With a small sigh, she dug her feet a little deeper into the warm sand. The sun threw its last few rays over the isle of Sunfall, a stunning view if you hadn’t gotten used to it yet. The golden bracelets around her wrists rattled a little when she pulled her knees closer to her chest. She just couldn’t get used to this island. She felt like an outcast in every way possible, like she didn’t belong here. The way they made her dress didn’t feel right. Endowed with golden jewellery and dresses that had cost more than her own life did, back when she was a slave. Still, she kept desperately clinging to the Priests of Sol, because wasn’t that the very definition of faith? Blindly throwing yourself into the deep, trusting you’d be right at the very end? A frown took hold of her face as the sun slowly but surely sagged below the horizon. It was time for her to go back.
Without any hurry, she got up to wipe the sand off of her pearly white dress. Another ironic contrast with her previous life. It was almost like the Priests of Sol were trying to mock her in some way. She constantly asked herself why she ever thought she’d fit in here, but an answer never really came. In a slow tempo, she found her way towards the city centre, where the unmistakable cathedral was located. Even though the Priests of Sol sought comfort in their church after sundown, the streets of Sunfall were still busy. The faith hadn’t been what it used to and the largest part of the population consisted of tourists, vintners, and traders. In the central square, she stood still for a few seconds to gaze into one of the various taverns. She couldn’t help but feel a light urge to go inside, to break some rules and let her old self be. After all, it was difficult to drop bad habits.

Oh Sunfall. How sad that it had to be an island, so sad it had to be in the middle of the sea, otherwhise he might have visited it more often. Kaz had to admit the city was gorgeous and he was amazed by how the sun played with the shadows on the wall, almost turning it into a play of its own. Yet he had no time to look at things like that. There was no time to be wasted. Behind all this beauty was a fear Kaz could not control and he rather had his feet on actual land than on an island that was divided by hundreds of canals full of seawater. Though, he had business to attend to. After that he knew he wouldn't sleep tonight, so it might just be better to leave. That was a thing he was good at. Appear and disappear without anyone noticing. Unless he wanted them to notice. Just like now.
He had followed her for a short while now. He hadn't expected to notice her so soon, but her dress was a stark contrast to the rest of the colorful city. Besides, she wasn't actually why he was here, but now that he had her in his sights, he couldn't help to grasp the oppertunity. What kind of person would he be if he wasn't so caring for the people who asked for his help? It was just a routine meeting. Nothing more, nothing less.
She stopped and so did he. He tilted his head a little, guessing at what she was looking at before he noticed the tavern. A grin appeared on his face while he limped closer to her. ''I expected you to stick to the rules a little longer,'' He made his presence known, standing a few metres away from her, his cane in front of him, his both hands resting on the crows skull. ''but if you really want to, I can buy us a round.'' It was no lie, Kaz didn't mind getting a drink if it meant calming his nerves down. Meanwhile chatting with Loraelei wouldn't be that bad as well.

Becoming a priestess of Sol had earned her a lot of time to contemplate, which wasn’t necessarily a good thing. The more time she got to think, the more she started to ruminate. About everything. She questioned her past, her own integrity and her faith. Some days she felt like she had a fighting chance at becoming someone good, someone holy. Other days she felt like she was the ugliest thing in the world. Insecurity wasn’t something she wore well. It tainted every inch of her being, making her face crumble into an expression that let the entire world now how unsure she was of everything. Luckily, she was aware of this fact, and tried to hide it. And she hid it well.
Caught up in her own thoughts, she was completely unaware of being followed. Her mind was hours ahead of her, already looking forward to the night. It was the only time she could be herself, undoing herself of this exuberant costume, ending the charade of portraying someone she really wasn’t. Someone she wanted to be. Her attention was drawn to a nearby tavern, due to the cheery noises and the scent of wine that seemed to stem from it. Something she seemed to recognize from her past life. Something she seemed to have missed. She stopped dead in her tracks, eyeing the establishment for a few seconds. Lore looked up a little startled when she heard a voice, but her expression settled as soon as she identified the source. The remark of the raven-haired man seemed to bring a slight smile on her face, cocking a brow up at him when he invited her for a drink. “I haven’t broken any rules just yet,” she assured him, trying to play coy. She then realized it never suited her. “But you don’t tend to have a good influence on people, do you?” Subtly, she let her gaze run over the people around them, checking for any other priests. When she couldn’t find any, she looked back at him. “I suppose I could make time for one drink.” Or maybe two.

