A small girl was scourging the busy and lively streets of Sunfall. A place which captivated tourists. It was her luck that on one such a busy day, Zanna decided to get a try on pickpocketing. Something that would probably go unnoticed if no one knew what she did. Keeping unnoticed and under the radar and making sure not to steal anything from pirates. Those were a hardy and dangerous folk. Her long, wavy and dirty brown hair cascaded down her back while she ran just a bit playfully across one of the many small streets. The cold winter sun shone down her back when she picked up a small coin that one had lost. It was not as if she could buy much with it, it was almost worth next to nothing. Still it was a coin and it was hers; finder, keeper.

What one had to do to survive the streets one would do. Zanna was only eight years old and already lived on the sometimes dangerous streets for a few weeks. Her father had died in one of those pub fights while leaving his only daughter to fend for herself. He had tried to love her, very hard; but in the end he had just loved himself more. His wife had died and with that the reason to stay alive and clean of alcohol had vanished. The young, innocent looking girl supressed shivers while thinking about her father and missmatched family. Dark brown eyes searched the streets for tourists. One old female, a lady that walked the streets with great vigour would be her next victim. Zanna had no choice other then to fend for herself. If she didn't make money, if she didn't make sure she had something to eat and drink, no one would. The little girl was welcomed for a short amount of time in a household of an elderly lady whom had lived close by and cared for her after her mother had passed away while giving birth to her baby brother. She had been a sister for not even a few seconds, for her brother had been a stillborn. She did not know anything about family. Zanna however did know how to survive and was fairly intelligent.

While the old looking woman stopped in front of one of the many shops adourning the long streets, Zanna slipped her hand in the bag and took out the wallet which she managed to hide under her thin jacket. She walked by the older lady while moving her innocent eyes towards the friendly face. "Good morning," she shyly whispered before moving along the street in the opposite direction  then the woman was going. She sincerely hoped she didn't need to steal much more today. It could be dangerous being alone on the streets and if it came to fighting a young child like she had no chance. While searching the streets for a good alley to rest, since she had been up all night, the girl felt eyes scorching in her back. Slowly she turned around to look into the eyes of a dark looking and tattooed man.

Don't get attached.

He had decided to move on from Brightwater Keep and travel to Sunfall. He had the feeling people started to recognize him in the city and that was never a good thing when your job was to steal from people. Of course, it could just be his paranoia talking, but it was better to be safe than sorry. Besides, he started to hate the town and it's fishy smell. There were much better places to be and today he was trying to find out if Sunfall was one of them. He had heard many great stories about the city and its history, but now he was seeing it with his own eyes. it was true waht they said, if you didn't know where you were headed, you could get lost easily. Kaz had the feeling he was walking in circles, but he always maanged to get back on the main road, which was littered with vendors and other salespeople, trying to sell their wares. This town was a town of trades and Kaz felt at home.
These busy streets were perfect for a small inconvenience for other people, for Kaz it was an oppertunity. He just had to be at the right place at the right time. And all the time he was waiting for that time, he had a smile on his face. Kaz never really smiled, especially not when he was happy. Was he ever happy? Was this what this feeling was? Better not to think long enough of it before he got all confused again and his day would be ruined. Even though it was just morning, the sun was already high enough to give off some warmth and Kaz wasp leased that he for once wasn't cursing the damn weather. Winter couldn't pass soon enough for him.

