It was impossible for her to understand why he did what he did. With the question he asked, it felt like he was purposefully trying to sabotage all of this. Like he was trying to get her to give up on him. A feeling that he had given her more commonly. Back with Giovanni and when he had become a vampire, too. He didn’t rely on her. Not at first, not when he was turned and… not now either. She wondered if he ever would. If her being here was only for herself, or if it would actually help him.
The question was left unanswered for a while, but eventually she opened her mouth. “How can you even ask that? ” she asked him, her voice still nothing more than a whisper. She didn’t know what the vampiric bitch had done to him and, until he told her, she could only guess. But, from what she was seeing, this wasn’t just physical torture. Kaz was stronger than that. She must have done more and the thought of that, caused Allison’s stomach to turn.
The question was left unanswered for a while, but eventually she opened her mouth. “

Stifled the choice and the air in my lungs
Better not to breathe than to breathe a lie
Weak, that was what he was. Not only phisically, mentally was even worse. The woman had broken him within days, she had thrown his pride away, twisted it's neck and feasted on it. And she had made him watch. Where he always had believed he was strong and that nothing could ever get to him, the woman had proven him wrong. Within days. It was pathetic and sad. He had come so far, he had climbed his way up and when he finally was at the edge, someone had pushed him right back down.
There was a silence between them once more, the air had become static, or at least for him while he shifted his gaze away from Allison. Instead, he looked outside the window. It was dark out, he should be doing things now, not lay in this bed and hope better times would come again. It was like he had totally forgotten already what had happened the first time he had tried to get up. It didn't stop him from trying again. The vampire groaned as he put weight on his arms, trying to get up. It was slow and it was stupid. He would be able to set one step and then he would fall again. He had discarted Allisons'question, forgotten that she had even asked him something. He just wanted to get away from here, away from everything.

As he tried to get up, she crawled towards him and placed her hand on his arm. “There is no way I am letting you out of this room within the next few days, ” she told him calmly. He had gone from being locked up, to being locked up again. This time, however, it was for his safety. And for those around him. He had to heal and she was not going to let him out until things seemed to be going better. After all, she would never forgive herself if anything were to happen to him again.
“For now, you’re going to heal up, ” she said, trying to make her voice sound stern, but failing completely. “After you’ve healed, it is… up to you if you want to stay or not. ” And how it would hurt if his decision was to leave. It would break her into a million pieces, but she knew there was little she could do about it. He had been through a serious trauma and if that made him realise that this wasn’t his home, that she wasn’t his home… What could she possibly do about it?

There was that soft touch again, the one that compelled him to get back down again. It was so much different from the things he endured the past days. It didn't feel right, it felt like her touch wasn't even real. It couldn't be, could it? Kaz waited for it to turn cold or for it to start hurting him. But it didn't. It kept being the same, her warmth was in such a contrast to his cold skin, to the cold he was used to now and the cold he deserved.
With a vague, glazed look in his eyes he stared at her as he slowly let himself fall down on the bed again. Kaz didn't understand. There was so much wrong with this situation that he couldn't even grapple if this was real or not. Maybe he had passed out again and this was a fever dream. But the only words he heard how she basically locked him up again. Suddenly, there seemed to be some sort of resist in his eyes, as if the old Kaz fought back for his body, but that look quickly faded away when he remembered himself othe consequences when he would resist. She would hurt him, she would make sure he suffered. No. Allison wasn't this woman. But how could he be so sure of that?

Their eyes met and all she could do, was show him a sheepish smile. With dried up tears on her face, generally looking like she hadn’t slept in days (which wasn’t far from the truth), it was hard to make it seem like a genuine smile. Especially as watching him just hurt her. But, she wanted to show that she truly had no harm in mind. She was here to help, that was all. She just hoped she’d have the energy to actually do so. The past few days had been nothing but stress, fear and worry. Up until the first letter had arrived, she hadn’t known if something had happened to him, or if he had just taken off. It wouldn’t have been the first time, after all.
Kaz let himself fall on the bed again and she nodded carefully, letting go of his arm and slowly moving back to where she had sat before, distancing herself from him. She crossed her arms and rested them on her knees, placing her chin on her arms. “Try to rest, please, ” she asked of him. There were so many more things she wanted to say, but she couldn’t find the words to explain. Instead, she just looked at him, her expression filled with pain and fear. The ring on her finger seemed to burn and a part of her wanted to throw it into a corner, while another part wanted to hold onto it more than ever now. This was a mess.

