The pull on my flesh was just too strong
Stifled the choice and the air in my lungs
Better not to breathe than to breathe a lie

Her words meant nothing, they couldn't get through the thick river of poison in his blood that clotted his brain. They didn't get far and Kaz shut them out, almost wanting to spit them out. She was feeding him lies so he could feel good for a moment, just so he would be a little less broken and he would be of use for her again. He saw through her plans, he wasn't that stupid. Just feed the broken boy pretty little lies and all would be well for her again.

He had been a fool for believing that she actually cared now. He didn't want to look her in the eyes, seeing how she pretended. No, instead he wanted to get as far away from her as possible. But when his mind finally came to that conclusion, his body had already gotten used to her touch and it had trusted it for this moment. Kaz could feel the fatigue slowly getting a hold of him. He had begged for it and now that it was finally here, he wanted to get rid of it. His eyelids felt heavy, the sobs slowly turned to silent crying and he still tried to fight it. He pressed his nails into the palms of his hands, hoping that the pain would keep him awake, he could feel how they opened the old wounds again. But it wasn't enough. His body was used to that sort of pain now, it was nothing new. ''No.'' He whispered, his voice slugging as felt the tug of the darkness. He tried one last time, turning himself on his other side, towards her. ''Youre, lying.'' The vampire wanted to push her away, his hand reaching out for her. But his sight was hazy, blurring as he lost his battle. His hand ended up on her knee, a failed attempt. His body and muscles relaxed and his head fell more to the side as Kaz faded into unconsciousness once again.

She was lying. That was what was going through his mind. He honestly thought she was lying. After everything they had been through, after everything she had already said. Suddenly, their honeymoon felt like it had been ages ago. Like it was a past long forgotten. Because, while it had only been days since they had returned, so much had happened. So much had changed. And perhaps he would never be the same guy he had been there. Everything between them had changed when everything inside of him had. Happiness was not meant for them, but she would damn try to give him as much of it as possible. The more he suffered, the more she felt like she was a failure. She would try anything in her power to make him happy again. Step into hell to save him, to pull him out of it. Because he deserved bliss, even if it wouldn’t find it in her lifetime.

As he had turned around, she had placed her hands on her lap, carefully watching him as he had placed his hand on her knee. After he lost consciousness, she took his hand and, as careful as possible, placed it back on the bed, so she would be able to move. Carefully, she moved back a bit, creating some space between them again. Everything was different now. But they would find a way to make it work. For now, however, his recovery was her one and only priority. So she stepped off the bed and took her journal off the nightstand. It hurt her heart when she ripped a page from the book, but she needed to write this down and she was not, under any circumstance, going to give someone her entire journal. She started writing down the titles of some books, including the writer whenever she remembered who had written it. The books she wrote down seemed to be completely unrelated. One was about killing a vampire, while another was about the treatment of wounds with natural herbs. About five titles, of which she remembered three writers, were written down on the piece of paper. She ended the list by adding her signature at the bottom of the page.

As quietly as possible, she had walked out the door, looking around. She stood by the door for a bit, carefully listening if there was no sound coming from her bedroom. Luckily, Kaz seemed quiet for now. A maid came walking and Allison greeted her with a smile, before handing the girl the note. “Please give this to Gareth and tell him to deliver these to me as soon as he can.” The girl nodded and made her way through the hallway, after which Allison made her way back inside the room, taking her journal and finding the page where the recipe of her old painkiller was found. The vampire venom wasn’t going to be of any use anymore now, but perhaps she could find something else? Unconsciously, she started tapping the pencil on the book.

The pull on my flesh was just too strong

Better not to breathe than to breathe a lie

In this darkness there was no pain, no emotion and above all, no lies. He was all with himself drifting on a dark sea. He could go under if he wanted, but then there was a chance he would no longer come up. Kaz let the waves crash over him, making him soaking wet. It was just him and his thoughts. Whenever he fell asleep as a kid and was met with this scenario, him alone on the sea, it almost always ended up as a nightmare. But there was no panic now, there were no demons coming to get him and the waves didn't seem to want him to drag under. He was safe here.