He passed many people selling their wares, but only when he reached one of the busiest streets of Sunfall, he thought about getting to work. He had a long day ahead of him and it would be nice to start it with a full bag of gold. Morning meant that people would be doing their groceries, maybe going to a bakery to get their bread for today. It was a nice moment to just slip into someones pocket and relieve them of the heavy burden of choosing which bread they liked best. Because if they couldn't pay for it, they didn't have to choose. The smells made him hungry, but Kaz was focused. He limped through the streets, avoiding the middle part where people rushed through. He didn't want to be an inconvenience to any one, well not a bigger one than he already was. His blue eyes looked over the people standing at the stores and his eyes stopped wandering when he sa an old woman. Ah, old people, this was easy. Kaz followed the path he had said out for himself, sometimes letting his eyes wander, but they always went back to the old woman. That was, until he noticed the tiny hand that slipped into the woman's purse. A tiny hand that belonged to a tiny child that smiled and directly walked away. Did she just..? For a moment, Kaz had to gather himself again. It didn't happen often someone struck before he did. But he was bad luck anyway. With interest, he kept on walking, not letting the child out of his sights. Eventually, she felt his eyes poking in her back and she turned around. She looked too innocent for these kind of crimes, she was too young. But Kaz knew what one had to do to survive, he'd been there. ''That wasn't very nice of you.'' He said after a few moments of exchanging stares, with a soft tone. ''You sure must know that stealing isn't a very good thing to do.'' He leaned a bit on his cane, his eyebrows raised, yet his eyes were soft, almost trying to understand her. This was very unlike him, but in a way, this child reminded him of his past, the way he had tried to survive. It hit a spot in him that he had forgotten he had.

After Zanna felt eyes burn in her back, she could not ignore the feeling of being followed. Her brown innocent eyes gazed at his; before looking slightly uncomfortable. She did not like being stared at and that was what had happened besides that the young man looked dark with his tattoos. After a few moments of holding eachother's gaze the man spoke. "That wasn't very nice of you." He said, his voice soft and maybe even kind. Somehow the young child felt as if his behaviour did not fit him. As if he should behave differently. "You sure must know that stealing isn't a very good thing to do." He stated. Zanna's eyes barely hid the surprise she felt at his statement and slowly she lowered her eyes towards the ground in an uncomfortable silence. If she had looked at him; she would have seen him leaning on his cane with his eyebrows raised and an even more surprisingly soft look upon his face. All that Zanna did not notice for she was to busy staring at her feet after which she swallowed uneasily.

"Starving isn't nice as well?" She whispered after clearing her throat. Most people on the streets were living their lifes without sharing a second glance towards those living on the streets. Zanna had no choice in her way of living as she was to young to work for money. Besides that she had no family that could care for her. If she would have any of them ready to take care of her, she would not trust them to do so. Her tiny hands moved to protect her stomach after which her dark brown eyes raised to meet the eyes of the young man. It was strange to see one his age with a cane. Wasn't a cane something for the elderly? The intelligent girl didn't trust him but at the same time she didn't feel scared either. His appearance didn't add up to the way he was acting. However as she was young and innocent she did not know everything she had to know and was supposed to know if she wished to survive the streets. It was a harsh life.

Kaz never really had been font of children. They were too loud, reckless and always got in the way. But you always had teh outcasts, the silent ones, the weirdos. Come to think of it, Kaz never really discovered where he belonged. His life was already turned upside down well before he set his foot inside a school. It was a miracle he could read and do maths. But one could overcome any obstacle if he had enough willpower to do so. That was, if your obstacle wasn't a wall in Kaz's case, because climbing had never really been his forté. He rather stuck to the familiar ground of the streets and paths of the woods.
The girl in front of him was shy, was she afraid? No, it didn't look like that. It felt like a mix with embarassement. Because he had caught her? Because she thought she could've done better? Or because her morals got in her way? She was an enigma Kaz would love to discover. Her soft voice made him chuckle and he lightly shook his head. ''Very smart.'' He returned, his eyes looking around for a short moment before reverting back to her. ''That's the spirit.'' He smiled, limping a little bit closer to her. With some effort, and with a face that made clear that the movement wasn't painless, he bend through his knees, until he was at the same height as her. ''What is your name little spider?'' He asked with the same soft tone in his voice, his eyes examening every inch of her face. Her innocence was so sweet it almost corrupted him. How lbeen since he had seen this? The fact the girl was out on the streets stealing, made clear her history wasn't as pure as she looked, which only made her more fit for the job.

