t work, how could they fix this?

Silver. Allison looked up at the vampire and pulled her hand through her hair, clearly not sure what to do with the whole situation. The normally so well put together Grand Duchess, was now a complete mess. She walked up to Kaz and nodded carefully. looking at his lips. “There is very little we can do, ” she spoke. It felt like her voice was non-existent, but luckily Mort had good ears and would be able to hear her. “I will look into everything I have to help speed up the healing, but this will… take time, ” she went on. Why she knew this? There were reasons she had looked up a vampire’s weaknesses. Reasons she’d rather forget at this moment. Her hatred for vampires was a strange subject at this moment and the recent events were only going to make it harder for her to make up her mind.
“Let’s head outside for a second, ” she whispered to Mort. “I don’t want him to overhear us. ” He wouldn’t be waking up anytime soon, so this was the time where she could take a few minutes to talk to Mort about what had happened. But not while looking at him. She’d much rather talk in the hallway, with the door open. She was sure that Mort would hear if the man woke up, but at least they would be able to discuss what they were going to do and what was going to happen now. For neither of them had a plan ready, yet they needed one.

DOWN IN THAT DARKNESS
you met all the things you feared
When he mentioned the silver, and what it could do to a vampire, she didn’t seem surprised. Almost as if he wasn’t telling her anything new. Which was true, but he didn’t know that. He had no idea how far her knowledge went. Luckily he wasn’t the smartest person in the room right now, but she was. As he was relying on her for instructions, it was probably for the better. ”Time.. And blood, probably”, He replied while nodding a few times. When Kaz woke up again, he would need to feed. So his wounds could heal properly. If what she was saying was true, he would burn through it fast in order for his vampiric healing to kick in.
Allison suggested to go outside for a while, as she wanted to speak to him without the chances of Kaz overhearing them. He was pretty sure that they could go wherever, he had enhanced hearing so he would hear it, but he seemed to be out of it anyway. So with a last look upon him, he forced himself to step away. It was hard, as he didn’t want to leave him, scared that he would be gone if he didn’t pay attention to him at all times.

She was well aware the vampire would still hear them outside the room, but at least it… felt better than to talk about him while standing right next to his lifeless body, which looked like a corpse more than ever. Seeing him hurt, hurt her in ways she didn’t know were possible. Ever wound seemed to tug at her heart, rip off another piece as if it hadn’t been torn enough. But, she tried to ignore it, tried to let her mind take over. As the heart was useless today, while she could use her calm mind. She was an Alchemist, for christ’s sake. One specialised in the Supernatural. She needed to find a way to help him.
“You said he’s coming here, ” she spoke, as soon as they had left the room. “Is it true? ” Her face was covered in tears and she looked like a complete mess, but she refused to let it be that way. She had to do everything she could. Which was only three things: Comforting Kaz, which she probably was unable to. Helping him, which she probably was unable to. And ending the woman who had done this to him. Which was where his sire came in.

At least their room only had one door. Or at least, he couldn’t see any other doors. Which meant that he was safe in there, as long as they would stand guard by the only entrance. No one would sneak past a vampire, not even another vampire. The urge to protect his brother was stronger than ever, though he would probably be easily cast aside by whoever wanted to hurt him again. He wanted to keep him safe and unharmed. If only he knew how, that would help a lot. Because as of right now, he was the one putting him in dangerous positions.
When they were in the hallway, he leaned against the frame of the door, looking down on the woman. When she asked her question, he nodded. Normally the thought of his sire would make him smile, but it seemed like he had lost that ability today. ”Yes”, He replied softly. ”When I left, he told me that whenever I needed his help, I could write him a letter”, He explained. ”I mean, I should have never left in the first place but I know he will keep his promise”, He continued, his voice low. He didn’t deserve his help though. He had failed him too. But Kaz and Allison did, and he would make sure Edmund was aware of that.

“Don’t you dare speak like that, ” Allison sneered at the vampire, taking a step in his direction. I should have never left in the first place. Idiot. “He was so, so happy when he told me about you for the first time, ” she told him, a faint smile on her face. “He loves you and your place is here, with him. Not with your sire, ” she told the vampire. “You are at home here just as much as we are. ” Not in the castle, maybe. But in Rhoynar. In their presence. This was where Mort belonged. Because Kaz wanted him here. Perhaps not right now, but he would. Eventually.
“I want to talk to him the second he arrives, ” she went on, after being silent for a bit. “So please, do send him to me once he does. ” It was probably obvious what she wanted to talk about. The sire was the reason all of this had happened. The vampire had wanted his location, taking revenge, or something like that. If he hadn’t angered her with whatever the fuck he had done, none of this would have happened. And he was perhaps the only one who could punish her for her crimes.