While Kaz rested, he only moved occasionally. But even those movements were limited, ranging from shifting his head or arms, but never his entire body. It was as if even in his sleep he was afraid that he would experience the pain. And while he seemed to be completely gone, his mind had other things ready. It was a few hours later that the sun tried to show its face again, announcing that another day would soon start. And it was then that the sound of birdwings could be heard. A few moments later and a crow had landed on the windowsill. It held his head a little tilted, as if it was not quite sure what exactly was going on here. Carefully, it hopped inside, only seeming to have eyes for one person. Kaz.

In the meantime, Kaz kept himself in the dark, still lost on that dark, open sea. It seemed endless, just like his suffering did. This endless sea was only a reminder of what he deserved, which was absolutely nothing. Even here he realised that no one was going to rescue him, that no one was even thinking of him. He was all on his own. Another wave crashed over him, pulling him under. Kaz didn't mind. The muffled silence was a welcome sound. The vampire looked up, seeing the ocean above him, seeing how the waves followed each other without even questioning. While he was surrounded by darkness here, the ocean above him showed light. Perhaps things were better. Light meant good right? He could give it another try.

It was around the time that the sun had passed it's highest point that Kaz showed signs of waking up again. Making a certain crow, who was seated on the edge of the bed, a very happy crow.

The books arrived with a soft knock on the door and almost immediately, Allison put down her journal and made her way to the door as quietly as possible. As she opened the door, she locked gazes with Gareth. An unamused face, a few books and… a bottle of wine. She couldn’t help but laugh as she closed the door behind her, placing her back against it as she took the stack of books from him, the bottle of wine balancing on top of it. “Thanks, Gareth,” she told him, a faint smile on her face. The guard had started off on a bad foot, but was starting to grow on her the longer they worked together. ‘You might need the wine,’ he told her with a smirk, causing the Duchess to roll her eyes, though the smile didn’t leave her face. “I might,” she agreed. She knew exactly why he did this. He was aware that there had been bottles of wine magically disappearing lately. And he was well aware who was to blame. Even in this dark moment, she couldn’t help but chuckle at the fact that he was merely trying to help, yet lecturing her silently. “Thanks,” she spoke, before she turned around and had him open the door for her. He offered his help, but she told him that Kaz was asleep. That was enough for the man to close the door behind her, so she could walk up to the bed, still balancing the wine on the stack of books.

Somehow, somewhere, she had dozed off. Sitting with her back against the headrest again, she had made a bit of a mess. There were about two books in the bed, a pencil, her own journal and a dozen of ripped notes. They were all scattered across her lap, covered in her own handwriting. Next to the bed were three more books, which probably had fallen off during the night, as they were lying open, pages slightly bent from the way they had landed. The bottle of wine was standing next to them, untouched. The candle on the nightstand had stopped burning long ago, leaving the room dark until the sun finally started to make its way back up again.

By the time the brunette opened her eyes, the sun was far up. An uncommon occurrence for her, but she had been reading until late in the night, early in the morning perhaps, so it was no surprise. Her head hurt and her face was quite possibly still a mess, but she didn’t really care. Instead, her eye fell upon a familiar creature, who was sitting on the edge of the bed. She couldn’t help but smile at the bird, who seemed to pay no attention to her, only wait for his master to wake up. She sighed deeply, pulling her hand through her hair, before she started organizing the notes, splitting those she didn’t need from those she did. The ones she didn’t need ended up on the floor, while the others were kept inside a book. She made sure the books were all neatly stacked next to the bed, except for the one she decided to open, carefully reading its content until Kaz would show any sign of awakening.

The pull on my flesh was just too strong

The sun didn't even reach the place where he was laying, but somehow all the light hurt his eyes. It was as if he still wasn't used to the fact that daylight still existed. Somewhere his mind was still stuck in that dark cellar where nothing but his own despair had shown him the way. Despair and pain. But this wasn't that cellar and he wasn't locked to a chair anymore. He was.. in bed. Somehow he only now seemed to realise.

Slowly, Kaz moved his head, groaning as he felt like everything in his body yelled at him to stop moving because everything hurt. Memories of what had happened yesterday slowly reached the surface. The woman had let him go free, she had pushed him up the hill towards the castle, she had given him back, or what was left of him, and had then disappeared. The rest was a blur. Except.. he could remember Mort. He could remember his brothers face. And he could remember all of this happened because of him. Anger boiled inside of him, but that soon faded away as he heard a soft crowing-sound.