The stench of his own blood filled his nostrills again. He didn't need to inspect his body to know where it was coming from. The stake had done the most damage, tearing open old scars and destructing his leg from the inside. Splinters were still there, making themselves known with every move he made. But he couldn't get it over his lips to tell her, he deserved to suffer. After all, the woman had only shown who he really was. Just an empty shell.
Allison moved away from him, giving him breathing space hdidn't need. The blood coming out of his leg started to spread over the linnen, creating a dark stain. She asked him to rest, she almost seemed to beg of him. How could she do that? She wasn't as low as him, she shouldn't be the one begging. He should. He should be on his knees right now and beg for his life. But not to live on, no. He would beg to die. ''I can't.'' He replied to her words with a mere whisper. The pain was too much to lay still and too overwhelming to do anything. It was like he was stuck in a limbo of pain, where everything he did was never good enough. Just like him.

He couldn’t. Carefully, Allison bit her lip as her gaze moved over his body. Mort had mentioned how silver had been used and Allison knew all too well what this meant. A vampire wouldn’t instantly heal when slashed by silver. The torturer had used this to her advantage. She hadn’t just been trying to hurt Kaz. She wanted to hurt Mort too, needing for the boy to suffer long after she had already released him. Kaz had been used as nothing but a simple message. As Giovanni’s advisor, she had… witnessed similar events. On humans, but the message had been the same. Allison had never participated in this, but she had been forced to watch. The memory only made all of this worse, as she had a faint idea of what had happened to him while he had been gone.
“I can take a look at your wounds, ” she offered after some silence. While she was no doctor, she had some knowledge when it came to the matter. Yet, she was well aware that for the most parts, it would be a matter of rest, patience and… feeding. But, who knew. Perhaps she could find something. The library held so much information. There had to be something. Or at least, she’d be better off reading than torturing herself over the thought of being useless.

He rather curled up and die right now, that's how far the woman had driven him back into his mind. The poison was strong and it would take years, maybe if not forever until he had finally gotten it out of his system. If he even allowed it to get out. Right now, the poison felt like the only thing that he truly could tell was real. It wasn't comforting by the slightest, but it was something he could hold on for. For better or worse.
The though of her getting close, to see what kind of mess he was, it frightened him. The vampire shook his head, immediately grabbing it afterwards as he felt the room spinning again. The monster inside him told him to feed, told him to do something about this situation. But his mind held him down and kept him paralysed. The battle inside him was one he couldn't win, maybe one he didn't even want to win. There were many things on his mind, but all of them unspeakable. All of them destined to hurt instead to heal. Kaz turned on his side, releasing a soft sigh paired with a whimper as he could feel every muscle in his body ache. As if his own body was telling him to give up.

He didn’t want her anywhere close, that was clear. Especially when he denied her offer. For a second, she looked up in an effort to fight the tears that were coming. She could do this. They could get through this. Perhaps Kaz had never wanted a relationship like the one they had. She wasn’t the person to keep him from hell. Especially since he seemed to be dragged into it no matter what. Instead, she would follow him into it and pull him through. And then, only once his feet were back on the ground, would she allow him to move away if that was what he desired.
“Whatever you need, ” she softly whispered. “Just… tell me. ” She couldn’t guess what he needed. What he wanted. He would have to communicate this to her, which wasn’t exactly his strongest point. She wanted to take a look at his wounds, but she knew that forcing him would not help the situation at all. He wasn’t going to die from them, so she couldn’t force him to let her look. They would heal on their own. It would just take a while.

It was now that his mental state had begun to detoriorate so badly that he didn't even care about what he was thinking anymore, or what kind of effect it had on him. He didn't even realise he was sobbing until moments later that it already had begun. The vampire bend his knees towards his chest, trying to bury his head into the matress. He wanted to suffocate, he wanted to disappear, he wanted to die.
She asked him what he wanted. A thousand thoughts immediately jumped to those words like hungry predators, tearing them apart before his eyes, telling him that he shouldn't accept her help, that he didn't deserve it. His shoulders jolted the more he cried. The salt of his tears mixed with the blisters on his lip, causing more damage than good. He couldn't even cry without suffering. ''Let me sleep... Let me go..'' Kill me. He managed to hold the last words in. If sleep was the closest thing he could get to that meant he no longer had to think or feel the pain, so be it. He didn't care if she put a needle in his neck or knocked him out with the heaviest book she found, or if she would just simply brush his hair until he calmed down himself. He wanted to be gone.

