So pick a place, pretend it's home
The higher you climb, the further you fall. But don't be ashamed of wanting it all. Cause the view from the top is beautiful but fleeting. Looks can be deceiving
The words of the woman were enough to explain what had happened, though she didn’t quite understand how. “He managed to kill his traitors? ” she asked calmly. Would she? An interesting question. There was no doubt in her mind that Kaz would. Any who posed a threat to her, would probably die by his hands. But would she actually want them to die? Probably. Maybe not. It was a situation she tried to avoid no matter what, which explained certain things she had done up until now. Like actually making an effort to increase the quality of life for those working for her. Like befriending those who had befriended the Duke. All she had to do to keep her back free of stabs.
Allison had wanted to ask another question, but the door opened. The maid made a slight bow before entering the room, placing the two glasses on the table and pouring some wine, before putting the two bottles on the table as well and taking a step back. “Thank you, ” she thanked her, as friendly as she always seemed to sound. “I want you to leave and not let anyone in. This conversation is to be had in private, ” she calmly spoke. This time, there was a vague threat behind her words. The woman better not fail in her duty of keeping any idiot who wanted to enter, out of this room. She watched the woman as she left, waiting until the door closed behind her.
“Why did he leave one alive? ” was her next question. If he killed all the others, what was the point in leaving one alive? Didn’t he want to rule anymore? Had he accepted the fact that his throne was to be taken over, but decided who would take it? She did not quite understand the mindset behind it and she was curious. And, in a way, she had every right to be. If her father was kicked off the throne, shedding blood while he did so, there was no wondering about what the woman was asking of her. Sanctuary. She wanted to be safe. And Allison had every right to deny this request if she didn’t give her the answers she needed.
Allison had wanted to ask another question, but the door opened. The maid made a slight bow before entering the room, placing the two glasses on the table and pouring some wine, before putting the two bottles on the table as well and taking a step back. “

For a moment Faylice let her shoulders down, letting her upper body cave in as her eyes were fixated on the table. Trying to find every shred of strength she seemingly didn’t have in her body. Searching for the courage to tell on, to answer the questions, to tell on about what had happened. But the more she spoke, word after word, the more it teared open the places she didn’t want to feel anymore. She had to, that’s wat Fay told herself, while taking a deep breath in. Straightening her back, siting upright as she told herself she could just push past it all. That she could be strong enough to tell and that she just had to push the pain away. ’Yes,’ Fay said, calculated as she found some of the strength again. ’Bare handed.’ She added after, taking another breath, pushing herself to just keep doing that.
Fay saw how Allison attempted to ask again, probably further, and with that further than Fay would’ve wanted to. But she held in, with the door opening. She turned around, seeing the maid come in with the, now very welcome bottles of wine and the two glasses. Nodding politely to the maid she smile just as neatly to her. She always treated the people who had worked for her with respect, and even though she wasn’t in her own castle, she still did. The serious words from Allison made her look up to the woman again, tilting her head slightly as her ice blue eyes observed for a moment.
Grabbing one of the glasses, she raised it and nodded towards Allison as a little thank you. Taking a sip right after, and enjoying the taste of the wine while she swallowed it through. One glass couldn’t be that bad, right? She had a wine before, and it almost always started to go downhill after just three of them, so the one would just maybe take the edge off. With the thought, Fay took a second sip before putting it back on the table in front of her. ’He knew the last one a little better, I don’t know it exactly.’ Faylice went on, frowning on the subject for a moment while thinking about how she could describe it the best. ’He made a bloodbath, the last council member talked him out of killing him. That’s what I know,’ She paused again, looking up at Alllison. ’he vanished after.’

