Surrounded, but always alone

It was like the Gods had pulled some kind of joke on her. What had she done to deserve falling for someone who was an even bigger mess than she herself was? Not only did he manage to get himself into life threatening situations, even as a fucking immortal being, he was also generally difficult. When things got rough, he decided to push her away again. Like she wasn’t one of the few people on this world who actually wanted to help. No matter what, she would try to keep him here. Even if it meant she’d need a fucking break from life after dealing with it.

He wasn’t giving her his hand. She couldn’t help but sigh as she placed the towel on her lap, the wet side away from her clothes. “Kaz,” she said, frowning. Finally, she dared to look at him again. “Please, let me help,” she tried, almost begging him. Why did he always have to be so difficult? They had held hands a thousand times before and she wasn’t going to hurt him this time either. It was so terribly difficult to understand.

The pull on my flesh was just too strong
Stifled the choice and the air in my lungs
Better not to breathe than to breathe a lie

There was a thought creeping up in his head and it was a very bad one at that. And it was sick and fucked up and he shouldn’t even think it was a possibility. Yet, it somehow had made its way into his brain. Ignore it and it would go away. Just as these wounds would. The vampire sighed silently, looking down at his lap, his hands staining the sheets with the almost dried up blood. He would overcome this, at his own time and at his own pace.

But Allison kept insisting to help, she kept telling him to share things while right now he just wanted to be left alone. He was grateful for what she had done for him, for what she would do for him and for everything else. But right now she was overbearing and it was starting to get on his nerves. The vampire shook his head, sighing again. ‘’You don’t need to.’’ Maybe he just needed to find a bottle of alcohol and see if it would help with his thinking. Or maybe he should just throw himself off the nearest cliff. ‘’It needs time.’’

Never. Never would she understand why he was like this. With ink and blood stuck on his hand, he would still rather be a mess than let her help him. And, the painful part was, she couldn’t force him. It would not, in any way, endanger his life to leave his wounds untreated. So, if he was truly going to be this stubborn… she had to live with it. Like she would probably have to do a whole lot of times after this. Biting her lip, she softly nodded. “Okay then,” she simply told him, before getting up from the bed and placing the towels on the ground. She’d clean that up later.

Without a word, she bent over to the side of the bed, picking a book and the bottle of wine. She crawled back to the headrest of the bed and placed the bottle next to her leg, before opening the book. “Tell me if you need anything, then,” she told him, without looking at him as she simply turned the page. For now, she needed to focus her mind on something else. There was no way she could keep doing this if she didn’t take a ten minute break every now and then and she was definitely not going to be able to fall asleep right now, nor was she planning on leaving him alone. Reading a damn journal was her best bet.

The pull on my flesh was just too strong

Kaz was a strange human being, if you could still call him that after this transformation. One moment he could be the coldhearted thief who threw his morals at the side just to get what he wanted. Whenever he had his mind on something he would do anything to get it. He wouldn’t care for someone’s problems or issues, after all, they weren’t his and he shouldn’t carry those issues with him. It would make him awful at his job even. If you were a thief with a conscience worrying about others, you would be caught in no time. But, if you could just shut those emotions off and focus on the job. You could be a master. And Kaz had been like that for a long time. He would get in, get the job done and worry about other things later. The money was what he lived for, the gold in his pockets and the heavy feeling of the coin in his hands. It made him live for another day.

And on the other side was a whole different person. A Kaz who cared and was worried about everyone around him, who was scared to act because he might fuck things up and it would get worse from there. He was scared to lose the ones close to him and there would be no minute in his day left where he didn’t think of the consequences of his actions. It was this Kaz that Allison had fallen in love with and the one that loved her back. It was this Kaz that was worried sick that he was just a burden to her and that he was better off alone. And it was this Kaz that instead of pushing her away, wanted to draw her closer and tell her how sorry he was.