He wasn´t sure how long it had been since the two had seen each other, but he could remember the night with her husband vividly. Kaz didn't want to see himself with as a murderer, but he defenitely had blood on his hands. All she had asked for was to be free again. And Kaz had delivered. Sure, the man had struggled, but if he just had listened to him, things could have gond very differently probably. Not really, the result would still be the same, but Kaz liked to think that the man would just have nodded, pack his bags and disappear. It woud've costed him a lot less time.
But here, now, eye to eye, Kaz was glad Loraelei was doing okay. At least it meant his work wasn't in vain. See, he could make the world a better place. Now he only needed to better himself. And what better to do that with a drink and a chat with an old aqquintance. Kaz grinned, putting a hand on his heart as if he was offended. ''What do you mean? I made sure you got free, had a roof over your head, food and drink, and this is how you treat me?'' His voice was dripping with sarcasm, the grin playfully draped on his face, while he made the gesture she could go ahead into the tavern. ''First round on me.'' He simply said, knowing that it would probably end up in a few more rounds. But who cared, he got to drink.

Loraelei had been afraid of the man, at first. Of course, she had been the one who asked for the death of her husband herself, but wanting the man dead and actually killing him were two entirely different things. Sometimes, she tried to imagine what it had been like. She wondered if Lyndon had suffered, or if his death had been quick and painless. When she thought of all the things he’d done to her, she hoped for the former. It was terrifying to think the man in front of her was capable of doing such a thing, but he’d been the one to give her her freedom. And for that, she was eternally grateful.
Her life as a priestess hadn’t been easy either – it’d taken her a lot more effort to adapt than she would’ve initially thought – but it was nothing compared to her past life. Nothing compared to being a slave, working as a courtesan and sharing a bed with strangers, nothing compared to being the wife of a violent alcoholic. She smiled, a genuine smile for once, when the man crossed his heart and pretended to be offended by her words. “You almost make me feel like I’m the one having to buy you a drink,” she replied, also grinning. And maybe she should. She owed him her life in some way. He told her the first round would be on him, to which she nodded. He gestured for her to go in, which she did. Walking through the doors, she was greeted by the smell of liquor and the loud voices of the people there. Somehow, it made her feel nostalgic. She glanced back at him, raising an eyebrow. “How’s Sunfall been treating you?” she asked, slightly wondering why he was here in the first place. She hoped he was doing as alright as she was, and if he wasn’t, she hoped she could help. Somehow, she couldn’t shake the feeling she owed him something.

Somewhere, deep down, he cared a little for her. The troubles she had gone through, everything she had to endure. In a way, they were the same, but then also completely different. Loraelei hadn't turned into some paranoid and murderous thief with a lust for gold. She seemed so delicate. One could almost think they could corrupt her, if they didn't know what she had gone through. But Kaz had done what he had to do. He wasn't proud of it, he wanted to be anything but a murderer, but the money she had offered him was too tempting to look away from. So he had done what she asked of him, coloring his hands a little more red with every drop of blood he had spilled. All for a currency he never seemed to have enough of.
''By all means, this one is on me. Let's celebrate on freedom.'' Kaz wasn't sure how much freedom there was in the faith she had rolled into, but he sure wanted to at least celebrate the result of their agreement. While limping towards a table for two that was still free, Kaz shrugged at her question. Besides the water that seemed to be everywhere and give him goosebumbs whereever he went? Besides the crowded streets full of shouting people who didn't seem to calm down? ''I must say Sunfall is one of the prettier cities Rhoynar has to offer. It sure is a pleasure to be here.'' He lied to his teeth, flashing a smile before gesturing to a maid to get them some drinks. The only good thing this city had brought him was Zanna. But even that would cost him a lot of work. Oh well, at least the weather wasn't so shitty. ''How is your new home?'' He retorted, stretching out his leg and putting his cane against the table so it wouldn't be in the way. ''I'm sure it all must be very exciting.''