Apparently, the King had killed his Council. And not only that, he had done so barehanded. Which raised another question. “He’s not human, is he? ” she calmly asked, though she already knew the answer. “What is he? ” she followed. The woman had spent her life studying the supernatural. She was well aware of the strength a vampire or werewolf possessed. Killing an entire council with nothing but your bare hands… sounded like the work of a vampire, though an angry wolf could do the exact same. Precisely why she had wanted to rid the world of these creatures.
Sadly, the world had turned against her and the man she loved had turned into a vampire. The brunette still struggled with this, even though she tried not to show. She wasn’t quite sure what part of it was a problem to her. Was it truly so that she saw him as a monster, or did her problem lie with the fact that she had lost her one purpose in life? The one thing that had given her a goal for as long as she remembered? The first option had been the easiest, but wasn’t anymore. As the first option meant she’d lose Kaz, while the second meant she’d lose herself. An option that should have been clear: cut out the man, live following your own principles. Sadly, she was well aware that losing him, meant losing herself as well. So perhaps, one day, she would accept the second option.
Faylice explained what had happened and Allison nodded calmly. “So he is no longer King and you are seeking sanctuary in my land, ” she spoke, taking a sip from her wine. “Or was there something else you wanted to ask of me? ” She had, after all, only made an assumption. Perhaps the woman wanted more, wanted Rhoynar to assist her in a fight to get Navarre back. Sadly, if that was the case, Allison would be unable to help. She was not planning on going to war with any of the neighbouring countries.

While the subject changed into what had happened in those last days of Thriumph being king, Fay her thoughts brought her back immediately. She didn’t know exactly what happened, because she had spent most of her time being alone in her room. Being too scared to go out, too scared to talk or seek for a way out. But rumours travelled so fast within the castle walls, and with the silence of her father, she dared to step out a little more. Demanding that she would know the whole story, and she got at least the most of it. Not that she was really able to hear any more than after the fact he vanished. But, considering everything, it was enough to tell Allison about. Her statement on how her father had killed the whole council, apart from one, was a conscious one. It raised the exact question she expected to be asked, making her smile faintly. Her fingers traces the edge of the glass, as her eyes were fixated on it. ’No, he’s a vampire.’ The warm voice toned down into an even softer one, swallowing just before. Speaking the words alone made a cold shiver run down her spine, giving Fay the perfect excuse to take another sip from her wine.
Her explanation came out in short pieces, shreds of information. Faylice wasn’t sure if it all made at least a little bit of sense, but the only one that could decide that was the woman in front of her. Fay wondered if Allison was aware that this was the very first time she had to explain what had happened. She wondered if it sounded like that at all, or if her nerves really didn’t show through in the way she felt them run through her body. She didn’t know, and she asked herself if she would ever. So for now, Fay just had to push past, make her statement and hope for the best. Because what else could she do? She essentially came here, with nothing on hands, not even a position. Her fate was out of her hands, something she preferably wanted to have control on. So when the words were spoken, Faylice looked up. Her ice blue eyes staring at the ones of Allison. ’For now, that is the only thing I desire.’ Fay spoke nothing but the truth, opening up with the biggest optimism it wouldn’t be crushed.

A vampire. Allison had already started to sympathise with the woman as she told her story, but this made it even more so. After all, the woman had been raised to hate vampires. Had spent her life figuring out ways to end them. A quest she had been forced to put a stop to, as the man she loved had been turned into a vampire. Ever since then, she had been spending time with two vampires. One was a goodie two shoes in every possible way, trying not to hurt anyone. The other was Kaz, who had shown the true nature of a vampire. Yet, he had never even attempted to hurt her. And that was why she had started to believe that her beliefs might have been wrong, causing an entire crisis in her mind. What was she to believe now? Who was good, what was bad? All her beliefs had come from Giovanni, whose life had been ruined by the monsters. Alllison had sympathised with them, and now it was time to do so with Faylice.
Luckily, Faylice seemed to want nothing but sanctuary. For now, at least. Allison nodded slowly, leaning back in her chair as she finished her glass of wine, simply pouring the next. “Why should I give you what you want, ” she started, speaking slowly and pausing for a few seconds before speaking on. “While I could strengthen my relationship with the new King by having you delivered to his doorstep? ” she asked. Another sip was taken from her drink as she raised a brow, curiosity visible in her eyes. She wasn’t planning on turning this woman in, that had already been decided. But that didn’t mean that she didn’t want anything in return.