DOWN IN THAT DARKNESS

While her words would normally be reassuring, they didn’t have much of an effect now. There was no use in denying how his presence had caused nothing but pain to his brother. Up until the day they had been reunited, Kaz had thought he was dead. He couldn’t even believe he was still alive when he was standing right in front of him. From there on, all had gone wrong. There was no amount of brotherly love that could conquer what had happened to him in the past few days. And he hadn’t even told him about Lexa yet.. ”Don’t worry, I won’t abandon him. But you can’t tell me I have changed his life for the better, because that’s not true”, He replied, a little stubborn perhaps, but still.
In the end, he had failed to protect Kaz. But Edmund could fix this, he was so sure about that. His sire was so much more than just that. He was his father-figure and his hero, someone he looked up to. Asking for his help had only been logical to him, especially when he had been panicking. It was more out of impulse that he had written that letter. Allison mentioned she wanted to speak to him. ”I already told him to come to the castle right away”, He said. It was the best place for a meeting, since it was the closest near the harbour and they were all here anyway.

With fire in her eyes, the brunette stared at the man. The tears had not been able to extinguish this fire. Surprisingly, as it had been flickering these past while. Everything had been good and well at the honeymoon, where she had been able to enjoy the presence of Kaz. No drama, no pain. They had just been… together. None of this mattered. She wasn’t the leader of a group, the killer of her own boss or even the Grand Duchess there. And he hadn’t done the things he had done in the past either. It had just been them. Which had only made reality hit harder once she got back. The woman had issues and those needed to be resolved, as she was barely keeping herself together. The thought of losing Kaz had only made this worse, but had made clear that she had a clear priority: him.
And that was exactly why she worked to pull herself together. Something Mort needed to do as well. “Then you’re going to fight, ” she told him. “Make up for what you have done. ” Apologies held no meaning and running from those you had harmed, only worsened everything. Or so the woman believed, at least. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, you could do something about it. And that was exactly what she felt Mort should do. If he didn’t, she would hunt him down and drag him back by the ear.
Mort had already told his sire to come to the castle. Like she always did when nervous, Allison pulled a hand through her hair before slowly nodding. “Good, ” she told him. Now what? What was she going to tell an elder vampire? “The two of us will need to have a little talk. ” she calmly mentioned. “For now, however, ” she went on, before falling quiet. It agitated her how little there was she could do. She wanted to stay by Kaz’ side for as long as he needed her to, but she also wanted to disappear into the library and find a way to fix this. She couldn’t do both.
And that was exactly why she worked to pull herself together. Something Mort needed to do as well. “

The way she was staring at him, made him slightly uncomfortable. It made him feel as if she thought he was about to run out and disappear again. Not this time. He would stay by his side, even if that meant hiding in the shadows and keeping his distance while he recovered. Because he would, he had to. The wounds would heal, both the physical ones as the mental ones. Kaz couldn’t be tamed or broken by anyone. It would take more time, but for vampires like them.. Time was on their side. He was just afraid that his brother wouldn’t want anything to do with him anymore as soon as he woke up. He promised not to fuck it up again and here they were.
If it hadn’t been for him, Kaz and Allison would have lead a normal, human life, without the worries they were dealing with now. The woman didn’t agree though. Or she did, but she had a whole different view on the situation than he had right now. She told him to make up for it, rather than keeping himself in the background because he thought that would be better. ”I will try. If he wants me to, that is. He hated me for what I did to him, you know, that whole situation. I bet he will want my head this time”, He said. He would have all the right to. And if it would help him, he wouldn’t even try to hide.
For now though, they couldn’t do anything else than wait for him to wake up. The man was the only one who could tell them what he needed, but he was still unconscious and he would probably be in that state for a while longer. Mort hoped Edmund would arrive soon. ”What are you going to talk about?” He dared to ask, not quite sure if this was one of those questions she wouldn’t want to answer again. He didn’t expect her to anger Edmund, though she was probably as emotional as he was at this point, and sometimes people then said things they shouldn’t say out loud.
”For now what? If there is anything I can do, please let me know”, He said, picking up on what she had said. If he could perhaps make himself useful for once, he would probably feel much better.