She might be shy and uncomfortable around strangers; especially since she had a sense of being self-preserving. No one would protect her except from herself. Her life had started of as a hard and dark one but her eyes showed the innocence that she maintained. No matter her experiences. Shy as she was, Zanna just barely managed to declare the dark looking man that she thought starving wasn't nice as well. A soft chuckle was released by the stranger while he shook his head lightly. A soft innocent and shy smile tipped the corner of her mouth upwards in a smile. "Very smart." He exclaimed. Which made Zanna shrug a little. She was not totally stupid. People who ignored her intelligence only to find it out later on. She could be dangerous to ones money, what wasn't kept away from her tiny and fast hands. He looked around the somewhat calm street before his eyes reverted back to Zanna. "That's the spirit." He smiled, which made him look kinder and softer in a way. Somehow this made the young girl relax in his presence. He might pretend about some of his characteristics for she had learned a long time ago that adults could lie easily, but he seemed to be generous because he wished to be. Plenty of others would have scolded her more firmly. Limping a little bit closer to her, after which he bend through his knees. Kneeling in front of her, he seemed to be in pain and that tugged strangely at her innocent and warm heart. Why was he hurting, while making such a normal move. "What is your name little spider?" He asked with his soft voice that did wonders in calming her down. Zanna couldn't explain it, but she somewhat trusted him. If he had wished to harm her, he would have done so already. "Zanna", She muttered with her soft and high pitched childish voice. His eyes examined her face and slowly the girl reached out her left hand to touch his gloved hand. "You?" Her voice sounded like chimebells and kind but also curious. Who was the stranger and why was he interested in a girl like her? She did not trust him enough to give her name Zuzana. Instead she decided to go by one of  her nicknames. He still could turn out to be dangerous..

How bad were these streets really= As a thief it was wise to know your surroundings, to make sure that every move you made, was also a move that offered an escape. The streets in Sunfall had many alleyways and small cobblestone paths that would lead to complete different terrain. The small canals with their many boats made it hard to get through, but maybe you could hop on one from another. Kaz rather liked to disappear in the crowds and walk with every direction they were going and eventually slip in a narrow alley to avoid any confrontations. Until now, that had worked perfectly, but perhaps it was nice to have an accomplice with him, someone like her.
It wasn´t until the girl - Zanna - touched his hand that he got back to focussing on the real world again. How stupid it was to get lost in thoughts. This was not the place nor the time for it. Kaz smiled again, taking her hand in his and shaking it a little. ''Good to meet you Zanna. My name is Kaz.'' He didn't go by his old name anymore. It brought back memories he wanted to forget, that were no longer his to keep. He reassured his position and shuffled a bit with his feet, feeling his leg ache. ''How long have you been on the streets? Don't you have a home to go back to?'' He informed with that same, soft voice. People passed by them, only akknowledging them shortly, before continueing their days. To them it would probably just look like a brother comforting his sister, that was, if you didn't look long enough and didn't notice his dark look. Maybe it was for the best Kruge wasn't here now.

The older guy seemed to be lost in thoughts, which made the young girl reach out to him. Living on the streets was dangerous and harsh, if one got lost in thought one to many times, one could get seriously hurt. Zanna was used to be alone and though she knew it would probably be better to have someone else look out for her as well; she hadn't trusted anyone to come close to her. She knew that she couldn't stay under the radar for ever. Somewhere and somehow someone would notice her and there would no doubt be a time she got into trouble. Mere luck and her intelligence had kept her out of too much trouble for now. However one could always run out of luck by being at the wrong place at the wrong time. The dark looking young man smiled when she introduced herself, and took her hand in his; before shaking it. "Good to meet you Zanna. My name is Kaz." He exclaimed. A soft smile was all he got from Zanna before she closely examined his way of moving. He seemed to reassure his position, as if his leg was hurting. Slowly her eyes rised to meet his but before she could ask him a question; he asked one himself. "How long have you been on the streets? Don't you have a home to go back to?" He informed with the same soft voice he had used when he spoke to her for the first time. It was a voice that made her think about calm ribbling water; dangerous water. For the deepest waters, who looked the calmest were sometimes the most dangerous ones. People passed by, but didn't seem to notice that this was an unusual situation. They probably thought both of them were siblings and he was helping his younger one. Maybe it was the somewhat darker hair that made others not look twice before moving further down the street. Zanna shook her head, no. "A few weeks." She only told him, if he had been here before her father had died; he would have probably heard the rumors. He had been killed during a pub fight. Apparantly he had been too drunk to safe his own life. Not that he had actually been that kind to Zanna. Though she still missed her father and the warm house she had lived in. Her eyes darkened just a little bit before she looked around. "How did you know?" She asked him, how did he know she had no home to call her own?