But after the recent events, those two sides collided and had merged with each other. And it was now a horrible mess. The coldhearted thief versus the worried lonely boy. Neither could win from each other. It was just a fight on who would be on top and who was in charge of controlling him. The woman had truly done her best work. The broken mess he looked like might worry people the most, but for him it was the confusion. Because who was he really? And who did he want to be?

After all of this, could he go back to his old ways? Could he go back on the streets and live from day to day, filling his pockets with the money he swindled and stole? Or would his soft side overpower him and tell him how wrong all of it was? Since when had his morals won from his greed? His two natures were too loud to ignore and too conflicting to put them together. Another question was if he wanted to sink that low again and go back to the days he had lived as a streetrat. Becoming Grand Duke had brought its perks and it may have been a welcoming change, yet it all felt too good. Kaz didn’t deserve to be treated like this, like he was ought to be looked up to, to be respected. He had never respected anyone, so why would anyone respect him?

Was there a way to turn all of this back and undo the things he had done? Could he go back in time and prevent himself from the horrors he had created? Couldn’t he just die? Then all these horrible situations would be over, then nobody had to worry about his stubborn ass and finally be free from him. He brought nothing but harm to the ones around him. He couldn’t stay out of trouble, no matter how much he tried. Bad luck always found him and if it wasn’t bad luck, it would be his karma catching up on him.

Could he truly think like this? Could he truly think he was a burden? After all, hadn’t he been a burden to everyone around him since the day he was born? His brother and I could never have lived a normal life because of his magic, his parents were dead because of him, he had lost his home because of himself and he had brought so much destruction to people who didn’t deserve it. His conscience had gotten the best of him and bested his immoral behaviour. Even if he wanted to, he could no longer go back to being a low thief. He simply had outgrown that nature.

But his nature clinged to him as if it was taking its last breath. The vampire hadn’t moved a single inch as he had been so lost in thought he didn’t even care about himself anymore. And that was an issue. Because Kaz thought lesser of himself than the people around him. He didn’t deserve them, he wasn’t above them and he definitely did not earn their respect. His nature might not want to live on the streets anymore, but he truly belonged there. In the gutter.

’’I need you to leave.’’ He finally spoke after which seemed to be minutes, if it were not longer. His voice was soft but stern. He didn’t want her to object. He wanted her to listen. He turned his head so he could look at her, his eyes betraying nothing. ‘’I need you to leave and take care of yourself.’’ That would probably be more clear. He wasn’t the only mess in this room, if not she was the bigger mess. He had seen her be strong for so long and he had seen her telling others that she was fine so often that he practically could hear the moment in her voice that told him she was lying.

He would be fine. It would take time, if not forever for him to reach that point but he eventually would get there. The last thing he wanted was to pull people with him in his misery. After all, they did not deserve that. They had done nothing to deserve that. Maybe that was why he pushed people away again and again. Not because he didn’t want people to see the cracks in his skin, but he thought that he wasn’t worthy enough for people to see them.

Again, he tried to reason with Allison. He was eerily calm, as if everything suddenly made sense and the puzzle pieces had finally fallen together. ’’I don’t want you to break because of me. I don’t want to lose you because of myself. So for once, please listen to me. Take care of yourself. Not me, yourself.’’ Was this the thief speaking? Trying to get the best out of the situation just for his own personal gain? Or was this his side that cared too much and just wanted the best for everyone.

’’I love you Allison, I really do..’’ His voice trailed off before he finally found the courage to speak again. It weren’t the wounds on his lips or in his throat that were holding him back, but himself. ‘’But I’m scared I can’t love you right now.’’