Surrounded, but always alone
So pick a place, pretend it's home
The higher you climb, the further you fall. But don't be ashamed of wanting it all. Cause the view from the top is beautiful but fleeting. Looks can be deceiving
She didn’t think of herself as a good person. Quite the contrary, actually. She was selfish. And it was exactly that selfishness that was driving her at this moment. Because she loved the broken mess that was behind that door and she needed him fixed. Because until he was, her heart was in pieces too. And she knew that this would be a task that might not be completed in her lifetime. Because the man carried a bag with him that was too heavy for her to carry. They would have to take out the content one by one, taking it step by step in the hopes of him not secretly filling it all up again. But, she’d have him. And that was all she needed.
With Mort, it was different. The two were family, so their bond was something else entirely. It was difficult to understand for her, as she had never felt that way about her family. She had never had a bond with any of them and she probably never would. A family was something she would never have. A saddening thought, but at least she wasn’t giving herself expectations that were impossible to meet. Giovanni had been the closest to a father she had ever had. And he was gone. So all she had left, was Kaz. And for that, she’d fight. Like she had always done and would always do.
Mort promised her that he would try, but spoke on. A faint smile appeared on her face as she raised a brow, but the usual confidence was long gone from her eyes. “And you think he’ll want to see me? ” she asked him, voice soft. Shaking her head softly, she looked for the words to say. “He’ll push me away. Or try to, at least, ” she told Mort. After all, Kaz had done the same when he had been turned into a vampire too. While she hoped he’d trust her and let her help him, she knew that would be an unrealistic expectation. “He’ll get over it. We will get through this. ” Together.
The topic switched to Edmund and she found her confidence again. A goal. She needed one and for now, Edmund was a way of getting it. Mort asked her what she was going to talk about, which caused a slight smirk on her face. “I am sure he and I will be able to come to an agreement, ” she calmly told Mort. “He will be fine, ” she reassured the boy. After all, he knew her opinion on vampires. There were more important matters at hand, however, and she was not planning on letting her feelings cloud her judgment. She needed Edmund. What she felt about what he was and how he was, was something for another time.
For now… It was a difficult sentence to finish and Mort wasn’t helping as he told her that she needed to let him know if he could help with anything. She knew how she would be in his position, so she slowly nodded. Doing things was better than sitting still. At least it gave you a sense of purpose. Feeling useless was even worse. “I’m going to be staying with him, ” she calmly started. She didn’t expect Mort to fight her on this, as he was right. There was a possibility that Kaz would turn his anger to Mort. Plus, they had only just gotten back to friendly terms. “I’d like it if you can stay around, however, ” she told him. “Blood won’t be enough to heal his wounds within a day so I am going to see what I can do. ” She had told Mort about her Alchemy. If she could relieve Kaz’ pain in any way, she would do so. “What I ask of you, is to make sure everything around here goes proper. Please. ” Did she just ask Mort to look after the entire castle? Possibly.
With Mort, it was different. The two were family, so their bond was something else entirely. It was difficult to understand for her, as she had never felt that way about her family. She had never had a bond with any of them and she probably never would. A family was something she would never have. DOWN IN THAT DARKNESS
you met all the things you feared
Tragedy seemed to follow the brothers like a shadow. They both hadn’t had the easiest childhood or youth. They didn’t get a break from the drama now either. How had it come this far? Why did it feel as if they had a target on their back? It was his fault that Kaz had been kidnapped and tortured to the point he was a broken mess. Was he beyond salvation? One thing was sure, he didn’t know where to start when it came to fixing him. Because he knew the blame was entirely on him. What had happened, was his fault. Allison compared their situations, but he didn’t quite feel like it was the same. ”The difference is that he doesn’t need to forgive you. He had to forgive me once, I don’t think he will a second time”, He said. But he wouldn’t run, no. Not again.
Naturally he was a bit nervous to have Edmund and Allison in the same room. They both had strong personalities.. And he knew Edmund wouldn’t bend his opinions for her, or the whole situation. She promised he would be fine though. So he nodded slowly. ”Just.. Just know he’s not as easily impressed as I am”, He said with a faint smile. He knew well enough it was easy to intimidate him. It was a flaw he was aware of, yet couldn’t change anything about it.
For now, they would have to find a way to fill the days while waiting for Edmund to arrive. He relied on Allison to come up with a plan. Which could be frustrating to her, but he was scared to propose the wrong things again. At this moment he didn’t trust his own brain. Luckily she seemed to have somewhat of an idea of what needed to happen. He listened carefully to what she was saying. ”Of course, I’m not going anywhere. I will take care of it”, He reassured her. Not only because he wanted to support his brother, but also because he wanted to be there for her. ”I will also see to it he has access to ehm.. You know, when he needs it”, He said, avoiding the word even though she had said it out loud herself. It still felt like it was a touchy subject, so he’d rather not trigger her with it.