It would just be a matter of time before Kaz would leave this city again and moved onto the next one. He liked his travels, no matter how inconvenient they were for his leg. But it was a way to keep his paranoia at bay and to reassure himself everything would be alright. He wouldn't be found by her, he wouldn't get caught by the ones who were looking for him. It was inbetween the cities and villages, Kaz felt free the most. It was then that he sometimes let his emotions out, to annoyance from Kruge. Kaz knew the crow would stay with him as long as he had to, as long as Kaz didn't deal with his problems. He knew it would only be a matter of time before the things of the past would be knocking at his door. And if that happened, Kaz wanted to be as far away from any civilization he could. That may sound drastic, but Kaz knew very well what he was capable of.
A few weeks was her answer. Just a few weeks. She had so much to learn and yet, she knew a lot already. But the question rose what had happened that she ended up on the streets. She was probably an orphan, or ran away from an abusive home. Maybe one of her parents tried to sell her for money they could invest into drinking. There were endless posibillities in towns like these, he would find out eventually. A faint smile lay on his lips when she asked him the question how he knew. ''It's the look a person has in their eyes. Their movements. They are insecure, yet persistent, because they need to survive.'' He told her, letting go of her hand. ''I can help you get rid of those insecurities. I can make sure you have a roof over your head.'' A strange offer from a strange man, but he had good intentions. Or well, he told himself they were good. Learning a child how to steal and possibly murder someone was maybe frowned upon. But Kaz meant it well and that was what mattered. Right?

Zanna knew she was supposed to stray from strangers. Especially since there were a lot of dangerous people. Like murderes and pirates. Most people on the street were stronger then she was, for she was just a child caught up in a bad situation. Still she knew better then to ask for help from strangers, for you never knew when it would bite you and what they had in mind for you. Most didn't help only out of the good of their hearts. Maybe they felt like selling her or having her work for their cause. The possibilities were endless. Instead of straying away, the young girl asked Kaz how he had known she had been living on the streets. "It's the look a person has in their eyes. Their movements. They are insecure, yet persistent, because they need to survive." He explained. Zanna hadn't seen a mirrow in a while so she didn't know the look on her face but understood it well enough from his description. She was shy and insecure, knew that she very while could strive into dangerous territoria. Kaz let go of her hand which she then moved through her long windblown hair. "I can help you get rid of those insecurities. I can make sure you have a roof over your head." He offered, it was a strange offer for maybe even a stranger man. Still the girl felt that even though if she said yes, she might endanger herself. She also knew that she would need the protection he could give her. Even though he walked with a cane, his vibe would probably keep a lot of people away. She chew her lip for a moment, deep in thought before she answered. Her movement seemed more fitting of an adult then a child. "What do you ask for in return? She whispered, her soft voice sounded calm but at the same time thoughtful.