Confused, Kaz dared to open his eyes, everything still blurred as he tried to get used to all of the light inside this room. It hadn't been a dream, he truly was back in the castle. He let his eyes glide over his body, seeing the blood on the covers and knowing that it was his. The pain in his leg only made it more clear that not everything had been a figment of his imagination. But.. was it truly? Kaz hadn't even realised that Allison was sitting next to him as he slowly worked hiself up, his body telling him this was a very bad idea. But there.. A crow. Not just any crow. Kruge. The goddamn demon showed its face again.

Without warning, his arms gave up on him and with a soft gasp he fell back into the bed again. He was weak. And above all, he was thirsty. Very thirsty.

Holy Basil. How could she have forgotten about the plant? It was one that definitely had not been acquirable in Falkreath and even in the rest of Fallen Skies, the plant was rare for as far as she was aware. But, it was a name she had seen in the garden. The plant was an interesting one. Without the help of an Alchemist’s magic, it was already a quite powerful plant, working against inflammations. But, there were reasons the plant was deemed holy by so many. And if mixed with the proper ingredients, it could be turned into something good. Chamomile was somewhat easier to acquire and she was quite sure that she could find most of the other things in the garden too. Perhaps she could get something working.

When Kaz woke up, she instantly put the pencil down, watching him as he groaned. A faint smile appeared on her face as he tried to push himself up, but he didn’t seem to pay attention to her yet, so she let him be until he dropped back on the bed. “Morning,” she greeted him eventually, still wearing that faint smile on her lips. Just happy to see him alive and all. “How are you feeling?” she asked carefully. What else could she ask, after all? She knew that he felt miserable, but… Maybe he at least felt the slightest bit better than yesterday. Or maybe he finally had something she could help him with.

The crow hopped on the bed, getting closer to his master as Kaz followed him with every move. What had been the point that Kruge had found his way back again? What had been the moment that somehow, his subconscious had called for the demon to accompany him? Why now, why not in that cellar when he so desperately needed a little bit of faith? What on earth had been the trigger?

The crow hopped on his leg, diggin one of its claws right into one of the wounds. Kaz grasped at his leg, letting out a gasp as Kruge immediately hopped off. Maybe he had done it on purpose, after all, Kruge was an image Kaz himself had created. It didn't have a will on its own. Allison's voice pulled him away from the pain as he shifted his gaze from the wound to her. How he was feeling? Why was she even asking him that? Moreover, he didn't even care for the question. Because next thing he knew, her heartbeat was suddenly the center of attention. The vampire stared at her, the monster within him stirred, resurfacing. Even after this rest, it had been two days since he had drank anything. He was empty and his will was weak. Hungry, he stared at her. He didn't need to answer the question, she could probably already tell by the look on his face.

Okay. This was bad. It hadn’t happened yet that he looked at her in the way that he did now. The predator inside him had made it to the surface and she seemed to be nothing more than a simple meal to him at this point. She grabbed the book and made her way off the bed, looking away from him as she did. Without a word, she made her way out the door, closing it behind her and pressing her back against it as soon as it closed. Tears found its way to her cheeks again as she took a deep breath in. This was exactly what she hadn’t been wanting to see. The monster inside of him, taking over. Because it was the one thing that could actually cause her to leave him someday.

When a maid kneeled down in front of her Duchess, who by now was sitting in front of the door, her face in her hands and the back of her head leaning against the door, she knew that she had to make a decision. ‘Is everything okay?’ the woman asked. Allison bit her lip, letting her hands fall on her lap. Softly, she shook her head. ‘Can I do anything to help?’ the woman then asked. The poor thing. Would she truly be…? Allison looked behind her for a second, before she had to fight back more tears. “It’s Kaz,” she answered, after which she got up and stepped aside, allowing the woman to open the door to their bedroom.

He wanted to crawl towards her, her heartbeat sounding like music to his ears, the rush of the hunt suddenly pumped through his veins and the monster, the true nature of the vampire, was reveiled. Who cared that he couldn't walk, he would crawl towards her and he would get what he wanted. But just like that, she got up and left. Leaving a very hungry vampire behind. And a very desperate one at that.