Surrounded, but always alone
So pick a place, pretend it's home
The higher you climb, the further you fall. But don't be ashamed of wanting it all. Cause the view from the top is beautiful but fleeting. Looks can be deceiving
There was one difference, according to Mort, and it was one she was very well aware of. For she had played no part in this. While she deemed herself guilty for not being able to protect him, or find him sooner, she knew that she had no part in the events that had happened. There was no way he could blame her for it and thus, she had the best chance to get through to him without angering him. Because, the first response could very well be to fight. Something about the fight or flight response. And truthfully? They could use neither of those. But, they had to keep them in mind. “There is a second, ” she told him, a faint smile on her lips. “You’re family. He has forgiven you for turning him. He will forgive your naivety. ” Last time had been a whole lot more to forgive. Mort had not made a decision with Kaz’ life in mind this time. It had been dumb, but that was all it had been. Sheer naivety.
Edmund was not as easily impressed as Mort was and Allison couldn’t help but chuckle, even with everything that was happening. “I doubt anyone is as easily impressed as you are, Mort, ” she told him, mocking him with a smile on her face. “But I am not planning on using intimidation. I am well aware he means a lot to you, ” she calmly went on. “I just want some things cleared up. ” His sire was the one responsible for this mess. And he sure as hell was going to be the one to fix it too. And if he wasn’t willing to, she’d offer him something in return.
Mort promised to do as she asked and told her he’d make sure Kaz got fed. A thought that still sent that obvious shiver down her spine. Vampirism and Allison didn’t go quite well together. And while she tried to ignore it, she had never allowed herself to truly accept it. Something that, with time, she probably needed to do. Either that, or her marriage would be doomed to fail anyway. “I will make a list with things that have to be arranged daily, ” she told him calmly. “Don’t worry if it’s not done. Just… Try not to blow up the place. ” Somewhere, she only asked him to do this so he’d have something to do, rather than to sit still. She could have asked Faylice. Or Gareth. But neither of those needed the distraction. The bit of trust placed into them. A reason to stick around, yet do something other than sit here and worry.

DOWN IN THAT DARKNESS
you met all the things you feared
Best case scenario would be when Kaz would forgive the both of them for failing him. Though his mistake had been the whole reason why they were in this situation right now. It was a lot to think about, and he feared this time it had gone too far. They would only know for sure when he woke up. So they would have to be patient. It wouldn’t help to worry about it all the time. Allison tried to give him some courage as well. It helped to calm his nerves about the matter a little bit. As long as they would support each other in this, they would be good, right? Prepared for whatever Kaz would throw their way when he recovered.
And Edmund would take care of the rest. His comment made her chuckle, and when she teased him, he smiled lightly. ”That’s true”, He replied, shrugging his shoulders. He was glad she just wanted to have a normal conversation. ”I’m sure he will answer your questions. I wouldn’t be surprised if he felt responsible as well”, He continued. Perhaps he wouldn’t feel all too bad for Kaz personally, but he was his brother, so he expected him to react appropriately to the threat Isabella was.
In the meantime, he would take care of the castle. Luckily she would give him a list. ”Good. Because I have no idea what your job is exactly”, He said with a soft laugh. He saw her run around all the time, seemingly very busy with a lot of things. Knowing Allison, that wasn’t just for show. A list would also help him keep track of things. It was the ideal way of keeping himself occupied as well. Distraction while she was keeping an eye on Kaz. ”I think it’s best if I’m not here when he wakes up”, He then sighed. Two people around would be too much for him, he guessed. ”I’ll be in my room if you need me”, He continued with a soft smile. Afterwards, he looked at his brother one last time before turning around and making his way down the hallway.