There had only been a handful of men in her life that had helped her. Most of them usually did so after they got something they wanted from her, but she was willing to look past that. If only to preserve what little faith she had left in humanity. She wouldn’t try and fool herself into thinking Kaz was a kind man. Anyone who was willing to take a life in return for money couldn’t be considered anywhere near kind in her book. He was dangerous, unpredictable and above all: a criminal. Still, she couldn’t help but feel fond of him at least a little bit. The truth was that she didn’t know him in the slightest, but still she could tell he’d gone through a lot. A common pain they both shared, regardless of their differences.
A bittersweet smile took over her face as he suggested they’d celebrate freedom. “Sounds good,” she told him. Freedom was a relative thing. She was free compared to her former life. Not a slave, not a wife stuck in an abusive marriage. Still, she couldn’t do as she pleased, couldn’t just leave the island if she wanted to. In comparison, she was still nowhere near as free as he was. They occupied a table for two and she smiled again when he didn’t seem all that enthusiastic about visiting the island. For some reason, he felt the need to lie about it. “It’s far better than Brightwater Keep. Or Isla de Juegas, for that matter,” she said, shrugging a little. Those were both places she was held captive on, and she was glad to be rid of them. Her attention was drawn to his cane when he asked what her new home was like. She had always wondered how he’d hurt his leg, although she never really dared to ask. Men like him weren’t very vocal about their past. “Oh, there’s nothing more exciting than getting up early to pray and spread the word of our god,” she said, somewhat sarcastically. She was in a tavern, so she was pretty sure there would be no priests around to govern her words. “But I’m free and I’m safe, which is more than I could’ve asked for.” If anything, she was glad to be here.

Such a pretty woman. And such a pity for what she had to go through and where she was now. He would've taken her under his wing, but with Zanna and all his other problems, it was the best to stay out of most people their ways. Including his own. The thief fell silent, listening to the words of the priest. He could never do it, give his life to some faith of a God that no one knew for sure existed. Gods were only pure evil anyway. They brought nothing but dismay, corruption and despair. He had had his own share of it and he was done. Come to think of it, he wasn't even sure if his parents had believed in something until they.. had died. Kaz pushed the thought out of his head, not wanting to get into that kind of memory. Not here.
The thief sipped his drink. ''I'm glad to hear you are doing well.'' He replied, sounding as honest as he could be. Which, to his surprise, he was. Kaz might not be the nicest man, but unless you wre his enemy, he didn't wish anyone a bad life. It contradicted with his methods since he didn't care if he stole from the rich, the poor, slaves or kings, but he didn't mean for anyone to suffer. It was just that he wanted to suffer the least as possible, making him uncaring for how others lived. ''Though I must ask, why Sunfall, why the Sol?'' He didn't understand her reasoning. Wasn't this the same of being captive on a slaversship? Didn't she gave her life away to this being? Kaz scratched his chin, his brow raised. ''How is this different from being held captive?'' He dared to ask.

At first, the Priests of Sol had simply been a refuge for her. A way of obtaining food, water, and shelter for free. The only thing she had to do, was to participate in pretending there was someone like Sol watching over everyone and everything. See, Lore had nothing to offer the world but her services as a courtesan. Something she never wanted to subject herself to again. But somewhere along the way, accidentally, she’d found something that looked like faith. A belief that there was something good ingrained in the world, in everyone, something divine. A belief she clung to so heavily, hoping that she too could find salvation before it was too late. A desperate belief that she could be good, that she could rid herself of the desperation, filth, and shame of her former life.
Lore turned the corners of her lips up in a smile when he noted that he was glad she was doing well. Deep down she refused to believe he was being genuine, but she still appreciated the sentiment. The idea that at least someone out there was pretending to look out for her. She quietly sipped at her drink, looking up at him again once he asked her why she chose to go here, how it was different from being captive. A bittersweet smile appeared on her face for a few seconds. “Where else would I go?” she replied. The truth of the matter was that she wasn’t able to fend for herself. Not like he was. “The Sol Invictus is good to me. I’d rather serve her than any man.” She looked down at her drink again, tracing her nail over the condensation of the glass. “It’d be naïve for me to believe I’ll ever be truly free.” Freedom was a luxury that was purely reserved for highborn men, and no one else.