Surrounded, but always alone
So pick a place, pretend it's home
The higher you climb, the further you fall. But don't be ashamed of wanting it all. Cause the view from the top is beautiful but fleeting. Looks can be deceiving
He is mine and I am his. From this day, until the end of our days.’ It had only been weeks since they spoke the words. Those that were supposed to bind them until death did them part. They were supposed to live by them. And for moments in the weeks to come, she had actually believed them to be true. She had hoped that he would keep his promise, that he was actually going to stay with her. Even if they wouldn’t work forever, they would fight until the day they couldn’t anymore. Because she loved him. More than anything, she did. And how she wished that he did the same. Somewhere, deep inside, she knew that it would never be the same. That they were too different and that this was all doomed to fail because of it. Because it was. And they had known this from the moment they had gotten into it. Yet they tried. Yet they fought for something so stupid.

‘I need you to leave.’

Until today. A frown on her face made clear she heard the words as she froze in her spot. She didn’t look at the man, not yet. Because her rising heartbeat made clear how she knew that this was not going to be good. For once, it wasn’t going to be fine. Maybe they weren’t going to pull through all of this. Biting her lip, she hoped to fight the tears that were finding their way to her eyes, staying there for a moment as she hoped this wasn’t going to be as bad as she thought it was going to be. But it was, because he told her to leave and take care of herself. Her nails scratched over the page as bit her lip harder, almost tasting blood. This wasn’t good. This was not how everything was supposed to go. Not at all.

‘Take care of yourself. Not me, yourself.’

She knew what these words meant. Finally, she looked up as a single tear found its way from her eye down to her cheek. She opened her mouth to speak, but closed it as another tear left her eye. These words were not meant to be fought. This was not her decision. It was his. In disbelief, she started to shake her head. She was fine. She needed him to know that she was fine, that she would pull through this until he was fine again. He needed to be fine.

‘I love you Allison, I really do…’

Never would she have thought that those words would hurt so much as he spoke them. She closed the book on her lap, pulled up her knees in an effort to protect herself from what was inevitably coming. She gasped for air as it felt like he was holding her heart in his hand, squeezing it harder with every word he spoke. No longer could she hold back the other tears and more found their way down her cheeks, all while she stared at him. Here she was, trying to help him. And here she was, breaking apart right in front of him.

‘But I’m scared I can’t love you right now.’

And there it was. The truth that had been inside her head ever since he came back. The one truth she wasn’t ready to hear. Because that was the one thing she couldn’t handle. In his hands, her heart broke in a million pieces. The air around them suddenly seemed to hold less oxygen as she gasped for air once more, looking at the book. No longer could she read the words on the pages. It was all a blur, For weeks, she had held herself together by reminding herself that she had him. Like she had Giovanni before him. And now that was over. Because in the hardest of times, where he was supposed to rely on her, he had realized that she was not what he needed. She couldn’t be to him what he was to her. It tore her apart, left her gasping for the air that was suffocating her at the same time.

Quietly, she sat there, tears rolling down her cheeks as she thought of a response. Deep inside, there was still this part that wanted to fight him. But, it was because she loved him that she could not be selfish. So finally, after what must have been minutes, she looked up again. In her brown eyes he could find pain, but somewhere inside of them there was acceptance. This was his decision. And all along, she should have known he would make it. That he would leave again when things got rough. This time not for her, but for him.

Not a care in the world was given for the book that fell off her lap as she slowly worked her way up from the bed, placing her feet on the ground and hoping they would still be able to carry her. Luckily, they seemed to be able to. Barely, but it worked. With her back turned towards him, she thought about the words to speak for a second, before she finally turned around, holding the wedding ring between thumb and index finger.

I can’t love you right now.

Slowly, she pulled the ring from her finger, looking at it for a second. “I meant it when I made my promise,” she told him, her voice trembling as she spoke. The emotions, the hurt… There was no denying them in her body language, her voice nor her eyes. And as she opened her mouth again, she knew that the only words she’d speak were to fight him. So instead, she took a step in his direction again and placed the ring on his lap. “Until the day you can again,” she told him softly, showing him the faintest smile. One that didn’t even attempt to hide the hurt she felt.

And with that, she walked out the door.