His eyes were locked on the door, fixated and hoping for a sign of someone entereing. After a while he could hear muffled footsteps. His energy was still too low for his senses to fully kick in, but there were two people talking. One of them was Allison. Meanwhile, Kaz had crawled to the edge of the bed, determined to get what he wanted. As soon as he wanted to get up, the door swung open. It didn't reveal Allison, but just a simple maid. A shocked one at that. It didn't matter, she was prey. By hearing her heartbeat he knew that she wasn't aware of the danger. ''My Duke! You shouldn't be up!'' The woman exclaimed as she rushed towards him to get him back in. But, as soon as she was in range, he basically flew at her.

They both ended up on the ground, the maid gasping, screaming when he bared her neck and bore his teeth inside it. It was as if every time he drank, the taste of it got better. The woman screamed for help, but upon releasing his venom, seemed to calm down a little more. She cried, just like the girl had cried in the basement. For a splitsecond, he was back there, in the dark, smelling her blood and eventually tasting it. By the time he snapped out of that memory, the maid in his arms was already gone. He let her body fall on the floor. A rush of euphoria took over as he himself fell down as well. Kaz closed his eyes for a moment. Blood stained his teeth as he tried to wipe his mouth clean. This.. this felt good. The vampire got up, leaning with his back at the side of the bed.

As soon as he saw her dead body, that euphoria was over. He had let the monster free. He hadn't contained his hunger and now someone had to pay. This woman had been innocent, just like the girl in the basement. Innocent lives lost because he couldn't even be strong enough to control his bloodthrist. His shoulders slumped again, Kaz reverted back into his shell. Defeated, as he looked at the maid in horror. A monster was what he was.

With slight hesitation, the brunette closed the door behind the maid. She could hear her ask something on the other side of the door, but soon after, the screaming started. Allison sat down again, her back leaning against the door. She wrapped her arms around the back of her head, covering her ears with her arms and hiding her face in her knees, which she had pulled up. Like that, she sat. Crying. The doubts clouded her mind as she finally allowed them to. For so long now, she had pushed them back. Telling herself that Kaz wasn’t the monster she had read about. That he and Mort were good. They were still the people they were before they were turned. Even when Mort had been burying the bodies. As she hadn’t seen them get killed, all was good. It had given her the chance to not create a visual of Kaz actually ending their lives.

Silence. It seemed to have taken an eternity before there was silence in the other room again. She didn’t stand up, however. Not for a while. She just sat there, tears streaming down her face, as she realized what had happened. As all her worries, all the negative thoughts, finally came in. Married to a monster. Even worse: loyal to one. Because even with this image in her head, a part of her wanted to rush in, ignore the body and the blood and ask him how he was. Still, with everything that had happened, she wanted to help him more than anything. Was she that hopeless?

It had been at least an hour, maybe even two, by the time she opened the door. She carefully closed it behind her and just stood there, her back against the door, looking at what had happened.

Minutes passed, maybe even half an hour, maybe an hour. Allison didn't come back, probably afraid of what she would see, to see the monster in his full glory. His eyes shifted back to the maid. He didn't want Allison to see her like this, to see him like this. Euphoria replaced itself with fear, the hate for himself only grew. He shifted his gaze from the maid to the window. He could make it.

The wound in her neck didn't leave any bloodmarks on the floor as he slowly but steadily tugged the body with him. He was crawling, it looked pathetic, the woman who had tortured him would probably laugh at him and tell him how sad it was that he somehow still tried to hide what he was. That he still tried to hide the evidence for the people who didn't even care for him. The window was open, now, he only had to get up. With help of the wall, he managed. The body of hte maid hung limp in his hands. For a moment he stared at her widened, open and dead eyes. The life sucked out of her. For what? For him to survive when he had nothing to survive for.

It wasn't easy, but eventually he pushed her body out of the window. He didn't want to look and he most defintely didn't want to hear her bones crack as they hit the rocks down at the cliff. The tide would sweep her body away eventually. Kaz let himself fall down on the ground again, still tired of it all. He let his eyes wander over his body, inspecting the wounds. Some seemed to close, but the process was slow. Carefully, he tugged at the edge of his pants, wondering how the wound on his leg looked like. And it was something that he didn't want to see.