After speaking out loud that her father was a vampire, she almost wanted to pray Allison wouldn’t ask further. If there was something she knew, and could confirm it was that single piece of information. In fact, Fay didn’t need the word go on about, she didn’t need to ask about it. Search for witnesses that maybe heard something in the hallways. Because she herself had been the witness. She had seen it happen, her father had forced her to see, for reasons she couldn’t comprehend. The dark haired lady could probably tell every single detail, minute after minute. On how he got turned and how she got involved, got pulled into. How she saw the last bit of father she had disappear, vanish as he turned into the monster he really was. Fay could’ve known, she had seen his ways before, deeply down she knew it wasn’t that big of a surprise. But to see it like that, right in front of her eyes. Another cold shiver ran down her spine, while Fay tried to push away the thoughts as the conversation continued.
Luckily for her, it went off the subject. Softly the lady let out a sigh over her lower lip, finding the glass again and taking a bigger sip than the previous one. Taking another to finish the glass as she saw Allison finish hers, placing it next to her glass after. The question the woman in front of her made the corners of her mouth curl up in a little smile. Now it progressed into the politics of everything, something Faylice was used to in her whole life dealing her status. Calmly she grabbed her glass again, making the wine swirl for a few moments. While patiently waiting until Allison was done with speaking. The gaze of Fay held the one of the brunette, taking a sip of her wine before answering. ’Because it would provide the king nothing, nothing more than he has now at least.’ She heard the threat in the words the lady in front of her spoke, but she wasn’t afraid of them. It were logical ones, and Fay would probably ask the same if she was in Allison her position. No, she was definitely not ready to go back just yet, but she didn’t knew that, not yet at least. ’I spoke to him, we are on good terms, and so I wouldn’t think it is necessary for you to deliver me to him.’ Slowly and calculated she spoke, before sipping on the wine again.

Allison had always been the person negotiating, making deals. So, she tried to do the same now. Tried to find out what she could get out of this, just to allow herself to care. She sat back in her chair, crossing her legs and raising a brow as she took another sip of her drink. It was a danger to take anyone in. Especially if this person was once a princess, someone that could be used as leverage to the previous King of the land. Though she didn’t know if the monster would actually care about his daughter enough to make it a proper leverage. No matter what - if the woman had nothing to offer, it would be the wisest decision if Allison would kick her out of the castle, tell her to find her sanctuary somewhere else. In reality, however, the Duchess had already decided to take the woman in. Perhaps for selfish reasons: she could use a woman her age around here. Someone who didn’t work for her. Someone she’d be able to talk to.
And there it was. Faylice was on good terms with the new King of Navarre. Which changed the whole situation. The woman wasn’t fleeing from the new King. “You’re fleeing from your past life. From your father, ” she noted calmly, leaning forward again and placing her elbow on the table, taking another sip of her drink. “Interesting, ” she mumbled, looking at the wine in her glass as she frowned. She noticed that she wasn’t quite as perceptive as usual. The alcohol had started to get to her head and it was not a good thing. “I could give you what you’re asking for, ” she spoke, staring into her glass as if it held the answers to life. “But what will I get out of this? ” Another sip. Not a good idea.