How lucky she was she had encountered him. No one wanted to see a child growing up on the streets, trying to survive on anything they could grab their little hands on. It were mostly the street kids that turned out to be huge problems later on life. Kaz knew all too well. Though, he had to say that he wasn't that big of a problem, right? He wasn't a menace to society, he didn't terrorize the streets and formed gangs to bully people. No, he was a delicate, young man who just saw a whole in the market and tried to make the best of it. Sure, his job wasn't really an honest one and he probably wasn't really liked or a hero from the people, far from that, but he just lived day by day. He was nice to people, he helped them get rid of the belongings he knew they secretly didn't need anyway and meanwhile had a nice little life on his own. It might not be peaceful, but Kaz could manage and on days like these he was glad he didn't have a boring 9 to 5 job which was the same every day.
Zanna was smart. She knew that if someone offered something, they mostly wanted something in return. Kaz didn't blame her. If you grew up on the streets, it was probably the best to second guess yourself and to always be skeptical of people. Kaz shrugged slightly. ''Not much for now.'' He started, looking at her directly, his face a bit more serious. ''Just that you help me from time to time with a job. You already have shown a lot of potential. I can make sure you learn the tricks of the trade as well as I know them.'' He smiled, his eyebrows a bit raised, hoping his offer would be enough. She was just a child, but later she could be so much more, given the right push into the right direction.

He didn't seem to mind that she was skeptical. Everyone seemed to want something in return of their service. She didn't have a lot to give except for her life maybe and no one wished for a life debt. Kaz shrugged like the question didn't seem to interesting for him. He wished to help her and learn her, and while she knew she had a lot to learn to survive the streets without to mamy problems, she didn't trust a guy on his word. Her father had told her he loved her and in the end he had loved his drink more. As well as the fact that his only son, the one he had been proud of to get, had been stillborn. He did have a softer spot for his only daughter and living child; but he had loved her mother more and never spared a glance at her. He ignored her more then he gave attention. It could have been worse if not for the lady next door but it wasn't home without him. Could she maintain amd make her own home, with some stranger? "Not much for now." He started his voice calm while he looked her directly in the eye. His face was serious which made her concious of the fact that she would make an important decision. One that your normal eight year old wouldn't and shouldn't make. Zanna wasn't normal, she was a child of the street and they had different rules. "Just that you can help me from time to time with a job. You already have shown a lot of potential. I can make sure you learn the tricks of the trade as well as I know them." Kaz explained her. The young child looked at him as thoughtful as she could though a small, tiny smile was seen on her face. The corner of her lips raised just by a millimetere. She saw his raised eyebrows and was slightly amused by that. He seemed to be really serious and confident at that moment. "Alright but I will go wherever you go. Since I do not want to be left in a dangerous situation by myself." The girl sounded almost adult like, which was exactly what the harsh life she had lived made her act like even though she of course would and could not understand everything like politics.

Her innocence could also mean that she had no idea what she was getting herself into. He could do whatever he liked with her and in the end leaver her where she belonged. He just wasn't sure where that was yet. But for now, there was so much to be discovered, so much to learn, for the both of them. Kaz knew that whatever he was doing now, would bite him in the ass eventually. Kids could change their minds so easily, so he had to be careful. He couldn't invest too much in her, yet. Kaz had the time and the patience and he would make sure this would become his masterpiece. Children learned so much faster and had to ability to remember most of it. Unlike some other.. almost adults. The thought of Daniel compared to Zanna almost made him laugh. She already seemed so much better. Sh just had to grow up and this would be all he needed.
Kaz smiled broadly this time, almost flashing his teeth, opening his hand for a shake. ''I will make sure none of that will ever happen to you. You stick with me and you'll be safe.'' He spoke with honesty, for once. Even though his intentions in the end, weren't the purest, he somewhere wanted to protect this girl from the dangers these streets could hold. Where did this sudden brotherly instinct come from? Was it because of Georgie? Because Kaz felt he had come short on caring for someone? No, get that thought of your damn head. This was to be an investment, not self pity. Focus Kaz and for once, think positively, how hard that even might be.