He started sobbing, tearing her heart apart once more. She kept telling herself that she would give him the space he needed, that it was up to him to show her what she could do. She knew of his troubles, of his previous trauma’s. And she kept telling herself that he would want the space that she tried to give him. This was not the time to be selfish. All that mattered, was that he was safe. That he would feel as good as he possibly could, even when the best possible was miserable at the moment.
But, the sobbing was too much and without thinking, she had moved towards him. She sat down next to him, slowly placing one hand on his upper arm, while she used the other to carefully brush through his hair. “I’m not letting you go, ” she whispered. There was no way. “Rest. I’ll hold watch, ” she whispered. Nothing was going to happen to him. He was safe.

Would she understand a situation that he himself couldn't even understand? Or was the problem here that he didn't want to understand, that his mind blocked him off the thoughts that would make him realise all of this wasn't real, that he wasn't broken. But he was and everything he did was clear evidence that he was. There was no pride, no fire, no will to continue on fighting. He was but a shell of what he once was. Broken in mere days. Pathetic.
He wanted to get this over with, he wished for the darkness that he knew he couldn't get. He was a vampire and vampires didn't earn that luxury. As a vampire he didn't earn anything. Her shadow casted over him, giving him the feeling that he was once again inferior to whoever he was in company with. If he could curl up further, he would do that. Her sudden fingers running through his hair scared him, making the vampire flinch before his brain registered that this wasn't an attack. At least, not yet. Kaz opened his eyes, staring forward to the wall again. The sobbing seemed to town a little bit, but the tears kept flowing. ''You should.'' He whispered almost silently, noting to himself that these were not the words he wanted to say. But the poison did its work.

The time with Giovanni, his hurt had been physical. She had been the one having a mental breakdown at that point and he had been there to catch her, even though he was the one in physical pain. She remembered him leaving after, but pushed away the thought. The time in Valyria, he had been mentally fine too. It had hurt to see him in bad shape, but this… This was so much worse. This reminded her of how he had been after his transition. And even that had been different. He had been a mess, but not a broken one.
While he flinched, he didn’t pull away. The sobbing seemed to tone down, so she decided to keep brushing her fingers through his hair. His whisper caused her to freeze for a second, but she managed to get herself together quick enough, playing with his hair again. “No, ” she answered, her voice firm for the first time today, “I shouldn’t. ” Why would she? Because his luck was the worst in the whole world? She knew what she was getting herself into when she married him. It wasn’t going to be easy. It was going to be a trip to hell and back, but she would be there by his side for all of it. “And I won’t. ”

Many things he had endured, many more were to come, but this, this was the cherry on top of the cake. Or so, he thought. Where he would heal physically and would appear as nothing was wrong, his mental state was an entire different conversation. There hadbeen things in the past that tried to crack his will and his pride, and there had been things that had almost succeeded. He had scars, he wore them with pride to see that he couldn't be broken. But now, now it seemed that those scars had been nothing but wounds pretending to be scars. And they would love to bleed.
Information flooded his senses, pain becoming worse and then dying out again with every sob. He wasn't just a mess, he wouldn't be fine in a couple of weeks. This would take years. And would Allison allow that? Would she care enough and would she stand it for so long? Maybe he stayed like this until she died, maybe then he would realise what he had done and maybe then he might snap out of it. But that was not today, nor tomorrow. ''You should.'' He repeated again between the sobs, wiping the tears away with the hand that hadn't been damaged. The ink was still on his other hand, cracked, a perfect example of what had happened to him. ''It's not worth it.'' The words came out slowly, the poison dripping from his lips. The vampire shook his head, damning himself for doing it as he felt how things started to spin just as things had calmed down. ''I'm not worth it.''

There were so many hurdles they had yet to overcome. Even if this hadn’t happened, their relationship had never been perfect. She was human and he was not. And that was only their most recent struggle. She still had no idea how to overcome that and perhaps they were doomed to fail. So maybe her efforts were all wasted and it truly wasn’t worth it. But, she knew that he was. Because she was well aware of all the struggles they had overcome and the ones they had yet to face. It hadn’t stopped her from marrying him. And now he was completely broken, all she wanted to do was be there for him. Not being able to, would break her so much more. His pain was hers now too.
“You’re worth it, ” she told him, disagreeing with his words. “You’re worth every bit of it, ” she whispered, looking at the back of his head as she brushed her fingers through his hair. She remembered the time she had told him this as well, after Giovanni had died. It was when she had realized just how much this man meant to her.