If there was something Fay was good at, being it one thing of the few, it were the political tactics behind any statement. Even though Faylice never wanted to be a royal, never wanted to be pushed around by her father as much as he did, as much as had happened, she always had been one. Somewhere halfway in between she accepted the whole thing, maybe not completely, but enough to get to know where she stood at all times. It was a pretty vital point in keeping herself alive, especially since she escaped the castle, being on herself from time to time. So when the conversation shifted on what she was actually doing here, what Allison could do for her and vice versa, she could feel herself getting more at ease. Now it wasn’t talking about her experiences, now it was just about the future and how the both of them would proceed into getting what they wanted.
Her knowing the new king, who didn’t wanted her dead immediately, was a exceptionally good thing for the dark haired lady. It gave her the position of not being in a great kind of danger into getting caged and send right back. Even though she really was fleeting Navarre, the woman in front of her didn’t know how much she really wanted that. It was something Fay was desperate for, but that wasn’t a thing for now anyway. Shortly, Fay gazed in her glass before taking another sip. The first glass had been emptied pretty fast, the second didn’t go any slower. The words from Allison made her smile a little, following the movements she made as she took another sip herself. ’Correct, particularly my father.’ She simply noted, sniffing on her comment about it afterwards. The lady began to feel the wine, which already was a very bad sign looking at the rate she was drinking more of it. At least it made the words flow out a little bit easier, nothing wrong with that, right?
It seemed like the brunette in front of Fay began to feel the wine as well. Judging from the stare in the glass she herself had done previously, which was something that could turn out both ways for Faylice. As she spoke, Fay straightened her back once more, giving her the little smile on the fact Allison was able to help her. The question after it made her lean back a little bit, taking a sip of her wine again. ’The new king has profit with both a medici and good contacts between as many countries.’ Fay started, the ice blue eyes glaring towards Allison again. ’I can provide information, and stand in between.’

Allison could relate to fleeing a life where you didn’t feel like you fit in. At age fourteen, she had left her home behind. The people who she was supposed to be calling family. She had held the hand of the man who had swept her off her feet and allowed him to turn her life around. Sometimes she wondered where she would have been today if it weren’t for him. Would she have been happy? Or would she have ended it all, unloved and broken in a house where she didn’t belong? No matter what, she never felt regret for leaving. While a part of her wanted to one day see what had happened to her family, she also knew it didn’t really matter. She was never a part of their life and they were absolutely not going to be a part of hers. Not now that she had made it all by herself. All the way to the top.
Faylice told her what she had to offer and Allison nodded slowly. “I do want the best relationship with my fellow country rulers, ” she agreed calmly. Another sip was taken and she wondered how the glass could be empty already. That was… strange. “Very well. You’re safe with us, ” she decided after a silence that seemed to last longer than it really did. She filled her glass and offered to fill Faylice’s again as well, showing her a smile. “Let us enjoy this day and speak of the details tomorrow. ” Because she needed to be sober for that shit.
Faylice told her what she had to offer and Allison nodded slowly. “

Now the political stuff was getting talked over, Fay could feel herself relax a little bit more. Leaning back into the chair, she could feel the backrest pressuring against her back. Maybe this time would be different from all the others she decided to run. This cause had been a little bit different, that was a well known fact for the dark haired lady. She simply couldn’t stay, even though she knew she wouldn’t get kicked out of D’auvignon. So she kicked herself out, with some promises to the king of Navarre. It was a perfect little story, but in the end she really just ran away. Faylice knew that as well herself, but if the others could see it in any other way, it would be a win. Nobody liked a scared girl, nobody respected them. Everyone who was nice would only want to claim their advantage off that scared girl. Luckily, she wasn’t that scared girl, at least not now, now she was just a royal without a country. Giving her far more chances for her own success.
As Allison nodded, she smiled a little bit broader. This whole conversation had gone so much worse than it was going right now, something that relieved the lady quite a bit. The words made her nod along. ’I think I can help you, and the current king of Navarre with that.’ Fay reassured while taking another few sips of her wine, she was already getting slightly lightheaded, still she didn’t stop drinking. Like she expected the more she would drink, the easier everything would get. ’Very well.’ The dark haired lady responded with a humble but true smile. Sighing lightly after as she realized this was the first safe place she had in weeks. How safe that would be, she’d discover later, but it was better than the hostile environment she was living in the last weeks in her home castle. ’That sounds like a very good plan.’ She emptied her glass and offered it to Allison, now she was already drinking, another wine wouldn’t be so bad. ’So, how does it feel to be the Grand Duchess now?’