Kaz smiled broadly, almost flashing his teeth, which made the young girl look at him strangely. He opened his hand for her to shake. Her tiny warm hand reached out slowly before she shook it. Zanna knew that with her decision she could be better off then when she would be alone, the question however was if she trusted the right guy with her safety. Then again, her father hadn't been the best parent either and she was used to dealing with life on her own. If he tried something she could always run away from him or search for some kind of sheriff. Those wouldn't be too difficult to find. If one knew where to look for information and how. Her dark brown eyes moved across his face and rested at one of his dark tattoos. "I will make sure none of that will happen to you. You stick with me and you'll be safe." He promised after they shook each other's hand. Her brown eyes were much too serious for an eight year old but also calm and innocent. Her innocence could be her downfall if not used rightly. People used each other in times like this and even if they were just enjoying life. In many relationships one came out of it better then the other. Though Zanna didn't know such things. Kaz seemed to be honest at least about her safety, it would only be a matter of him holding his word. For she would. The streets seemed to get busier and Zanna knew they had to get moving before people started to notice them more. Besides that she had been far too long without sleep. Without a word being spoken the young girl tugged at his hand. Maybe she could steal a thing or two before reaching a much more safe destination. Busy streets like this one weren't good streets to be at if one wished to get some rest. Her brown eyes flickered along some faces of tourist hurrying by. Her eyes singled out a couple busy taking care of their own children. Without keeping attention to the enviroment. The same mistake the elderly woman had made.

Don't get attached.

She shook his hand a bit hesitantely and before she let go, Kaz made their grip a little more intense. ''But do know Zanna,'' he started, his eyes darkening for a moment, ''that if you even think of turning your back on me, your going to worry a lot more about other things than safety.'' Kaz meant it. He didn't like to be doublecrossed, no matter if he had done it before. Call it hypocritical, Kaz knew very well what people could be up to these days. They were untrustworthy, rude and would flee as soon as they smelled danger. He had been one of those people, he knew very well how he started out, but that didn't mean he wasn't prepared for the people who would do the exact same. He let go of her hand, his dark look disappearing.
Kaz noticed the tired look on her face, this girl must've been awake for quite some time now. ''I'm renting a room not far from here, we can go there if you want to rest.'' He said with a soft tone. He got up, glad to be finally free of that painful position he was in, eventhough it just had been a couple of minutes. The tug at his hand came as a surprise and Kaz followed Zanna's eyes. The family, the carelessness, the oppertunity. So young and already so aware of her surroundings. Kaz smiled mischievously and nodded. ''Show me what you've got.'' Was his answer at her tug, motivating her to try. He had only seen her from a distance and even then he wasn't really paying attention since he was concentrated on forming up a plan himself. Now was a great chance and Kaz was eager to see.

Zanna shook Kaz's hand, just as she wished to relax the grip; Kaz made it a little more intense. "But do know Zanna," He started, while his eyes darkened a little. Zanna swallowed while looking at him in question. "That if you even think of turning your back on me, your going to worry a lot more about other things than safety." He meant his words, she just had to take one look at his face to know it. He was dangerous and didn't allow her to act out. If he was to help her, she had to prefend herself from acting out and doublecrossing him. He was danger but because of that he was safety as well. "You keep me safe and I will not turn my back on you." She calmly stated, though Zanna had a frown on her face. She knew she treaded on dangerous ground. Her decision was one she would have to live with for a long time. After her promise to him, he softened his grip on her hand; before he seemed to notice the exhaustion. "I'm renting a room not far from here, we cam go there if you want to rest." Kaz said with his softer voice, though Zanna didn't doubt that his voice could sound quite dark, dangerous as well. He got up from the position he had been in, one that seemed to be uncomfortable for him, and though he didn't show it on his face; he seemed happy to be free of the position he had been in. The tug at his hand got Kaz's attention, without Zanna speaking to him she managed to get him look at the couple. He smiled mischievously, seeming to notice the apportunity. "Show me what you've got." Was his answer, to soft for others to hear. He motivated her to try it, and she smiled shyly before letting go of his hand. Then she playfully and innocently rushed across the street to keep the intention from others. Her soft laugh was heard across the street while she took in some products from the vendors; while keeping her eyes on the couple. The man seemed interested in the stuff the vendor had. Zanna slipped her hand in the bag before taking out some money and hiding it. Since the vendor was busy with another customer; he didn't notice one of his next customers being robbed. After her succesfull pickpocketing, the young girl playfully moved back towards Kaz and took his hand while giving him the money with another.
