In depth: Romeo is one sick individual. He is a psychopath and can not be trusted. He uses people for his own advantage, gets angry very quick and isn't afraid of forcing others into doing things they don't want to. He blackmails, threatens, beats the fuck out of you, all for his entertainment or when he needs something from you. Towards strangers he is very calm, charming, a true romeo. But it’s all just a trick to win your trust. So don't fall for his charms, once he targets you, he won't let go.

The main reason for his behavior is how he was treated in the past. His mother was a very abusive woman who couldn't keep her hands of Romeo when he was a kid. His father failed to protect him, thereby breaking Romeo's trust. When he grew older, he got obsessed with being in control, being the one who set the boundaries and making sure people would respect those. This obsession got really out of hand, which results in the boy getting extremely mad when someone crosses his lines.

• FAITH

A huge aspect of Romeo’s existence is his faith in the Drowned God. He is pretty fanatic when it comes to his faith, and he recently started trying to convert people as well. He can be very persistent, and sometimes struggles to take ‘no’ for an answer. Especially towards people that believe in other fake Gods can drive his anger towards its peak. It’s not unusual for him to try and drown unbelievers, as a sacrifice for his God.

The faith of the Drowned God teaches the ironborn that they came from the watery halls of the Drowned God, and were created in his likeness. To reave, plunder, carve out kingdoms, make their names known in fire and blood and song and to hold dominion over all the waters of the earth. The ironborn believe that the Drowned God has fewer power the further removed from the sea they are. Even in strange lands where other gods are worshipped, some ironborn might believe that a large amount of men who have been drowned give the Drowned God strength in the area.

The belief system of the Drowned God justifies the ironborn practices of piracy and raiding. Followers of the Drowned God believe that He brought flame from the sea and that He created the ironborn to reave, raid, and pillage. Much of the religion centers around maritime skills and seafaring ability. It is not simply praiseworthy to kill enemies in battle, it is considered a pious act The religion also encourages paying the "iron price" instead of the "gold price" -- that is, it is better not to pay or trade for possessions, but to take them by force from the hands of dead enemies.

The common prayer exchanged by followers of the Drowned God states "What is dead may never die", with the responding line, "But rises again, harder and stronger". If one person begins this prayer, others are usually expected to join in. The prayer involves clutching the right hand in a fist over the heart.

Priests of the Drowned God are called Drowned Men. They anoint devotees using sea water, which is considered holy water in the religion. Infants are ceremonially "drowned" during a baptism rite by being briefly submerged in sea water, or by a priest pouring sea water over their head. Adults may also be anointed with sea water in this fashion, when receiving a blessing from one of the Drowned Men. To show real devotion, another type of drowning ceremony is used. It involves the Drowned Man actually drowning someone, holding them under the water until they stop breathing. They are then dragged ashore, where they begin to breathe again.

• HISTORY

There is nothing more pure than a young child. Believe it or not, but Romeo wasn't born a psychopath. His young childhood was pretty normal, until his mother swinged back into a manic depression when he was three years old. He used to be a sweet, innocent child. Polite, curious and friendly. It was easy for him to make friends, he was very flexible and could adjust himself to almost every situation. Except for the fact his mother hated him for no real reason. The woman had developed an intolerance to almost everything he did, and her punishments were harsh and painful. It was the first time but certainly not the last Romeo was abused by the people around him.

And it changed his behaviour, slowly but steadily. He started to dislike people, he lost his trust in his father. Even though he didn't have anything to do with how he was treated by his mother, he blamed him for not being there to protect him. The truth was, that the man was scared of his wife. She used to pick on him as well, and this destructive acts shifted to him when she relapsed. He wasn't as cheerful as he used to be, he lost his touch with his father and friends. In the meantime, the abuse and subtle manipulations went on and on, and he was trying desperately to get out of this bad situation. He strongly believed everything would get better when his mother got pregnant again.

But it didn’t. During her pregnancy her violence towards him only escalated. Most of the time the young boy was walking around with cuts and bruises all over his body, which left scars until this day. After the twins were born, things changed for the little family. His father ran away with the twin boys, leaving Romeo behind with his wife. He considered him to be a ‘lost cause’, already poisoned by the wicked practices of his mother. And in a way, he was right. The nine year old would never be the same again. He basically left him there to die. And he almost succeeded. His mother, a control freak just like him now, completely lost her mind when she found out her husband had taken her children and left.

To survive, he had to adapt. He didn’t feel safe at home, at all, so he turned to the streets. Not that it was a much better place, but in this environment he could defend himself. He was too scared of his mother to ever stand up for himself, but on the streets he could prove that he was strong and people would leave him alone. But it wasn’t easy for the young boy. He still suffered greatly, both physically and mentally. That went on for a while, until he met Maverick. The older man felt some sort of sympathy for him, and decided to teach him the ways of a sailor. With a lot of effort, he was allowed to bring Romeo into his crew. Later, the man would take over the ship and expand his power, which was only beneficial for him.

Maverick’s ambition reflected greatly on the boy, and when he was getting older he felt the same hunger for power and control. By now, his maritime skills were improved, but his manipulative traits had grown as well. He is now the man we know today. He also turned to the Drowned God for guidance, which pushed him into piracy even more. By the time he was 22, he took faith into his own hands and arranged a mutiny on the ship he was currently working on. The crew accepted him as the new Captain and from that day the White Shark was under his command.