It was in her best interest to be as friendly with the other rulers as she possibly could. There was no reason for the other rulers to place a knife in her back if she was the exact person they wanted on the fancy chair, after all. And luckily, she had always been one for alliances. It was in the name, after all. And now, she had a chance to make one with someone she had never met. And someone she wouldn’t meet anytime soon, either. All because of this dark-haired lady. A former royal, someone who was now stranded without a home. In a way reminding her of herself, which was probably why she allowed this woman her request so easily. The woman was of no danger to her, or at least, that was what her gut told her. And up until now, it had very rarely been wrong. “Then I look forward to our alliance. ”
How does it feel to be Grand Duchess. Allison filled the two glasses with wine again, even though a voice in her head told her not to, as she thought of an answer. “Everyone expects me to say it is amazing, ” she admitted to the dark-haired woman. “But it’s a lot of work. And I had never even entered a castle until we took over. ” Except for the Archeon, perhaps, but that had been a different situation all together. “How does it feel to no longer be a princess? ” she decided to ask, raising a brow as she took a sip of her wine. While perhaps some might still see the woman as one, the King was gone. And so, she wasn’t the royalty she had once been. Even less so if she was staying in Rhoynar, where no one really cared for royalty to begin with.
How does it feel to be Grand Duchess. Allison filled the two glasses with wine again, even though a voice in her head told her not to, as she thought of an answer. “

Positioning herself right in between the countries was maybe one of the best moves she had done so far. All so perfect and all so fitting for her, keeping herself on a spot safe and high enough for anyone that hated her, any of the people who wanted to hurt her. And away from any pressure from her father, not that she really expected to have him coming at her even now. Especially not since he himself left, and released that pressure himself. Making her able to decide for her own choices, and think about herself for once now. She picked up her wineglass, staring into the clear liquid of wine probably a little too long, as if there was something written in it, before she looked back up again. ’I can say the same.’ Fay responded, a genuine smile falling over her lips. It would be a pretty good deal for the both of them, ensuring enough for her. At least this night, with that many wine in her system.
Her question was so loosely asked, something that was definitely an outcome from the quick drinking. Still it fulfilled it’s assignment, picking up the just newly filled glass as the lady waited on her answer. Nodding on the answer she let Allison speak through. ’It isn’t.’ Faylice simply said, like it was the most normal thing to say. There was hardly anything amazing about being a high ruler, but maybe she was just a little one-sided for that one. Given her time as a royal wasn’t the smoothest. ’How well were you prepared, for this?’ The statement that Allison hadn’t even been in a castle raised a frown on Fay her face, almost out of worry. Taking another sip she sighed on the to be expected question. ’It’s very double, to be honest.’ She spoke the truth, thinking it was so double in almost every way. ’There was a very great deal of pressure, which is gone.’ That wasn’t only the pressure royalty came with, but also from the previous king. ’But I hadn’t expect the country to be so divided over the new king.’ With it, Fay took another sip, surprising herself on how easy the speaking manners went now, before she looked back at the brunette again.

The first fourteen years of her life, the brunette had lived in a mansion. Her father had always been busy with work and she was unwanted by her stepmother, so she spent those days mostly in her own room, reading. Something she still tended to do, especially when life got tougher, sticking with the one thing that had always managed to calm her down. But, when fourteen she ran from home, spending a while on the streets before eventually getting her own, small cottage somewhere in the eastern part of Falkreath. Unlike the mansion, that place had truly felt like home. It was hers and hers alone. The castle felt… different. While she couldn’t say it was better, it had a certain charm to it. As long as she managed to keep the bedroom completely private, she was sure she’d survive. Even if it meant that the bedroom was the only place that truly felt like home in a castle that was supposed to be hers.
When Faylice asked how well she had been prepared, Allison couldn’t help but laugh. “Not at all, ” she admitted, clearly drunk as she would never admit to a lack of preparations. She took great pride in her own plans, after all. And with the whole take over, she had not done well enough. She had overestimated herself, facing the exhaustion of being a ruler now. “I spent the first days running around like a headless chicken. ” Another thing she wouldn’t likely admit under normal circumstances, even if it seemed to amuse her at this moment.
“They will always be, ” Allison calmly spoke when Faylice told her she hadn’t expected the country to be so divided. “After all, the common people only hear a part of the story, leaving the rest up to themselves to fill in, ” she went on. “It is almost funny to see how they think they understand it all, yet only know what they want them to know. ” It was miserable to think how people lived like that, living the lies others had carved for them. She had seen it happen countless time and most people just didn’t want to bother finding the truth.
When Faylice asked how well she had been prepared, Allison couldn’t help but laugh. “