It was closing. The last thing he wanted, was for it to close. The splinters were still there, he had to get it out or else he would suffer for it his whole life. Franctically, he tried to pry open the wound, his fingers digging into the skin as he desperately tried to stop the healing process. He looked like a madman right now. Blood started to seep from the wound, covering his hands. His fingers felt the sharp splinters digging deeper into his muscle. Trying to pull them out only dug them deeper. He didn't even hear the door. All his panic and concentration was focussed on the wound in his leg. And he was only making it worse.

Surprisingly, there was no body. And by the gods, she was taking that surprise over anything else. A relieved sigh left her mouth as she pulled her hand through her hair. Some things never changed, after all. She took a moment of relief, pushing back those negative thoughts again. It was as if the screams had never happened. After all: if she didn’t see it, she didn’t need to believe it. So, she looked away from the bed. There was blood everywhere in this damn room, but that was something that could be taken care of. At this point, she didn’t care. There were more important matters. Speaking of…

She had to keep herself from mentally puking when she saw what was happening. She gasped for air, raising her hand to where it covered her mouth. For a few seconds she froze, but soon enough she rushed up to the vampire. Without thinking it through, she took his hands and tried to stop him from what he was doing. “Stop it,” she told him, her voice stern, yet clearly panicking. Why the hell was he digging into his own flesh? Had he gone completely insane? She looked down into the wound and noticed what was going on, causing her to bite her lip and look away again. Oh boy.

It hurt horribly, he wanted to scream out, but instead he bit his lip. He had to ignore it for now, he had to save himself. Not weak. Not weak. Not weak. The wound only got worse, tearing open again, maybe even further than it had before. The muscle was visible and the blood kept on spilling, forming a small puddle on the ground which only expanded the more time passed.

He almost got it, he fould feel his fingers catching one of the splinters. And then she pulled him out. Kaz gasped, the pain coursing through his body, reminding him of what he had done. He tried to held back the tears, but they started flowing anyway, like they didn't care what he thought. In panic, Kaz shook his head, trying to get his hands loose from her. ''No. It shouldn't heal.'' Panic was clearly hearable in his voice, if not, it was the only emotion he was feeling right now. The stench of his own blood didn't even bother him anymore. ''It musn't!'' More panic as he tried to dig into his skin again.

It was healing. And if it healed, the splinters would be stuck inside. Allison nodded. She understood, but him trying to fix this with his bare hands was only going to make matters worse, so she grabbed his hands again when he pulled them loose. “Let me,” she told him. “Just don't touch it,” she demanded, before she let go of his hands and made her way to the side of the bed, where she opened the nightstand again. This was probably the only time where he could ever be glad about his wife being a living, breathing doll. Because it also meant that she always had a tweezer at hand. Just in case. And that was going to be a lot better to pull out the splinters with.

She grabbed his hands as he seemed to be about to dig into the flesh again, looking the vampire into his eyes. “Let me do this,” she told him, placing his hands on his lap, before carefully letting go of them and looking at the wound, which seemed to want to heal. Badly. With the splinters inside. She took a deep breath in, cursing her karma, before she used the tweezers to pull out the first splinter. This was going to be a hell of a ride.

The pull on my flesh was just too strong
Stifled the choice and the air in my lungs
Better not to breathe than to breathe a lie

The blood on his hands made everything slippery. It was a hell. Not only were his hands covered, his leg, the floor and probably the rest of his body were painted red. All because the feeling of his wound healing was wrong. And the fact that the wound would ever heal properly. He had to stop this, he had to make sure he was fine. He had.. Allison caught his hands again, telling him to stop, that she would take care of things. With a shocked expression he looked at her, unable to process what was going on.

She left him alone, but not entirely. For a moment, Kaz stared at the place she had just been. His mind seemed to realize what he was doing, only to send another message. Keep going. But by the time he wanted to dig in again, Allison was back, grabbing his hands. The vampire flinched, automatically pulling them back. Sweat started to break out as he saw what she was holding. But the blood he had drank was already doing its worse and the wound tried to close again. He expressed the pain he felt by a loud scream, as he hit his head hard against the wall. More out of shock than out of madness, but the line between those two emotions was wearing very thin.