Kaz frowned, listening to her words. Where else she should go? How about going out on her own, discovering the world? Kaz didn't know Loraelei very well but he had expected at least a little adventurous spirit in her. Yet, he seemed to be disappointed. He nodded slowly, processing the words. A strange thought, but not entirely mad. ''Thought you might wanted to see the world after all that shit.'' He spoke without caring for the words he chose. ''But I don't mind your choice, after all, no one should decide for another what he or she has to do or has to become.'' Sure Kaz, like you never did that. How many people hadn't he swindled and bribed? How many people hadn't he robbed of their posessions who now had nothing left? All these people had maybe only seen his face once, or even never, and they had to become something entirely different to save their asses. The thief raised a brow. ''Are you saying you can't or you don't want to be free?'' He sipped from his drink again. All this talking was making him thirsty.

Of course, she noticed him frown. She’d learnt many things in the Blooming Rose, and one of them was to always pay attention to men’s expressions. Some of them were quite expressive, others were not. At best, it might help you anticipate a punch before it actually landed. Something that had saved her hide quite a couple of times when she was married. She looked up a little when he said he’d thought she might want to see more of the world. She’d like to, but her fear held her back. A bittersweet smile appeared on her face as he continued. “It’s not that easy,” she simply replied, because it wasn’t. Seeing the world not only took courage, but resources too, and Lore lacked both. Kaz asked her whether she couldn’t or didn’t want to be free, which made her frown a little. “I’m saying that I value my safety more than my freedom,” she said, a little louder than before. “I’m not like you. I can’t go wherever I please without worrying whether I’m going to survive the next day.” She had nothing to offer the world, no way to make money or provide herself with food and shelter. Not like he did.

Maybe he just didn't want to understand her, but Kaz truly was struggeling with the fact that Loraelei was saying that it wasn't as easy as he said it was to discover the world. ''Do explain.'' He spoke when he put down his glass again. And she did and Kaz listened. He could get where she was coming from, but did she think he was invincible? ''Do you think I am immortal? No day goes by I do not value my safety.'' Alright, maybe he was lying a little. If he had found a good place to raid, so to speak, or found the perfect victim to swindle, money got above his safety. But that was to be expected. When you were a thief, risks and sacrafices had to be made. ''It just takes time to adjust to that kind of life. You just have to find your own path.'' Look at him being all inspirational. And that after not even finishing his first drink.

Lore found herself slightly gritting her teeth at his comments. Did he really think it was that easy? She had finally found a place where she was safe. As safe as anyone could be in this world. Why did he expect her to give that up? Sure, exploring the world was exciting, but it was a luxury that she couldn’t afford. Not right now. Kaz reasoned that he did value his own safety, which she found a little hard to believe. Lore sighed. “I’m just saying I can’t defend myself like you can. Not yet.” Kaz had at least some network of people working for him. She had no one. She raised an eyebrow and sipped at her drink when he told her to find her own path. “I’m trying to,” she let him know, trailing off her gaze to some random point in the room. “It just feels wrong. Walking around in this gown, in all this jewellery like I’m god’s gift to earth.” She put down her drink again, looking at him. “Everyone knows I don’t belong here.”

Everyone started at the bottom. So had Kaz. And some days he still had the feeling he was at that bottom, that he hadn`t come any further the day he washed up on Seere and had to fight for his own. Somewhere inside there was still that scared little boy who just tried to get something out of life and hope people would recognize him. Only he tried to get things out of the wrong side of life and it had ended him up here. He probably had more scars than tattoos and probably had more enemies than friends. But it kept him alive. It kept him going. Perhaps the same should happen to Loraelei, perhaps she would see then.
The thief nodded along, eyeing his drink for a moment and pondering if it would be wise to order a new one. When she talked about not belonging here, he looked up at her again. His eyes narrowed for a second. ''Nobody belongs anywhere.'' He started, leaning back in his chair while shuffeling with his glass. ''We just dig in the ground until the hole is deep enough so we can't get out anymore. Then we belong.'' With those words he finished his drink, deciding that it was best not to drink for the rest of the day, or the week even.