Faylice really wasn’t a big drinker. In her past, she rarely grabbed for wine or other alcoholic beverages. Even though there always was plenty in the castle in D’auvignon, right for her to take, she just didn’t have the urge to really drink. And so she didn’t. Only when there were visitors there she had to attend to, have dinner with or so. On those occasions she always got reminded by the fact she couldn’t take very much wine before it would have its effect. Now, wasn’t any different. Even when there wasn’t a real urge to drink the wine, there wasn’t any to stop it either. Not even when she started to feel it, sense it in the way her talking went so much smoother, easier almost. No, it just made her sip more out of her glass, one night wouldn’t be that bad, right?
It seemed like the woman in front of her had the same thought, or at least it ran along the same lines. The laugh of Allison made the dark haired lady pull up a brow. Ready to comment something on the stupidity of her question, and if that really was that stupid, but the answer made that brow drop again. ’That must’ve been, must be heavy.’ Correcting herself Fay let her ice blue eyes gaze at the brunette. She had been struggling with her position since her childhood, but she couldn’t imagine how it must feel when you’re just thrown into it. With the next words, the lady grinned, taking another sip of her wine. ’As long as no one really notices, it’s fine right?’ She answered, a little smile still curled around her lips before she chuckled, probably an effect from the wine as well. The confession of Fay got answered, by such a logical answer It made her sniff for a moment. ’Wise words.’ The lady admitted, after a small silence when Allison finished. ’The people find their own truth, how far from reality that really is.’ The ice blue eyes gazed into the room, getting stuck on a painting that hung against the wall. ’How are the people treating you here?’ Without much thought of if it was a good idea to ask that question, Fay did it anyways, the ice blue eyes sliding back towards the lady in front of her again.

Faylice noted how it must have been quite hard, and still was, to suddenly be thrown into the life she was leading now. Allison nodded when she mentioned that it was fine as long as no one noticed. “I have chosen for this life myself, ” she admitted. No one had forced it onto her, unlike Kaz, who had been dragged into this by her. She felt bad about it, but she also knew that she had tried to keep this from him. If only he had allowed her to do all of this alone. But then again… that would probably not have ended well. No matter how hard she tried to let herself believe that she was a strong independent woman who didn’t need a man… she did. Her father when she was a child, her first love when she wasn’t anymore… Giovanni when the boy could no longer give her what she wanted. And after that, it had been Kaz. “And my husband is there to help. ” Even though she didn’t allow him to help much, it was still nice to have him here.
When the woman agreed, the brunette couldn’t help but smile. “It is quite remarkable to see how they follow those who form an opinion, though, ” she spoke, taking another sip of her wine before falling quiet for a few seconds. “They follow those who scream the loudest, whose opinions are usually the furthest from true. ” Allison had always thought it was interesting how stupid the sheep of this civilisation were. Perhaps, one day, they would learn to think for themselves. But for now, at least it kept them out of harm's way.
“Surprisingly well, ” she answered to the woman’s next question. “While there have been plenty who turned their back after the death of their previous ruler, those places filled quickly and the castle is actually functioning, ” she explained, frowning as if she realised something, “as far as a place in Rhoynar can function, of course. ” Rhoynar wasn’t the… easiest of countries, after all. “Have you been here before? ”
When the woman agreed, the brunette couldn’t help but smile. “
